Facts about KIDCO
importantly, with early childhood development
services for their children as they get ready for the
years of schooling.
History
In 1974, when Community Development Block Grant
funds were available to needy communities, the
Wynwood community residents organized a grassroots
effort to request funding to meet serious needs such as
child care, crime prevention, elderly care, employment,
training, and others. The Holy Cross Episcopal Church
provided use of their property for the child care
program, and second, they provided the matching
funds for the renovation of their facilities.
KIDCO II (Holy Cross Site) located at 123 NE 36th Street,
opened its doors to the children and families of the
community in May 23, 1976 with a license capacity of
60 children.
As a community-based organization, KIDCO has
continued to grow and therefore, meet the evergrowing early care and education needs of the
community.
Today, 31 years later, KIDCO is a
renowned agency in the community with four (4)
locations, central office, and serving 450 children of
which 360 are Head Start and 16 Early Head Start.
KIDCO Child Care, Inc. achieved becoming a Head Start
Delegate Agency in 1987 and originally served 80 Head
Start children.
License Capacity
KIDCO Child Care presently operates from four sites
with total license capacity of 450 children within the
Wynwood and neighboring communities. It serves
approximately 90% low and moderate-income families.
70% of these children come from single parent families,
primarily women who need to work in order to raise
their children.
Total Number of Employees: 83
Involvement
KIDCO is proud to keep up with today’s trends in early
childhood education by providing multiple services to
young children and their families. The administration
has over thirty-one (31) years of experience in the
early childhood education field. This reflects in their
work as they accomplish maximum utilization of the
allocated funding to provide the quality care and
education children and families deserve. In order to
accomplish this, the administration concentrates on
meeting all the necessary requirements and goals. The
following are few of these requirements:

Messages
Chairperson
I have been involved with
KIDCO since 1996, first as a
parent and then as a long
standing Board member. I
value this organization and
feel proud to be part of it.
President/CEO
Being the President/CEO
of KIDCO is a big
challenge, but one that I
take on proudly with the
support and enthusiasm
of our Board of Directors
and our Administrative
Team. These individuals
offer
unconditional
dedication, commitment,
and unlimited support to this organization.
Through the 31 years of serving the many communities
we touch, I have seen a marked difference I the last two
years, for they have represented a stepping stone in our
KIDCO history. First, thanks to the grants provided by
the City of Miami and matching monies granted by the
Midtown Miami Development group, we were able to
purchase the KIDCO IV facility in the Little Haiti area. In
addition we received 20 additional Head Start slots to
serve 60 children in that facility. The Grand Opening of
KIDCO IV on September 2005 was a fabulous
celebration for our children, parents, staff and all our
guests.
Second, our main accomplishment is to celebrate in
style KIDCO’s 30th Anniversary. This was a gala event
also supported by our friends from Midtown Miami and
one attended by so many of our long standing friends
and supporters such as our Board of Directors, KIDCO
employees, KIDCO friends and Dignitaries like County
Commissioner Audrey Edmonson who is always there
for the children and families we serve. Thirty years of
early care and education services is quite an
accomplishment and we are extremely proud of
reaching this milestone.
I have seen the growth of
KIDCO and the dedication its
employees have in order to
provide the quality services the children and families
deserve.
With its actions and accomplishments KIDCO’s
administration has demonstrated its leadership
ability to take this organization into the future.
This report serves only as a highlight of the many
activities and events KIDCO offers to the children,
families, employees and community at large.
Thank you,
Hugo Barrientos
Board Involvement
& Accomplishments
 Hugo Barrientos, our Board Chairperson,
participated in many activities such as:
1.

Finally, the summer of 2006 marked another step
towards enhancing quality and we received another
grant from the Early Learning Coalition of Dade and
Monroe Counties, for Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten
(VPK).
These are only three of the many goals KIDCO has
accomplished during the past two years. Many other
accomplishments are highlighted throughout this
report.
Sincerely,
Nilsa Velázquez-Martínez

Hands on Miami
The Early Learning Coalition (ELC) of Miami Dade and
Monroe selected our KIDCO I site to launch the new
VPK Campaign. This event took place on July 31, 2006
and it was attended by special guests such as Octavio
Verdeja, Chairman of the ELC Board and Gladys Wilson,
Director of Administration Workforce Innovations
(AWI). Ms. Wilson took time to honor us with
presentation of a plaque and read a story to a group of
our children.
In collaboration with the Hands on Miami volunteers
from different parts of Miami-Dade County worked
together and gave of their services and participated on
weekend projects at two of our KIDCO sites. They
painted a mural at KIDCO IV and at KIDCO I they
painted a mural and the classrooms with bright colors
and different designs in an effort to beautify the
environment in which the children play and work.
KIDCO I
Special Grant from Commissioner
Edmonson
We are thankful to Commissioner Audrey Edmonson
for awarding KIDCO $80,000 for Fiscal Year 06-07.
This grant was used to fulfill several of our most
pressing needs:
 Installed wood floors at KIDCO’s III and IV
 Completed outdoor repairs at our KIDCO I site
in the infant and toddler areas.
 Painted interior of classrooms and offices at
KIDCO I.

End of the Year Ceremonies
The End of the year ceremony was held for KIDCO I, II,
III at Eneida Harter Elementary School and KIDCO IV
was held at Edison Elementary School.
KRAFT “Salsa, Sabor y Salud” Project
For three years KIDCO had the opportunity to be part
of a national pilot program funded by KRAFT FOODS
looking into the eating habits, exercise and wellness
practices followed by typical Hispanic families.
This program provided funds for us to purchase foods
and make simple nutritional dishes with our Hispanic
families and involve them in easy and fun exercises and
ideas to improve their physical activity. The program
was filled with incentives for the families and it was a
huge success!

of society, therefore, making their communities a better
place to live”. KIDCO is fortunate to have such
dedicated team members.
Farewell
On September 15, 2006, a
gathering of over 500 friends
and family members attended
Ms. Ophelia Elizabeth BrownLawson’s retirement gala.
The theme was the Golden
Years of Rock & Roll and that
was exactly how the event
turned out.
Ms. BrownLawson was honored by
numerous City, County, State and National Dignitaries
with plaques and proclamations celebrating her years
of hard work in Miami Dade County.
Farewell…
The Hyatt Regency’s ballroom was beautifully
decorated as everyone was to expect. Ms. BrownLawson looked radiant on this special evening and left
a mark of gratitude in everyone who attended. This is
the mark that Ophelia placed upon us at KIDCO over 22
years ago by taking Nilsa Velázquez under her wings
and opening the doors to the Head Start program. Ms.
Brown-Lawson is the ultimate professional and fighter
for young children and families.
At our 2005 Annual Meeting Nilsa, Silvia, Rosa and
Ivette held back tears as they bid farewell to our former
Center Director, Julie Riverón-Bello. They were joined
by the members of the Board of Directors and guests
that were present in sharing accolades and memories
of Julie’s 15 year history with KIDCO. We all wished
her well in her new endeavors with her husband
George in Decatur, Texas, where they can breathe fresh
air and enjoy the outdoors with their horses.
Team KIDCO
However, we feel very happy that we were able to hold
on to Julie as an Independent Consultant working with
us with our NAEYC Accreditation process.

day to day operations of the agency. They are very
dedicated and committed to our mission: “To provide
quality early care and education services to children

services to families and a support system that will assist
families in their developing role as productive members
Page 14
The transition between Julie
Riverón-Bello
leaving
her
Center Director position for the
past fifteen (15) years could
have been a time of hardship
and tribulation. However as it
is often the case at KIDCO,
Ivette Riaño was promoted to
this position because of her
knowledge and leadership. The transition has been a
lot of work but Ivette has formed an even stronger
team with Rosa Casamor and she has carried out the
mission and vision of our agency with a great deal of
professionalism. Thank you Ivette for the endless
hours!
Ivette Riaño was elected to participate in the Head
Start/Early Head Start Staff Development Committee as
Vice Chair. The Committee’s goals were to establish a
teacher substitute plan, to implement a social service
internship program, and to organize the staff
recognition breakfast.
Ivette Riaño and Rosa Casamor have both been asked to
participate in the Transition Sub-Committee at Head
Start. This committee looks at transition and updating
the process used with children zero to five.
