The YamahaXS400 A motorcyclewith a split-personality
The YamahaXS400 is very definitely a mororcycle
with a split-personality-butnot in the infamous
"Dr jekyll and Mr hyde" sense.
Both sidesof the
XS400 character are good sides, for the motorcycle is truly one that is hard to fault.
One side of the XS4O0characteris the longdistancetouring machine.A 90 mph cruisercapable of gobbling up the motorway miles at a more
rateand still returningeconomical
fuel consumptionfiguresevenwhen well-loaded.
A bigger 16 litre tank is fitted (5 litres more than
last year'smodel) for the long-distancemen.
The other facetof the machine'spersonalityis
its role as an about-town commuter bike. the
XS400 is designedto trickle through the tramc ar
little morethan enginetickover speedand then to
respondto the throttle with a quick, smoothsurge
of accelerationwhen a gap in the traffic appears.
It is also designedto cover high mileagewith
simpleservicingand the minimum of maintenance.
For example,a special three-phase,electromagneticfield coil systemwill keep the battery
fully-chargedeven if the bike spendsthe whole
week running in "stop-go" traffic in short runs.

full instrumentation -speedometer.

Cast alloy wheelsare fitted as standard to the XS-seriesand contribute greatly to the clean, modern styting. Stronger. easier to
maintain and more eye-catchingthan the old spoked variety, they
are also dynamically-balancedfor smoother-running and better
tire wear. A big, powerful,267 mm disc brake is fitted to the front.
Forks and Suspension
Soft suspensiongives a comfortable ride but the triangulated,
cradle frame ensuresgood handling along with it. Rear shock
absorbershave five adjustmentsettingswhile the front forks have
