July - Pine Tree Quilt Guild
The Pine Needle Press Volume 30 Issue 7 ! Pine Tree Quilt Guild July 2013 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A newsletter of the Pine Tree Quilt Guild of Nevada County, having taken root in the fabric of the Grass Valley community since 1984. Published monthly except August. 11255 Banner Mine Way, Nevada City 95959 www.PineTreeQuiltGuild.com July President’s Message When traveling, I am continually on the lookout for interesting new quilt shops! Last month, my husband and I took a short trip to one of our favorite places, the Mendocino Coast. Whenever we go there, I always manage to fit in a visit to Sew n Sew, a great little quilt shop in Ft. Bragg. It is on Elm Street, at the northern end of town. They have a wide variety of modern and traditional fabrics and a great selection of wool felt. They also sell handy kits for candle mats as well as art quilting supplies. I found a wonderful book on art quilts that I had to buy! How about you? Any unique shops along your travel routes? Let me know and I will mention it in our newsletter. I would love to write a monthly column, sharing our experiences in shop-hopping. Just send me a brief description of the shop, along with its location. Be sure to include any unique features that we might enjoy. Have a wonderful summer and I hope to see many of you at the July picnic! Joan Mosley Editorʼs Note: I am finishing this newsletter while I am on vacation, so I apologize for any mistakes or omissions in advance. See you in July..... JULY 9TH, SUMMER PICNIC NEXT GENERAL MEETING, SEPTEMBER 3RD Myrna Raglin delivered the quilt that a group of us made for Norine Ignasio. She gave it to her shortly after the quilt show, and Norine was very touched and pleased that we were thinking about her and concerned about her health. She is doing much better and is able to be back working at Sugar Pine one day per week. If you are there on a Wednesday be sure to say hello. 4 4 1 8 5 3 The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Page 3 SKILL BUILDERS Yes, we still sew in June and July and the project is paper piecing. Bring at least 4 fat quarters (that work together) to learn the block and if you're really serious bring a yard of each. This block is like potato chips, you can't do just one. June will be on the 27th because of Vacation Bible School July will be the normal date, the 3rd Thursday at the Adventist Church along with Drop-In and Community Service. 10:00am - 3:00pm. AFFILIATE OF THE MONTH: SUGAR PINE QUILT SHOP ... Everyone knows Bonnie at Sugar PIne Quilt Shop. She is always ready to help quilters choose a fabric, find a needed tool, or share any of her knowledge that you might need. As an independent, read - not a franchise, in Grass Valley, she is a treasure that we need to help flourish! If you havenʼt been in to Sugar Pine lately, it might be worth a trip, sheʼs always getting new fabrics. As I write this, I am in Steamboat Springs, CO, and the little fabric store here doesnʼt hold a candle to our own Sugar Pine...we are most fortunate! Workshops for 2013 Mark your calendars now! Come and learn something new. You always take away another piece of information to add to your quilting knowledge base. You can’t beat the price! Workshops for 2013 Held at the ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Seventh Day Adventist Church, 12889 Osborne Hill Rd., Grass Valley, the Wednesday after guild meeting. Classes start run from 9:00 am until 3:30 pm. Call or email Marta Price to save your spot, 274-1691, [email protected]. September, Marjorie Johnson will be showing how to make a landscape, story telling quilt or garment. In October Karen Boutte will be offering class on a Puzzle Portraits and in November, Thom Atkins will hold a Beading 2 class. These workshops are a bargain at $25. The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! Page 4 Opportunity Quilt Lorna Straka, the Opportunity Quilt Chair, unveiled the 2014 Opportunity Quilt. This was made by the Sew Happy Mini Group. It has a summer theme, in blues and yellows and is king size. Lorna is looking for a co-chair to help market the quilt. She also asked for donations for the Paint the Town Pink Event. Because the Guild members donated so many items to their silent auction last year, we were able to market our quilt at the Paint the Town Pink celebration without payment for a booth. This takes place in October. Community Services and Drop In and Sew Community Service, DIS, and Skill Builders will meet on Thursday, June 27. NOTE: this is the fourth Thursday, not our regular third Thursday. Third Thursday dates for the remainder of 2013 are: 18 July 15 August 19 September 17 October 21 November Hope you join us at Community Service / DIS this year. We have lots of fabric for quilts of all sizes and for all ages. Come for the day or an hour or two; bring a lunch or a snack – we provide chocolate, homemade cookies, coffee, tea, and hot cocoa as well as fabric, rulers, and rotary cutters. HOME WORKSHOP In the September Home Workshop we will be working with the technique of faux chenille. Fabrics will be layered, stitched and then sliced. The resulting fabric can be used in many ways, for example: clothing, bags, pillows, quilt blocks. Join us on September 19th at 10:30 to learn this fun way of working with fabric. The class will be held at the Seventh Day Adventist Fellowship Hall. Sign up at the September guild meeting or contact Sue Robertson for more The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! _ Page 5 Guild Challenge For the 2014 Guild Challenge, you draw a word from 3 different bags. One bag has colors; one bag has shapes and one bag has nouns. The nouns all have to do with Summer and Picnics. These will tie in with the 2014 Quilt show. Your color can range from light to dark and you may add other colors. You must have at least one of your shape on your quilt top. Your noun must also be on your quilt top. The bags will be at every meeting until February. 36 people pulled words at the June meeting. You may draw at any time. If you do not like one of the words you drew, you may draw again. If you still do not like your new word, you may draw one more time but you must use the new word you draw. While I would love to have everyone make a challenge quilt, you are not committing to making one by pulling words. I am looking forward to all the beautiful and creative quilts that do show up. The quilts are due at our March meeting and will be hung, voted on and ribbons awarded at that time. We will have the usual categories as well as a new one just for this year. As it is our 30th Anniversary, we will also have a ribbon for the best addition of 30 into your quilt top. The quilts will then be hung at the show for everyone to vote for their favorite. Share and Care Do you know someone in the Guild who is under the weather and can use some cheering? Whether it is illness, surgery, or loss of a loved one, please let me know so an appropriate card can be sent. Many came in search of a good buy at Carolʼs Stash Sale. Marjorie worked hard at organizing all of Carolʼs supplies for her many crafts. We all had fun as we watched or searched for something we just couldnʼt live without! Thanks to Marjorie and her crew for all their hard work. Page 7 The Pine Needle Press! ! ! ! ! ! _ Page 8 SPEAKERS TO COME On September 3 our speaker is Marjorie Johnson of Modesto with her lecture, Landscape Art, The Story It Tells. She will tell us about creating the sculpture of cloth. She will also have a workshop entitled Landscape Story Telling. To know more about Marjorie go to her website: www.marjoriefibertart.com. October 1 speaker is Karen Boutte (pronounced Boo tay) with her lecture, “African American Quilts and Quilters.” Karen has been teaching and lecturing since 1996, and is a nationally known quilt instructor and designer of quilts and garments. She is the author of, “Delightful Diva Designs.” Her workshop Puzzle Portraits is open for your participation. Go to her website: www.quiltdiva.com to see her amazing work. Our last speaker of the year is Thom Atkins. Thom came to us last year with his lecture and popular workshop that was expanded to two days along with a request that he return. He’ll be back with his lecture, “Quilts Start to Finish” and workshop, Beads II, Borders and Bezels. Thom is a master beader of quilts and more can be seen on his website: www.thomatkins.com. Our speaker workshops are an unbelievable bargain you won't find anywhere. There are always new techniques to learn, new designs to consider, and a whole lot of enjoyment spending the day with friends doing what we all do best. The program committee works to bring you interesting and expert speakers and workshops incorporating both traditional and innovative quilting. We would like to see 15 or more participants in each workshop so that the Guild breaks even with this invaluable program. If you haven’t signed up for a workshop lately, challenge yourself, and sign up for one of the 3 remaining scheduled for the rest of the year. As Martha Stewart would say, "It’s a good thing" the Guild subsidizes our workshops! Participants in Susan Elseʼs May workshop shared their sculptures at the June meeting. They had a great time and were very enthusiastic about signing up for other classes. Marjorie did not sculpt her cell phone, but was trying to show a picture of her flower!
