Girlfriends Newsletter
Summer 2016
Lit-N-Latte- Betty Hayes
Summer was a great time to relax with a good book or two! Ladies who love reading will really enjoy a wonderful group of women that meet every third Monday at 7:00 in the Fireside Room. All
ladies of SPPC and friends are invited to join us and we always have a few surprises! By the end of
this summer three books were discussed.-A Dog’s Journey, The Rosie Project and The Nightingale.
The review of September’s selection, Mrs. Sinclair’s Suitcase, can be found in the Winter & Spring edition of the
Girlfriends Newsletter. October & November’s books are the following selections:
The Bullet by Mary Louise Kelly
Two words: The bullet. That’s all it takes to shatter her life.
Caroline Cashion is a beautiful, intelligent professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she’s
known is proved to be a lie.
A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It
makes no sense: she has never been shot. She has no entry wound. No scar. Then, over the course of one awful
evening, she learns the truth: that she was adopted when she was three years old, after her real parents were
murdered. Caroline was there the night they were attacked. She was wounded too, a gunshot to the neck. Surgeons had stitched up the traumatized little girl, with the bullet still there, nestled too deep among vital nerves and blood vessels to remove. That was thirty-four years ago.
Now, Caroline has to find the truth of her past. Why were her parents killed? Why is she still alive? She returns to her
hometown and she meets a cop who lets slip that the bullet in her neck is the same bullet that killed her mother. Full-metal
jacket, .38 Special. It hit Caroline’s mother and kept going, hurtling through the mother’s chest and into the child hiding behind
her.
She is horrified—and in danger! When a gun is fired it leaves markings on the bullet. Tiny grooves, almost as unique as fingerprints. The bullet in her neck could finger a murderer. A frantic race is set in motion: Can Caroline unravel the
clues to her past, before the killer tracks her down?
The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin
On a stormy winter night, two strangers wait for a flight at the Salt Lake City airport. Ashley Knox is an attractive, successful writer, who is flying East for her much anticipated wedding. Dr. Ben Payne has just wrapped up
a medical conference and is also eager to get back East for a slate of surgeries he has scheduled for the following day. When the last outgoing flight is cancelled due to a broken de-icer and a forthcoming storm, Ben finds
a charter plane that can take him around the storm and drop him in Denver to catch a connection. And when the pilot says
the single engine prop plane can fit one more, if barely, Ben offers the seat to Ashley knowing that she needs to get back just as
urgently. And then the unthinkable happens. The pilot has a heart attack mid-flight and the plane crashes into the High Uintas
Wilderness-- one of the largest stretches of harsh and remote land in the United States.
Ben, who has broken ribs and Ashley, who suffers a terrible leg fracture, along with the pilot's dog, are faced with an incredibly
harrowing battle to survive. Fortunately, Ben is a medical professional and avid climber (and in a lucky break, has his gear from
a climb earlier in the week). With little hope for rescue, he must nurse Ashley back to health and figure out how they are going
to get off the mountain, where the temperature hovers in the teens. Meanwhile, Ashley soon realizes that the very private
Ben has some serious emotional wounds to heal as well. He explains to Ashley that he is separated from his beloved wife, but
in a long standing tradition, he faithfully records messages for her on his voice recorder reflecting on their love affair. As Ashley
eavesdrops on Ben's tender words to his estranged wife she comes to fear that when it comes to her own love story, she's just
settling. And what's more: she begins to realize that the man she is really attracted to, the man she may love, is Ben.

Kay Kelly and Kay Westerfield did an excellent job with the selection of Silo Restaurant and hosting this event. This is
an outstanding restaurant with delicious food and a beautiful eating environment. This is the first of three luncheons
that are planned for the Girlfriends to get together to enjoy food and friendship! Charlotte Noll welcomed this large
group and announced a few upcoming events that are scheduled for 2016-2017. Charlotte will be the new Leadership Coordinator for Girlfriends.
Lunch Bunch/Mary Martha Summer Luncheon-The Bread Box
Tucked away inside Artisan Alley is a new restaurant called The Bread Box. Everything
is baked on-site, from scratch, everyday. Elizabeth Wright organized and hosted this
event. Sixteen Girlfriends attended and there were conversations about summer trips
and up-coming Girlfriends’ activities. Everyone had a great time!
After lunch many of the ladies went shopping in some of the shops in Artisan Alley.
This is a great little place to simply enjoy discovering hidden treasures. The shops are
varied and each are unique.
Lunch Bunch/Mary Martha Summer Luncheon- El Mirasol
Since 1979 the Calvillo family has served San Antonio the most authentic and original Mexican dishes in the city. El Mirasol at Alon opened in
March 2016 and is located at 10003 NW Military Hwy. The interior is
modern with a purple triangle designed wall that is eye catching. Kay
Kelly and Kay Westerfield were the hostess and 26 Girlfriends attended.
Girlfriends caught up on vacations, summer movies, cruises, grandkids
and meeting new Girlfriends that attended for the first time. Un gran
tiempo se había por todos los que asistieron!
Sassy Scrapers- Libby Fleming
Sassy Scrapers got inspired at Stamp Camp. Carolyn Dick
was the teacher and a good friend. The Stamp Camp met
on August 12th at Carolyn’s home. We had fun using some
new products. I will enjoy sending and using the new techniques for future cards.
Mary Martha Circle- Janet Osterloh
September 27th at 10:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room is the first session for a small group
Bible study, God Heard Their Cry, for the ladies of Mary Martha. Noted teacher and historian, Ray Vander Laan, leads this video series which was filmed on location in Egypt and
the Red Sea. In this volume, Ray Vander Laan writes how God answered the cry of the
Israelites as they were persecuted in Egypt, and made himself known to both them and
their oppressors. Ray Vander Laan illustrates how, in ancient times, nothing was bigger
than Egypt: powerful pharaohs, strong armies, and a multitude of gods. God's people
were no match against the Egyptians. We will discover how God answers the cry of his
persecuted people and proclaims himself Lord to them and their oppressors. Ray Vander
Laan promises to assist us in “finding freedom in the midst of life’s trials”. All are invited
to join us the 4th Tuesday of each month in the Fireside Room for this amazing journey. Please contact Charlotte Noll (210-317-2284), Lynne Hodges 210-862-6343) or Janet Osterloh (210-722-3012) for more information.
Whimsical Party Platform Party- Charlotte Randolph
"A Whimsical Party Platform Party" will be our Girlfriends
Fall Fling this year. Come meet with friends on Saturday,
October 1st, at 11:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. When you
find a table, you will create your own party name for that
table, and then decorate it with some of the materials
supplied. Judging and prizes will follow before lunch. Sign
-up sheets will be in the Narthex during September.
$15.00 or $20.00 at the door.
Community Bible Study- Charlotte Noll
In addition to our regular Girlfriends activities, you might
want to consider Community Bible Study. CBS is a wonderful way to not only meet like minded friends but the opportunity to study one of the great books of the Bible. Matthew is the book that will be studied this year. CBS meets every Thursday morning from 10:30 to 12:30
from September-May and we are fortunate that it meets at SPPC! Check it out. It's not too late to register.
