Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 made $1 billion a day quicker than Modern Warfare 3, Activision has
announced.
That's $1 billion in worldwide retail sales in 15 days since launch, based on Chart-Track and internal
figures. Modern Warfare 3 took 16 days to cross the $1 billion mark.
For comparison, James Cameron's Avatar made $1 billion in 17 days.
Since Call of Duty was launched, cumulative franchise revenues from players around the world are
greater than current worldwide box office receipts to date for the top ten grossing films of 2012
combined, Activision boss Bobby Kotick said.
Since launch, more than 150 million hours have been logged online playing the game on Xbox Live
and PlayStation Network.
Activision Publishing chief Eric Hirshberg added: "In order for Call of Duty to remain the
entertainment juggernaut that it is, and keep our fans coming back for more, we need to continue
to bring fresh ideas and new innovations to the table every time, while always staying true to what
people fell in love with in the first place. That's what we did with Call of Duty: Black Ops II, and
that's what we intend to keep on doing.
“This is an incredible milestone for an incredible franchise, and I want to thank every passionate,
talented, committed person on our team who made it happen."
While Black Ops 2 seems to be doing the business globally, in the UK it hasn't managed to match the
sales of previous games in the gargantuan first-person shooter series.
On these shores, Black Ops 2 is the fourth biggest UK game launch ever, behind Black Ops, Modern
Warfare 3 and Modern Warfare 2. We know it sold fewer than 1.7 million in launch week because
Modern Warfare 2, released in 2009, sold 1.7 million copies in the UK during launch week.
Black Ops, which released in 2010, sold an incredible two million copies in the UK week one.

Well if it counts, I got bored of Blops 2 a day quicker than MW3...
Seriously though, at least they had the balls to change things up a little. Just wasn't enough of
a change for me. Reply +12 - + Edit Delete

I'd be interested to know how the advertising budgets compare. Do they have to spend more
and more each year to break records? Or is the brand so big now that advertising spend can
decrease and sales still rise?
There's a lot of talk about how much money it brought in, but not much talk about how much

I first read that as $1bn a day and nearly got a heart attack.
It's funny though how this seems to be a record hunt for the fastest possible cash collection for
an ever more impatient publisher, before being more or less thrown away. Like Call of Duty
seems to be a record hunt to give the ever more short-attention-span players the fastest roller
coaster ride possible, before being more or less thrown away. Reply +4 - + Edit Delete

...we need to continue to bring fresh ideas and new innovations to the table every
time
Yeaahhhh...you've been failing that since Modern Warfare.
Kill confirmed was a "fresh idea" then was it? Hmm, yeah. Seem to remember that being done
in Crysis 2 before.
Any more "fresh ideas" you're adding in the net CoD that hasn't already been done.

i hear countless ps3 players are having issues connecting, and many many pc players have
atrocious lag. why do people buy this games then?? id much rather prefer games went back to
platforming adventure like jak and daxter, legacy of cain, medievil. will that ever happen?
with the power of new tech game worlds would look amazing and magical, effects would be
jaw dropping. Reply +3 - + Edit Delete

i have been constantly checking steam community activity every day. never has it hit top spot
and is usually at 5th or 6th place behind dota2, tf2, cs, fm2012 etc. wonder if so many are
buying, but why its not going to top? are people just sitting on their copies? Reply 0 - + Edit

News like that really make you lose faith in gaming. I mean, we always had blockbuster
games, but it was kinda different when games like Final Fantasy, Tekken, Resident Evil (the
PROPER Resident Evil), Zelda, Fallout, Half Life, Tomb Raider and Baldur's Gate made the
charts. Those were unique and great games and they deserved to earn money. Reply +6 - +

If you bought I'd doubt you be moaning about it reaching 1b faster than MW3.
I'm actually glad I bought it and personally I think it's the 2nd best CoD since 4, followed
closely by WaW. Reply 0 - + Edit Delete

The multiplayer is skewed way way over in to Quake 3 territory. Doesn't feel like you're having
a team firefight in the street. Feels like a free for all that keeps count. The lack of sound
anyone makes by moving is crazy. And if anyone wonders if the awareness perk reinstates the
original soundfield it doesn't. Levels are small and twisty. Plays more like machinegun
jousting. Disappointing Reply +1 - + Edit Delete

Thanks for those fresh ideas and new innovations you stuck in a 6 year old game. Just a pity
the shit from previous versions still floats to the top.
I'll just stick to Killzone and Halo for my FPS fix. Infinitely better games. Reply +4 - + Edit

@vaibhavp While I would imagine it's the same game, It's not really aimed at PC users, the
price point is slightly too high compared to the average cost of a PC game, Doesn't have mod's
or fan made maps and is more focused towards the console distribution method and users. The
games you listed for PC wouldn't do so well on Console.
It's still a mammoth achievement though. Congratulations Treyarch and Activision. (I hated
writing that.) Reply +1 - + Edit Delete

those know it all’s who are now routinely predicting the death of console gaming. Reply -2 - +
