Our internationally renowned Colonial Area
offers you a trip to the past. You can ride horsedrawn carriages, stroll the streets of the restored
area and mix with interpreters dressed in the
18th century costumes, and watch crafters at
work as they demonstrate the colonial trades.
Tour the campus of William & Mary the site of
the oldest American academic buildings still in
continuous use.
Within easy commuting distance of Williamsburg
are Jamestown and Yorktown, the other two
points of the acclaimed Historic Triangle.
Jamestown is the first permanent English settlement dating from 1607. Yorktown tells the story
of the American Revolution. Both the Yorktown
Victory Center and the Jamestown Visitor’s Center
provide excellent visits into our past.
Award winning golf courses abound in the
Williamsburg area and dining is at its finest. Dine
at a Colonial Tavern in the heart of the restored
area or enjoy one of the splendid restaurants in
the area.
Shopping is a pleasure with impressive shops
in Merchants Square adjacent to the restored
area. The Williamsburg Pottery, Williamsburg
Outlet Mall, Prime Outlets at Williamsburg, the
Village Shops at Kingsmill and many others can
be found throughout the area. And, of course,
Williamsburg is also home to Busch Gardens and
Water Country, USA.
We welcome you to our community and are
sure that you will find it to be a special place
to visit. We hope that your time spent with us
is memorable and extend a warm invitation to
return.
It is a great pleasure to welcome you to our
wonderful community. Historic Yorktown is
home of the Yorktown Battlefield where our
nation’s freedom was won in 1781. Today York
County offers visitors world class museums,
indoor and outdoor water parks and a unique
riverfront experience. Immerse yourself in 300
years of history and relax in a hotel or bed and
breakfast nestled among the village streets and
paths overlooking the York River. Here you can
experience 18th century homes to 21st century
merchants and modern-day excursions. Explore
the Yorktown Victory Center that chronicles the
American Revolution era. Walk in the footsteps
of General George Washington, where the
culminating battle of the American Revolution
took place. October 19, 2009 is the anniversary
celebration of the Victory at Yorktown. This event
will feature tall ship displays, re-enactment
camps, concerts, fifes and drums performances
and much more.
York County is part of the Historic Triangle
and is just a short drive from Williamsburg or
Jamestown. You can also arrive by boat and
dock at one of our floating piers at Riverwalk
Landing, Yorktown’s newest shopping and dining
destination. If you want more action, visit Water
Country USA, one of the east coasts largest water
parks or Great Wolf Lodge where the indoor
water park and amenities are always 84 degrees.
York County is proud to be the home of
Yorktown, one of three historic destinations
known world-wide. York’s governing body and
the county’s proud citizens encourage you to fully
experience this special place in American history.
In 1607, 104 men and boys came ashore on
Jamestown Island to establish the first permanent
English Settlement. James City County is a much
different place than 400 years ago. Now nationally
known historic sites, world class theme parks, shopping,
dining, tournament level golf courses and outdoor
activities are part of a 21st century experience.
As part of the Historic Triangle, James City
County is home to Jamestown Settlement,
Historic Jamestowne, Busch Gardens, and
Kingsmill Resort and Spa. If you include the
natural beauty of the James River and Colonial
Parkway, you will find your experience here as
diverse and exciting as you want it to be.
Not many areas can boast of so many new
and different things to do. You and your family
can retrace the footsteps of early colonists and
Virginia Indians at Jamestown Settlement, discover amazing artifacts as uncovered at archeological
dig sites at Historic Jamestowne on Jamestown
Island or become part of history as you cook, fire
muskets or grind corn at Jamestown Settlement.
Busch Gardens is the east coasts premier
theme park featuring thrilling roller coasters,
entertainment, food and rides. Recently voted
the most beautiful theme park.
Kingsmill Resort and Spa is home to the LPGA
Michelob ULTRA Open, making it a premier golf
destination. If shopping is your sport, Prime
Outlets offers designer and specialty stores.
From those of us who work, live and play in the
Historic Triangle – James City County, Williamsburg,
and York County – we invite you to visit our unique
area to connect with the beginnings of your

formation of the new nation, is chronicled through a timeline and thematic
exhibits. Re-creations of an 18th-century farm and Continental Army
camp provide a setting for costumed interpreters to discuss daily life during
and after the Revolution.

{ Virginia’s Colonial Capital }
colonial williamsburg
In 18th-century Williamsburg’s shops, taverns, government buildings, and homes of George Washington, Thomas
Jefferson, Patrick Henry and other Virginia patriots established the ideals—liberty, independence and personal
freedom—that influenced the founding of our nation and have inspired Americans and others around the world.
Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area comprises 301 acres, which include
88 original 18th-century and early 19th-century structures and hundreds
of houses, shops, public buildings and outbuildings that have been
reconstructed on their original foundations.
The Governor’s Palace is just one of the highlights in the Historic Area.
When it was completed in 1722, the residence of Virginia’s royal governor
was considered one of the finest buildings in British North America.
The elegant and imposing residence was reconstructed on its original
foundations and opened to the public in April 1934. It is furnished to reflect
the occupancy of the last royal governor, the Earl of Dunmore. The Palace
complex includes a stable, kitchen and related outbuildings, and elaborate
gardens. The Palace celebrates its 75th anniversary as an exhibition
building in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area in 2009.
The Capitol was the site of many important political events that led to
Virginia’s participation in the War for Independence. The most significant
of these took place May 15, 1776, when Virginia’s legislators unanimously
adopted a resolution instructing their delegates in Philadelphia to
introduce a resolution that the colonies be declared independent from
England, nearly two months before the Continental Congress adopted the
Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia. The Capitol celebrates its 75th
anniversary as an exhibition building in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic
Area in 2009.
One of Virginia’s most important taverns during the 18th century, the
Raleigh was established about 1717. It was the center for social, commercial
and political gatherings, small private and large public dinners, lectures
and exhibits, and auctions of merchandise and property. In 1769, when
Governor Lord Botetourt dissolved the House of Burgesses, many indignant
burgesses reconvened in the Apollo Room at the Raleigh to draw up a boycott
of British goods. A similar meeting was conducted five years later when the
assembly again was dissolved. Phi Beta Kappa was founded here in 1776.
The original building burned December 11, 1859. The reconstructed tavern
14
WHMA Visitor’s Guide was the first Colonial Williamsburg exhibition building to open to the
public, in September 1932.
One of Williamsburg’s original 18th-century buildings, the Courthouse of
1770 was the seat of local government and housed municipal and county
courts until 1932. The building dominates Market Square, a green open
space halfway between the Capitol and the college.
Inside public exhibition buildings, you’ll find furnishings and accessories
from one of the world’s great collections of 17th- and 18th-century English
and American antiques. The collection is among the most valuable of its
kind, including a fully representative spectrum of furniture, silver and other
metalwork, ceramics, textiles, prints and paintings.
More than 60,000 items have been assembled and are displayed in
more than 200 period rooms. Exhibition buildings include the Capitol,
Courthouse, Governor’s Palace, Raleigh Tavern, Wetherburn’s Tavern,
Magazine, Public Gaol, Thomas Everard House, Public Hospital and homes
of patriots Peyton Randolph and George Wythe.
Colonial Williamsburg’s landscape and gardens grow gloriouslysumptuously formal, characteristic of the 18th-century penchant for
elegant order. The re-created gardens of today, described by critics as
among the great examples of the Western world, evolved from old maps
of the town, landscape plans of Colonial Virginia plantations and England’s
gardens at the time of King William III.
Especially recommended is a tour of the formal garden at the Governor’s
Palace, worthy of at least an afternoon’s dalliance, but a “must-see” no
matter what your schedule.
The Workplace
In the late 1700s, Williamsburg was a thriving community. Successful
merchants stocked their shops with expensive English imports and crafts
of all kinds made in the colonies. Merchants often met in the open area
at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street, just before the Capitol wall, to set

Men in 18th-century Williamsburg involved
themselves in occupations and businesses ranging
from government and military service to medicine
and wheelwrighting. Probably the largest program
of diversified 18th-century trades in the world can
be found in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Trades
shops, scattered throughout the colonial capital.
Here you can find such artisans as the blacksmith,
shoemaker, printer, cabinetmaker and wigmaker
plying their trades and handicrafts just as they did in
colonial times.
Guests can observe these skilled workers using
colonial period tools fashioning articles of beauty,
utility, and character. At the same time they’ll learn
much of the daily activities of the “middling sort”
– men and women who conducted respectable
small businesses. These shops are open year-round
on rotating schedules.
To provide guests with a unique experience each
time they visit, Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic
Trades provides a variety of seasonal programs and
activities. Seasonal demonstrations include:
• Secrets of the Chocolate Maker—In the winter,
spring and fall, guests can witness the long process
of 18th-century chocolate making – from grinding
cocoa beans to forming a chocolate patty to be
grated into powder.
• The Arts and Mysteries of Brewing—Beer
making demonstrations are held at the Palace
Scullery in the spring and fall.
• Brick Firing—Each October Colonial Williamsburg’s
brickmakers build a kiln and fire bricks that were
molded during the summer months.
Minorities: African Americans and Women
In 18th-century Williamsburg, free and enslaved
African Americans comprised 51 percent of the
population. Their lives are detailed in several
programs offered at two distinctive venues.
Great Hopes Plantation is an activity-based
interpretive site that invites guests to witness a
way of life that was found in 18th-century Virginia.
Here guests watch the re-creation and evolution of
an 18th-century plantation, learn about enslaved
African-Virginians and their masters, and learn how
they lived and worked on a typical middle-sized
rural Virginia farm.
While Great Hopes focuses on the rural life,
the Peyton Randolph House site in the middle of
Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area presents life
of African Americans in the 18th-century capital
of Virginia. The newest African American program,
“Two Worlds, One Roof, One Law,” focuses on the

mothers, hostesses and sometimes business
women or artisans. Upper-class women in
Williamsburg were taught as girls to read and
write, sew and properly entertain. They also were
given music and dance lessons. As adults, upperclass women supervised their households, cared
for their families, and enjoyed a constant round of
balls and social gatherings.
Women of the “middling sort” and lower
classes often worked in shops, businesses or
craft workshops and developed skills as weavers,
milliners and even printers. Others assisted in their
husbands’ shops or taverns and often managed
these businesses after their husbands’ deaths.
Contributions 18th-century women made to their
communities are the focus of Women’s History
Month in March. Scenes, tours, programs and
special presentations explore the various roles that
our foremothers filled in birthing a new nation.
Leisure and Entertainment
As the capital of colonial Virginia, Williamsburg
had an 18th-century reputation as the cultural
center of the colony. Colonial Williamsburg
continues that tradition today. Guests enjoy
evening events that can be seen nowhere but here.
Music, tours, colonial dancing, dramas and plays
are offered at various locations throughout town.
Programs include:
• A Grand Medley of Entertainments – This
18th-century “variety show,” a forerunner of
modern circuses and vaudeville, includes music,
magic, feats of strength and other amusements
guaranteed to please audiences young and old.
• Listen My Children: Legends, Myths and
Fables for Families. The 45-minute gathering
offers fun and interesting stories that the whole
family will enjoy. Storytellers share their tales by
firelight as young and old hear some of the same
legends that entertained families of centuries past.
• Dance, Our Dearest Diversion - The Hall of the
House of Burgesses comes to life as you experience
one of the most favorite pastimes of colonial
Virginians during this audience participatory
program. The dancers discuss various types of
18th century dances, from country dances to
minuets, and demonstrate them for the audience.
At various intervals throughout the program, the

This program connects visitors to the
tumultuous events of the American Revolution,
presenting the stories of Williamsburg
residents from 1774 to 1781 in alternating
two-hour outdoor dramas that take place
in their original locations. “Get Revved!!!
Revolutionary City for Families and Patriots

30th Anniversary of Colonial Williamsburg’s
African American programs.
2009 marks the 30th anniversary of Colonial
Williamsburg’s African American programs.
Colonial Williamsburg offers a variety of programs
that demonstrate how African Americans,
both free and enslaved, lived in the 18thcentury capital of Virginia. Guests to Colonial
Williamsburg’s Historic Area can meet Nation
Builders, 18th-century Williamsburg residents
who helped shape their times and continue
today to influence and inspire our ideals and
visions of the American dream. At Great Hopes
Plantation, guests follow an interpreter through
the reconstructed 18th-century rural kitchen,
slave quarters and agricultural and livestock fields
for a look at day-to-day living for rural enslaved
families during the program, “Workin’ the Soil,
Healin’ the Soul." Colonial Williamsburg offers
evening programs that explore additional facets
of African American life. During the interactive
program, “Papa Said, Mama Said,” guests explore
the significance of stories passed down from their
elders. “African American Music” explores the
diverse nature of African American musical culture
in colonial Virginia.
“Sidewalks to Rooftops: Outdoor Folk Art.” The exhibition bears witness to the creative
spirit that once enlivened the American landscape
through 19th- and 20th-century artworks that
were exposed to the elements and survived.
“Sidewalks to Rooftops” presents signboards,
storefront figures, weather vanes, marine
carvings, whirligigs, carousel animals and other
objects originally intended for use outdoors. The
exhibit celebrates the 19th-century predecessors
of modern advertising, including painted
signboards featuring eye-catching symbols and
three-dimensional trade figures—such as cigar
store Indians—that have largely disappeared
from today’s sidewalks, building facades and
countertops. Through 2013.
Reconstruction of the Charlton Coffeehouse.
The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is
reconstructing Richard Charlton’s Coffeehouse
on its original foundations to recreate the 1765
hotbed of political, business and social activity
adjacent to the colonial Capitol. The project is
one of the most important reconstructions on the
Historic Area’s Duke of Gloucester Street in half a
century. The reconstruction is designed to appear
as close to the original structure as historical,
archaeological, and architectural evidence
permits. ■

{ Re-creating America’s First Permanent English Colony }
jamestown settlement
Four hundred years ago, on December 20, 1606, three merchant ships filled with passengers and
cargo embarked from England on a voyage that would set the course of American history.
The Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery
arrived in Virginia in the spring of 1607. On May 14,
their 104 passengers – all men and boys – began
building on the banks of the James River, what was
to be America’s first permanent English settlement,
predating Plymouth in Massachusetts by 13 years.
Through living history, a film and gallery
exhibits, the aspirations of these people and
the hardships they faced are vividly depicted at
Jamestown Settlement, a museum operated by the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Jamestown Settlement

and 10 minutes from Williamsburg, Jamestown’s
successor as capital of the Virginia colony.
On board life-size replicas of the three 1607 ships,
you’ll get a sense of the spirit of opportunity that
motivated the Jamestown colonists as well as the
difficult living conditions endured by 17th-century
voyagers. In the museum’s re-created fort, you’ll
see how the colonists coped with an unfamiliar
environment and brought English customs, religion,
dress, food and building styles to the New World.
You’ll be introduced to the Powhatan Indians, longtime inhabitants of coastal Virginia, in a setting
re-created from an early 17th-century archaeological site.
Your visit to Jamestown Settlement begins with
an introductory film that presents an overview of
Jamestown’s origins in England and the early years of
the colony. Events and themes presented in the film
are explored in detail in expansive exhibition galleries.
Presenting current historical knowledge,
innovative design and a distinctive collection,
the galleries chronicle the nation's 17th-century
beginnings in Virginia in the context of its
Powhatan Indian, English and western central
African cultures. The first of three sections
introduces visitors to pre-17th-century Virginia and
provides overviews of the “parent” cultures, with
full-scale dioramas portraying a Powhatan Indian
setting and a dwelling in Angola, homeland of the
first Africans in Virginia, and an English streetscape.
Exhibits also explore European overseas trade and
colonization and advances in shipbuilding and
navigation that ultimately led to the formation of
the Virginia Company, the English investment group
that sponsored the Jamestown colony.
The second section is introduced with a scale
model of a 1607 Powhatan community and
explores the complexity of the relationship between
Virginia’s colonists and the native Powhatan
people, ranging from trade to conflict, and the
role of cultural intermediaries. Exhibits show how
the English secured a foothold in Virginia with
the establishment of settlements and economic
enterprises and set the course of the future with
the introduction of tobacco as a cash crop. While
the first documented Africans to arrive in Virginia
goWilliamsburg.com
Williamsburg Visitor’s Guide
in 1619 may eventually have won their freedom,
the emergence of lifetime servitude for later African
immigrants was motivated by the demand for labor to
produce tobacco. An object theater chronicles African
encounters with Europeans and the development of
the transatlantic slave trade.
The third section of exhibits provides an overview
of the political, social and economic development
and expansion of the Virginia colony during the 17th
century, while Jamestown served as its capital. Fullscale structures re-created from archaeological sites
depict Powhatan, slave and planter dwellings of
the late 1600s. Short films describe the evolution
and impact of government in 17th-century Virginia
and the legacies of Jamestown – cultural diversity,
language and representative government – that were
the seeds of the United States of America.
Leaving the indoor exhibits, visitors arrive at the
Powhatan Indian village where costumed interpreters
discuss and demonstrate the Powhatan way of life. The
village, consisting of several dwellings, a garden and
a ceremonial dance circle, is based on archaeological
findings at a site once inhabited by Paspahegh Indians,
the Powhatan tribal group closest to Jamestown, and
descriptions recorded by English colonists.
From the Indian village, a path leads to a pier where
the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery are docked.
Visitors can talk with costumed interpreters about the
four-and-a-half month voyage from England.
Seasonally, a riverfront discovery area provides
information about European, Virginia Indian and
African economic activities associated with water,
including navigation, boatbuilding, fishing,
commodities and trade.
Triangular James Fort is a re-creation of the one
constructed by the Jamestown colonists on their arrival
in 1607. Inside the wooden stockade are wattle-anddaub structures with thatched roofs representing
Jamestown’s earliest buildings including dwellings, a
church, a storehouse and an armory. Interpreters are
engaged in a variety of activities typical of daily life in
the early 17th century, such as agriculture, carpentry,
blacksmithing and the preparation of meals.
Visitors are welcome to handle many of the
17th-century reproduction items used in Jamestown
Settlement’s living-history program. You’re invited
to grind corn, help make cordage and pitch corncob
darts in the Powhatan Indian village. In the fort, you
can try on armor and toss quoits.
Jamestown Settlement, located on Route 31 South,
is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily, and until 6:00 p.m.
from June 15 through August 15. You should allow three
hours for your visit. Admission is $14.00 for adults and
$6.50 for children ages 6 through 12. A combination
ticket is available with the Yorktown Victory Center. Call

historic jamestowne
Explore the site of the first permanent English settlement in America and watch archaeologists uncover the
remains of the 1607 James Fort. Tour a 17th-century tower and reconstructed church.
Come, walk in the steps of Captain John Smith and Pocahontas as we explore America's beginnings.
Here is where the successful English colonization of North America began.
In 1994, archaeologists led by Dr. William Kelso,
director of archaeology for the Association for the
Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), began
their search for the remains of the first permanent
English settlement's 1607 fort. By September of
1996, they had sufficient evidence to declare that
they had found James Fort. Digging has continued
ever since and more than one million artifacts
have been excavated from the fort site.
Now, the Historic Jamestowne Archaearium,
a major new exhibition facility that opened
in May 2006, displays more than 1,000 of
those artifacts and tells the story of how the
archaeologists found the fort and what the
excavation has revealed about America’s first
permanent English settlement.
Historic Jamestowne is jointly administered
by APVA and the National Park Service and
preserves the sight of America’s first permanent
English settlement.

{ Beautiful, Historic Campus }
the college of william & mary
The colonial campus of the College of William and Mary, still intact after 300 years of wars, fires and
changing fortunes, is the second oldest institution of higher education in the nation.
“Although there are a number of surviving buildings
on the campuses of America’s nine colonial colleges,
none of them really preserves the small-scale academic
setting of the period,” says Thad Tate, a William and
Mary history professor emeritus. The first structure
of the three original colonial buildings, called the Sir
Christopher Wren Building after its famous British
architect, boasts a number of historical distinctions: it
is the oldest academic structure in continuous use in
America; the oldest public building in Williamsburg;
and the first to be restored.
By the 1730s, the other two buildings of the College were completed: the
Brafferton, which was originally constructed to be an Indian school, and the
President’s House, the oldest home of a college president in the nation.
In 1691, the Rev. James Blair, representative of the Bishop of London, was
sent to England by the General Assembly of Virginia to secure a charter and
endowments for an institution of higher education.
As a result of his efforts, the College was granted a
royal charter by King William III and Queen Mary II
on February 8, 1693. The charter named Blair as first
president. In December 1693, the College purchased
320 acres in “Middle Plantation.” By 1699, the capital
of Virginia was moved to Middle Plantation, renamed
Williamsburg, and a new town began to take shape.
Thomas Jefferson attended the College in
Williamsburg along with two other future American
Presidents, James Monroe and John Tyler. Also among
its early alumni were 16 members of the Continental Congress, four signers of
the Declaration of Independence, and more than 100 Supreme Court justices,
U.S. senators and representatives, governors, and ministers to foreign countries.
Although the designation of “college” remains in the name, William and Mary
today is a public university with an enrollment of over 7,600. ■

The Williamsburg Winery is Virginia’s largest winery, producing over 60,000 cases of wine annually.
Open year round and located just minutes from Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area.
The Williamsburg Winery was established
in 1985 by the Duffeler family. The first wine
produced, Governor’s White, was released in 1988
and won a Gold medal within two weeks. Today,
the Governor’s White is the most popular wine
made at the winery. Wines produced here are
appealing to a broad range of wine lovers from
the occasional wine drinker to the enthusiast.
The “Wine Enthusiast” awarded John Adlum
Chardonnay a “Best Buy” and "Wine Spectator"
gave this chardonnay 86 points. For the second
consecutive year, Decanter Magazine of London awarded the Act 12
Chardonnay as one of the "Best Wines in the World."
Most of the wines have historical references listed on the back of each
bottle. Did you know that Governor’s White was named after Governor
Berkeley, Virginia’s first Governor? The 50+ acres of vineyards which
surround the winery offer a beautiful backdrop of the Old World Style
Village where the winery is located. Tours of the facility and Wine Tastings
are held daily by professionally trained staff members.
Your guided tour includes a video presentation on grape growing
(Viticulture) and winemaking (Oenology), a stroll through the barrel
cellar and a visit to the production area. In our museum you will enjoy
a collection of unique and rare vintage wine bottles with a grand finale
tasting of seven of our wines in an etched wine
glass that is yours to take home as a keepsake.
Reserve Wine Tastings are available daily with
advance reservations held in the Private Wine Cellar.

story of our nation’s birth. Americans won their
independence here during the last major battle of
the American Revolutionary War on October 19,
1781, when British troops surrendered to General
George Washington and his French allies. Yorktown
played a very important role in American history.
Today, Yorktown is joined by the scenic Colonial
Parkway to Williamsburg and Jamestown and
is located just 12 miles east of Williamsburg. It
remains much as it was during the waning days of
the Revolution. Although Yorktown is best known
as the site where America won its independence, no
battles are being fought here today, which leaves
Yorktown a charming and peaceful riverside village.
Whether it’s reliving the chronicles of America’s
struggle for independence, touring the historic

{ America’s Independence }
yorktown victory center
In the spring of 1781, British General Lord Cornwallis led his army into Virginia. Opposing him was the smaller
American force led by Lafayette. This is where the last important conflict of the American Revolution was fought.
Washington, in conference with the French General Rochambeau,
decided that a combined land and naval battle in Virginia was now
possible, as the French fleet was sailing north to the Chesapeake Bay.
Washington then quietly moved the bulk of French and American troops
from New York to Yorktown.
On September 5th, the French fleet intercepted the British fleet outside
the Virginia Capes and forced it to retire. Washington and Rochambeau
arrived at Yorktown in late September and laid siege to the town. The
British surrendered on October 19, 1781, virtually ending the Revolution.
To gain an understanding of events that led to America’s war for
independence and the impact of the war upon ordinary men and women,
start your tour at the state-operated Yorktown Victory Center, a museum of
the American Revolution.
Follow the Road to Revolution, an outdoor walkway to the main
museum building where an introductory gallery presents the
Declaration of Independence as a radical document that inspired
decisive action. Exhibits along the “Road” describe events that resulted
in the transformation of the mood in Britain’s American colonists from
acceptance of the status quo in mid-18th century to rebellion 25 years
later. The experiences of a diverse group of people who lived during the
Revolutionary War are the focus of unique permanent indoor exhibits.
In a large gallery entitled Witnesses to Revolution, you will meet
10 individuals who lived during the 18th century and recorded their
observations in letters, diaries, and pay and pension applications. The
witnesses are characterized by life-size cast figures, graphics and artifacts
representative of their lives and spoken words excerpted from their own
writings.
Another gallery, Converging on Yorktown, describes the decisive
campaign of the Revolution and the diversity of people and nationalities
who were involved in the siege and British surrender at Yorktown in 1781.
The emphasis on individual “witnesses” to the Revolution continues in a
38
WHMA Visitor’s Guide
documentary film, “A Time of Revolution.”
From Converging on Yorktown, you will descend to the lower floor to
experience the fascinating story of Yorktown’s Sunken Fleet, ships lost or
scuttled during the Yorktown siege.
“The Legacy of Yorktown: Virginia Beckons,” examines how people
from many different cultures, those in Virginia before the 1607 founding
of Jamestown and those who arrived later, shaped a new society. This
exhibition incorporates the theme of creating a new nation through
development of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. In a nearby space,
youngsters can try on 18th-century-style clothing.
The living-history program offers visitors the opportunity to experience
Revolutionary era life firsthand. Outside the main museum building are
re-creations of a Continental Army encampment and a 1780s farm where
costumed interpreters depict and discuss daily life during and after the
Revolution.
You may be recruited into military service in the encampment, and
watch demonstrations of musket and cannon loading and firing and 18thcentury medical practices. The encampment setting includes quarters for
commanding officers, the regimental surgeon and a dozen soldiers' tents.
The farm features a dwelling, a tobacco barn, a kitchen building, an herb
and vegetable garden, and an agricultural field where corn, tobacco, flax
and cotton are cultivated seasonally. Interpreters at the site engage in a
variety of domestic activities such as cooking, laundering and preparing
flax for cloth.
The Calender of Events pages list special activities. Open 9:00 a.m. to
5:00 p.m. daily; open until 6:00 p.m. from June 15 through August 15. The
Yorktown Victory Center is located on Route 1020 at the edge of Yorktown.
You should allow about two hours for your visit. Admission is $9.25 for
adults and $5.00 for children ages 6-12. A combination ticket is available
with Jamestown Settlement. For more information call 888-593-4682 toll

{ Battles for Independence }
yorktown battlefield
Jamestown is where America was born. Williamsburg is where our nation’s ideals matured. And, Yorktown is
where America became of age. Visit Yorktown Battlefield and take yourself back in time where history was made.
A tour of the Battlefield begins at the National
Park Service Visitor Center (Colonial National
Historical Park), where the battle on land and at
sea is presented through a series of multi-media
exhibits. You can walk through a full-sized replica
of the quarterdeck of a British warship, view the
movement of troops through a special lighted map
display, and browse through a beautiful collection of
Revolutionary War artifacts, including the tents used
by General George Washington to plan the siege. A
16-minute film, “Siege at Yorktown,” discusses the
importance of the battle, and an exhibit shows the
role of African Americans during and after the Revolutionary War.
The Visitor Center is open daily year-round from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.,
(closed Thanksgiving day, Christmas day and New Year’s day). Admission
is $10.00 per person, 16 and older which includes admission to Historic
Jamestowne. Golden Age, Golden Access, Golden
Eagle Passports and Interagency passes are honored.
Through careful examination of 18th-century
military maps and archaeological excavations, the
National Park Service has reconstructed a nearly
complete picture of General Washington’s siege.
Earth works and siege lines mark the positions of
British and American troops during the battle. Tours
of the Battlefield are conducted from the Visitor
Center by park rangers. Maps are also available for
a self-guided tour of the battlefield, encampment
areas and the Town of York.
The National Park Service maintains the restored 18th-century homes of
Augustine Moore and Thomas Nelson, Jr. Be sure to ask about these when you call
the National Park Service Visitor Center at (757) 898-2410 for dates and hours.
Visit Yorktown Battlefield and step back in time where history was made. ■

{ A Museum of the Odd and Unusual }
ripley’s believe it or not
Nowhere else in the world can you find the treasures of this modern day “Odditorium”.
Come and experience the Unbelievable!
Wherever Robert Ripley went, he searched for the odd and the unusual. In
his quest, he documented the customs and beliefs of many ancient, exotic
civilizations. Whenever possible he brought home artifacts from his journeys,
which today form the heart of the greatest collection of oddities ever assembled
and can bee seen in Ripley’s Believe it or Not! museums around the world.
The museum in Williamsburg, houses artifacts that span almost all of human
history. From prehistoric dinosaurs’ eggs to the 3000 year old mummified remains
of an Egyptian falcon, from African tribal artifacts to South American shrunken
heads, from strands of George Washington's hair to a golf ball driven on the moon,
the treasures in this modern day “Odditorium” provide a visual link with our past.
This museum has an entire gallery devoted to a variety of strange, beautiful

and unusual animals. Nowhere else in the world can you see a 500 lb. gorilla
made entirely out of nails in the same room as a genuine maneless albino
lion, or a two-headed magpie perched over a two-headed kitten.
After discovering strange and bizarre facts and marveling at the wonders
of nature, Ripley’s 4D theater offers a journey to the depths of the oceans and
a chance to save Tony the T-rex from a volcanic catastrophe. Learn how life
thrives in the deepest, darkest crevices on the planet and thrill to the heartpounding adventure awaiting anyone brave enough to enter Dino Island.

Now in their 16th year, Mystery Dinner
Playhouse has entertained thousands
with their unique blend of audience
participation, comedy, mystery and good
food.
When you arrive, you will be met at
the door by one or two of the evening’s
“suspects” who will help you find your seats,
show you to the cash bar, and get you ready
for the mystery about to unfold. With the
action taking place throughout the entire
room, keep a watchful eye open for clues
and jot down anything that looks suspicious.
Use your “clue dossier” which contains
riddles and puzzles to decipher, and bribe
money to use to entice the “suspects” to give
you better clues.
Between scenes, the wacky cast of characters
serve you a delicious four course dinner. This
gives you a chance to question each of the
suspects about key elements of the murder.
The dinner includes soup, salad, your choice
of Prime Rib, half of an Herb Roasted Chicken,
Broiled Salmon or Meatless Lasagna, dessert,
dinner rolls, ice tea and coffee. All are
included in the ticket price!
Audience members who are celebrating a
special occasion such as a birthday or
anniversary are honored with a hilarious
sing-a-long, and a “Super Sleuth” prize is given
to the person who best solves the mystery.
