Get Wakefield Moving outlines the
recommended amount of time we should be
active every day.
Staying fit and well is a moving experience
- the more we move the fitter, healthier and
happier we will be.
Modern life where we travel by car, sit at
desks for work or school, watch TV, use
social media and play computer games often
means we do not move enough each day.
But here’s the good news! By making some
small changes to your daily routine you can
take big steps towards a healthy and active
life.
Hopefully within this booklet you will find
something to inspire you to be more active;
perhaps getting back into an activity you
used to love or maybe trying something new.

Taking exercise is something we all know we should
do more of but for many of us it is something we
dread. Here are my three top tips to help you exercise
more.
Firstly, being physically more active should be fun. The
most important thing is to find something you enjoy
doing. This booklet will help you do that. There is a
wealth of ways in which you can exercise in Wakefield
district and much of it is free.
Exercising is something that is good for you regardless
of what age you are. You are never too old or too
young. For children exercise will help them burn of all
the energy they have and will help them sleep better,
study better and feel better about themselves. For
adults being more physically active will lift your mood,
help with achieving a healthy weight and prevent
many of the nasty diseases we’d all rather avoid. For
older adults taking exercise will help maintain your
independence and provides opportunities to meet
people.
My second top tip, after picking something you enjoy
doing, is to build being more physically active into
your daily routine. If it requires a lot of organisation
it won’t happen. Why not walk or cycle part or all
of the way to school or work? Sign up to a weekly
class or group activity, like the really popular Health
Walks you’ll find in this booklet. Or perhaps get into
gardening?
My final tip is to do this with friends or family. There
are evenings when we’d rather stay in and watch TV,
but if friends are expecting us we’ll make the effort
and go out. Many of the group activities suggested in
this booklet will introduce you to new friends who will
look forward to meeting you again at the next session.
But above all, to steal an advertising slogan, just do it.
You won’t regret it.

The circuit class is something I really enjoy. I used to dread having to do any
exercise but this is a really fun and social group; I actually miss it when I can’t
attend for whatever reason! All the instructors are so helpful and friendly. They
motivate me to keep going and give everyone different exercise options. The
group has helped not only with my weight loss but it has improved my fitness,
overall health and my confidence too!

Wakefield Thornes parkrun, like every other one in the UK, is about so much
more than a free, weekly, timed 5km run. It’s about friendships, families and
bringing people together to help one-another achieve sustainable and healthy
lifestyle changes. Runners of all abilities are welcome, and the focus is on
recreational running and increasing participation. With that in mind, results
are presented in time order, but there are no performance-related prizes or
medals and the first person across the line is termed the first finisher not the
winner.

Health Walks
Walking not only keeps me, slim, sane and ship-shape, but I see much more
when I’m outside. I have time to stand and stare and you will be very
surprised at what you find. When I take my group on a walk, I notice a
difference in them when they come back, they all return rosie-cheeked,
animated and laughing. It’s a very pleasant sight.

Wakefield Health Walks are regular, short walks that last
between 20 minutes to 90 minutes and are aimed at
people of all abilities and fitness levels. Each walk
is led by at least one trained walk leader as part
of the National Walking for Health scheme.

The walks are free, and there is no need to
book. You don’t need any fancy walking gear,
just sensible footwear and clothing suited to
the weather conditions. We have over 20 walks
around the district. If there isn’t a walk near
you, why not set up your own and training will be
provided.

Nordic Walking
Nordic Walking is a suitable, effective and an
enjoyable fitness session for all ages and
abilities.
Using the poles, you can tone the upper and
lower body at the same time and burn nearly
twice as many calories than ordinary walking.

It is a great exercise for improving your posture
and balance - it is ideal for neck, shoulder and
back problems and also reduces the pressure on
knees and hips through the support of the poles.
Nordic walking can be done anywhere - no need for
hills, country paths or even snow!
All sessions are every sociable and walking
outdoors has been proven to boost mood.
Walks currently @ Thornes Park, Castleford Pool, Pugneys Country park and
Nostell Priory - Tuesdays 10am.

The Health Rides are delivered by Wakefield District
Cycle Forum that is a voluntary organisation that aims
to promote and campaign for better facilities for cyclists
within the Wakefield District. The rides are delivered at
various venues across the Wakefield District and are led
by the groups trained volunteers. The Health Rides are
for all ages and abilities. They last approximately 2-3
hours, cycling a distance of 5 to 10 miles on traffic free
routes and some quiet roads.
