The Amazing Cork Story
Only nature could create the amazing and unique cork oak tree, Quercus suber. Unlike other oak
trees, the cork oak tree is an evergreen native to the Mediterranean Sea region. While the bark
of most trees is essential to the tree’s survival, the bark of the cork oak tree is only a protective
covering and can be removed without causing harm to the tree. The cork tree’s life span is 150250 years, of which about 100 years offer good quality cork. The bark (cork) regenerates and is
harvested every 7-9 years, improving in quality and quantity as the tree matures.
After the bark has been removed using a simple axe, it is dried and boiled. The pieces of bark
are then drilled for wine stoppers or “corks”. The bark waste from drilling the wine stoppers is
ground up and used to make cork flooring. This ground up cork is put into molds and is baked at
varying times and temperatures, offering natural shades from Light to Medium to Dark. Shade
variations are an inherent characteristic of cork and Medium has the largest range of shade
variations of all colors/patterns. Attention to blending shades is necessary when installing cork
tiles or planks.
Due to the unique properties of cork cell structure, which are bonded together by a strong natural
resinous substance, little additional resin is needed to hold cork together. Cork is natural and
comes from a renewable resource; at Capri we use low or no VOC adhesive and finishes to
further enhance the cork green story. Cork from Capri comes pre-finished with three coats of
commercial grade water-based polyurethane and water-based adhesive is used to install cork.
Maintaining cork requires regular sweeping or vacuuming and damp mopping with neutral floor
cleaner. Well-maintained cork floors can last decades. An aged cork floor develops a beautiful
“patina” only nature could create.

Mediterra Small Strips 6” x 24” planks
Cork Characteristics: Manufacturing of cork flooring dates back to the early 1900s; many cork floors installed in the 1920s
and 1930s are still viable, beautiful floors today. An aged cork floor develops a “patina” only nature can create. Cork, like all
wood products, has natural shade variations from tile to tile and plank to plank. Attention to blending shades when installing is
necessary. Cork has the ability to “bounce” back when compressed; however if too much pressure is exerted in too small an
area (i.e. high heels, spikes or improper furniture footings), denting can occur. Proper furniture glides/footings and chair mats/
pads under casters are necessary. While cork is resistant to liquid penetration, as with other woods, liquid should not be poured
on cork or left standing on cork. UV rays will fade wood floors including cork. All cork patterns (including hand-laid lines) are
random and not intended to match or line up. Maintenance includes regular sweeping/vacuuming and cleaning with a damp mop
and neutral floor cleaner. All Mediterra documents are available in the document library on the Capri website.

The Mediterra Rigato Collection offers hand-crafted, homogeneous cork tiles
with stripe variations. Rigato, which means “pinstripe” in English, is created
by skilled Italian artisans who hand lay homogeneous strips of cork together.
These beautifully crafted cork tiles offer subtle natural variations which can
be used alone or with other Mediterra cork patterns. The lines in Rigato are
randomly placed and not intended to match or line up.

applications of additional polyurethane. Veneer cork cannot be sanded.
