Hightower Margaret Young To Whom This May Concern, Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin. People with dyslexia have average or above-average intelligence, but their struggle to read single words impacts both their comprehension and their writing abilities. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability. The International Dyslexia Association estimates at least 1 in 10 people is dyslexic, which translates into 5.5 million students in America’s schools who are struggling to read. There is a solution. For 34 years Neuhaus Education Center has used evidence-based strategies to train dyslexia therapists, enhance classroom teachers’ knowledge of literacy instruction, offer information and resources to families, and provide direct services to adult learners. None of this would be possible without the support of our community. We invite you to join us as an underwriter for the Neuhaus 2015 Annual Benefit Luncheon on Wednesday, February 18, 2015, to support us in our mission. We know our method of structured literacy instruction works. Our challenge is to meet the need of all learners. In the past 34 years we have provided professional development to more than 70,000 teachers. Our reach is impressive, but the need is greater. Together we can unmask reading disabilities. This spring Neuhaus will again host its largest fundraising event of the year at the Bayou City Event Center. All proceeds will be used for teacher professional development using evidence-based methods of literacy instruction. We are also pleased to announce this year’s keynote speaker; Dr. David Eagleman, neuroscientist and New York Times bestselling author of Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain. This book offers a compelling insight into the brain from one of the leading luminaries in neuroscience. On Thursday, February 19, 2015, Neuhaus will host the Lenox M. Reed Seminar at the Junior League of Houston. Our speaker this year is Dr. Eric Tridas, past-president of the International Dyslexia Association and medical director of The Tridas Center for Child Development. His discussion, “The Perfect Storm – Inattention, Dyslexia, and Anxiety,” will address the impact inattention and anxiety may have on different neurodevelopmental functions that can affect decoding, fluency, and comprehension. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ashley Culton at Neuhaus; she may be reached at 713.664.7676 x 266 or [email protected]. All underwriting responses received by December 6, 2014, will be listed in the luncheon invitation. Please plan to be a part of this exciting event—we would be honored to have your support!
