Jean-Jacques
GOLDMAN…
French
Parents: Alter Goldman and Ruth
Ambrunn were both Jewish and had
emigrated from their native Poland
to France in the 1930s. They met
working for the French Resistance
and became naturalized French
citizens after the war. The couple
married in 1949 and Jean-Jacques
was the third of four children.
October 11, 1951
Jean-Jacques’
parents made sure
their son learned to
play the violin and
then the piano at an
early age. But it was
another genre of
music which would
influence JeanJacques early on,
when he discovered
Aretha Franklin’s soul
hit, “Think.” The song
was a veritable
revelation and in 1968
he abandoned
classical music and
“If you are listening to a modern French pop hit, chances are
took up the guitar.
you are listening to a song written by the multi-talented star,
Jean-Jacques Goldman… Although Goldman has always
refused to conform to the pop star mold, this talented
singer/songwriter remains a firm favorite with the French public.”

Carole FREDERICKS
African American
Parents: Jazz composer & arranger, Harry
Fredericks from St. Kitts met a gospel singing
school teacher, Mildred Shields of
Bennettsville, SC in Harlem, NY in early 1939.
Both shared a love of jazz standards, the big
band sound and the blues. The couple married
in late 1940. Following the birth of their first
child in 1941 they moved to Springfield, MA.
The Fredericks family thrived in Western Mass.
The household was filled with music, potent
conversation and people from around the world.
Mildred earned a Masters Degree in Education
and became the first Black teacher to integrate
the West Springfield School System. Tragedy
struck in 1954 when Harry, a construction
worker, was killed in a work-related accident.
Carole was just 2 years old and the youngest of
5 children.
June 5, 1952
Singer, background vocalist
Exposed to a wealth of musical genres as a
child, Carole appreciated a wide range of
music and singing styles. At age 5, her family
discovered she possessed a big, rich voice.
At first, Carole was uncomfortable with her
voice. When asked to sing in front of her 3rd
grade class, Carole turned her back to the
audience and sang facing the blackboard. A
great change took place by the time she
reached high school in the 1960s. Carole
willingly took to the stage dazzling parents,
teachers and students with songs by Bessie
Smith, Mahalia Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Sam
Cooke, Carole King, Aretha Franklin,
America, Donovan, The Beatles and more.
Finally she had embraced her gift. Carole had
discovered the power of music to transcend
differences and make friends.
"[Carole] arrived in France in 1979. Shortly afterwards she launched a career as a studio musician - i.e. one of
those people with extraordinary technical skills who put her talent at the service of other singers. In the
course of her career Carole provided backing vocals for a lot of different singers and that is how I came to
meet her myself"...Jean-Jacques Goldman.
