Oakwood Common.
One of a kind, like you.
By: Elizabeth Goch, president
Are you one of those who enjoy the winter cold and shoveling snow? Maybe you enjoy
digging out the driveway again after the snowplow came through? Did a power outage
leave you in the dark and cold? Are you feeling run down after a bout of the flu because
you didn’t get a chance to get your flu shot? The residents at Oakwood Common were
offered the flu shot in the comfort of our community and the heated underground parking
eliminated digging out their car after snowstorms. Transportation to church, area
shopping, or special events (without the need to hunt for a parking space) made winter
outings very accessible and generators make sure common areas are lit, warm, and our
kitchen functional.
Wouldn’t you rather leave winter behind and take advantage of the spring gardening
catalogues arriving in the mail since it is time to plan your garden? Do you enjoy a cut
flower garden? The lovely flowers in the resident gardens offered a colorful display this
past summer. Last year, tomatoes and corn seemed to dominate the vegetable growers
with one gardener focused on pumpkins and sunflowers. The display looked beautiful in
the autumn as leaves changed color. Even balconies and patios had planters and
hanging baskets overflowing with flowers or cooking herbs.
Since the resident gardens are located adjacent to a gazebo overlooking the wetlands,
other residents can enjoy the colorful display without necessarily digging in. The wetlands
are seeded with natural wildflowers, so beauty surrounds those who wish to enjoy a
moment of serenity or watch the blue heron at his nightly fishing foray. The Japanese garden gazebo with fountains and ponds also offers a quiet spot to relax or sit with friends.
Do you have time for a cup of coffee and a chat? Please take a moment to visit Oakwood
Common and see for yourself. I think you will find that we are one of a kind, like you.

Tips for selling your home
Residents take advantage
of parking garage!
Many times Oakwood Common residents are asked why they
chose Oakwood Common as their new home. Besides hearing
the usual answers such as the beautiful grounds, excellent
reputation, size of apartments, friendly home like environment,
activities and amenities offered, many choose Oakwood
Common because of the underground parking available. Many
residents tell us “having a garage to park your car in is truly an
asset if you live in Michigan. I was shocked to learn this amenity
was available. I take advantage of the garage during the winter
months when the weather is unpredictable. I protect my car and myself
from the elements. In the summer I park in a lot that is close to my apartment.” The
marketing office hears continually that having underground parking is “the best kept secret
out there!”
Are you interested in Oakwood Common, but worried about selling your
home? Maybe you are anxious about who you can trust to sell your home
at the best price or perhaps you are overwhelmed with the whole process.
Well, you are not alone and we have great news for you! With spring right
around the corner, Oakwood Common will be hosting a complimentary
brunch, free tour and an informational session with a leading area realtor
who can provide the advice you need to help you sell your home.
Join us from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on April 10 in the dining room of Oakwood
Common for a complimentary brunch and get free advice and help from
area realtor, Allison Fishwick
Recognized nationally by National Real Estate and Relocation Magazine in
1999 and 2000 and by REALTOR Magazine in 2001 and 2002 for her
outstanding accomplishments in real estate, Allison is considered a
source of expertise both locally and nationally. Fittingly describe by
National Real Estate and Relocation Magazine in 2000 “as recognizable
as the mayor” in her market.
Allison will be on hand to share her “Selling Tips” to get your home sold
faster! Our speaker will offer her expertise and then open the floor to
answer any questions you may have.

The
I
nside Perspective
by George Stevens
I moved here in June of 2007. I made my
decision when I realized I no longer wanted to
go up and down the stairs, shovel snow or
maintain a home.
I shopped around at other communities before I
came here. I liked it here the best. The others
were too large; Oakwood Common was cozy
and made me feel more at home.
I used to be a Ham Amateur Radio Operator
and have communicated with over 300
countries. I also worked for 40 years for
Michigan Bell Telephone Co. I am currently a
volunteer at Oakwood Hospital and Medical
Center in Dearborn where I work about 20
hours a week. I drive myself and the commute
is very easy, especially with the underground
parking garage. It is wonderful here and I
would recommend it to everyone.
The food here is one of my other favorites. I
usually eat in the English Café for breakfast
and lunch. On the weekends I eat in the dining
room with my daughter Sally. She also loves
the food here at Oakwood Common.
My favorite pass time is reading and working
on the computer. I play Euchre on the Internet
with a friend in Australia. The library here is
full of lots of mystery books and it is a
challenge trying to get through them all.
I also love sitting on my balcony and feeding
the squirrels. I have a wonderful view of the
wetlands and really look forward to spending
time there in the summer.
I love living at Oakwood Common, sometimes
I ask myself why I didn’t move here sooner, this
is where I belong.
