General Manager’s Message
Warm greetings from all of us at CMC, your Association
managers! By now we have seen some snow and ice, but it
has been relatively mild and we hope it continues that way.
As we continue to deal with the wind, cold and potential
snow, its time for a quick reminder that on those snow/ice
days we ask that you don’t park on the roads. This enables
our snow/ice removal crews to quickly and safely clear
our roadways. Please also keep in mind that these crews
only begin to work when there is (2) inches of snow on
the ground. During that time they use a salt/sand mixture
which becomes most effective when the temperatures rise
above 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Please be aware that our
Facilities Engineers and I are constantly monitoring and
communicating with our vendor to ensure a timely cleaning
of our roadways. As in previous years, they do parking lots
and streets first, then cul-de-sacs, and finally pipe stems.
Driveway aprons are only plowed when the snow is six
inches or more. All residents are expected to take care of
their own sidewalks as he HOA only clears sidewalks in close
proximity to the community buildings. We also appreciate
the extra care and attention you as a community give when
driving throughout Heritage Hunt.
January was a busy month for bringing on new faces and
personalities to volunteer time in the governance and
activities related to the community. They are your newly
elected board and committee members. Ken Aitchison was
elected by the Board to be the Board President. For other
Board and committee positions please visit page 5. As I
attend most of the committee and all of the board meetings,
it was exciting to see all of them jump in and begin to work
on community activities and formulate their 2015 goals.
One of those goals, shared by many, is the completion
of the Clubhouse kitchen, dining room and lounge. With
construction well under way we are enthused and will
regularly share online the status of the renovation. To date
we have seen the removal of old carpet, equipment, and
furniture, some basic framing put in, and the installation
of our new refrigeration unit. A special thanks to the task
force and our contractors for their diligence as we prepare
to show case the “masterpiece” the first part of April. In the
interim, don’t forget to check out the new menu which is
being served at the Marsh Mansion Parlor. This new service
takes the place of your regular food and beverage service of
the Tavern and Virginian Dining Room.
Another project and opportunity for all of us is expressing
our concerns over the proposed power line routes from
Dominion Power. The Community Relations Committee has
organized a special Town Hall on March 4 from 7-9 PM in
the Mountain View Room with Supervisor Pete Candland
to discuss the status of the project. We encourage all to
attend - your voice makes a difference. One way we have
seen this happen is with Comcast agreeing to provide all
Heritage Hunt residents a rebate for the purchase of a backup battery for the Xfinity Voice Modem. The rebate form and
its details may be found on the community website and at
the Clubhouse Front Desk. There will be some retroactive
rebates made for those of you who have already purchased
the battery, so please review the website for details.
Lastly, as winter winds down over the next 4-6 weeks you
will see some new faces on property. Starting this month
we welcome our new landscape company, HLS, to Heritage
Hunt. We look forward to working with them this next year.
I wish you all the best during this cold winter season. Think
spring. The crack of the bat is just around the corner.

Conway Robinson Park Deer
Culling A Success
The managed hunt on the Conway Robinson State Forest was
a success again in 2014. In two days of hunting, 15 deer were
harvested which is the same number as in 2013. Hunters were
again dedicated to the objective of population reduction, and
did an excellent job of deer population management by
working hard to harvest 81% antlerless deer. A positive
response in tree regeneration and herbaceous growth has been
observed in the forest due to reducing the deer population. The
Department of Forestry is again happy with the results of the
hunt and the positive response in the forest.
Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) was found at the Conway in 2014.
EAB is a non-native invasive insect first identified in Detroit,
MI, and it’s spread to the mid-atlantic states. EAB attacks
all species of Ash trees, which have no natural defenses to it.
While the Ash component of the forest on the Conway is small,
many of the trees around the parking lot and pavilion are Ash.
The Ash trees around the parking lot will be cut as their health
declines over coming years due to EAB.
Other activities are planned for 2015 on the Conway Robinson
State Forest, including a prescribed burn in the understory of
the pine stand that was thinned in 2013. The prescribed burn
will improve wildlife habitat and help control hardwood competition. Trail maintenance will occur periodically throughout
the year.

Submission of Design Review
Applications
The HOA Board of Directors has approved the Architectural
Review Committee (ARC) changing its meeting day from the
2nd and 4th Friday of the month to the 2nd and 4th Wednesday
of the month. Typically, that would mean that Design Review
Applications would be due to the Covenants Administrator on
the Monday that is 9 days earlier than the meeting day.
However, owners need to be aware that beginning in
February 2015, the focus of ARC meetings will be to work
on its proposal for revision of the July 24, 2012 version of the
Design Guidelines. Therefore, owners should try to get their
applications submitted in time for review at the meeting
occurring on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Why is this being done? The Board has asked the ARC to
complete its review of the July 24, 2012 version of the Design
Guidelines and submit a comprehensive proposal for revision
as soon as practicable in 2015. The ARC meets for three hours
22 times each year. Our experience in 2014 was that review
and approval or disapproval of applications took up nearly all
of the three hours allotted to each meeting. Therefore, with the
approval of the Board, we voted at the January 14, 2015
beginning in February 2015 to focus the first 1-2 hours of the
second meeting each month to working on proposed revisions
to the 2012 Design Guidelines. That means that some
applications may not be heard at the meeting on the 4th
Wednesday of the month and may be carried over to the 2nd
Wednesday of the following month.
What is the point? Get your applications in early each month
so they can be approved / disapproved on the 2nd Wednesday
of the month. If there are emergencies – such as a leaking roof
– we will deal with them expeditiously.
Andy Johnson, ARC Chair
TIA and
Stroke: Do
you know
the signs and
what to do?
Did you know that 700,000
people suffer a stroke each
year. Five hundred thousand
of these strokes are first
occurrences, while the rest
are repeat strokes. That
equates to someone
experiencing a stroke every
45 seconds in the United States. On Tuesday, February 17, in
the Mountain View room, Dr. Ester Bahk, MD Internal
Medicine, will explain TIA and stroke and the signs and symptoms of both. In addition, she will discuss the latest diagnostic
and treatment options and what you should do if you think you
are having a TIA or stroke. A question and answer will follow
the discussion. This program is sponsored by the Community
Relations Committee.

What is cyber security?
Cyber security is general Internet safety, which includes
protection of anything connected to or accessible by the
internet- from networks themselves to the information stored in
computers. Technology has changed tremendously in the past
25 years, and it only continues to advance. The Internet has
brought us so many benefits; email, electronic messaging, and
personal websites allow us to stay connected, informed, and
involved with family and friends. It is interesting to note that
“Baby Boomers” embrace new technologies 20 times faster
than members of Gen Y, including social sites, podcasts, and
blogs. The Internet provides an easy way to shop, plan travel,
and manage finances. However, with these increased
conveniences comes increased risk.
Just like any other public environment, the Internet requires
awareness and caution. Just as you use locks to keep criminals
out of your home, you also need safeguards to secure your
computer. Many of the crimes that occur in real life are now
done - or at least facilitated - through the Internet. Theft, abuse,
and more can be and are being done online. Many scammers
target older Americans via emails and websites for charitable
donations, dating services, auctions, health care, and
prescription medications.
Below are some common sense rules from the real world that
apply in the online world.
• Don’t judge a book by its cover. Cyber criminals hide behind
the anonymity of the Internet. What you say and do online is
visible to others, and it’s not erasable. Don’t communicate or
reveal any personal information to strangers online. Personal
information includes your name, address, age, phone number,
birthday, email address, social security number, and insurance
policy numbers – even your doctor’s name.
• Look before you leap. Don’t enter contests, join clubs, or
share your personal information for any reason, unless you
know you are on a reputable website. Do not open attachments,
click links, or respond to email messages from unknown
senders or companies that ask for your personal information.
Most organizations – banks, charities, universities,
companies, etc. - don’t ask for your personal information over
email. Beware of requests to update or confirm your personal
information.
• All that glitters is not gold. Be wary of emails offering “free”
gifts, prizes, or vacations. These are tricks designed to get you
to give up personal information. Personal information can be
pieced together to steal identities, money, or credit.
• A chain is as strong as its weakest link. Once we understand
the dangers we face online, we need to tell other people who
might not be as cyber smart and savvy. Every Internet user, no
matter how young or old, is our Nation’s first line of defense
against people who might want to do harm. If we all become
more aware of who we talk to, what we say, and what we share
online we can all make a big difference.
Protecting Against Online Fraud
Be sure to remember these tips when navigating the internet to
avoid fraud:
• Seeking Medical Advice. When you go to any medicalrelated website, be sure to consider: How current is the
information? Check to see when the information was released.
The Heritage Horn • February 2015
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
Cyber Tips (continued)
Do not rely on a single website for information, consult a few
sources and be sure to check who exactly is providing the
information. Many pharmaceutical companies create websites
with information to sell products. Look for sites ending in .edu
(for education) or .gov (for government).
• Banking. When using online banking services, check to
be sure the sites you navigate are secure. One quick clue to
determine whether a website is safe is if the URL begins with
“https://.” When using a public computer–such as one at your
local library–avoid typing your personal information. Look for
the padlock icon at the bottom of your browser, which indicates the internet Website uses encryption. Additionally, type
website URLs directly into the address bar, do not follow links.
• Shopping. If you shop online, check your credit card statements as often as possible and use a credit card for online
purchases. Credit cards have some protections that debit cards
do not, such as the ability to question unusual charges.

The Future Residents Task Force will hold the spring Heritage
Hunt Golf & Country Club (HHG&CC) Community Open
House on Sunday, April 19, 2015, from Noon to 4 PM. As
you may (or may not) know, the Future Residents Task Force
coordinates a Community Open House here at Heritage Hunt
usually in the spring and fall. On the day of the Community
Open House the clubhouse is staffed with resident volunteers
that greet visitors, answer visitor’s questions about HHG&CC,
provide tours of our amenities/facilities, and pass out folders
with community information. We don’t sell houses. We sell
Heritage Hunt as a place to live.
Did you know that the Task Force provides information on
the Heritage Hunt website about the houses that are for sale or
rent? Since the developer is gone, it is up to us as a
Community to let potential buyers know what our community
is all about. To find the list on our website www.heritagehunt.
net, “click” on the About Us, scroll down to and select “Real
Estate”, select “property listings”. You will be presented with a
list of all of the houses for sale or rent, scheduled open houses,
and a map showing where these houses/condos are located
within the community. This list is updated weekly. Most of the
homes listed are with Realtors, but if you are selling or renting
your home yourself, contact Willard Scott, [email protected] to have your information added.
Realtors and sellers are encouraged to have their active listings
held open on the day of the Community Open House. If you

Curb Appeal Ideas?
If you are considering creating your home landscaping front
yard entrance more effectively remember an effective focal
point captures viewers’ attention, directing the gaze to the
desired spot in the design. First, use effective hardscape installation is essential to attaining this goal. Also, you should
strive to using flowering trees and shrubs during spring and
summer and use fall color in the autumn. We will continue
to provide additional recommendations in future issue for
improving your curb appeal.
February Landscape Chores - It’s important to check
recently planted trees and shrubs to determine if they need
watering. This is especially true for evergreens as they can
lose moisture through their leaves and needles.
Gently brush snow off evergreen shrubs on trees to prevent
breakage. February is ideal month to lime the lawn if necessary (as long as the ground is not frozen). Apply 50 pounds
of lime per 1000 square feet of lawn to raise the pH about
half a point. Lawns prefer a pH range of 6.2 to 6.8. Plant
helleborus, witchhazel, heather and primrose for color and
interest in February.
Prune deciduous trees, such as oak, birch, dogwood, crape
myrtle and maple. Pruning can help to improve the structure
of trees to prevent damage from ice and snow as well as
improving their health and vigor. Be sure to remove dead,
broken or branches rubbing together, and then trim to desired size and shape.
If you have fruit trees and roses spray in late February/
March with Lime Sulfer Spray to prevent insect and disease
problems. Only apply the spray if temperatures are above
freezing. Consult with our local experts such as Virginia Cooperative Extension Service or Merrifield Garden Center for
monthly applications to prevent insect and fungal disease.
Pruning Shrubs: Acuba (if needed), Red Twig Dogwood
(prune to ground), Hibiscus, PeeGee Hydranges, Hydrangeas,
Mopheads and Lacecaps (older and weaker stems). Oakleaf,
prune only dead wood. Nandina, prune old canes to ground
to encourage new growth. Photinia, prune hard to desired
height. Spiraea, lightly prune to desired height. Vitex (Chaste
Tree), prune hard. Sedum (‘Autumn Joy’) cut to ground.
Fertilizing Shrubs: Azaleas, fertilize with Holly-tone or high
phosphate fertilizer. Cornus sericea (red twig and yellow
twig dogwoods). Cotoneaster, Daphne, Forsythia, Paeonia,
Rhododendron, Spiraea and Viburnum.
Perennials
Fertilize Clematis with (5-10-10), Siberian Iris (Osmocote
14-14-14), Catmint and Veronica (Osmocote).
If you have containers that are not being used in the winter, turn them over to keep them from collecting water that
could freeze and crack the container.
Gardening for Birds in Heritage Hunt - Birds in the garden
add a pleasing dimension of nature to our lives. Birds will
most likely visit gardens that provide food, water, cover and
nesting areas. It is best to provide some aspect of each component to diversify the habitat and attract a variety of birds
to your garden.
The Heritage Horn • February 2015
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
Little Bit of Dirt
Food- To entice birds to your garden, plant a variety of trees
and shrubs that provide food in the form of fruits and seeds.
Cardinals, finches, bluejays, and chickadees prefer black oil
sunflower seeds where Goldfinches and juncos prefer thistly.
Woodpeckers and nuthatches are attracted by suet. Many
ground feeding birds, like sparrow and doves, juncos and
tohees enjoy a mixture of seed that includes white millet, safflower, peanut hearts, cracked corn and sunflower.
Water- Introducing a water source such as adding a birdbath,
a moving water falls, a fountain or small pond. Birds are attracted to the sound of running water.
Cover- Providing cover can best be achieved by planting
various heights of vegetation. Do not plant vegetation under
birdfeeders as predators can hide a take unknowing birds by
surprise. Consult with a local garden center for recommendations of plants, trees, ground covers, vines and perennials
to attract birds
Nesting Areas- Planting a variety of plants can provide many
places for birds to nest. Mockingbirds, catbirds, and brown
thrashers prefer thickets of vegetation to better conceal their
nests. Cardinals, wood thrushes, and robins prefer thick
shrubs and trees. Warblers, tenager, and hummingbirds
prefer nesting in taller trees. Chickadees, wrens, bluebirds,
and titmice prefer birdhouses, which come in many sizes and
shapes and can be hung in trees or mounted on fence posts.
Choose the type of birdhouse based on which bird you are
trying to attract.

The Community Relations Committee (CRC) sponsors the
popular Residents Forum Series. The sessions are held at the
Heritage Hunt clubhouse in the Mountain View Room on the
2nd Tuesday of every month from 7:00 to 8:30 PM. Each
month a fellow Heritage Hunt resident shares professional
experiences, hobbies and other areas of expertise with their
neighbors.
February 10 – “Our Local Little Theater Scene” - Heritage
Hunt is fortunate to be surrounded by many great little
theater groups. If you’re an avid theater patron (or just
curious), Bets Knepley, founder of the HH Little Theater, will
show that you can see a whole season of plays at one of local
little theaters for the price of one ticket to the Kennedy
Center. Plus she’ll introduce you to many aspects in the
unusual world of the theater. Then you’ll know “who, what
and why is behind that curtain.” Bets has earned her “chops”
in all facets of little theater and is happy to have this
opportunity to share one of her passions. Bets is a longtime
resident of HH and involved in many HH organizations. This
program is her final HH contribution, as she’s moving back to
her home state in May.
March 10 - “From Abidjan to Zinder, from Kingston to Kiev”.
Come hear Trid Mukherje, PhD., retired U.S. Foreign Service
Officer (USAID) and a former professor of Economics speak
to his experience while he lived/worked in some twentyfour (24) countries. Countries in West Africa, the Caribbean,
South Asia, Middle East, and Eastern Europe during 19721996 period, and again during 2002-2004. He will present
in a seminar a comparative review of resource structures
(natural, human, cultural, energy, and strategic) of these
geographic regions based on his living/working experience.
He wrote macroeconomic and sector analyses for most of
these countries and also designed, evaluated and
implemented development projects and programs in many of
them. Please check HHTV, the Heritage Horn and the
clubhouse bulletin board for further updates. The CRC
invites all Heritage Hunt residents to share their experiences
with the community at future Residence Forums. If you or
someone you know in the community has experiences of
interest to the community, or if you have a request for a
repeat/return speaker, please contact Emily Russell at 703743-1975 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Neighbor 2 Neighbor Update
By now some of are probably wondering “What’s going on
with the Neighbor 2 Neighbor (N2N) project?” Over the last
couple of months the project organizers have met several times
to formulate the organization and begin offering transportation and resource referrals for residents in need. During those
meetings we discussed two issues that needed to be resolved:
liability and assessment of who actually is in need within the
community.
First, the project has to address the liability coverage that
protects our community volunteers as they serve their fellow
neighbors. Volunteer drivers must be currently covered by their
own policy and when operating as a part of the N2N project
additional liability coverage is encouraged. In addition, it
has been encouraged to have the organization’s officers carry
a special Directors and Officers liability coverage. Another
recommendation was to have volunteer agree to DMV and
background checks. All of these additional measures means an
expense that in turn would incur an annual fee to those
participating in the program.
The second issue pertains to accurately assessing how many
and what type of needs the community has and can be served
by the N2N volunteer force. Some of the parameters to be
explored that participants would have to adhere to are limiting
transportation service to certain geographic boundaries, signing
a wavier of liability and possessing certain physical/mobility
capabilities. Our challenge is we do not know how many
residents truly need transportation service for things like
medical or grocery visits.
In checking several existing “villages,” we learned those that
are a part of a larger organization such as a local government
no annual fee was charged. However, those “villages” that are
independent and/or smaller in size typically carried an annual
fee that run upwards of $900 per year. So it appears that unless
we can overcome these two issues the N2N project will have to
be put on the shelf for the immediate future. However, we want
to hear from you and ask those that have a last name beginning
with A-M to please contact Mike Brown at [email protected] and those with a last name begining with N-Z should
contact Jim Hannon at [email protected]. Either way
we want to encourage all residents to continue to be a kind and
dependable neighbor to each other as there may come a time
you might just need them to help you.

This past month several Heritage Hunt residents,
including Board members, made their presence heard at
both a local town hall meeting and state hearing in
Richmond. The concern raised is on the proposed
Dominion Power power lines routes with one of the
proposed routes running through the community.
Besides the unsightly look it could add to Heritage Hunt
residents are concerned about the possible impact on
property values and resident health.
After several dozen attended the Town Hall on January
12 at Battlefield High School it was clear that not just
Heritage Hunt residents had the same concern. Several
hundred people from neighboring communities also
expressed their concern with having the new power lines
run through their communities. They along with local
delegate, Bob Marshall, and county supervisor, Pete
Candland, voiced that an underground option along I-66
would be a better alternative.
Heritage Hunt HOA’s new Board president, Ken
Aitchison, stood and expressed concern on behalf of the
community. The following week, at the January Board
meeting, the Board of Directors agreed to give a
donation to the Coalition to Protect PWC to help fight
against the proposed routes running through Heritage
Hunt and neighboring communities. The coalition is a
collaboration of residents from surrounding communities
that attend, voice and communicate updates on this
volatile project. They were responsible for organizing a
bus trip to Richmond on January 28 where several HH
residents and others visited with state representatives to
express their concerns.
As this project continues to develop your Board of
Directors and Association staff are committed to keeping
the community informed through the website and e-mail
communication. To view the latest information and letters
by your Board President and local delegates click on the
announcement found on the Member Home page.

colorful scenes from nature, including landscapes and seascapes; pets, animals in the wild, and journeys to memorable
locations throughout the United States and Europe including
Paris and other exotic spots.
The gift of photography and paintings is in response to the
Health and Rehabilitation Center’s search for ways to enhance
its appearance for the residents and visitors. Photography Club
and Fine Arts Group member, Janet Garney, learning of that
interest, organized a community service project for both clubs
to present a gallery of images to the Center.
Photography Club member Travis Hall, matted and framed
each of the photographs and along with photographer, Al Ruhl,
hung each of the framed prints throughout the Center in the
main hallway plus two living rooms and a private dining room
for the families of residents.
With service to the community as part of the Club’s Mission,
Photography Club President, Sarah Skerker commented, “it
warms your heart to know that this project can bring such joy
and happiness to others. Sharing our club members’ art with
the community isn’t just a joy, it’s an honor.” A picture is a
poem without words. Horace

I’m here!
The HH Hams club is a recent addition to the roster of organizations that keep Heritage Hunt residents active and connected
to the community. Our hams are both hobbyists and emergency volunteers. We support the HH Emergency Planning Group
during our community annual emergency exercise and are
available to support the community whenever communications
services are needed. When not involved in emergency drills,
our members enjoy getting on the air and communicating with
other hams around the world, learning about new radio technologies, or simply building friendships through club meetings
and our Saturday morning chats on the air.
Hams are licensed through the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to operate radio equipment on specific bands
of frequencies. Our club has helped six residents recently get
their ham licenses and is helping several other HH residents
towards that goal through classes conducted by Tim Tatum
(K6SLK) and Steve Crouch (KI4SA).
Amateur radio is a public service that supports local, regional
and national authorities. Oftentimes hams are the only ones
able to provide long distance communications from a crisis
zone. Many hams are also active in the National Traffic System (NTS), a network of stations that move health and welfare
messages across the nation. Many HH residents have also seen
hams in action, as part of the Military Auxiliary Radio System
(MARS) that enabled them to contact loved ones at home
while they were serving in our armed forces overseas.
HH Hams meet every third Thursday evening, 7:00 PM at the
Marsh Mansion. Our meetings feature programs presented
by club members and guests from outside the community.
Recently, John Zorger (WA1STU) who lives near us gave a
presentation on the National Traffic System and explained
how amateur radio nets across the nation are interconnected
to transmit and deliver messages. All residents are invited to
attend. You do not need to have a ham license; only a curiosity
about what ham radio is about. For more information, please
contact Alan Skerker (KC4ZA) by email: [email protected] or by phone: 703 743-2051.

Garden Club @ Heritage Hunt
Are You Ready For Spring?
“What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have never been
discovered.” Ralph Waldo Emerson
Our February 26 meeting (10 AM) will feature renowned
gardening expert David Roos, who might well have coined
the above phrase himself. David is a favorite amongst
gardeners and garden clubs alike! He inherited his
gardening and other lifelong passions from both sides of his
family. He has a gardening design and consulting practice,
worked in nurseries, wrote a newspaper column and gives
garden lectures. He has received his design training at the
New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Design certificate
program in New York City. Mr. Roos’ gardening philosophy
emphasizes a hands-on approach and common sense
practicality. Known for his strident views, Mr. Roos favors
the elimination of Latin terminology, petrochemicals, whitetailed deer and mechanized equipment from the garden.
Many of you may have heard Mr. Roos speak before, and can
attest to his charming, gregarious style. Those of you who
have not, are in for a treat indeed!
Come join us at 10 AM in the Marsh Mansion Living Room
and hear what David has to say about pruning, primping,
planting and preparing your Spring garden. There will be a
Q&A time after the talk. Registration and questions, please
contact Jocelyn Hamilton at 703-743-1298 or via email
[email protected].

HH Hiking Group
The new year began with a hike to High Point Cliff area on
Bull Run Mountain. This overlook with tremendous views
closed for an indefinite period of recovery and restoration
in mid-January and we wanted one last hike to the top. The
duration of the closure depends on the rate of recovery. It
was worth hiking on the snow packed trails! The snow on
the mountains gave a different perspective when viewing the
mountains and valleys from the rocky cliff area. The lower
trails remain open for hiking, so we are sure to explore them
in the spring.
We are planning to do impromptu hikes on Wednesdays
or Friday’s throughout the winter months depending on
weather conditions. To be added to the HH Hiking Club email
contact list please email Margi Worrest at mbworrest@gmail.
com. This will keep you informed of when and where we plan
to hike as well as cancellations due to weather issues. For
more information, call Margi Worrest at 703-743-5023 or

HH Cycling News
Although it was a bit windy, temperatures on December 17th
were very nice and 10 riders rode over to National Harbor
to observe the Christmas decorations in the Gaylord Hotel
atrium and in the harbor itself. Four riders took the long
round trip (~45 miles) by beginning in Vienna and six took
the shorter round trip (~30 miles) by beginning at Bon Air
Park. It was reported, but not confirmed, that due to a lack
of snow, Santa rode in on a bicycle on Christmas day. About
half a dozen “polar bears” braved the cold and wind to ride
out 2014 on December 31st and ride in 2015 on January 1st.
Lower temperatures, wind, and holiday activities kept
cycling activity in December and January light and sporadic;
however, even on days when the temperature was below
freezing and the wind was blowing hard, a few hardy folks
(polar bears) continued to ride and got in rides of 20 - 30+
miles in the local area. The funny thing is that the women
seem to be putting the men to shame. For example, January
5th the temperature at 9:00 was around 30 degrees and the
wind was blowing 25mph, with gusts to 30mph, making the
“feels like” temperature around 25 degrees. Who shows up
to ride? Three women and one man. The four of them rode
26 miles that day while others excused themselves due to
the wind to stay home or go to the gym.
Things that make riding in colder and windy weather
tolerable include: helmet covers (you can make one by
simply taking the visor off, slipping a bowl cover over the
helmet, and reattaching the visor), head coverings (including balaclavas (ski masks) and other types of caps), multiple
layers of breathable clothing, breathable jackets, pants
with wind barriers on the front like ski pants, heavy wool
socks, shoe covers, warm (ski type) gloves or mittens that fit
loosely so air can flow (some like to use a very thin pair of
gloves and put loose fitting ski gloves over them), and little
warming packets to slip in shoes and gloves. Many folks tend
to overdress and begin to sweat after 10-15 minutes of
riding. It is better to start off feeling just a little cold and
warm as you ride. The alternative is to start all bundled up
and remove layers as you go. Some believe the best way to
enjoy winter cycling is to go to Florida for 2-3 months.
Currently, the Cycling Club is meeting every Monday – Friday
at 9 AM at the Marsh Mansion. Persons wishing to get on
the HH Cycling Club email list may do so by emailing Bob
Shannon at [email protected]. Being on the list will
allow you to know when weather conditions are considered
too severe to ride locally or when the club is going to take a
special ride away from HH, like riding the W&OD trail.
On Tuesdays the Club conducts a leisurely ride lasting 60
minutes, over mostly level terrain, that stops at the DeJa
Brew coffee shop in Dominion Valley for coffee and chit chat,
and then rides back to Heritage Hunt.

2015 Bocce League – Looking
For Members
The 2015 Heritage Hunt Bocce League wants new members.
Now entering its sixth year, bocce has grown dramatically
every year. The reason is simple. People love it. Our second
court has proven to be a valuable asset as it’s frequently used.
Matches will take place on Saturday mornings starting March
28th and ending in June, culminating in a championship that
would be covered on ESPN, if they knew what they were doing. You only need one hour each Saturday morning to play.
Teams will be made of five or six people including a captain.
Teams have fun names and some even have mascots. Standings are kept and distributed weekly. The league culminates in
a playoff in which the leading teams go at each other battling
for the coveted trophies and accompanying glory. After it’s all
over, we have an awards dinner. We also have an active social
committee with events designed to maintain friendships over
the full year.
If you are interested in joining the league, or have questions,
please e-mail Dave Leveton at [email protected]. No email? Call me at 2545. For new players, I will conduct training sessions so you can easily learn the game before league
play starts.
Bocce is fun, easy-to-learn, and social. You don’t need prior
experience. You don’t need to be in good physical condition.
You can learn the game in ten minutes. You don’t have to be
there every week. You don’t have to travel as the bocce court
is right in front of the Marsh Mansion. It’s OK if you cannot
make all the games. We know people have other commitments.
You can be part of the team that defeats reigning champions
Baci Grandi.
You just need a desire to have fun, meet new friends, and be
able to roll a ball with some degree of accuracy.
Not sure? Don’t believe me? Ask anyone of your friends or
neighbors who are part of this and I’ll bet they will encourage
you to participate.
One other thing. Due to the increasing number of people who
participate each year, I may have to have a cutoff. New members will be added in the order they respond. Others will be
placed on a waiting list. So hurry and join.

Heritage Hunt Wine Club
Due to renovations at the clubhouse our wine chapter will meet
on the third Wednesday of February and March of 2015 in the
Great Oak Ballroom at 7 PM.
The mission of our Wine Chapter follows the guidelines of The
American Wine Society which were established for the
appreciation and education of wine while supporting the wine
industry. Our February meeting promises to embrace this
mission.
Our guest presenter, Antoinette Landragin of Cork & Fork in
Gainesville’s Atlas Walk, will share her expertise in selection
and enjoyment of quality wines priced at $20 and below. The
Landragin family history in wine making dates back to the late
1700’s and has come full circle in the operation of their three
local retail wine/food/beer shops. Noted for their weekly wine
tastings and wine education classes, Cork & Fork has become
the “Go To” location for exceptional wines at reasonable prices
for the local consumer. Antoinette has been a constant source of
support to our chapter by connecting us with contacts within the
wine industry who frequently present at our monthly meetings.
She further supports our club by allowing us to order and purchase wines through Cork & Fork which ensures we will have a
stellar experience with high quality wines to taste and enjoy at
our meetings.
For a $20/pp tasting fee please join us for social wines, the
tasting of three white and three red wines, paired snacks and
the chance to win prizes. Remeber to bring your own glass(es)
as the club will be unable to provide them for the two remaining meetings of 2015. Reservations for members and guests
are required. Please contact Emily Russell at 703-743-1875 or

Pennsylvania Club
Members of the club met at I-Hop for a great breakfast and
conversation on Thursday, December 18th. 15 members of the
club turned out for breakfast on the 18th. We now have more
than 20 members of our club who get together generally every
other month at various eating establishments or private homes
and our group is growing. We would love to have any HH
former Pennsylvania residents who have not checked us out
come to one of our get togethers and join us. At this last
breakfast we had 4 new former Pennsylvanians join us who
were also new residents to HH. Our next get together is
planned for February 11th at 6:00 p.m. at home of one of our
club’s members. It will be a Pennsylvania pot luck and we are
looking forward to a great time with our current members and
new folks who are interested in joining us. Our get togethers
are purely social. Any HH resident interested in joining us
should call Deborah or Walt Kowal at 703-743-9927 or e-mail
us at [email protected].

Step Aerobics - Staying Active
Hello! My name is Lisa and I am an instructor here at HH.
I’d like to take this opportunity to highlight one of my class
formats: step aerobics! I’m a AFAA certified, with over 20 yrs
of teaching experience. I love what I do, and step is one of my
favorite formats. Not only does it promote functional fitness, it
tones and strengthens the lower body while burning calories.
It’s a great alternative to the faster tempo, traditional aerobicsplus, it’s just plain fun!
I often hear those that have never tried step say “Oh, I can’t
do step!” YES, you CAN! Everyone can learn the basics! (I
am happy to work with anyone who is uncomfortable outside
of class, to help them get started or give a mini tutorial. Like
anything new, it may take a time or two to get familiar with
the cues).
If you find stepping on a platform initially makes you uneasy,
start on the floor. You can always progress to the step when
you feel ready. I also hear “it will hurt my joints!” But consider how it started; Gin Miller was an injured instructor who
got the idea while using stairs to rehab her knee! As with any
exercise, certain moves may bother certain indications..I will
help you modify accordingly.
We step Monday and Thursday at 6 PM. The class is an hour
and we combine upper body strength and abdominal exercises
to balance out the workout. Please consider giving it a try! I’d
love to work with you! And remember, the first class is FREE!
Lisa Moscatello-Hartung, HH Fitness Instructor
Yoga is for Everyone
We will be adding a new yoga class in February! This new
class, called Gentle Yoga, is a yoga class designed to meet
the various needs of the over 55 community. The class will
take place Wednesday mornings from 10:15-11:15 AM in the
clubhouse ballroom. If you’ve been worried about joining the
current yoga class because of its pace or you are unsure of
your stability in standing positions or you’ve just never done it
before and don’t want to be the only newbie in the class, then
this class is perfect for you. It will also be a great place for
those who are recovering from injury, surgery, or suffer from
chronic pain. You will enjoy traditional yoga postures
focusing on the fundamentals including; posture, alignment,
breath, meditation and relaxation techniques. You may have
heard that yoga increases strength, flexibility, range of motion,
balance, improves focus and reduces stress, but did you know
that it also helps improve sleep quality, blood sugar control,
blood pressure, digestion, enhance respiratory function,
alleviates arthritis pain, increases bone density and helps
moderate chronic pain? Yoga has so many wellness benefits.
It’s not a question about whether one should practice it or not,
but which kind of practice is right for you? Asanas (poses) in
this class are adapted to the individual and can be done
standing OR seated in a chair. Yoga is for everyone! Please
bring a yoga mat, beach towel or throw blanket, a block, and
strap if you have one. Also don’t forget to wear comfortable
clothing that you can move in. Stay healthy and hope to see
you soon at Gentle Yoga.
Elizabeth Finnan, HH Fitness Instructor
