BÖHLER steel rules are 100% made in Austria/Europe! 4 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES GENERAL INFORMATION All necessary production steps – from the selection of the best suitable raw material to the finished cutting rule – take place in the unique production facilities of Böhler-Uddeholm Precision Strip in Austria/Europe. Specific operating procedures (cold rolling, heat treatment, edge machining, bevel hardening, …) using state-of-the-art production lines guarantee the production of cutting rules with optimal product features and properties. We carefully select our raw material suppliers. Perfect raw materials are the prerequisite for high quality steel rules. PRODUCTION RANGE Böhler cutting, scoring and label rules are separated into two main groups, illustrating the optimum properties for the respective applications: Through-hardened Rules: These rules have a uniformly high hardness on the cutting edge and in the body. Special heat treatment produces a particular grain structure and a soft, ductile outer skin, which facilitates the required bendability. The cutting edge is usually shaved (longitudinally worked), with a very high dimensional accuracy. TOP hard This all-purpose steel rule from BÖHLER offers good bendability and is suitable for low runs. Used for: Cardboard, corrugated board, … soft, ductile H 75 very hard soft, ductile A very hard rule, which can be bent to 85° due to controlled surface decarburisation. It offers the highest stability and performance during difficult cutting operations. Used for: Gaskets, rubber, plywood, cork, felt, beer mats, … body ~ 450 HV (45 HRC) edge Bendability: α = 80° (2 pt rule) R ~ 0,3 mm Thickness: (pt) 1,1 / 1,5 / 2 / 3 / 4 Heights: 8,0 – 100 mm (depending on thickness) 0.276” – 3.937” Edge finish: S Packaging: magenta Hardness: body edge Bendability: (2 pt rule) Thickness: (pt) Heights: (depending on thickness) Edge finish: Packaging: Hardness: ~ 525 HV (51 HRC) α = 85° R ~ 1,7 mm 2/3/4 9,55 – 100 mm 0.376” – 3.937” S red 5 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES Edge-hardened Rules: In addition to the properties offered by through-hardened rules, these types have an induction hardened cutting edge. Therefore, these rules provide an excellent wear resistance and long die life. Bevels are available with a drawn, ground and polished cutting edge finish. extra hard cutting edge soft soft, ductile extra hard cutting edge medium soft, ductile extra hard cutting edge hard soft, ductile extra hard cutting edge very hard soft, ductile UNIVERSAL body edge Bendability: Hardness: ~ 340 HV (35 HRC) ~ 640 HV (57 HRC) α = 60° has the excellent bending properties of soft steel, with the long service life of an extra hard cutting edge and can, therefore, be universally used. Used for: Cardboard, corrugated board, labels, post cards, … (2 pt - shaved) Thickness: (pt) Heights: R ~ 0,3 mm 1,1 / 1,5 / 2 / 3 / 4 8,0 – 50,8 mm (depending on thickness) Edge finish: Packaging: 0.315” – 2.000” S, G, P orange UNIVERSAL 40 Hardness: offers higher body hardness resulting in increased rule stability. This rule better stands overload during die cutting operation. Used for: Cardboard, corrugated board, labels, post cards, … UNIVERSAL 60 combines the body hardness level of the TOP rule with the advantages of an induction hardened cutting edge. This means high rigidity, outstanding wear resistance and long service life. Used for: Plastic, thin gaskets, foils, puzzles, … UNIVERSAL 75 offers excellent stability as well as wear resistance. Therefore, it is very well suited when cutting heavy materials such as non-asbestos gaskets, laminates, metal foils, plastics and other abrasive materials. body ~ 390 HV (40 HRC) edge ~ 640 HV (57 HRC) Bendability: α = 70° (2 pt - shaved) R ~ 0,35 mm Thickness: (pt) 1,1 / 1,5 / 2 / 3 / 4 Heights: 8,0 – 50,8 mm (depending on thickness) 0.315” – 2.000” Edge finish: S, G, P Packaging: orange body ~ 450 HV (45 HRC) edge ~ 640 HV (57 HRC) Bendability: α = 80° (2 pt - shaved) R ~ 0,3 mm Thickness: (pt) 1,1 / 1,5 / 2 / 3 / 4 Heights: 8,0 – 100,0 mm (depending on thickness) 0.315” – 3.937” Edge finish: S, G, P Packaging: yellow Hardness: body edge Bendability: (2 pt rule) Thickness: (pt) Heights: (depending on thickness) Edge finish: Packaging: Hardness: ~ 525 HV (51 HRC) ~ 670 HV (58 HRC) α = 90° R ~ 1,7 mm 2/3/4 12,0 – 100,0 mm 0.472” – 3.937” S, G, P orange 6 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES HARDNESS VALUES AND BENDING PROPERTIES Guaranteed Bending Properties Hardness Brand Body ~ 450 HV BÖHLER TOP BÖHLER H 75 BÖHLER UNIVERSAL BÖHLER UNIVERSAL 40 BÖHLER UNIVERSAL 60 BÖHLER UNIVERSAL 75 BÖHLER Edge Edge Finish (45 HRC) ~ 525 HV (51 HRC) ~ 340 HV ~ 640 HV Bending Angle Bending Radius R [mm] S α = 80° 0,3 0,3 0,6 1,1 S α = 85° – 1,7 3,5 6,5 S α = 60° 0,3 0,3 0,4 0,7 (35 HRC) ~ 390 HV (57 HRC) ~ 640 HV G S α = 85° α = 70° 0,3 0,3 0,4 0,3 0,6 0,4 (40 HRC ~ 450 HV (45 HRC) ~ 525 HV (57 HRC) ~ 640 HV (57 HRC) ~ 670 HV G S α = 90° α = 80° α = 85° 0,3 0,3 0,4 0,3 0,6 0,6 1,1 0,7 1,1 1,1 0,5 0,5 0,6 1,1 (51 HRC) (58 HRC) G α = 90° – 1,7 3,5 6,5 ® G S S = shaved 1,5 pt 2 pt 3 pt 4 pt G = ground 0,53 mm 0,71 mm 1,05 mm 1,42 mm CUTTING RULES for automated bending machines Based on the high bending consistency of our present TOP and UNIVERSAL cutting rules, we have developed two rule qualities which offer absolute constant bending properties and are therefore ideal for use with automatic benders. • TOP Auto-Flex • UNI Auto-Flex Auto-Flex rules allow a variety of uniform bending shapes due to tightest production tolerances. BÖHLER K-BACK compensation back edge (K-back) Cutting rules with flat (rectangular) back eventually create problems when bending narrow angles because of the bulging effect on the cutting rule back. The unique BÖHLER K-back (compensation back) minimizes this effect and offers various benefits: • Minimizing of rule back deformation without broaching necessity (height compensation) • Self levelling of the rule when high cutting force is applied. The rule back is flattened slightly • Knifes with round back execution fit easier into plywood slots in comparison with square shaped rule backs 7 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES TYPES OF CUTTING BEVELS In order to meet with the various cutting applications, we offer the complete bevel range. CF – Centre Face (Centre Bevel) CF The CF-bevel is the most commonly used symmetric cutting edge for standard cardboard. Standard edge angle: 53° (others on request) SF – Side Face (Single Bevel) SF This type of cutting edge is particularly suitable for cutting hard materials (gaskets, displays and close shapes). The minimum counter bevel facilitates a right angled, straight cut. CFDB – Centre Face Double Bevel CFDB This type of cutting edge reduces the cutting force required when cutting hard and/or thick materials, such as glass fibre reinforced laminates, leather, cork, rubber, jigsaw puzzles, corrugated board, plastics, plywood, etc. SFDB – Side Face Double Bevel SFDB The SFDB profile offers the same advantages as the CFDB when cutting thicker materials. SFDB has the advantage that the substrate is left with a square 90° cut edge and all the distortion from penetration is left on the material waste. Not available in “G” execution. 8 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES CUTTING BEVEL FINISH S: Shaved (drawn) Cutting Bevel The standard finish of BÖHLER cutting rules is a precision drawn quality surface bevel. The prime benefits are excellent bendability and rule height consistency. G: Ground (sharpened) Cutting Bevel: (G) For the efficient cutting of plastics, rubber, laminates and coated materials, a ground cutting edge has proven the best. For these applications we recommend our induction hardened cutting rules (UNI, UNI 60 and UNI 75) in ground edge finish. Ground finishing guarantees a sharper cutting edge resulting in cleaner cutting faces, less knife wear and therefore easier penetration into the cutting material, thus, reducing cutting force. For thermoforming jobs UNI 60 “G” is highly recommended. P: Polished Bevel Polished cutting rules combine the benefits of shaved (drawn) and ground (sharpened) execution in one rule. result is a very smooth (fine grain) surface offering: dust reduction less friction when the rule penetrates into the cutting material cleaner cutting faces improved bending properties in the rule top edge compared to ground execution • rounding off the transition zone between cutting bevel and body The • • • • This execution is also available with polished double bevel (PL) in CFDB and SFDB. rounded 9 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES COATED CUTTING RULES In general coated cutting rules provide several advantages such as reduced dust, longer tool life and less wear on rules and counterplates. The Supreme cutting rule was originally developed for the label industry with the goal to restrict the build-up of adhesive on the cutting edge. This type of rule is now used successfully in a variety of applications. It has gained reputation for dust-reduction for boards with increased recycled fibre content. Supreme-coating significantly reduces mechanical wear and tear on the cutting edge thereby considerably increases the cutting die lifetime. In the same way the required press force is substantially lowered, which contributes considerably to extending the life of expensive automatic platens. SUPREME coating soft, ductile Product Information: By means of a special process the cutting bevel of the Supreme rule is coated with a thin anti-friction-film which fills the microscopically small pores and marks on the cutting edge and thereby adds to the smoothness of the bevel surface. Supreme coated rules are offered in Universal and Universal 60. Special Characteristics: • dust-reduced cutting • reduction of press force thus less wear on die cutting equipment • reduction of friction between cutting edge and cutting material • substantially increased service life of the die TINIT (TiN) Tinit cutting rule bevels are coated with a thin TiN-layer of approx. 1 micron. The unique feature of TINIT coating is its extreme hardness of ~ 2400 HV based on a hardened cutting edge with ~ 640 HV. TINIT rule benefits: • significantly increased die lifetime • higher efficiency in the converting process • increase in productivity due to fewer die changes • higher wear-resistance on cutting edge • same good bendability as uncoated rule • less dust in cutting process Bendability, body structure, cutting geometry and dimensions are comparable to our standard Böhler Universal rule. TINIT is available in shaved execution, in CF and CFDB (double bevel) and optional in Universal 60. TINIT coating ~ 0,001 mm soft, ductile TEFLON For sensitive applications we offer Teflon coated rules on basis of BÖHLER UNIVERSAL. Teflon coating reduces significantly sticking effects in the die cutting process. Teflon also supports anti-bacteria effects. Teflon is available in 1.000 mm lengths. 10 BÖHLER CUTTING RULES DIMENSIONS AND TOLERANCES: Thickness Range: 0,45 – 2,13 mm (1,3pt – 6pt) [pt] Rule Thickness s [mm] [inch] 1,3 1,4 1,5 2 3 4 6 0,45 0,50 0,53 0,71 1,05 1,42 2,13 0.018” 0.020” 0.021” 0.028” 0.041” 0.056” 0.084” Thickness Tolerance [mm] [inch] ± 0,015 ± 0,015 ± 0,015 ± 0,015 ± 0,020 ± 0,020 ± 0,025 ± 0.0006” ± 0.0006” ± 0.0006” ± 0.0006” ± 0.0008” ± 0.0008” ± 0.0010” Rule thickness is a major parameter when bending on automated rule processors. Conventional Creasing of Plastics: • Local reduction of folding resistance by decreasing the material thickness, no creasing matrix is used. • Creased parts may bulge, which create problems in automatic folding and gluing machines. • Hot-creasing technology gives better results, but is expensive. • Creased plastic sheets may develop micro-cracks upon folding, visible as milky shades in the material. Plastic-Crease: • Very localised reduction of folding resistance prevents micro-cracks and “whitening” of the creasing track. • Plastic-Crease creates less material displacement, creased parts therefore remain flat.
