ABOUT Summer Art Trail is a journey between places around Leicester. Exhibitions and events will be held across the city celebrating visual art, film, photography, installation, spoken word and music. The Trail is held in different venues within walking distance of each other and this year is included as part of City Festival 2015. Summer Art Trail highlights art organisations within Leicester, whilst supporting the local community, small independent businesses and showcasing local, national and international artists. Summer Art Trail was devised and organised by Silver Vine Arts, a non-profit, artist led collective whose mission is to enhance and highlight the arts within Leicester. As our main activities as Silver Vine Arts we set up galleries in unexpected areas, host internships and placements and help to train graduates into paid employment throughout the year. Look out for our contemporary art stall ‘The Encounter Counter’ which highlights 22 up and coming artists; Tracy Kershaw, Oliver Legar, Ruth Singer, Wayne Mitchelson, Ashok Mistry, and James Chantry are to name but a few. Works are sold at low cost allowing members of the public to purchase art works whilst also helping to raise money to support next year’s Trail. Donations are invaluable so please feel free to give what you can by buying artists’ work, Paypal money via [email protected] or paying directly through our website - summerarttrail. weebly.com This will help to go towards next year’s Trail. We would like to say a big thank you to all our volunteers, resident artists, curators, stewards, contributing organisations, performers and musicians. For two months she will be spending her time collating, mapping, drawing, walking and recording while investigating the local histories and physical artifacts found in buildings, on the streets and in the recording archives. She intends to use sound recordings, drawings and sculptural interventions to create something new and poetic, which respond to the artifacts of the local area. “insects – no matter how lifeless they appear to be – have a sort of agency, one where they can connect with time, a kind of synesthesia of our present with the past.” - Feb 2015. Her practice includes drawing, sculpture, installation, which investigate elegiac and somatic qualities through material form. She unravels possible meaning through the playful and exploratory handling of materials until the final objects present references or triggers for the spectator to experience a contradiction between two opposite states of being. Key to her practice is the attention to detail through the repetition of tiny forms; creating a feeling of obsessive thoroughness, yet, contrasting with an anarchic sense of a loss of control. Supported By the Fine Art and Photography Research Group, De Montfort University. 8 THE QUEEN OF BRADGATE This space invited artists to collaborate, share in ideas and respond to the walls that echo the history of the building. New to the trail this year is The Queen of Bradgate’s atmospheric top floor rooms. The Queen of Bradgate is a newly renovated pub on High Street, the upper floor is host to Silver Vine Arts HQ and artists’ studio space. For 2 months leading up to the Summer Art Trail, artists in residence and members of Silver Vine Arts have collaborated, shared ideas and responded to the walls that echo the history of the aged building. The work produced features alongside the festival’s Open Call artists, selected by Silver Vine Arts. Joe Moran ALISON ALLEN Alison Allen’s work treats a building as a body; a body of memories. “However functional we require a building to be our occupancy scars it and layers of experience build up in its fabric”. [email protected] alisonballen.carbonmade. com DARREN O’BRIEN Darren O’Brien is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice is centered on a deep investigation of our physical, social, political, historical and psychological relationship with landscape. [email protected] atrestinmotion.wordpress. com FRANCISCA SANCHEZ Francisca Sanchez explores the drama of sea, landscape and the urban environment with photography, mixed media and acrylics. [email protected] instagram.com/ franniesanchez/ JOE MORAN Joe Moran has developed an exploration of systems and chance based processes that form a variety of sculpture, installation and digital media [email protected] joemoran.wordpress.com 9 JONJO ELLIOTT Jonjo Elliott explores the crossover point of digital and traditional processes, interested in the social aspect of the world we inhabit, the people we encounter and the environment that surrounds us. Her work investigates the changing ambience between places Leila will be previewing the first step of a sixteen month project with the final work shown at Summer Art Trail 2016. See how it changes.
