In September the first month of spring we have the WRC in Coffs Harbour from Thursday 11th to

Numbers are limited to 8 cars and at this stage it is full up. To finish off the month the AGM is on
Monday 22nd, a sausage sizzle will start things off from 6.30pm.
Coming up in October we have the long weekend trip to Inskip Point from Saturday 4th to
Monday 6th. Then later in the month on the 19th we have a Sunday social trip to Eat Street
Markets at Hamilton and then on to a round of Mini Golf at the DFO.
So there is no reason to stay home, get out and about meet new friends and enjoy our great
outdoors.
Also always remember to be well prepared for trips, put your name down in the trip book, phone

GENERAL INFO
After some encouraging feedback from the last edition of the newsletter regarding the changes
to the road rules, this edition includes some information about – Speeding.
Below is an extract from The Department of Transport and Main Roads website
www.tmr.qld.gov.au.
Speeding fines and demerit points
When a vehicle is detected speeding by either a fixed or mobile speed camera (
http://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/fines/speed/index.html ), an infringement notice is
mailed to the registered operator of the vehicle (this also applies to a joint operator whose name
is listed first on the record). This notice provides details of the alleged offence and includes a
photograph.
The notice provides the registered operator with 28 days to pay the fine, elect to go to court, or
nominate the driver of the vehicle. If you are the registered operator and you pay the fine,
demerit points will also be accrued against your driver licence.
Fines and demerit points for speed camera detected speeding offences are the same as for other
speeding tickets.
Current penalties for speeding
Less than 13 kilometres per hour (km/h) over the speed limit: $151 + 1 demerit point.
At least 13km/h but not more than 20km/h over the speed limit: $227 + 3 demerit points.
More than 20km/h but not more than 30km/h over the speed limit: $379 + 4 demerit points.
More than 30km/h but not more than 40km/h over the speed limit: $531 + 6 demerit points.
More than 40km/h over the speed limit: $1062 + 8 demerit points and 6 month suspension.

Double demerit points
Double demerit points apply in Queensland to drivers and motorcycle riders who commit more
than 1 of the following speeding offences within a 12 month period:
Penalty set
(km/h
over speed
limit)
First offence
Demerit
Point
Penalty
Second offence (within a
year)

and

and 6

16 points
and 6
months

For example, if you commit a speeding offence of 25km/h over the speed limit, you will be
allocated 4 demerit points for that offence. If you commit a second speeding offence of 32km/h
over the speed limit within 1 year after the first offence, you will be allocated 6 demerit points
for the second offence, plus an additional 6 demerit points for it being within 1 year after the
first offence. You will have 16 demerit points allocated to your traffic history, which will result in
a driver licence sanction.
Double demerit points also apply if more than one seatbelt offence occurs within a 12-month
period. The additional demerit point penalty will apply to driver-related offences for seatbelts.
For example, if you commit a driver seatbelt offence where you failed to wear a seatbelt, you will
be allocated 3 demerit points for that offence. If you commit a second offence where you drive a
vehicle while a passenger is not restrained, within 1 year after the first offence, you will be
allocated 3 demerit points for the second offence. You will also receive an additional 3 demerit
points for it being within 1 year after the first offence. This means you will have 9 demerit points
allocated to your traffic history, which may result in a driver licence sanction .

EDITOR’S BLOG
G’day Fellow Club Members,
It is interesting how life lets you think you’re in control and everything is balanced and as it should
be. Then you receive a curve ball from left field. I have just received my curve ball in the shape of a
new job offer which I have accepted. The new job will involve regular interstate travel with my
eventual permanent relocation in the New Year.
Moving the whole family just for my employment is a big ask. One for which I am grateful for my
family’s support and the offer itself.
What this does mean, is I will not be nominating for Editor or Co-Webmaster positions. So if you see
yourself adding your stamp to these or any other committee positions, then please complete the
enclosed nomination form and submit it prior to the Annual General Meeting on the 22 September
2014.
Until next time, enjoy life, your family and friends and we wish health and happiness to you all.
Cheers,
Diane and Phillip White (SC644)

Bartons Subaru Night / July General Meeting – 28th July 2014
We held our July general meeting at the Bartons Subaru Capalaba Showroom. It was all made
possible after the Bartons local business specialist Fiona Johnson contacted the Club and
suggested it. Well it did not take long to say yes. The date was soon set down for the July
meeting. The night would include a look through the showroom as well as the workshop with
question and answers and a sausage sizzle.
For the night the whole Barton's team were on hand from the General Manager Paul Piert to
Lachlan Hall Sales Manager, Anthony Nicholson Workshop Foreman, Michael Watson Parts and
Brandon Whitman the Detailer who cooked the sausages. Richard Wells from Subaru Australia
also attended; he is the regional fleet and corporate sales manager.
Everyone who was present received a handy Barton's goodies bag. All latest models were on
display including the new VX Black and the BRZ which is now available at Dealerships. Up until
recently because of early supply problems the BRZ was only available online.
In the workshop on the hoists were a Forester XT with the X Mode CVT auto and a XV auto. It
was great being able to have a good close up look under the cars.
To all the Club members who registered on the night, (we have a supply of extra forms), Bartons
have kindly set up a special VIP pricing deal on sales, servicing and parts. So if you are thinking
about buying a new or used Subaru or getting a service done or chasing parts. Bartons are the
people to see. Subaru Australia has also chipped with some money clips that will be available at
future meetings.
On behalf of all the Club members who attended it was a great night, thank you to Fiona Johnson
and the whole Barton's team and Subaru Australia for organising it all.

Training Presentation at July’s General Meeting
Basic recovery gear consists of:
D & BOW SHACKLES
D shackles are designed for chains and rope with hard eyelets.
Bow shackles are designed for use with straps and flat wire slings.
RATINGS OF RECOVERY EQUIPMENT
People often ask, what is the shackle, snatch strap etc. rated at?
Rated recovery equipment will be marked with either of the following:WLL:- working load limit
Or the old SWL:- safe working load which was replaced with Working Load Limit some years
back.
MBS:- minimum breaking strength
A shackle is rated at 1/6th of its minimum breaking strength.
A chain is rated at 4/6ths of its minimum breaking strength.
A snatch strap is rated at its minimum breaking strength.
A snatch block is rated at 1/2 of its minimum breaking strength.
A recovery hook is rated at ??????
So now I know the answer to an earlier question. Why a 4700kg shackle can be used with a
9000kg snatch strap? The answer is that a 3700kg shackle has a 22,000kg MBS, while the snatch
strap only has a 9000kg MBS. So the strap should fail before the shackle.
But what about the recovery point? What are its WLL and MBS? Hope it’s stronger than the
9000kg snatch strap, which should be the weakest point in the recovery chain.

Border Ranges Rally and Day Trip – 2nd and 3rd August 2014
On a cool early August morning we met in Beaudesert. The crew were Rob Moulton and Deb
Anderson in the little red wagon; she was running a lot smoother, after Rob recently replaced a
front wheel bearing. Paul Ashton in his Forester; it was also running well after having an auto
service and some oil cooler hoses replaced. Morgan Oxenford - Hart in his trusty Brumby, Big
John McKenna D Max with his Tray-on Camper. It was its first trip with new raised heavy duty
suspension. Now the D Max sits a lot more level than his old Rodeo and me in my Brumby
rounded out the crew.
After good run down the Mt Lindsey Highway we arrived at the Woodenbong Showgrounds.
After signing on, having a debrief and collecting our stage gear, we then set off to our nearby
stage. It was called Boomi - a shire road that links up Woodenbong to Urbenville. It also used
part of an aptly named road called Brumby Plains. Also on a farm not far the start, a pretty
straight Brumby (the tail gate was missing) sat in a line-up of old farm cars including a Valiant and
a Series 2 Land Rover.
Rob and Deb manned the stop at the Urbenville end, Rob was Deputy Stage Commander and
Deb was the Stop Post Chief. The Flying Finish was a supplied crew. At the Woodenbong end
start, Big John and I did the Time Control, Paul and Morgan did the Start Control. We were the
first stage of the rally and the first car was delayed for about half an hour. All the main farm
gates along 17km stage had to be manned and pad locked up. It took the set up crew a long time
to do this job.
This year being both a round of the QLD Rally Championship and NSW Rally Championship, there
were quite a few different cars than we normally see. There were about 45 entries. The first
morning run of the stage, there were no major problems. In the afternoon run we only started 8
cars when the stage had to be stopped a VW Polo engine had caught fire. The Firies were called
in to the stage to help put the fire out. The Polo was saved without any major damage. With the
time delay the stage had to be cancelled. So we then packed up and headed back to the
Showgrounds.
The plan for the evening was we would be manning the Flying Finish and Stop controls on the
short super special Woodenbong stage. It was about a 3km stage that started in town on
bitumen and finished up the road on dirt. This time Paul and Morgan did the Flying Finish and
again Rob and Deb did the Stop with back up from Big John and me. The cars did 2 runs of this
night time stage. As a result and plus the speed of the cars, Paul and Morgan had trouble seeing
the car numbers. At the Stop the car numbers were able to be recorded. An old Celica arrived
at the stop without head lights, the only light they had was the navigator's smart phone torch out
the window. They were happy just to finish.
After the finish of this stage we packed up and set off back to the showgrounds for a snack and a
warm up around the fire drums. For us it was another successful rally completed, a big thank
you to all involved. Rob and Deb soon set off for home, it was going to be a cold trip as little red
wagon's heater was not working. By the time the rest of us went to bed around 10.30 -- 11 there
was already a thin layer of ice on the cars. The temp gauge said 3.5 degrees. By morning there
was thick cloud cover, and the temp had crept up to around 6 degrees.

Sunday
After we had brekky and packed up our day trippers of, Dave Gibbo in his Forester and Bob
Beatty in his blue Pajero soon arrived. The drive for the day was to head south east through the
forest's towards Kyogle and then turn north for home. We travelled on Brumby Plains Road for a
while and once in the forest we had to make a stop to clear some small fallen trees. Our next
stop was for morning tea at the Yabbra Fire Tower. It has a good steeper climb to the top. With
the overcast weather, we were surprised to see the fire tower was manned. We could see only
clouds.
After a bit of a bitumen run down through Bonalbo, we were back on the dirt. Not long before
our lunch stop at Peacock Creek we spotted an abandoned L Series wagon in a paddock. Oh well
they are getting to that age now. From Peacock Creek we continued on down the mountain
stopping at Toonumbar Dam. From the Dam we wanted to cut through on back tracks to around
near the Lions Rd turn off, but the rally was still running on the road we wanted to use.
The Border Ranges Rally is now a 2 day event and uses roads in the Kyogle area. So we had to
continue on to Kyogle where we had a quick stop for ice creams. Up the road at Wiangaree, Bob
lead the way onto a back-track he knew, that linked up with the Lions Rd. By this time it had
finally started to rain, it was very light and misty. Once on the Lions Rd we took the lower creek
track, the crossings were the lowest we had seen them. On cue, as we crossed the border back
into Queensland, the rain stopped and the sun was shining.
Our final stop was in Beaudesert where we stopped for another quick snack. From here we said
our goodbyes and set off for home. Although it was mostly easy going, the back tracks were
quite interesting. Thanks to everyone for coming along.

Joke Corner
Subject: Only a farm kid would see it this way!
When you're from the farm, your perception is a little bit different.
A farmer drove to a neighbour's farmhouse and knocked at the door.
A boy, about 9, opened the door.
"Is your dad or mom home?" said the farmer.
"No, they went to town."
"How about your brother, Howard, Is he here?"
"No, he went with Mom and Dad."
The farmer stood there for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other, mumbling to himself,
when the young boy says,
"I know where all the tools are, if you want to borrow one, or I can give Dad a message."
"Well," said the farmer uncomfortably. "No, I really want to talk to your Dad, about your brother Howard
getting my daughter Suzy pregnant".
The boy thought for a moment...then says, "You'll have to talk to my Dad about that. I know he charges
$500 for the bulls and $150 for the pigs, but I don't know how much he charges for Howard."
