Fall 2010 - ARFhouse
FALL 2010 VOLUME 12, ISSUE 3 A non-profit, tax-exempt organization A Miracle for Jessie! I f you’ve received our past two newsletters, you know about “Jessie,” our dear little Aussie mix who arrived with a mangled back (left) leg that had to be amputated. Unfortunately the right back leg had only a partial foot and she probably had never used it. With the left leg gone, she had to depend on what was remaining of that leg and, thus, spent her days scooting around on her back side. After quite a lot of wasted time searching the internet for a suitable prosthesis, Danny Brakebill suggested we contact Hanger Prosthetics right here in Sherman. We followed up, and there in their shop. We waited only 3 days for Jessie to be fitted with her new leg/foot. She was off and running in a few hours after getting accustomed to the feel of the prosthesis. It’s a miracle for her. “Jessie” had a lot of medical needs; i.e., amputation, heartworm treatment, spay, vaccines, and dental work. We’re grateful to Deb Blakeney for her gift to cover these medical procedures. were told that Steve Prock, who would make a decision about Jessie and if they could help her, was in Haiti assisting the unfortunate folks who lost limbs in that terrible tragedy. When he returned, one of the staff members called us to set up an appointment. Steve made a little cast for Jessie, and his assistant, James Thompson, formed the device right Thanks to ARFhouse Friends When we told LuRuth Taylor how much the economy had affected our donations she offered a $5,000 challenge grant, which Joyce Dennehy immediately met. We’re deeply grateful for their friendship toward our animals and willingness to always share with the dogs, to make their lives better. Arden Stromnes with “Spoozie,” the ARFhouse dog she sponsors. Arden and her parents wre in town visiting family members and came to meet “Spoozie” in person. NEWCOMERS IDA “I’m ‘Ida’. I heard someone say I’m a poodle. I was found at an abandoned house. Someone used to take care of me, but I was alone for several days before a person came and took me to ARFhouse. I would make a fun playmate for someone. I love to bark and run and play and cuddle.” NIKKO “Nikko” is a 14 yr old guy whose guardian passed away. A rescue group near Ft. Worth had taken him in when none of the man’s relatives could/would make a place for “Nikko.” This group had supported our work over the years and asked if we might be able to make room for “Nikko”. He fits into our big pack as though he’s lived here all his life. C.C. “C.C.” wandered into a busy street near a municipal swimming site in a neighboring town. She stood in the middle of traffic, appearing confused. Twelve-yearold Greyson Allen was concerned about the little dog so his grandma and our friend, Sandy Niemann, stopped to pick her up and called me. Sandy has been a friend to ARFhouse for many years, donating time to do the difficult task of layout of our quarterly newsletter. “C.C.” is an elderly dog with a thyroid issue, as well as dry eye. She requires daily medication for both conditions. She seems very happy here at ARFhouse and one of our staff people wants to take her into her home, if her current pets are agreeable. Chrissy BENNIE “Bennie” was at a shelter in Collin County, scheduled to be euthanized in 24 hrs. Our friend, Karen Hash (with Canyon Creek Animal Hospital) told us about him and asked if we had room. How could we turn this little boy away? He loves everyone, and will soon find his forever home. -2- NEWCOMERS, cont. BELINDA “I’m ‘Belinda’. I lived near ARFhouse. My lady was an older person and couldn’t take care of me and ‘Boots’ anymore, so we were running the road and chasing cars every chance we got. Finally the Missus decided we were going to be run down and she asked the ladies at ARFhouse to take me and ‘Boots’. They say someone will want us some day, but I’m not so sure. I’m no spring chicken anymore. “Chicken! Yum, I wish I had some chicken right now.” “Hi, I’m ‘Boots” APPEAL FROM MARTHA HOVERS & THE ARFHOUSE CANINE RESIDENTS For many years we’ve put aside money for a “rainy day”. Unfortunately that day has arrived. During the past two months we’ve had to take over $20K out of our money market account. We know that the economy is affecting everyone in a negative way; especially charities. And with so many in need at this time, a number of our longtime contributors have moved on to other “causes”. This means we must turn more animals away, when the number of requests to take strays has increased. Every donation is important. Please remember that these rescues and subsequent adoptions happen because you opened your hearts and gave so that the animals would have a safe haven. “Jordy” “Howdy, these women named me ‘Jordy’. That doesn’t sound very appropriate for a cowdog, does it? I guess I’ll have to live with it.... at least until I find my new mama and daddy. I was the last kid left in a bunch of us, born to a couple of ‘heelers’. What the heck is a ‘heeler’? Anyway, the gals at ARFhouse decided I was too cute to send away, so they took me in. I know someone is gonna want me to chase their cows for them, though. Any cowboys out there?” ADOPTIONS “Grizzly” and “Tank” were adopted at the PetSmart in Frisco, during one of the events Dr. Erin Shults held on our behalf. Erin takes numerous rescue dogs and kittens to adoption twice a month. We’re grateful to have her help. She’s found homes for more than 30 of the ARFhouse dogs in the past 3 months. Tina with Harley and Maggie Anna with “Grizzly.” Jack with “Tank.” From Court Custody to Retirement Home Remember the elderly dalmatian who came to ARFhouse after being seized by the court in Grayson County? Here he is with Larry Pryor (l), and Bob Schultz (r), ready to leave for Georgia, a little south of Atlanta. Larry and Bob were kind enough to make this long drive so that “Westin” could find his retirement home with Jim who loves the senior dals. They also volunteered to bring “Conway” to Dallas -- another rescue dog who has a home in AZ. “Conway” met another transporter in Dallas and was on his way to his forever home with Katy a few days later. We’re very grateful to Larry and Bob for sacrificing time and energy to help the old dogs. Tina and Jonathan wanted a companion for their Harley, and Maggie has turned out to be perfect for all three of them. She snuggles in their big bed, along with Harley and the couple. Ahhh, the good life! “Moxie” was here for several months. When Steve saw her on our PetFinder site, she looked so much like a friend’s dog (that he loves), he decided Moxie was the dog for him. As you can see, it’s a great match. Steve writes that he sometimes can’t concentrate at work because he wants to get home to play with Moxie. Wish all our dogs could find people like Steve. Moxie’s a lucky dog! -3- Brakebill Veterinary Hospital Made The Following “In Memory” Donations “Diamond” Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Sakowski “Jazmine” Arlene Rutledge “Cocoa” Mr. & Mrs. Dave Luymes “Samantha” Jason Richards “Suka” Mr. & Mrs. Gerry Shehan “Little Bit” Joyce Tolbert “Freckles” Mr. & Mrs. John Bullard “Koda” & “Rajah” Mr. & Mrs. Joseph Ouellet “Preston” Mr. & Mrs. Ed Richardson “Douglas” Andy & Margie Anderson “Wade” Mr. & Mrs. Ken Day “Princess” Patricia Vail “Coco” Tracy Orrick “Lexie” Andrea Reid “Buster” Mr. & Mrs. Ken Hubbard “Coco” Darlene Schweizer “Pumpkin” Mr. & Mrs. Ralph Courtney “Jake” Joseph Dell “Forrest” Bennie & Becky Hall “Kitty” Melissa McLemore “Pantera” Joanne Grant & Family “Baron” W.P.
