GOLDEN AGE CLUB
Welcome back. Hope you all had a great summer!
We would like to hear from you regarding what kind of entertainment you wish.
Some ideas mentioned at our last luncheon included having someone come in
to evaluate antiques we bring in.
Another idea was for members to bring in their hobby items and talk about
them.
Looking forward to seeing you at the luncheons - and bring a friend if you wish.
All are welcome.
Please see the Almanac for the Golden Age Club meeting dates!
The Board
FROM THE FOLK DANCERS:
“Come dance with us!”
Summer is turning to Fall, and the Folkdancers are back in action.
Come and join us in some fun-filled exercise
and learn new steps for our traditional
couples-dances.
Meet new friends and participate in lots of old
and new "kvadriller" and other set dances.
Rumor has it we will practice the “Lanciers”
again this Fall. Wouldn’t it be fun to know this popular Danish party dance for
your next get together or function? Or maybe just for fun.
We meet 3 Fridays of the month from September to early December, and from
January through May, from 7:30pm to 10pm (with a coffee break).
Look for the dates in the Almanac on page 3. Beginners are always welcome; all
you have to do is show up.
See you downstairs, in the Royal Hall at The Danish Lutheran Church, 72 Finch
Ave. W, Toronto
For more information, email us: [email protected]
or see www.danishfolkdancers.ca
THE CHOIR
The choir is back to regular rehearsals on Tuesdays at 7pm, and
having a great time already. We have a few treats in store for the
coming months, including special music for Thanksgiving and
All-Saints services, plus some exciting collaborations in the
works. We're looking forward to welcoming Fall through song!
If you would like to drop in on a choir rehearsal, or even come
up to join us in the organ loft some Sunday, you are most
welcome - we'd love to have some fresh voices!

FALL / CHRISTMAS BAZAAR
SATURDAY NOVEMBER 16th
11am - 2:30pm
Another unique Danish bazaar is coming to Toronto!
We are gathering needlework, jewelry and quality Tombola gifts. If you have a
special item the Silent Auction will be very happy to receive it. And we do hope
some of our good cooks will bake cakes and cookies and make leverpostej for
the Bake Booth!
Your favourite licorice, marzipan and food products have been ordered from
Denmark. Danish nisser are being created in homes around Toronto, so they
can make their debut on November 16th. Our White Elephant just needs quality articles please. Due to special donations, you will be able to bid on Danish
figurines, a B&G dinner set (“Blå Blomst”) as well as numerous gift baskets at
the Silent Auction.
IF YOU HAVEN’T ATTENDED FOR MANY YEARS,
DO TRY TO VISIT!
Bring a friend for an outstanding lunch and the best bazaar there is. Put Saturday
November 16th on your calendar.

GREETINGS FROM GRIMSBY
After a lovely summer the work has started again in the Congregation here in
Grimsby. First we had a party on August 17th at 1pm. Summer Party-Patio Party
-Welcome Back Party-Birthday Party and Fundraising!
Lis and I had decided to throw this party. There were 53 people there, all members of the Congregation, except for Pastor Kenneth and Mette, who arrived a
bit later as they’d had a service at Sunset Mindepark.
I handed out donation envelopes and picked them up again later. We collected
more than $2,200 for the church!
It was a great party. We had good food, the spirits were high – and the patio
really can hold 50 people – and it did not collapse, even though it is a bit wobbly!
And now the Fall Programme is in full swing. According to the Church Almanac
in our new Kirkehilsen, the Friendship Club is happening every Tuesday at
10:00am, and Thanksgiving Anniversary Dinner
is on October 26th at 5:30pm.
The annual Danish Christmas Bazaar is on Saturday November 2nd from 11:00am to 2:00pm.
Come and see what we have to offer here in
Grimsby – everybody is welcome.
I wish you all a nice Autumn!

On Saturday October 26th at 2:00pm the Grimsby congregation will be hosting
this year’s Fall Meeting of the Ontario Region of Danish Associations in
Canada. Everyone involved with any membership group is very welcome to
attend and hear the reports. Rolf Buschardt Christensen, the president of the
Federation of Danish Associations in Canada will inform
us about the plans for the upcoming conference in May
2014 in Ottawa.
Following the meeting the Grimsby ladies have prepared a
Danish dinner of Flæskesteg and Æblekage for $25 per
person. Please register for dinner by October 20th by
emailing Eva Terp at [email protected] or letting Liselotte
know ([email protected] / 905-898-3779).

The Ontario Region invites all young Danish Canadians in
Ontario between the ages of 12 and 22 to submit an essay
entitled ”My Danish Roots” by January 11th, 2014.
Don’t miss out on having your submission published in our
Heritage Book, or possibly winning $50 or $100 !

DANSKSKOLEN
The Danish school has begun its 2013/2014 year!
The first class and registration was September 28th, but you can register anytime.
This year we welcome our new Danish teacher, Karin Graulund Attermann.
Karin arrived in Canada last November, and with her teaching background we
are happy to have her join the Danish School.
Classes run eleven Saturdays through the school year, from 10:00am to
12:30pm.
New students are always welcome.
The next classes are November 9th, November 30th and December 7th.
Keep up to date on our website at: www.simplesite.com/dkskolen
Looking forward to another great year!
Deborah

CHILDREN’S HOUR
Once again Children’s Hour is meeting a few times per month. Please check
page 2 for the dates.
We were off to a good start September 8th, where Dana came to help, and Erin,
Leah and Severus contributed ideas for our stage presentation. We sang the
hymn Joyful, Joyful just as the congregation did that Sunday. We will continue to
learn about the Bible and hear stories about Jesus. Whether the children come a
few Sundays or attend regularly, they are most welcome. Please send a loonie
with your child to help cover expenses.
See you at church this Fall.
Liselotte
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee,
All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
God of glory, Lord of love;
Earth and heav’n reflect Thy rays,
Hearts unfold like flow’rs before Thee,
Stars and angels sing around Thee,
Op’ning to the sun above.
Center of unbroken praise.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Flow’ry meadow, flashing sea,
Giver of immortal gladness,
Singing bird and flowing fountain
Fill us with the light of day!
Call us to rejoice in Thee.

LUCIA PAGEANT 2013
It is hard to believe it is already time to make plans for our Lucia presentation.
As usual I am really looking forward to seeing your children, grandchildren and
even great grandchildren take part in this festive tradition.
I hope to spend time with the children during Children’s Hour on November
17th, 24th and December 1st. We will have a light snack after the service and
then sing our English and Danish Christmas carols. Everyone (all 30 of them, I
hope!) should be ready to go home by 12:30pm. The Lucia Pageant is a perfect
start to our Christmas season. Encourage your young
people to attend so we can keep our church tradition
alive.
The festive Lucia Pageant , enjoyed by so many, will
be part of the church service on the second Sunday
of Advent, Sunday December 8th at 4:30pm. You
can participate in the meal afterwards by signing up at
church to bring frikadeller, dessert or other goodies.

PASTOR’S CORNER
I overheard a conversation the other
day in church. Summer is over!
someone said. No, it’s not, not until
the equinox, someone else replied.
In Denmark, autumn begins September 1st. Over here I think it’s fair to
count September as a summer
month. Anyway, we’re heading into
October and it’s definitely getting
colder. “The leaves are fading everywhere”, both here and in Denmark.
And the changing of the seasons is
mirrored by the changing holidays of
the church year. In autumn we have
two holidays where we think back
and remember what was given.
Those are Thanksgiving Sunday and
All Saints’ Day. Both manifestly belong to the last season of the year.
The first is more festive and the second is more solemn but neither
should be missed.
There are a two other Sundays as
well that I would like to call attention
to. On Sunday October 20th, the day
after Thanksgiving dinner, Bishop
Steen Skovsgaard will still be here.
Please come and join us. The following Sunday, October 27th, is Reformation Sunday. This day marks the
posting of Luther’s 95 theses on the
church doors at Wittenberg castle in
1517.
This year we will celebrate Reformation Sunday with the other Lutheran churches in Toronto at a service in the Finnish church at 3:00pm.
Please note that there will not be any
service at the DLC that Sunday. We
have been invited by the Swedish
congregation, and we think this might
be an excellent opportunity to get
together with our Scandinavian
siblings. Please join us for a festive
service!
And then a note of a slightly different
character: I recently received my G
license. It was a little nerve-wracking
to take the test but I did it. The quiet
setting of Orangeville most certainly
helped me. What has this to do with
you? Well, it means that you don’t
have to live on the subway line in
order for me to go and see you.
Please let me know if you would like
me to drop by for a chat. It may also
be that you know someone who has
not been able to come to church for
a while but who might like to see me.
Feel free to give me a nudge when
you see me, or call me. If I’m not at
the phone and you leave a message,
I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.
By the way, I misquoted the title of
Grundtvig’s Autumn hymn just before. In the English translation, it says
that “the leaves are falling everywhere”. And that the “feathered legions […] have left for milder regions”. In the original Danish, we are
not quite there yet: The leaves are
not falling, not even colouring, but
actually just fading. And only the
stork has gone south.
10
Well, that was just a
small remark. I still find
it interesting to discover
how the same text, even
from the Bible, may
convey a slightly different meaning when read
in English instead of in
Danish.
Anyway, I hope and think we’ll get a
chance to sing all the Danish autumn
hymns these coming months, be it in
this or that language.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all
during the Fall!

2014 MEMBERSHIP REGISTRATION
It is time for our 2014 membership drive. Enclosed with this Kirkehilsen should
be the annual membership registration form. Take this opportunity to update
any needed address changes or corrections, or to sign up as a voting member by
paying the $15.00 levy.
This is also an opportunity to make a donation to the church, as we are basically
self-funded and rely fully on our gracious donors.
Please remember that the $15.00 levy per voting member has to be paid by December 1st to ensure voting rights at the next AGM in March 2014. Feel free to
speak to any Board member if further information is required.
EFTERÅRS - DIGT
Mørk er november og løvfaldet slut,
vandet begynder at fryse,
Thorkild Bjoernvig (1959)

FROM THE PRESIDENT
It seems our hot and humid summer
has now been replaced with a cooler
fall. Soon Mother Nature will provide brilliant fall colours for us to
enjoy.
Changes are also happening at the
church - but more on that later. Most
of you are aware that our various
activity groups are back in full service
mode. All are welcome to try them
out in case you are not a regular participant. And that also includes our
Sunday services. We are grateful that
we have so many different activities
available during the week, but keep
in mind that Sundays are our specialty.
Pastor Kenneth is fitting in nicely as
our new minister. Both he and his
wife Mette have embraced our
church (complete with rolled up
sleeves - which is nice to see!) and are
anxious to meet you. Come and try it
out one Sunday. We'll even throw in
a coffee and sandwich for you to
enjoy afterwards. Hope to see you
there.
Weather has had a way of forcing us
to be adaptable this past summer.
Our Summer BBQ was held inside
because of the heat (but still successful with good food, fun, and fellowship), and it tried to rain on our
parade at the Potluck Lunch - so we
took it indoors, where we also got a
kitchen project update.
Weather also chased the Concert in
the Park indoors. It is not often you
can enjoy a 12 piece swing band orchestra (courtesy of our neighbour
CHIRS) in our Royal Hall, complete
with aebleskiver and a rain storm but we did, and we have photos to
prove it!
The Welcome Back Fest went well we enjoyed European sausages,
salads, and ice cream, and even some
songs to help settle the meal.
And a special thank you to the Fall
Clean-Up crew. Once again rain
encouraged only indoor activities but this was a blessing in disguise, as
we needed to make preparations for
the pending kitchen renovation.
There was more moving done than
cleaning, but a busy and good time
was had, none the less.
October is for Thanksgiving - and we
do have a lot to be thankful for.
There will be a GAC service on
Thursday afternoon (October 10th)
as well as our usual Thanksgiving
Sunday service (October 13th). This
year we hope to have a very special
Thanksgiving Dinner (October 19th).
Our best efforts will be focused on
having the kitchen renovation finished so that we can cook a lovely
pork roast in our BRAND NEW
KITCHEN!
12
In addition we will have Bishop
Steen Skovsgaard as our special
guest, as well as enjoy a unique and
different program put on by the
amazing Folk Dancers. This is always
an event to look forward to, but even
more so this year. Please make sure
you join us for this celebration and
sign up early.
In November we have All Saints’ Day
(and the church’s birthday), another
Kitchen Fundraiser Lunch, Remembrance Day, and of course our
annual Fall/Christmas Bazaar and
Lottery - a must for all of us!
We will also have a "Julehygge" afternoon with gløgg and other Christmas
goodies. This is the start of our "busy"
season, so please look elsewhere in
this newsletter for more details on
these events, or make sure you check
out the calendar or website for a list
of all the activities and dates.
These events are for your enjoyment
as well as for the church’s benefit, so
please make an effort to support
them.
Many of you "regulars" will notice a
recent change in the church. We are
now in process with the kitchen renovation. The kitchen and Grundtvig
Salen will be undergoing significant
changes in the next three weeks. We
ask that you be patient with the confusion (and occasional mess) that
often accompanies such events. We
are very grateful for all the support
we have had so far - almost $20,000
raised by the end of August.
But we don't want to stop there. The
full cost can be as high as $90,000 so
we will still be asking for your support even after the construction is
complete. We have received several
large independent donations so far
(and with our most humble and
grateful thanks to those donors), and
look forward to continued support
from all of you. This new kitchen will
benefit all of us - whether week day
or week end users - so feel free to
participate in its success.
Most of you should have received the
2014 membership registration with
this newsletter. We hope you will
take the time to sign up with us. It is
important that we have your correct
mailing information on file, as well as
your written notice to be registered as
a voting member if that is your preference. It is also an opportunity for
you to make a donation to the
church, especially if you are not able
to visit us on a regular basis. Please
remember that we are a fully selffunding church with basically no financial support from Denmark, so
every little bit always helps.
We are back in full swing once again.
In addition to our various weekly
activity groups, we are also here each
and every Sunday and would be happy to see you. You and your family
and friends are always welcome in
our church. Have a wonderful Fall
season.
Sune Overgaard
A big THANK YOU to the
volunteers who prepared the lunch
after the Summer services.
Their efforts were very much
appreciated!!

KITCHEN PROJECT UPDATE
As most of you know, we are moving forward with our
kitchen renovation. The next three weeks will involve
major changes to the kitchen and Grundtvig Salen.
We hope to have everything done in time for the Thanksgiving Dinner. In the meantime we ask for your patience
during the construction. We have had great support for
this project. As of mid-September we crossed the $20,000
barrier ($20,092 to be exact!!). Several members have
given large individual donations which we gratefully appreciate.
We will continue to fundraise with various special lunches, concerts, and other events and hope to get your continued support.
A special thank you to all who participate and contribute
to this special project!

FEST
AUTUMN POEM
A haze on the far horizon,
The infinite, tender sky,
The ripe, rich tint of the cornfields,
And the wild geese sailing high;
And all over the upland and the lowland
The charm of the golden rod,
Some of us call it Autumn,
And others call it God.

FALL LOTTERY 2013
The draw for the 2013 Fall Lottery will take place at the conclusion of our Fall/
Christmas Bazaar on Saturday November 16th, 2013 at approximately 2:30 pm.
We have some very nice prizes, courtesy of several generous donors. They include a travel voucher from Valhalla Travel, Keswick; a gold pendant and chain
from Malmholt Fine Jewellers, Toronto; Georg Jensen giftware from Torp Inc,
Toronto; as well as other exciting prizes.
Please keep in mind that conditions apply for some of these prizes, however the
true benefit is in the gift itself - which is to help fundraise for our wonderful
church.
Tickets are $4.50 each, or a book of 6
for $25.00, and will be mailed out shortly with a stamped self-addressed envelope. The ticket stubs with payment
must be received at the church prior to
the draw. They can also be purchased at
the bazaar right up until draw time.
Try your luck at being a winner, and help support the church at the same time
by purchasing these lottery tickets. Please join us for the draw and participate in
the Bazaar as well.

FROM SUNSET VILLA
Hi there! Just a little note from Sunset Villa.
Have you been there lately?? The park is at its prime, just beautiful a few
“minutes” before winter. Is it not always the case? The gardens are all in their
full glory just before they are going to go to sleep for the winter. You should take
a ride up there to see it all before it gets covered with snow. We have had several
delightful events at Sunset Villa; you can read all about them in the Bulletin.
There is one thing I would like to talk to you about. Our treasurer of 7 years Kaj
Kristensen has resigned, and we are in dire need of a proper treasurer. I am
covering for the time being, but even though I know how to add 2+2 I will never
be a bookkeeper, accountant or treasurer. If there is a person out there who
would like to come join us we would be very happy. It should ideally be somebody with a bit of knowledge of accounting and our Tax laws, somebody who
has a few hours a week to donate to us, somebody who can do a better job than
I. Just contact one of the board members please.
Hoping to see you all very, very soon at Sunset Villa.
Karin Thorlund Larsen
A BIG THANK YOU
TO THE FALL CLEAN-UP TEAM !!
What do you do when you wake up on a Saturday morning in late September, it
is chilly and raining outside and you are still sleepy? You get up, go to the
church, have a nice warm bagel with a cup of coffee, a chat and a laugh with
friends, and then you roll back your sleeves and start working!
That’s what 19 energetic people did on September 21st - and what a difference it
makes when a team like that shows up!
It was a blessing in disguise that it was raining, so everybody had to stay indoors,
because it turned out that we had received the permit to start the renovation of
the kitchen, and the contractors were ready to start on the Monday. In other
words, we had to empty Grundtvigsalen so they could get started, and we needed
all hands on deck!
It is incredible what we can achieve when we work together – and we even manage to have a lot of fun in the process (and lunch when we are done!). And the
good news is that there is work suitable for absolutely everybody - whether you
want to sit down and polish silverware, or lug around heavy boxes, we need you!
See you at the Spring clean-up!
ARE YOU ON OUR E-MAIL BLAST LIST?
