Are You Aging Well? The spotlighted dimension this month is
Intellectual Wellness. “Think about What You are Thinking About”
Friday, October 14 at 11 a.m.at the Wood County Senior Center
This workshop is based on What were you just thinking? If caught off guard by that
question you might not even remember. But those below-the-radar thoughts can affect
our mood our relationships and major life decisions, and over time affect our very
personality. This course explores how our brain processes thoughts and translates them
into hormonal signals to our bodies, patterns of thought that contribute to depression and anxiety, and ways to
break the cycle of automatic negative thoughts and live more mindfully.
Monica Birsen is a mental health counselor. She has been practicing as a licensed counselor since the year
2000 and specializes in depression and related conditions. Monica works from a holistic perspective and
believes in the importance of maintaining balance and a multi-systems approach to long term mental and

Opioid Abuse
Prescription opioid abuse in the elderly is reaching unprecedented levels and is an urgent concern. Out
of all medications prescribed in the United States, those 65 and older use more than any other age group,
some sources reporting at a rate of at least one third. And last year 2.8 million seniors abused prescription
drugs. From 2000 to 2014 the rate of overdose deaths, involving opioids increased by 200%. According to
data recently reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 16,000 people
die from prescription pain reliever overdoses each year – that translates to 44 people a day.
The two types of medicines, most commonly seen, that have a high potential for addiction:
#1) Opioids: Used to control pain
Oxycontin – oxycodone
Percocet – oxycodone combined with acetaminophen
Vicodin – hydrocodone combined with acetaminophen
#2) Benzodiazepines: used to treat anxiety, panic attacks or insomnia
Valium – diazepam
Ativan – lorazepam
Xanax – alprazolam
Klonopin – clonazepam
*please note other prescription drugs used to control pain or
treat sleeping problems may also cause addiction.
When talking about substance abuse and addiction, most people think about teenager and young adults,
much of the public education is devoted to addiction prevention beginning in the elementary years – most
people would be surprised to learn that substance abuse and addiction is actually a growing problem among
senior citizens. In older adults, even moderate substance abuse can be dangerous. Older people metabolize
foods and substances at different – usually slower rates, making it easier to accumulate dangerously high
concentrations of drugs and alcohol. The problem with opiates is that the body develops a tolerance,
meaning a higher dose is needed to achieve the same effects. The number of prescriptions for opioids –
which is in the same class of drugs as heroin – has nearly quadrupled from 1999 to 2013. Approximately 259
million opioid pain prescriptions were written – enough to supply every American adult with a bottle of pills!
Signs of an opioid overuse include:
Signs of opioid overdose:
Drowsy all the time
Slow or shallow breathing
Lack of motivation
Inability to stay awake or speak if awake
Withdrawn from family & friends
Limpness, lifelessness
Decrease in every day function/quality of life
Pale, clammy skin
Preoccupation with obtaining the drug
Blue fingernails or lips
If you think someone has overdosed Call 911 immediately, then try to wake them up and keep them
awake. If vomiting occurs, roll them on their side to avoid choking. If someone you live with or love
misuses opioids, think about purchasing a rescue drug called Naloxone (Narcan).
To get help and treatment in Wood County call 211, the Recovery
Helpline or the Wood County Alcohol, Drug Addiction, Mental Health
Services Board at 419-352-8475 to find a provider.
**BG Police Dept. and the Wood County Sherrif’s Office provide secure locations to drop off old or unused
medications.

you might consider helping with, but are afraid to participate because you ―think you cannot do it?‖ Please…
reconsider! And I will tell you why!
A number of years ago, John
“Jack” Roesler from Rossford (see
insert) had health issues and
WCCOA was in need of an individual to help deliver meals. After being on our meals for a couple of
weeks, Roesler decided it was time
for him to participate and give
back. One of the ways he thought
would be beneficial was to deliver
meals to residents in his area!
Roesler has been delivering meals now for twelve
(12) years and finds that it gives him ―new life‖ knowing he is helping others! One of the things I have read
about volunteering has been proven to be true, time and
time again – individuals who volunteer live longer because they are wanting to help others!
In a way, that is our Happy Family scenario at all of
our sites! All seven (7) WCCOA area senior centers
(Bowling Green, Perrysburg, Pemberville, Wayne,
North Baltimore, Rossford, and Walbridge) have their
own personalities due, in part, to our ―family members‖
who attend each of the sites! Yes…we are like family,
helping in whatever way we can…getting the place set
up for the Noon meal; cleaning up after the meal;
playing games; having conversation; watching a movie;
teaching a craft; delivering meals to other ―family‖
members who are unable to attend the local senior
center!
Now...isn’t it time YOU became a Jack Roesler
who says the best thing he likes about his delivering
meals is, ―Knowing that the people I deliver food to
appreciate my work. I always try to leave them upbeat,
with a smile on their face, or at least a positive
outlook.‖?
Have I caught your attention with something? If so,
I would love to discuss it with you! Please call me,
Jackie Metz, the WCCOA Volunteer Coordinator, at
419-353-5661 or 1-800-367-4935, Extension 1005.
Or…if you want to practice your computer skills, you
can reach me by email at [email protected] ! Looking
forward to some time with YOU!
