2013 Annual Report - National Ability Center
Discover The Possibilities T: 435-649-3991 F: 435-658-3992 www.discovernac.org [email protected] 1000 Ability Way Park City, Utah 84060 December 16, 2013 Dear Friend, For 28 years, the mission of the National Ability Center has focused on the discovery of unique ABILITIES within each and every person. We’re thinking BIG as we look toward the future of the National Ability Center and I invite you to be a part of it. In college I was fortunate to have a mentor who changed my life. Dr. James Graaskamp was determined to not be defined by his disability. He saw within himself, within me and within everyone he met a potential for greatness. He shared a world of opportunity made possible when you simply choose to focus on your strengths, not your limitations. At the National Ability Center, that philosophy can be seen in action every day. Our mission demonstrates that success in sports and recreation positively impacts every part of life. Your generosity has carried us a long way since 1985. Our BIG ideas continue to need your support. From expanding training and education resources for organizations and communities around the world ... to connecting families with the most innovative adaptive equipment ... to supporting more than 20 international athletes to GO FOR THE GOLD at the 2014 International Paralympics Games we need your help. I am tremendously grateful for the support from individual donors and community partners. You enable us to provide the highest quality programs to our participants. The growing needs of veterans, a world of people living longer with more complicated health challenges and increases in diagnosis of major diseases like autism, cancer and diabetes have challenged our resources. But with you I know we are STRONG. Please consider increasing your annual gift by 10 or 15% to help us meet the growing demand of our community. DISC OVE R Your support is a vote of confidence in our mission and your help is vital in our ABILITY to make a difference in the lives of the many thousands we reach and the many more they lead, inspire and transform. THE Sincerely, Chuck Heath National Ability Center POSSIBILITIES A N N U A L R E P O R T 2 012 2 013 DISCOVER EXPAND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & 2013 BOARD PRESIDENT – Rising to the Challenge and Embracing Personal Growth you for granting me a scholarship in the National Ability Center’s Equine Facilitated “ Thank Learning program. Working with the horses helped me become more aware of my own thoughts and feelings and gave me the ability to better express those feelings to others. By challenging myself, I am more motivated to make positive changes in my health and well-being and now know that, if I take care of myself, my self-esteem can grow and that anything is possible. ” – Michelle Smith Thank you for your generous support of the National Ability Center, its programs and participants over the past year. At the National Ability Center, we are fortunate to have individuals like Michelle who set an example for each of us to challenge ourselves, try new things and embrace growth and change as part of an ongoing life process. In the past year, the National Ability Center had one of the most aggressive expansion periods in our 28 year history – reaching our five year goal for growth in individual participants in just one year and expanding our services and support by more than 30% since 2010. The rapid increase in the population of individuals with disabilities combined with a greater awareness of the value of diversity and focus on individual abilities is driving the National Ability Center’s expansion of programs and services. Throughout the year, the Board and staff worked together to make important strategic decisions in all areas of our organization. From solidifying our financial base through our reserve funding and endowment investments, to the acquisition of state-of-the-art equipment, improved facilities and an increased focus on the training and education – we continue to build a solid foundation. While these organizational accomplishments deserve celebration, they cannot compare to the challenges and successes of the more than 3,000 individuals that we worked with last year. For Tim who took his first steps, for Lisa who cried when her daughter did ‘the impossible’ and for Joe who saw the light and his family past the darkness of PTSD, we say, “thank you.” Your support directly translates into stronger individuals, stronger families and stronger communities. Please know you have a standing invitation to see the transformative power that your achievements and efforts create each day at our center. Sincerely, Gail Loveland Executive Director 6/2010-present Hans Fuegi Board President 9/2012-8/2013 HIGHLIGHTS ACHIEVE • Honored our nation’s service members through service; 47 military groups and more than 900 active duty service members, veterans and their families participated in our programs this past year. • Collaborated with 64 unique groups in on-site programming including new partners, Daniels Academy, International Rett Syndrome Foundation and the Women’s Wounded Warrior Project Alumni Summit. • Educated over 1,000 staff, volunteers, partners and community members in adaptive programs, techniques and ability awareness through over 150 trainings. • Engaged 30 interns, including 5 teens with disabilities through newly established COACH program, teaching, learning and leading roles within the organization. • Achieved a Summit Challenge six year goal - 1 in every 5 cyclist was an adaptive rider, equal to national disability rates. • Supported 24 Snowboard (6 made the first-ever US Paralympic National Snowboard Team), 15 Alpine, 17 Nordic and 10 Special Olympics athletes in pursuing dreams to compete at the highest level of international competition. • Created thousands of custom solutions for hundreds of unique abilities through the combination of innovative equipment, expertise and duct tape. • Provided 18,300 recreational and competitive lessons within 18 sports and recreational activities and over 335 days of programming. 2011-2012 2 012 - 2 013 R E V E N U E ASSETS Current Assets $2,492,591 $1,341,683 Land, Buildings and Equipment, Net $4,107,681 $3,968,136 Long-Term Assets $27,947 $25,097 $6,628,219 $5,334,916 LIABILITIES Current Liabilities $477,753 $346,778 Long-Term Debt $1,212 $8,039 $478,965 $354,817 ENDOWMENT*$2,501,530 $2,330,741 NET ASSETS$8,900,784 $7,310,840 STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES Revenues and Other Support Contributions $2,061,304 $397,072 Program Lodging $178,660 $148,475 Program Revenue $804,692 $644,749 Special Events (Net of Expenses) $878,630 $904,626 Grants $645,021 $486,340 Noncash (In Kind) Contributions $541,579 $492,657 Other Income $107,089 $27,737 $5,216,975 $3,101,655 Expenses Program Services $3,036,636 $2,280,930 Management and General $268,366 $242,761 Fundraising $221,765 $188,837 $3,526,767 $2,712,528 Increase in Unrestricted Net Assets $1,690,208 $389,127 Restricted Donations and Investment Income Return on Investments $95,677 $67,271 Endowment Campaign $151,038 Other Restricted Donations $46,135 $120,076 $141,812 $338,385 Other Expenses Depreciation $242,076 $228,778 Change in Net Assets $1,589,944 $498,734 Net Assets at Beginning of Year $7,310,839 $6,812,105 Net Assets at End of Year $8,900,783 $7,310,839 2 012 - 2 013 EXPENSES SE P TE MBER 1, 2012 – AUGUS T 31, 2 013 FIN AN CIAL S 2012-2013 Retu Prog Gran Prog Spec Cont Return on Invest Program Lodgin Grants 12% Program Revenu Return on Investments 2% Program Lodging 3% Return on Investments 2% Grants 12% Program Lodging 3% Program Revenue & Dues 17% Grants 12%Events (net) 17% Special Program Revenue & Dues 17% Contributions (cash & in-kind) 49% Special Events (net) 17% Contributions (cash & in-kind) 49% Special Events ( Contributions (ca Fu M P Fundraising 6 Management Program Serv Fundraising 6% Management & General 8% Fundraising 6% Program Services 84% Management & General 8% Program Services 84% 2012 – 2013 DON ORS 2 Good Legs Foundation Nadim & Maggie Abuhaidar Acorn Outfitters Michael & Ellen Adams Thomas D.
