Our Donors Welcome Each year, the USO of Illinois provides unwavering comfort and care for 330,000 military members and their families. With extensive programs reaching all members of the military family, and centers specially designed to feel like a “home away from home,” we are honored to be a premier support system, trusted resource and the bridge connecting service members to their local communities, in times of peace and war. USO of Illinois Beginnings The United Service Organizations (USO) was founded on February 4, 1941 and created from six service associations - the YMCA, YWCA, National Catholic Community Service, National Jewish Welfare Board, Salvation Army, and National Traveler’s Aid Association - to lift the morale of our military and nourish support from the homefront. Six short months later, the precursor to today’s USO of Illinois was launched. The Chicago Servicemen’s Center opened on August 7, 1941. Though operated by the City of Chicago, the center was supported inside the Elk’s building at 178 W. Washington St., in downtown Chicago. In April and May 1942, Chicago opened three clubs at the Illinois Central Railroad Terminal, the historic Union Station, and 131 South Wabash. During the summer of 1942, the Serviceman’s Center in Lincoln Park was opened to create a full-service beach resort for military members. All USO clubs and centers were closed with the end of the war in 1947 but were quickly recommissioned in 1948 at the beginning of the Korean War. Throughout the next 65 years, the USO of Illinois would continue to thrive, opening new center locations to support the nation’s military. For the USO of Illinois, this immense growth marked a 10% increase in numbers served and the revenues required to meet the needs of 30,000 more people. It is my pleasure to also share that the USO of Illinois has received the highest rankings of 4 stars from Charity Navigator, the independent charity evaluator, as well as 6 stars from USO Inc.’s Charter rating system. Operating as a lean organization with nearly half of all support being received in-kind, this sustained growth would not have been possible without the passion and dedication of the more than 660 volunteers who work tirelessly and the immense generosity of our donors. Whether spending an evening together as a family at a Blackhawks game with donated tickets, taking advantage of the care and comfort provided at one of five centers in Illinois, or reconnecting with family at USO Camp R&R for a week after a parent returns from deployment, local military continue to rely on the USO of Illinois as a premier provider of quality programming. President John F. Kennedy once said, “a nation reveals itself not only by the men it produces, but also by the men it honors.” As we share our 2015 Annual Report and begin the 2016 celebration of 75 years of USO programs that honor our military, we want to take this moment and thank the many who donated tickets, food, rent, services, cash and time to make this all possible. We appreciate your commitment to the USO of Illinois’ mission to serve our U.S. Armed Forces and look forward to celebrating our birthday with you! Pat Sanders 2015 - 2016 Chairman of the Board USO of Illinois USO of Illinois 2015 Annual Report 5 Letter from the President and CEO 1941 was a remarkable year in our nation’s history for many reasons, but for the USO, it signaled a beginning. World War II was raging, and as America entered the fight, President Franklin D. Roosevelt realized that our service members needed to feel the support of the homefront to remain resilient in the face of grave dangers. He empowered Congress to charter an organization supported solely by the American people for the very purpose of connecting our service members to the things they love—family, home and country. That organization was the United Service Organizations (USO) and the rest, as they say, is history. As we close the chapter on 2015, we are excited to celebrate 75 years of supporting America’s service members and their families. The USO of Illinois enters 2016 with strong momentum, continuing to provide care, comfort and connection to more than 330,000 military and military family members, annually, throughout Illinois. Our core mission of service delivery through our USO Centers, morale and recreation support through Military and Military Family programs, and best-in-class Community Connections programs ensure that we remain connected to the needs of our military community--even as those needs may shift. But we keep pace, thanks to the generous support of our donors and the vital assistance of hundreds of dedicated USO volunteers who help sustain our programs and services, 365/24/7. Thank you for helping us remain ’always be their side!’ This year, while we look back and reflect in celebration, we look forward with excitement and rededicate ourselves to the USO’s mission of making a difference in the lives of those who selflessly serve in our nation’s Armed Forces. In honor and support of our brave service members and their families, here’s to another 75 years of the USO! While deployed, the USO of Illinois not only supports them but also their families on the homefront through a variety of programs. Homecoming Moments of great joy and relief, homecomings are the hallmark of a service member’s return home. The USO of Illinois joins with friends and families to welcome their loved ones home and thank them for their service. Reintegration Life in a combat zone is very different from life on the homefront. The USO of Illinois recognizes the challenges our military face as they transition back into their civilian communities after multiple deployments, often carrying with them visible and invisible wounds of war. As they and their families adjust, the USO of Illinois is there providing programs that directly address their needs and support paths to resiliency. USO Discovery Kids offers free, recreational and cultural programs and events that are fun, educational and designed to help alleviate stress, enhance exposure to learning and cultural activities and build bonds within military family communities. USO Teen/Tween Programs Besides the normal challenges of adolescence that every American teen and tween navigates, military teens face the unique challenges of a military lifestyle, including frequent moves, making new friends in new places, and separation from parents, caregivers and family members who are training or deployed. A new extension of our USO Discovery Kids programming, USO Teen/Tween Programs provide social, recreational and educational opportunities, tailored to the blossoming minds and imaginations of this vulnerable adolescent population. Military Family Days Maintaining resiliency and a connection to community are vital to the well being of our military. USO of Illinois provides recreational support and a connection to resources that enhance Military Unit Family Day gatherings throughout Illinois. USO Camp R&R Helping military families rebuild bonds, the USO of Illinois offers military personnel recently returned from deployment, and their families, a weeklong stay at a special summer camp so they may rest, relax and reconnect. USO Thanksgiving Day and December holiday support includes meal and gift assistance for families in need, as well as 24-hour USO Center support at USO Midway and USO O’Hare as military make their way home on holiday leave. USO Support for Families of the Fallen USO O’Hare and USO Midway staff and volunteers offer assistance and consolation to grieving families during their travels to and from Dover Air Force Base to witness the dignified transfer of their fallen heroes. The USO of Illinois acts as the on-site liaison between military branches and these families, providing comfort and travel assistance during this difficult time. Gold Star Family Support The men and women who have served our nation and made the ultimate sacrifice deserve our eternal gratitude and highest honor. Their families, who served with them from the homefront, and lost their loved ones in combat, are our Gold Star Families. The USO of Illinois supports these families at several annual events throughout the year, including Mother’s Day and the Chicago Memorial Day Parade. USO Discovery Kids visit the Chicago Botanic Gardens for a day of educational and recreational programming. 14 USO of Illinois 2015 Annual Report Community Connection Programs USO No-Dough Dinners This year-round program, offered at USO Great Lakes, provides the civilian community a chance to express their appreciation by supporting homestyle dinner events that offer free meals the evening before payday to service members and their families. USO of Illinois 2015 Annual Report 19 Donor and volunteer Highlights Bridgeview Bank Mortgage Company Chicago Automobile Trade Association Rod & Claire Stiles Since its founding in 1971, Bridgeview Bank Mortgage Company (BBMC) has worked to improve the quality of life for the active duty military personnel and veteran communities across the country. Which is why when BBMC asked to talk about partnering through their Patriot’s Charity Initiative (PCI), the answer was obvious for the USO of Illinois. The goal of PCI is to raise awareness of and distribute funds to a handful of charities that serve the military and veteran populations, including the USO of Illinois. The Initiative works by giving every new loan purchaser the opportunity to pick between 4 charities to whom BBMC will donate $150 for every closed loan. Not only has BBMC given its clients the chance to help support the USO of Illinois, but its staff have gotten in on the action by regularly volunteering at USO events. From walking with the USO of Illinois during Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade and honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice to helping serve sailors at USO Great Lakes a free hot meal the night before payday, BBMC staff and the company, as a whole, have truly embraced this partnership. “At BBMC Mortgage, we have several employees that were service members at one point in their lives,” says Todd Jones, President of Retail Mortgage at BBMC. “We see this Patriot’s Charity Initiative program as a way to thank our troops and their families for the sacrifices they have had to endure while protecting the freedoms we all enjoy.” BBMC Mortgage’s Patriot Charity Initiative raised $64,800 during its first year, and we are looking forward to growing the partnership for our military and military families in Illinois. Three years ago, the USO of Illinois began a partnership with the Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA) around an initiative, Barbeque for the Troops (BBQ), designed to encourage local support for USO programs through backyard BBQs. Upon learning about the initiative, the CATA immediately decided to get involved, asking who better to rally people than those local new car dealerships who are already deeply rooted in their communities striving to make a difference. More than 70 Chicagoland new car dealers hosted BBQs in the first year, raising $37,500 in one day. These dealerships set the bar high and got creative. Dealerships across the Chicagoland area sported bouncy huts and live bands. They roasted whole pigs and honored the military with 21-gun salutes. They invited and entertained thousands of guests and offered them the chance to donate and support our military. And it worked. Over the next two years, approximately 70 dealers would participate in BBQ for the Troops each year, but the amount raised kept growing. In 2014, the CATA and local dealerships succeeded in raising $90,000 for USO of Illinois programs. And in 2015, they set the bar even higher by offering patrons an opportunity to donate any loose change left in their vehicles while getting service done on their cars for the entire month of July. And again, their effort paid off as they raised $131,000 in one month. The CATA and local Chicagoland new car dealers have generously decided to continue their efforts for another year. Look for dealers in your neighborhood hosting BBQs on Saturday, July 16 this year and stop in and thank them for their support of our military! The USO of Illinois is fortunate to have a foundation of dedicated volunteers including two, very special USO Volunteers who epitomize commitment to the USO mission: Rod and Claire Stiles. Each summer, for nine years, Rod and Claire have dedicated a week at USO’s Camp R&R, filling the vital role of USO camp “concierge.” As the program celebrates 10 years of helping recently deployed service members and their families reconnect, rest and rebuild bonds, USO Camp R&R is a one-of-a-kind retreat that requires a special kind of facilitation. “Rod and Claire provide a warm reception, and act as engaging daily directors of camp activities while responding personally to the special needs of the families with compassion and kindness,” Program Director, David Darroch, said. After finishing his career in the Navy at Naval Station Great Lakes, Rod joined the USO of Illinois team where he worked as Great Lakes Center Director, and later Programs Director, for seven years. Commitment like theirs is part of what makes the USO of Illinois a pillar in the military community. “Looking back, we feel fortunate to have served in the U.S. Navy (1980-2001), fortunate to have served with Team USO, and fortunate to have been given the opportunity to serve as USO Volunteers each summer at Camp R&R,” said the Stiles. “As USO Volunteers, we are empowered to carry the heartfelt thanks of a grateful nation and personally deliver it to men and women defending freedom. We continue to volunteer because we are grateful for what the USO has done for us and for those who continue to serve in the military.” 2015 Revenue and Expenses The USO of Illinois is dedicated to excellence and continues to provide best-in-class programs and services to our troops and their families while growing revenues and controlling expenses. Volunteers serve in multiple capacities and are an essential part of keeping all five USO of Illinois Centers open for business. The USO of Illinois relies on more than 660 active volunteers who annually donate enough hours to equal more than $1,200,000 of service. Our volunteers are trained thoroughly, and work closely with staff to ensure high standards of service provision.
