Is there ever a time when a scripture just seems to
resonate in your mind? Perhaps it is one that you
read recently...perhaps it was a part of a song that
you heard over the air waves or was sung by your
choir...or perhaps it just popped into your head. At
any rate, there it is, and it plays over, and over, and
over... When such a thing happens to me, it’s alright with me because somewhere therein could be a message that I need to
hear, OR one that I might need to encourage someone along the way.
With that thought in mind…

being paid. Jesus had to die that we might
be redeemed. For us to move out of darkness into light, Jesus had to move from the
light of heaven into a darkened world. For
us to be delivered from the power of Satan
to the power of God, Jesus Christ had to be
forsaken by God. For us to be delivered
from guilt to forgiveness, Jesus had to be
made sin for me. For Jesus to make us rich
with blessings, He had to become the poorest of poor. Redemption costs. Yet, Mary
Magdalene stood near the cross because it
was a place of redemption.
John 19:23-30
“Jesus, keep me near
the cross” are the
opening words to a
very familiar hymn.
How near the cross
would we have been
if we were there to
witness Jesus’ crucifixion? Our text today identifies four
significant people
who stood near the
cross when Jesus was
crucified. Let’s explore what it meant
to them to be near the cross.
Second, we see Salome who represents – A
Place of Rebuke
Who is Salome? Salome, is the wife of Zebedee and the mother of James and John
(Matthew20:20-23). She made a selfish
request of Jesus. “Can my two sons have
places of honor in kingdom?” Jesus responded (Matthew20:20-24) by letting her
know that she did not understanding what
she was asking. “Can they drink the cup
that I going to drink?” Jesus wanted Salome
to see that she wanted the glory of a crown
without the gruesomeness of the cross – a
prideful selfish request. Near the cross
Salome reminds us that our desires can and
do clash with the cost of discipleship. It is
near the cross where prideful selfishness is crucified and sacrificial living is
demonstrated.
First, we see Mary Magdalene who represents –
A Place of Redemption
Luke 8:2 tells us that Mary Magdalene was a
woman whom Jesus had cast out seven demons.
She had been in bondage to Satan for a long
time. He was at work in her life to destroy her,
cause havoc, wreck her physically, emotionally
and spiritually. Mary was in a hopeless and helpless situation.
Jesus delivered Mary from her bondage and set
her free. Mary Magdalene had her life redeemed
through a miraculous encounter with Jesus. This
is what Jesus did for Mary Magdalene. He redeemed her and bought her out of her miserable
condition.
Third, we see Mary, the Mother of Jesus
who represents – A Place of Reward
Mary was Jesus’ earthly mother. She suffered throughout her life because of Jesus.
Through the Bible in 2014
Redemption has a great cost. When Jesus delivered Mary Magdalene it cost Him something.
Standing there at the cross she saw the price

NEAR THE CROSS (Continued from page 6)
to watch over my mother. You are going to
take My mother, and you are going to be a
son to her.” For John, the cross was a place
of responsibility.
She suffered emotional wounds of rejection
and abandonment. Her reputation as a virgin
was tainted. Jesus does not ignore her but
puts His pain on pause to provide comfort for
all she has suffered on His behalf. “Dear
woman, here is your son”. Mary is losing a
Son, but rather than focus on the loss, she
receives a reward of a son who will compassionately care for her throughout the remainder of her days. To stand near the cross is to
stand in a place of reward.
As a believer, Jesus has given us responsibility
to take His place here on earth. John 20:21
tells us that, “As my Father has sent me, even
so, send I you.” You and I represent Jesus to
others. To acknowledge the cross, is to
acknowledge a place of responsibility. If you
and I have come to the cross, we have a huge
responsibility to love the Lord Jesus, to love
other believers, and to love others the same
way Jesus loved us. The cross is indeed a
place of responsibility.
Finally, we see John, the disciple who represents – A Place of Responsibility
For John, to be at the cross was to stand at a
place of responsibility. He, along with the
other disciples, had forsaken Jesus and fled
for his life in the garden of Gethsemane. But
now, John has come back and is standing
near the cross. He was forgiven and restored.
Near the cross is where we find such forgiveness and restoration. Jesus not only restores John but He gives John an important
responsibility. “John, you are going to take
my place. You will be My substitute on earth,
“Jesus keep me near the cross” is more than a
song but where our Lord wants us to be. For
it is near the cross we find a place of redemption, rebuke, reward, and responsibility.
Until next time,

The month of May gives us
so much to celebrate. We have
Mother's Day, Memorial Day,
Armed Forces Day, and of
course don't forget the Kentucky Derby! It is a month of
transition. We are already over
a month into spring, and the
"dog days" of summer are still
a few weeks away. And if transition finds you considering first time home ownership, or even moving to a larger residence, now is a
crucial time to take action. Experts agree that the
best time for home buying and sales is the spring/
summer season. And that's where we now find ourselves. Real estate financing rates are low and home
prices are even comparably lower in contrast to just a
few years ago. The prospect for the future strongly
suggests that both rates and prices are on the verge of
a substantial increase.
Your reason for "sitting on the fence" may be a
sense of being overwhelmed by all of the legal
"mumble jumble." Title companies are only allowed
to put legal documents in front of you and ask you to
sign them. An attorney at law certified and trained
by the bar is licensed to explain your rights and responsibilities arising out of a closing. Professional
competent, experienced legal help is available. Eric
Moody and Associates has been assisting clients in
real estate matters for over three decades. They
guide dozens of clients each month through complicated issues in a way that builds confidence and resolve about legal decisions.
Best of all, a lot of the advice is free. You can hear
some valuable legal advice this month by tuning in
for "Hampton Roads Weekly" when Attorney Eric
Moody and his law partner, Attorney Lori Butts
give legal advice on the radio. Their next appearance will be on May 17 at 7 a.m. on WKUS, 92.1
FM, and replayed on 102.9 FM, 105.3 FM, and
107.7 FM on Sunday, May 18 at 7:00 a.m. He has
over thirty-seven years of experience as a lawyer
and he has even served as a judge. The law firm's
web site is at http://www.eomoodylaw.com/

Also, Hampton University features Mr. Moody in a
program on their campus radio station, WHOV 88.1

A Tribute To A Special Mother
teacher immediately
took the injured child
to the nurse. The only
one who was calm
was the student who
had caused the injury.
Upon her return, the
teacher placed the student in a corner. He
kicked the chair…the
wall…he taunted other
students,
and
the
teacher soon asked
Deborah to sit near the
child. “All the while,
I prayed that the Lord
would not allow him to kick me.” At her new
“station,” she noticed him smiling at her. She smiled
back and decided to converse with him. She asked him
a few questions and he answered each one. She then
encouraged him to do what was right—to behave
himself, and much to her delight, he responded positively. “Thank You, Jesus!” she
said. Naturally, the teacher noticed the
change and wanted to know what her
young volunteer had done. “I talked
to him instead of talking at him,”
was her response.
In 1980, she enrolled at Norfolk State University with Early
Childhood Education as a major. She began working at a
day care center and had such
success with the children—30
of them—that a parent asked
her to teach her own two children privately—for the same
salary! What a blessing this
was! By now, Evangelist Jennings was married to Elder Ray
Jennings –they had two children of
their own (Curtis and Ray, Jr.) and
she would be able to stay in her home
and teach.
She knew that God was ordering her
steps—even as the family purchased a home
that, unbeknownst to them was in disrepair; then there
was another home; then the opportunity to participate
in the Chesapeake Foster Care Program.
A four-year-old child with many problems was the
first foster child in the Jennings household. Evangelist
Jennings poured her heart into that little girl and before
Whether she is referred to as a foster
mother, step-mother,
god-mother, mother-in
-law, or just mom or
momma,
Evangelist
Deborah Jennings is
truly a mother among
mothers: She is one
who gives love, support, encouragement,
correction, and laughter to everyone who
crosses her path.
As a six-year-old elementary school student, Deborah Woodhouse Jennings starred in her first performance. She was the mother in “The Old Lady Who
Lived In A Shoe.” She recalls watching the children
running around—yes, playing their parts—and thinking that they need to be taught how to sit down—just
the way that her mom had taught her…
Over the years, mothering children and
teaching them has been very important
to Evangelist Jennings. She watched
how her parents, Elder Thomas and
Dr. Mary Woodhouse, opened
their doors to those who needed
help. They also took care of a
seven-day-old baby boy who
was nurtured and cared for until he became a teenager and
his family wanted him back.
This was a difficult time for
Deborah—seeing her brother
move away after so many
years. She could not understand how her mother could
just let him go. When her
mother gave her an explanation,
“it just made me love her more.”
Many children would be lovingly welcomed into the Woodhouse home and all were treated as
though they were a part of the family.
Watching her parents show such unconditional love to so many youngsters made it
easy for Evangelist Jennings to begin her own journey
along this same road…
As a teenager, she began volunteering at a school
for children with problematic behavior. On one occasion, she saw a student stab another student in the head
with a pencil. The class was in an uproar and the
12
she returned to her family, she had become quite a little
lady.
Just as God directed Abraham in the Bible, He sent
the Jennings’ to Atlanta, Georgia with no job and no
house, just by faith. But He provided a townhouse, and
before long, the family was welcoming a “hard-toplace” child—a girl with medical problems that included a tumor on her leg, into their home. Throughout her
life she had been teased and had low self-esteem. It was
the love in the Jennings house hold that turned things
around. While she was with them, her self-esteem skyrocketed, her grades improved to A’s and B’s in school,
and she began singing at church (founded by Elder Jennings, New Life Holiness Church). Even though she
loved being with the Jennings family, she still was interested in her natural family. As she was praying one
night, she asked God to bring them back into her life
and she was assured by Evangelist Jennings that God
does hear and answer prayer. The day that her family
walked into the church was indeed a happy one. Not
only was she reunited with her family, but her mom
learned about God’s love while fellowshipping at the
church.
She’s Embarking on a
New Career!
Congratulations to Terese Benn, the

with Verizon! This is
quite an exciting time for
Therese, especially since she will be relocating to
Richmond, Virginia to begin her new
job in a few days. A 2013 graduate of
Old Dominion University (B.S., Business Administration with a major in Finance), Terese is a member of First
Baptist Church, Berkley.
Congratulations, and may God continue to bless you in your endeavors!
Evangelist Jennings and her husband had an opportunity to impact many such lives during their 26
years as a foster parent. Just last year, though, her
beloved spouse passed away and she still finds herself reaching out to children in need!
As she reaches out, her first task is to teach the
children that dreams do come true. So many have
been hurt for so long and have stopped dreaming.
But Evangelist Jennings encourages them to set new
goals and dream again. She reminds them that people will always talk about you. She has had some to
steal, lie, and mistreat her, but God’s love is greater
than all of that. She says, “So count it all joy because God loves you; God sees all, knows all, and
cares about us all.” Her desire is to get a five-to-six
bedroom house paid in full and fill it up with children that need love, guidance, encouragement, support, and a mother’s love, because dreams really do
come true!
May God bless you, Evangelist Jennings!

hearts and come to the rescue of our African American Children. If you have been reading the newspapers, if you have been listening
to teachers of all races, if you have been looking at the test scores of schools where we are
the majority, then you know how distressing the
signs are. Last month the Education Department’s civil rights arm found the following:
while we represent 18 percent of children enrolled in preschool program, almost half of students suspended more than once are our children. Unacceptable! We see that black students of all ages are suspended and expelled at a
rate three times higher than that of other races;
our girls are suspended at higher rates than girls
of any other race or most boys. Is discipline
being applied more stringently to our children?
Are we remiss/unaware of child-rearing practices in our community? Have we in the faith
community done all that we can do to lessen the
disparities?
I submit that a number of things may contribute to the problem including families in disarray, inadequate economic and social services
and growing technology which, in a number of
instances, adds to unmet needs and misbehavior. The school cannot do everything; they
must educate. Teachers cannot teach if one or
more students in a classroom constantly needs
special attention not to mention the distraction
for other learners. I do not know all the answers but there are a few things I do know. We

A fresh bulb of garlic.
Don’t have any in your
kitchen right now? You
should. Here’s why…garlic
is loaded with sulfur, a mineral that helps rid the body
of toxins. Garlic has also
been shown to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride
levels. Garlic has been used in the treatment of
high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and bacteriarelated illnesses. Keep in mind, heating destroys
many of the beneficial properties of garlic. If you
can't stomach raw garlic, you can find it in capsule
form in most grocery or health food stores.
---Brenda Simpson, MHA, MPH
Last month, we continued our series on how to minimize the effects of toxins in our bodies through
"detoxification." In this month’s issue we will continue
our series. We mentioned that detoxifying the liver is
the first order of business on the road to a healthier
YOU!
Basically, detoxification is done by removing impurities from the blood. The liver is the main line of defense
where toxins are processed for elimination. How do you
detoxify your liver? These processes can get complicated but here are some nutritious ways to help your liver.
According to Traci D Mitchell, “Here are 10 foods that
detox your body and cleanse your liver. Think of your
liver as an air filter. All the toxins we eat, drink and
breathe in get clogged up in this hard-working organ.
Even though our body has its own natural detoxification
system, there is a lot we can do to give it a helping hand,
largely by eating the right kinds of foods.
Most of the foods contain a special protein called glutathione. Glutathione handcuffs toxins and drags them
out of our body…quite effectively. Here's the catch: this
handcuffing process works best when foods are eaten
raw. In fact, all of the foods listed here go from being a
great source of glutathione to not containing any at all
when they're cooked. Food for thought.
If your body needs to get the yuck out, add Brussels
sprouts to your diet today. Brussels sprouts are high in sulfur,
which helps to remove toxins
from the blood. Eating a serving
or two of Brussels sprouts daily
will help sponge out toxins –
whether they’re environmental
or dietary—these little sprouts
also boost glucosinolate, an antioxidant that forces the liver to release enzymes that
block damage.
16
Yes, that's a dandelion.
While I don't recommend
pesticide,
fertilizercovered weeds to anyone,
store-bought varieties are
perfectly safe. If you can't
find dandelion leaves in
your grocery store, opt for
dandelion root tea instead. Dandelion root tea has
been shown to rid the liver of toxins. Since our
liver is responsible for breaking down fats, producing amino acids and generally filtering the
gunk out – we need to take care of it. Keep in
mind that dandelion root tea has a fairly bitter
taste.
Carrots are another food
rich in glutathione, a protein
that helps detoxify the liver.
In addition to the detox
properties, carrots contain
good amounts of vitamin C, B6 and potassium.
They also loaded with vitamin A and K, too! It's
best to eat these raw.
Raw tomatoes do a great
job detoxifying the liver,
containing 169 milligrams of
glutathione per serving. The
benefits don't stop there. Tomatoes are famous for their
lycopene content, which has
been shown to protect against breast, skin and lung
cancer. Eat tomatoes when they're fresh. Try with
a little balsamic vinegar and sea salt.
Grapefruit contains just
over 70 milligrams of liver
cleansing glutathione. Grapefruits also contain a special
kind of pectin that has been
shown to lower cholesterol
like no other pectin-containing food.
Popeye's favorite, spinach, contains a
whopping 166 milligrams of glutathione
per serving when eaten raw. Cook it, and it
all goes away. Spinach also contains twice
as much energy-boosting iron as other
leafy greens. Spinach has also gained a lot
of attention as a cancer-fighter, too. Try a
spinach salad today with a little olive oil and sea salt drizzled on top.
Walnuts detoxify the liver and feed
the brain! A good source of glutathione
and a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, a little bit of walnuts go a long way.
Why not sprinkle a few on your next
spinach salad?
Avocados are another fruit rich in
glutathione. This green goddess is
also a good source of monounsaturated fats and has been shown to lower
cholesterol levels when eaten regularly.
In addition to being great for the liver, asparagus is a great vegetable to eat
raw when you're feeling bloated. Asparagus is a natural diuretic.
There are plenty of ways to detox

your body without dieting. My advice is to incorporate moderate, but regular amounts of these
foods in your diet on a regular basis. Along with
plenty of fresh water, your liver will be loving
you in no time. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to ease
off the sugar, alcohol and processed foods - as
they're all known ‘liver-cloggers.’”

JESUS CHRIST IS THE WAY
“Living right” is not just about being good and doing good...It is about accepting Christ and His Plan of Salvation. If you want to know Him, it ‘s
as easy as A, B, C…
Acknowledge that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior
“All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, paid the price for your sins when He gave His life on
the cross and God raised Him from the dead
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish,
but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
Confess your sins by surrendering your life to Jesus, seeking His forgiveness, and turning away from a life of sin
"For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."
(Romans 10:10)
To grow in Christ, become united with a Bible-believing church where you can let down your spiritual roots. Talk to God through prayer; listen
to His voice as you read His Word; spread His Word by telling others about Him.
