This guide is divided by topic, not service provider. For an alphabetical listing of service
providers please see the index.
This guide was compiled by UA interns and by Julie Kasper, School Coordinator for Refugee
Resettlement during the Spring, 2015 semester and over the summer of 2015. Because it is
intended to be shared digitally, updates can be made at any point. Please contact Julie

Catalina Foothills School District
1 Early Learning Center, 4 Elementary Schools, 2 Middle Schools, 1 High School.
All English learners receive daily hours of English Language Development (ELD) and participate in the
Individual Language Learners Plan (ILLP). Students in the elementary schools will be in the mainstream
classroom and in small group with an ELD teacher. In middle and high school, students are able to enroll
in additional English classes.

Imago Dei Middle School
An independent, tuition-free middle school for children of low-income families from Tucson
neighborhoods. “We admit children of diverse faiths, races, cultures, and cognitive profiles, believing in
the Episcopal tradition that we find God in and through each other’s presence. With small classes,
individualized curricula, and extended school days, we provide rigorous academic, moral and social
instruction. In close partnership with families, we are an innovative learning community that affords
structured support to help students thrive.” The offered education is 5th-8th grade. No formal ESL or
ELD program, but refugee and English Language Learners have been welcomed, supported, and
successful at this school.

An extension of refugee resettlement services, CENTER is a new program of Lutheran Social Services of
the Southwest working in affiliation with Refugee Focus that serves the greater Tucson community of

The METRO Goodwill® Youth Program serves youth ages 14-24 years who were in the juvenile justice

Goodwill GoodFutures Youth Program
Goodwill’s GoodFutures Program is a training and service-learning program for Southern Arizona’s young
adults. The program works with ages 18 through 21 who are interested in real world work experience,

Horizons for Refugee Families Tutoring
Horizons for Refugee Families helps children that are enrolled in school by providing them with tutoring.
They offer one on one, mentoring, and group tutoring. Tutoring is available at Doolen Middle School,
Catalina Magnet High School, Mayfair Manor Apartments, and Monte Vista Apartment Complex.
Transportation is not provided and many languages are spoken.

A nonprofit arts and education organization dedicated to participatory community arts with an emphasis

language services provider in Southern Arizona.ALTS’s goal is to make sure its customers arrive at their
