Back on the boil
n case you haven’t noticed, taking tea is once

more in fashion. Waterford Wedgwood Royal
public relations manager Carolyn
Cavanough, says high tea has become the stylish
way for brides-to-be to celebrate with their
girlfriends before the big day.
“The old hens’ night out has become a lot more
stylish,” Carolyn says.
At the heart of every afternoon or morning tea,
however, is a good teapot. Carolyn says the best
teapots share several common features.
“A good teapot looks fantastic, does not drip or
leak and has a well-fitting lid that does not come
off while pouring,” she says.
Fine bone china teapots are the best, she says,

because they are more resistant to chips
and cracking. They also retain heat, ensuring
a better quality cup of tea.
Carolyn says to take care of your teapot you
should warm the pot before use and then rinse
it out afterwards. Soak it in bi-carb soda and
water to remove stains and use it regularly.
An avid teapot collector herself, Carolyn
says a beautiful pot and some carefully selected
cups and saucers can turn the ordinary into
something very special.
“If girlfriends drop in, you have a ready-made
tea party and your guests will think you have
gone to a lot of trouble,” she says. ■■
