MESSAGE FROM
COMMODORE WATSON
I am most excited to recognize the continuing partnership between Canadian Forces Morale and
Welfare Services and Mackenzie Tour - PGA TOUR Canada, as we collaborate in presenting the
2016 National Capital Open to Support Our Troops, a week-long celebration of professional golf,
entertainment and informative activities, raising funds and highlighting the challenges faced by
Canadian Armed Forces serving members, veterans and their families.
As the beneficiary of this event, the Support Our Troops Program provides a myriad of support and
services through its two principal funds: The Military Families Fund and the Soldier On Fund. The
former, meets the often unique and varied needs of military families, accruing from the conditions
of service, but not addressed by existing public support policies, whereas the latter seeks to help
members reintegrate into society following career and life-changing illness or injury, through personal
development activities and opportunities.
Corporate Canada, community organizations and individual Canadians can join in contributing to the
Support Our Troops Program through sponsorship, participation and/or attendance at the National
Capital Open to Support Our Troops, August 15th through the 21st at Hylands Golf Club, adjacent to
Ottawa International Airport. I look forward to seeing you there!
Yours Aye,
Commodore Mark B. Watson
Director General Morale and Welfare Services

SUPPORT
OUR TROOPS
The Support Our Troops Program is an internal charitable foundation that was established to meet the
needs of the Canadian Armed Forces Community, with particular emphasis on the unique and special
challenges that members, veterans and their families face, either directly or indirectly, as a result of
military service.
The Support Our Troops Program is funded completely through donations from individual Canadians
and Corporate Canada, contributions from external organizations and proceeds from internal and
third party events and from the sale of Yellow Ribbon merchandise.
The Yellow Ribbon is a highly visible symbol of the support of Canada and Canadians for the
Canadian Armed Forces. Trade-mark protection was introduced for the Yellow Ribbon in 2006.
Since 2009, the Support Our Troops Program has developed programs, activities and events, such
as the National Capital Open to Support Our Troops, which provide a diverse range of support, aid
and services to current and former military members and their families.
The inaugural National Capital Open to Support Our Troops, held in 2015, generated $75K for the
Support Our Troops Program. These funds were directed to the purchase of Hi-Low beds for veterans
that are residents of the Perley Rideau Veterans Health Centre, in Ottawa. Equally importantly, the
event:
•
•
•
•
Attracted more than 3,000 spectators;
Included the participation of 50 Pro-Am teams;
Was supported by 300 volunteers; and
Hosted 156 young professional golfers vying for a spot on the Web.Com Tour.
Across the country, Mackenzie Tour-PGA TOUR Canada events generated almost $600K in 2015
for local charitable activities and programs.
The financial objective for the 2016 National Capital Open to Support Our Troops is to donate
$100K to support veteran homelessness programs.
