Preparing for the Schoolship Experience
PREPARING FOR THE SCHOOLSHIP EXPERIENCE Please ensure that you have completed all of the items in the following checklist prior to your Schoolship experience. It is extremely important that students understand the guidelines for this trip—particularly in the areas of proper clothing and expected behavior. Taking the time to prepare students and to set expectations prior to the Schoolship experience can ensure a positive and memorable experience. Two Weeks before Your Trip: • • • • Divide your class into five study groups and complete the Schoolship Manifest form with first and last names. Email the completed manifest to ISEA. This is an important legal document that needs to be given to ISEA in a timely manner. Mail your Schoolship balance to the ISEA office so it arrives a minimum of 30 days prior to the date of your sail. ISEA needs this payment before you sail with us. Copy the Parent Information Sheet for each student and ensure a copy goes home with each student. This is important information concerning dress and weather policies as well as some safety information. Please be sure that all parents and students understand it. One Week before Your Trip: • • • Check arrival and departure times and ensure all drivers and trip organizers are aware of these times. Note: Arrival times do not include trips to the bathroom or looking around the Education Center. Please account for these separately. Copy the directions to your Schoolship dock and the designated parking area for your drivers. Review the student information sheet and Schoolship schedule with your class so they will know what to expect. One or Two Days before Your Trip: • • • Have students watch the Pre-Boarding Safety Instructional Video. This video can be found on the ISEA website at: http://schoolship.org/programs/school-field-trips/. Emphasize to your students that the Schoolship will sail despite rain and cold. Sweaters, fleece, rain gear, winter jackets, and warm hats are recommended as needed. Keep in mind that no matter what, the temperature on the water is at least 10° cooler than on land. Double check that there are no changes that need to be made to the manifest—if there are changes, notify ISEA. Inland Seas Education Association P.O. BOX 218 100 Dame Street Suttons Bay, Michigan 49682 (231) 271-3077 [email protected] www.schoolship.org Directions: To the schooner Inland Seas : 100 Dame Street, Suttons Bay, MI 49682 From Traverse City, take M-22 north 15 miles to Suttons Bay. M-22 is called St. Joseph Avenue in Suttons Bay. Just after the blinking light on the edge of town at Broadway, turn right onto Madison Street (just past the 5/3 Bank). Turn right again, through the parking lot behind the Millside Building, and head to the parking lot behind the Inland Seas Education Center (gray and white building with a red roof). Park at the back of the lot and remain on the paved area. Do not drive down the dirt road toward the dock. Students will go into the Education Center where an ISEA representative will introduce the program and escort the class to the schooner. Please use the bathroom before arriving at ISEA. If necessary, there are two bathrooms in the Education Center, though there is not much time built in to use them. If the entire class is going to need to use the bathroom, plan to get to ISEA more than 30 minutes prior to your sail. To the schooner Manitou : 13258 SW Bay Shore Drive, Traverse City, MI 49684 The tall ship Manitou and its ticket office are located in Traverse City on M-22, approximately 0.7 miles north of the intersection of M-22 and M-72. The schooner Manitou is on the east side of the road, this is where the students will be dropped off. Please do not drop the students off at the Traverse Tall Ship Company ticket office on the west side of M-22 since no one is allowed to cross the street (M-22) on foot. Cars and buses can park in the Traverse Tall Ship Company ticket lot across the street after dropping off the students. An ISEA representative at the dock will introduce the program and escort the class to the schooner. Please use the bathroom before arriving at the dock. There is a bathroom on the schooner, but in order to not take time out of the field trip, we suggest going before arrival. Inland Seas Education Association P.O.
