City of La Mirada SUMMER 2014 The La Mirada Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit 501(c)6 membership based organization led by a Board of Directors. The Chamber is dedicated to local and regional economic development as well as enhancing the La Mirada community. The Chamber’s network of partners, including business owners, professionals, and business representatives of small and large businesses, strive to create and promote a climate where businesses can operate in a productive and profitable manner. This is accomplished through the creation of networking and promotional opportunities that makes it possible for members to share and promote their business to one another and the public. “Joining the La Mirada Chamber of Commerce is a great way to gain new business prospects, be an active part of your community, and learn more about ways to advertise your business,” says Chamber President Octavio Duran. Benefits of being a member of the Chamber include ribbon cutting ceremonies for business grand openings, monthly membership meetings, mixers, website promotional opportunities, social events and participation in community events. Starbucks Honored for its Community Work Starbucks was recognized by the City Council for its long history of community involvement and volunteerism. Mayor Larry Mowles presented the certificates to Store Managers Kimberly Hammond and Monica Hernandez during a recent City Council meeting. Since opening its first La Mirada store in 1999 along Imperial Highway, and a second store along Rosecrans Avenue in 2006, Starbucks has sponsored various City events and programs by providing complimentary refreshments, supplies, and volunteers for the Polar Bear Plunge at Splash!, the Mother-Daughter Tea, and Chili Holiday Celebration. Starbucks also sponsors Café on the Green, a nutrition program for seniors at the La Mirada Activity Center. La Mirada Starbucks employees also took part in a clean-up effort at Frontier Park through the City’s Helping Hands program. Local businesses interested in being recognized through the Business Recognition Program are encouraged to contact the Economic Development Team at (562) 943-0131. 99 Cents Only Store Grand Re-Opening The 99 Cents Only Store located on 14540 Leffingwell Road held its Grand Re-Opening Ceremony on Aug. 7 to celebrate a number of store improvements, including higher shelves and better deals on products. Mayor Larry Mowles and Council-member Andrew Sarega presented Store Manager Edwin Martinez with a plaque commemorating the event and took part in the ribbon cutting ceremony. The store held a number of special giveaways for the first several hundred customers who attended the re-opening, including scooters, coffee makers and flat screen televisions, all for only 99 cents each. Founded in 1982, 99 Cents Only Stores emphasize quality namebrand consumables, priced at an excellent value. More than half of the company’s sales come from food and beverages, including produce, dairy, deli and frozen foods, along with organic and gourmet foods. Crossroads Center Renovation Nears Completion Completion of the redeveloped Crossroads Shopping Center is drawing near. Since 2011, the Center has been under renovation, which has resulted in a new layout, new businesses, facade improvements, and upgraded landscaping and lighting. Businesses such as Walgreens and Walmart Neighborhood Market have opened and serve as the Center’s anchors. Jersey Mike’s Subs has announced it will be opening a new location adjacent to the Walmart Neighborhood Market. The new restaurant will be under construction this fall and will be a welcome addition to the Center. Additional spaced are expected to be filled by casual dining eateries and other commercial uses including Wabba Grill, Menchies Yogurt, State Farm, H+R Block, and Super Cuts. All of the improvements were completed by the private property owner. The design of the Center is in keeping with the development standards of the Imperial Corridor Specific Plan. SBA Loan Changes Offer Greater Access to Financing The U.S. Small Business Administration made two significant changes to the 504 and 7(a) loan programs this past April in an effort to make it easier for more businesses to qualify for affordable financing. The first change is the elimination of the personal resource test, which has generally restricted high-net-worth individuals from participating in an SBA loan. This change acknowledges the fact that many businesses struggle to find financing and that such loans play an important role in purchasing necessary equipment, making building improvements, and investing in other capital needs. The second change, which only affects the SBA 504 loan, extends the time period business owners are allowed to justify expenditures already invested in a project. The rule capped eligible costs within a nine-month window before approval of the loan. Now, businesses can roll eligible expenses that were incurred beyond nine months into their financing package. This allows business owners who must make quick decisions regarding capital investments to take action before their SBA 504 loan is fully approved. Some restrictions apply; a local Certified Development Company (CDC) can help ensure upfront capital investment costs can be recouped through this type of loan. Fore more information on the 504 and 7(a) small business loan programs, visit sba.gov/loanprgrams or call the Los Angeles District Office at (818) 552-3201. La Mirada welcomes the following new businesses: Shop! See! Splash!, the shop La Mirada campaign, is going on now!
