President’s Message:
by Simon Cooper
A
s I am writing this, I have finally gotten used
to putting 2014 on letters and contracts. It’s
only taken me two months, so I am doing
well this year. Speaking of letters and contracts,
the Boston Chapter’s team of event coordinators has been extremely busy
in the off season getting our 2014 calendar up and running. There will
be new events, new tracks and a lot of variety for everyone. Each year
though, we face increased competition for our club events from commercial, for profit enterprises; and we continue to evolve to meet these
challenges.
The club puts great focus on safety and education for our driving
events, but we also make sure that we maintain the sense of fun that
brings members back every year – and we’re proud of our accomplishments. Our members are our customers after all, so we hope you agree
that we have a great product and you return to support this year’s
chapter events. Whether you’re into track events, autocross, fun rallies,
karting, concourse or any of our numerous Chapter events, make sure
you have them on your calendar to attend in 2014.
The Boston chapter is the 3rd largest chapter of the BMW CCA with just
over 3,300 members. The DC Capital chapter is the largest with around 5,200
members and then Golden Gate with 3,700. Los Angeles trails Boston with
2,700, so you can see we have a curiously large base of BMW fans and club
members for a relatively small geographic area. That being said we are always
looking for new people and new ideas, so when attending an event this year,
be sure to bring a friend. While we can’t please everyone, we would like to
grow our membership and invite you to recruit your friends and like-minded
individuals to join and participate in our events, even if they don’t own a
BMW (at least not yet).
As president of the Chapter and an event coordinator, it is important to me
that we maintain and improve the quality and variety of our events. When we
have a strong program and roster of events, members stay involved because
they not only enjoy the events, but also the personnel and interaction with
fellow members. When the board is doing their job right, members tell us they
have a compelling reason to renew their membership each year because the
$48 fee is well worth the benefits. While it is no small sum these days, for less
than a ticket to one Red Sox game you get a whole year of entertainment, fun,
excitement, and yes, discounts too.
In a roundabout way, what I am trying to say is that although we are already one of the largest Chapters, the Boston BMW CCA is always looking
for opportunities to do something different to attract new members or keep
existing members involved in the club. If you have an idea for an event or a
way to make an existing event better, send me a note and we will see if we
can make it work.
I am looking forward to 2014, and I hope you are too! We have some new
events and venues. We are going to Canada and upstate NY again this year,
but we are also helping to re-open an historic New England race track in Connecticut. With all this going on, how can you resist signing up for a Boston
Chapter event? Please do and then … tell a friend, pass it on. ♦

Spring Historical Fun Rally
Saturday, May 17th at 10 a.m.
Eduardo & Marcy have arranged a new Fun Rally route called
Historical Fun Rally (not hysterical Fun Rally) that will take participants through Newton, Concord and Lexington. The rally route is
rich with battlegrounds, historic buildings, walking trails and more.
We’ll meet at the rest area in Newton (by the Charles River & the
Marriott Hotel) before heading out for the rally. Along the route,
you’ll encounter captains, kings, writers and some reverends in the
mix. You will do some walking to Historical homes, antique Pubs
and other buildings of historical influence ending with lunch. We
will have a host of interesting questions and there is sure to be a lot
of good conversations.
This event is limited to 2 people per car and is best maneuvered
with your spouse, significant other or a friend. There will be a drivers meeting at 10 a.m. sharp. We will end the rally at a restaurant
where the answer sheets will be scored and prizes will be awarded
for the top three winners. Register on the Chapters Website www.
boston-bmwcca.org. You have to be a current BMW CCA member
to participate. The $25 registration fee must be paid to the Chapter’s
PayPal account prior to the Event. Cancellations must be made by
Wednesday, May 14 th in order to receive a refund! See you all there!

Membership Spotlight: Introducing Rachel Baker by Audra Tella & Scott Baston
W
hat do you do with a brand new 2008 BMW 135i?
Well, if you are the fabulous Ms. Baker (the new
Membership Chairperson for the Boston Chapter) you join BMW CCA and autocross it. Back in 2008,
this spunky young lady arrived at her first BMW CCA
autocross and quickly became a fixture at the events.
She can be described as friendly and outgoing with a
quirky sense of humor; if you have ever seen her crack
herself up to the point where she has tears running
down her face, you know what I mean. And, just like
her idol, Audrey Hepburn, the fabulous Miss Baker is
our fashion icon, known for being the best-dressed autocrosser on the runways in those amazing hats!
She’s the first to lend a hand
But the thing that most distinguishes her is her willingness to roll up her sleeves and dive in to any task. She is
the first to arrive to greet everyone at the gate and one
of the last leave. Last season we had a car spill some
fluid on the course. Rachel was one of first people to
grab a broom and speedy dri and head out to the mess.
From the very start, she was always on hand to assist with setup and cleanup; in addition to her assigned
corner worker duties. When she became setup crew
chief, she was incredibly organized; packing all of the
autocross gear into the old white BMW van was truly
an exercise in organizational skill.
Her talents have extended far beyond that though.
As registrar she has done an amazing job. As Scott
Baston says “she transformed the registrar position; the
work that several people used to do, she now does entirely herself.” Ensuring accurate registration files is
critical to the success of the events. Rachel’s registration lists are always perfect.
Rachel spends many hours prior to the season start
and prior to every event performing important tasks
that are so necessary for classification, numbering and
event registrations.
She’s always on top of the details
Rachel’s attention to detail is tremendous and seemingly effortless. The registration process for an
autocross can be quite onerous; there are cars that
need to be classed correctly, numbers need to be assigned, and payments to be collected, but Rachel
approaches these processes with both intensity and
joy. She’s always on top of the many moving parts of
the autocross registration process and enjoys bringing
a sense of order to them. 12 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2014
The beautiful and stylish Rachel Baker
on the track (above) and at the annual
Autocross awards ceremony.
As the autocross registrar, Rachel is the first person
that everyone sees on the day of
an autocross. She is warm and welcoming, which is
amazing given that she needs to be one of the first people at the event, which means waking up at an ungodly
early time on a weekend. That would be enough to put
even the best of us in a foul mood, but not Rachel. Her
gracious presence and sense of order is the perfect first
impression for participants, many of whom are new to
autocross, and sets the tone for the rest of the event. She’s the ultimate team player
Rachel is a team player; she is selfless and actively looks
to help others and the autocross series as a whole. The
last two years she has volunteered to update the BMW
classing system for the autocross series. This is a structure that is entirely unique to our series and requires
that every new BMW and their many different packages be thoughtfully classified and assigned a certain
number of points, which determines which class each
model is in. In addition, she has to incorporate classing
for all the many non-BMWs that participate in BMW
autocross events. This is such a time-consuming task.
She does it so well I have become convinced that she
has managed to memorize the tome that is the SCCA
Rules book. Now THAT is dedication! Yet she seems
to do it happily.
Her contributions extend well beyond her registration duties. She has spent many hours with me doing
pre-work for the autocross schools, reviewing sched-
ules, making out wristbands and
pairing instructors and students.
Last year when we found ourselves
a bit short of volunteers for the EVO
School, she dropped everything to
spend the weekend helping to run
the event. Again with the messes,
but on both days she was right there
beside me with 20 bags of kitty litter
and a broom cleaning up a giant oil
slick. And then she stayed long past
all the students leaving to pack up
all the equipment.
This year, Rachel is assuming the
duties of Membership Chair. Her
enthusiasm and dedication for the
brand and the club are infectious
and are sure to make an impact. Expect to see more great things from
the stylish Ms. Baker! ♦
BMW CCA loses long time
member John Bisset
John Bisset was an early member of
BMW CCA and one of the founding
fathers of the Connecticut Valley
Chapter, where he has held about
every position from member-atlarge to president. At one point, in
the lean early years, he and Marsh
Wilson even loaned the Chapter
money to keep it afloat. John was
proud to have been included among
those members from the First 5000
who participated in the Oktoberfest
Anniversary a few years ago. John
and his wife Barbara attended 32
National BMW CCA Oktoberfests
and he drove his 1981 BMW 320i on
nearly all the famous race tracks in
the United States. The club was a
path to wonderful car activities and
a way to make wonderful friends
all across the country. John is survived by his wife Barbara, their 3
sons Colin, Jeffrey, and Jonathan.

You’re starting with a blank slate!
Design a T-shirt and win!
T
he Boston Chapter will be having 6
schools this year at Watkins Glen,
Thompson, NHMS and Mt. Tremblant;
and we wanted to ask our membership to
help design shirts for each of the schools.
The contest is open now, so entries can be
sent immediately! Designs can be pretty
much anything related to the specific track,
region, or BMWs, but we are looking for vibrant and memorable designs that can be used to promote the Boston
Chapter and our driving schools. You can enter as many times as you
like and the contest has no close date. However, remember our first
school is at Watkins Glen in May, and we need final art more than a
month before each event, so plan accordingly. We would love to see
any and all ideas, let the creative juices flow and have fun!
Official Rules for the 2014 Driving Events T-Shirts
• Any T-shirt design used entitles the artist to a $100 credit to a
Boston Chapter BMW CCA driver’s school and a complimentary
t-shirt with the artist’s design — and the envy of their peers.
• The decision of the driving events committee is final.
• The Boston Chapter of the BMW CCA will have the right to reproduce any submitted image on a t-shirt or for any other chapter use.
The artist will retain all other rights.
• The artwork must be presented in electronic form. Vector graphics
are preferred.
• Bitmap graphics will be considered if they have a high enough
resolution to create a quality image in the space described.
• The approximate space available for the art is 10 inches x 9 inches.
• The art must include or have space available to include: the chapter logo, the event track and date, and for the word “Instructor.”
• Because the addition of each color on a silkscreened t-shirt increases the cost, preference will be given to designs that include
the Boston Chapter logo colors and/or are limited to the number
of colors required.
• The Boston Chapter logo colors are the BMW Motorsports colors
which are described as:
Pantone Process Blue (PMS 859) / R:15, G:52, B:129
Pantone Violet (PMS 268) / R:0, G:143, B:219
Pantone Warm Red (PMS 836) / R:200, G:45, B:43
• The back of the shirt is used to display the event sponsors.
• The deadline for submissions for any event is 20 business days
prior to the event.
• Submissions should be sent to: Barry Tarr via the contacts page on
the Boston Chapter website.
• Offer not valid in Alaska and Arkansas.

Member mailbag: Love at first sight and BMW CCA by Daniel Mahoney
Editor’s note: We always encourage members to send us their BMW
stories through the chapter website, and we love sharing them. If
you have a special story, picture or funny anecdote to share log on
to the chapter contact page at http://www.boston-bmwcca.org/officers/default.aspx and click on the link to the editor.
I
remember the first time I saw my 2001 Bmw 325ci
for sale. I think it was love at first sight when I laid
eyes on that Topaz Blue Metallic beauty with the
BMW badge. It was shiny, aggressive looking, and
elegant. Back then, I knew little about cars; and it
wasn't until I joined BMW CCA and started going to
various car meets that I really gained the appreciation I have today for my Ultimate Driving Machine.
I joined in 2011 and I quickly learned more about my
e46. Each time that I'd have a conversation with someone, I learned a great new fact about my car;
in turn, it enhanced my appreciation for
not only my vehicle, but also for all things
BMW.
Before I knew it, I was meeting other
owners on a consistent basis, going home
and looking up what I didn't understand,
asking questions of other members online in forums
and then checking it out on my car. It wasn't long until
I developed an obsession for my: 2.5L straight 6 cylinder, 6-speed sequential manual, 176.7 inches long, 69.2
inches wide, 53.9 inches tall, double vanos E46.
I picked other members' brains for how to do my
own maintenance and repairs. In the beginning of my
ownership I didn't know much. Quite frankly, I didn't
even know how to change the oil. I soon learned not
only how to do my oil, but also how to change my
shocks, how to change my Vanos seals, fuel pump,
coolant system overhaul, control arm bushings, control arms, tie rods, and almost everything.
I would never have gained this knowledge if it
wasn't for being a part of a
car club such as BMW CCA.
I even learned how to professionally detail my car
with a professional buffer. All in all, I must say
I have driven a lot of
different vehicles, but
my heart and love will
always be with BMW;
but more specifically
the E46. Not only did I
gain automotive knowledge,
discounts, and so on from the car
club, I more importantly gained
friends for life. ♦

2013 Boston Chapter Autocross Winners
H
ow do you end a great autocross season?
The same way you end a great autocross
event ... with good food, drinks, and a lot
of trash talk!
This is exactly what happened on December
14, 2013, at the annual autocross series banquet
held at the Aegean restaurant in Framingham.
Novice and veteran autocrossers braved the
snowy conditions to celebrate another exciting season that had some of the tightest trophy
races in recent history.
Class winners received customized Boston
BMW CCA jackets, while runners-up received
Boston BMW CCA embroidered helmet bags.
However, shovels and brushes would have
been more appropriate, as attendees had to dig
themselves out of the snow to get home. Congratulations to the following trophy winners!

Field set for Karting championship
Three exciting rounds anoints 18 qualifiers by Jack Meeker & Tom Rathje, Karting Co-chairs

16 | Boston Bimmer • Winter 2014
ur chapter’s 2013-14 indoor karting season began
last November with the first of 3 qualifying
rounds at F1 Boston in Braintree, MA. The top
6 finishers at each of the qualifiers advanced to the
club championship joint-track final race, also at the F1
Boston indoor facility, on April 6.
Although the field of 19 club members who assembled for our first qualifier on November 17 th was
slightly smaller than we’ve seen at some of our past
karting events, the action on the track lived up to its
usual high intensity. From the outset, Tom Lydon
showed he will be the man to beat this season. Lydon
romped to wins in all five of his first qualifying round
heats, also claiming the fast lap time in each of those
races. The top 10 fastest racers, based on average quick
lap times (vs. actual finishing positions), advanced to
the main, with Lydon on the pole. The 11 th and final
feature starting position went to Dave Rissin, by virtue of his winning the consolation race.
Lydon raced away from the front to a relatively easy
win in the feature, winning by a whopping 9 second
(nearly ½ lap) margin over runner up Russ Siggelkoe.
Following Siggelkoe in 3 rd through sixth, thus also
advancing to the championship event in April, were
Ralph Zajac, Oswaldo Hernandez, Dave Rissin, and
Jack Meeker.
Attendance builds at second event
The second qualifying event on January 26 th saw a
larger group, this time 25 club racers, take to the tricky
F1 City Course. Again Lydon blistered the field, sitting
on the pole for the days feature for the second time in
a row. Lydon proceeded to drive to a second straight
feature win, although this time the winning margin
was considerably smaller, as Nick DeRosa trailed in
second by only 2.6 seconds. Meeker came home 3rd,
Neal Heffron finished 4th, Pete Rokel was fifth, and
Sigglkoe had yet another solid finish with a 6th.
Since Lydon, Meeker, Siggelkoe and Zajac (who finished 9th) had already advanced to the championship
event, transfer spots to the finals went to DeRosa, Heffron, Rokel, 7th place Pat Madigan, 8th place Christian
Iantosca (who had earned his feature starting spot with
a consolation race win), and 10 th place Terry Watson.
Six spots left
The final six, championship final starting spots were
now set to be determined, as 28 racers gathered for
the 3rd and final karting qualifier on March 2 nd. To no
ones surprise, Lydon again led the field, picking up
yet another feature win, this time by .4 seconds over
Meeker. Tom Rathje, Chris Hill, Jon Cowen and Iantosca rounded out the top six finishing positions. The
final 6 spots in the club championship race thus went
to Rathje, Hill, Cowen, Kris Kmiecik (who finished
7 th ), Hallan Dornelas (who had won the consolation
race and ended up 10 th in the feature), and 12 th place
finisher Alan Potter.
Join us for our outdoor karting season!
We are also planning two sprint races and a team enduro at the F1 Outdoor kart track in East Bridgewater
later this year. The dates are June 8 th and August 24 th
for the sprints, and September 27 th for the enduro.
These dates, along with race times and registration
information, will be listed in future Boston Bimmer
issues, as well as online at the chapter website at boston-bmwcca.org. ♦

we spent a few days in Berlin.
We stayed right in the heart of the city
at Potsdamer Platz which was within
walking distance of the Brandenberg

We understood for
the first time that
much of the heart
of old Berlin was
in the eastern sector, and how the
wall became a jagged knife through
the heart of the
city. While I did

One last stroll around town
On our last full day in Berlin, we took the bus over to
the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church in the heart of
the city’s west end. The ruins of its tower were left
standing as a vivid reminder of the horrors of war.
Then we decided to stroll down one of Berlin’s famous shopping boulevards - Kurfurstendammstrasse
(Ku’damm to the locals). We were in and out of a
number of boutiques to browse and keep warm when
I saw a BMW logo on the side of the building at the

I won’t venture an opinion on the styling of the i3,

impressed. The thin seats were actually more comfortable than I expected, and there’s “reasonable” space

On Track: Big changes for racing in 2014 by John Oglesby
T
here may still be snow outside the house
even though it is officially spring, but it is
warm inside since the racing season has
started and we are in for a whole new year of
action and adventure. The new Tudor United
Sports Car Championship is underway with
two races in the record book and we’ve witnessed the beginning of a new era in F1 as
well. So we have lots of changes and new
faces and teams to follow during 2014.
The new Formula 1
Even though there is no BMW presence in Formula
1, I can’t write a column on racing without mentioning the changes in the series for 2014. The cars
have new power units, not engines; they are 1.6L V6
Turbos with integrated hybrid electric motors that
provide 200+ additional horsepower. They also have
new aerodynamics and have to get 1/3 better fuel
mileage than last year. The first race in Australia
showed that there is still a lot of maturity that needs
to happen across the field, but it is going to be an
intriguing season!

The new Tudor series
The new Tudor series is assembling the various pieces
of Grand-Am and ALMS into a new series and they
seem to have done a pretty good job getting things
equalized. After Daytona it looked like the GrandAm cars might have an advantage, but the two very
different technologies competed very well at Sebring
where the results came out pretty durn even. I think
that the rules makers should take a bow. It would
only have been better if the Grand-Am car would
have finished second to the ALMS car instead of the
other way around.
On the BMW front, it has started out pretty well.
Although there are no BMW powered prototypes
yet this year in the Tudor series, there are plenty of
BMWs in the other classes. The ex ALMS RLL cars
are running in the GTLM series to the Le Mans rules
and they have been very competitive, but have yet to
score a win. At the Daytona 24 hour race Auberlin/
Hand/Prialux drove the RLL Z4 to 2 nd in class and
7 th overall beating several prototypes to the finish.
The race for the class win was extremely close and
the winning Porsche was on the same lap. The third
place car was 4 laps behind. Turner raced their new
Z4 in the GT Daytona (GTD) class and finished 7th. In
the Continental Tire race BMW M3s dominated with
a 1,2,3,4 finish with the Turner M3 in 3rd. It was a
great race for BMW.
Sebring challenges Turner
Sebring was a challenge for Turner with their car
on the pole for the GTD race and running at the
top for 11 hours before a late wheel issue dropped
them down to 7 th . It was a very impressive race and
bodes well for the rest of the season. The Z4 has had
a historical top speed issue and maybe the teams
are starting to get a handle on the problem. In the
GTLM class, the RLL Z4 was third behind the winning Porsche. In the Continental race BMW finished
2 nd behind the new Camaro.
And now for the British Touring Cars

Across the pond, the British Touring Car Championship gets underway this month and BMW is back with
the West Surrey Racing eBay Motors M135i 2L turbos
with their new paint scheme. The series is looking
very sporty this year with 7 champions contesting the
series including Colin Turkington in the BMW. They
are very optimistic for the year, but the racing will
tell the tale.

Philes’ Forum: E36s transmission-mount upgrades Part 2
– Story and photos by Vic Lucariello
H
mounts are considerably stouter.
See Photo #1, repeated from last
month. A small wrinkle in the
installation of the E21 mounts is
that their studs are 10-mm while
the E36 mounts are 8-mm, necessitating some minor rework,
which I covered last issue.
In preparing Vic Jr.’s ’95 M3 for our recent event at
New Jersey Motorsports Park, we did the power-steering-return-hose modification (described in a document
on the NJ Chapter website). I recommended to Vic that
he also replace what looked like the original E36 trans
mounts (same mounts as the non-M3 cars) with the
E21-mount “upgrade”.
ello, bimmerphiles! In the last regular issue of
the Boston Bimmer, I wrote about an E36 transmission-mount “upgrade.” I’ll talk more abut
that, but first I have a bit of social commentary for
you, just like in the Philes’ Forums of 20+ years ago.
I’m not one to display indiscriminately my thoughts
on political, personal and social topics. If you care to
know my opinion on the national debt, or if I voted for
Parot, ya gotta axe me. As the old saying goes, I would
vigorously defend your right to do so, but you won’t
see me putting any “Vote for Tricky Dick”, “Vote for
the Hump*”, or “I (heart symbol) my Cocker-Pitbull”
bumper stickers on my cars. And, as for those formerly
ubiquitous “Baby on Board!” placards, well, I think you
get where I’m comin’ from.
Now it’s stick figure families
This brings me to a more-recent phenomenon: the little
vinyl-appliqué, stick-figure-family depictions that I’m
sure you have seen, probably on the rear glass of a SUV
or minivan. I suppose these folks want us to know that
they have five kids, two dogs, three cats, seven goldfish
and an antediluvian arthritic albino alpaca. And … that
most certainly is their right.
Returning from a recent trip out West, Joanne and
I stopped for the night in Pennsyltucky. In the hotel
parking lot there was a pickup sporting on its rear glass
a caricature of one of these miniature families (themselves caricatures?). Underneath: “Who Gives a S#it
About Your Stick Figure Family?” We were in a hurry
to get on the road, and the camera was packed, or I
would have a photo for you. Well, I would have tried
to use the camera, but I was laughing pretty darn hard.
Vic Jr. tells me that he has seen “f-bomb” versions that
are even less politically correct than the one Joanne and
I saw! Priceless!
Back to business
Last issue I wrote about how I installed E21 (’77-83
320i) “upgrade” transmission mounts in Joanne’s ’95
E36 325is. The E21 mounts are the same height as the
stock E36 mounts (VERY important on the E36 insofar as fan-radiator clearance is concerned), yet the E21
* Hubert Horatio Humphrey Jr., Nixon’s opponent in 1968

Rogue Engineering mounts
When we went to do the job, Vic produced some mounts
that look just like the E21 mounts, except they have
8-mm studs, so no rework is required to install them
in the E36 chassis. Vic got the mounts from Ben Liaw
over at Rogue Engineering, and they were a breeze to
install. See Photo #2.
A couple days later, whom do I see at New Jersey
Motorsports Park but Ben Liaw! So I got to ask him
about his trans mounts and how they compared with
the E21 mounts and the stock E36 mounts. Ben provided some relative-stiffness data on the E21, E36 and
Rogue transmission mounts:
E21 Mount – Shore A40
E36 Mount – Shore A35
Rogue Mount – Shore A55
The Shore A Scale is used to compare the relative
stiffness of “rubbers” and some “plastics”. The higher
the number, the stiffer the material, and the lesser the
compliance. So you can see that the Rogue mounts are a
bit stiffer than the E21 and E36 mounts, but still, according to both Ben and Vic Jr., suitable for a street-driven
Bimmer. Ben’s mounts are $55 per pair, including hardware, while the E21 mounts list for about $44 each and
can be had for about $30 each. So we’re talking a near
toss-up as far as cost is concerned. However, the labor
charge to install the E21 mounts would be considerably
more than for the Rogue mounts.
I’m cheap, I work cheap (on my own cars, that is)
and I had a couple E21 mounts gathering dust on my
shelf, so I’m happy with the “upgrade” on Joanne’s car.
(Plus I got a good column out of the job.) However, I
think that Ben’s mounts offer a good value and alternative to the E21 mounts. If I had to buy trans mounts for
an E36, I think I would go with Ben’s.
I’d love to hear from you
I would very much like to receive a copy of your vehicle-inspection report. You can either email a scan of
your report (preferred), or simply email the test data.
(Include your name, too, if you want to be famous and
be mentioned in Philes’ Forum!) There is no need to
send in reports of “passed” OBD II inspections (This
is where they scan your car for fault codes.), as these
reports contain no useful information. However, for
failed OBD II tests and for passed or failed OBD I tailpipe tests, there is good info for my database. Please
include both the test results for each pollutant along
with your exact model and year, transmission type, and
mileage. If you know at what mileages your oxygen
sensors and spark plugs were last replaced, include that
as well. For OBDII failures, please include the trouble
codes. Please indicate what, if any, modifications have
been made to your motor (aftermarket “chip” or software, intake, exhaust, etc.). You can obtain copies of
passed OBD I tailpipe tests from the NJMVC website.
Recent reports I’ve received:
Bimmerphile Bill Vanderbeck sent in a report of a tailpipe test on his ’95 VW GTI, with over 200,000 miles
and the original catalytic converter and oxygen sensor.
Bills VeeDub, purchased new and maintained by him,
turned in some incredible numbers: 0.00 % carbon monoxide and 7 ppm unburned hydrocarbons (HC). These
are numbers I usually see from large-catalyst-equipped
M-cars. To put the HC number in perspective, I have
seen ambient auto-shop-air readings of 4 ppm!
Bimmerphile Art Neufeld also sent in an inspection
report, but his ’95 Toyota Corolla failed for a whopping
The photos clockwise, starting from above left:

HC of 342 ppm (max allowed is 220). The Toyo also has
more than 200,000 miles. At press time, Art was still exploring various possibilities for the HC failure, and the
whole story will appear in an upcoming Philes’ Forum.
Quoth Art: “Finally, an interesting one!” Indeed.
Thanks to both Art and Bill for taking the time to
share their results. Anyone wishing to contribute to
Philes’ Forum can contact me at [email protected].
I’m interested in tech tips, repair /maintenance questions, repair horror stories, emissions-inspection sagas,
product evaluations, etc. That’s all for now, bimmerphiles. See you next time. ♦

Saratoga Auto Museum: Remade in America
Features local BMW CCA member’s 2002 Story & photos by Roy Wicklund
I
n the Fall of 2012 I participated in the
Hemmings Fall Car Show on the grounds
of Spa State Park in Saratoga Springs, NY
with my custom ‘72 2002tii. The car was
awarded Best German Car by the Hemmings
judges, but at the same event I was approached by two
gentlemen who introduced themselves as Board members at the Saratoga Auto Museum. They asked if I’d be
interested in having my car displayed in the Museum
for the upcoming BMW exhibit that was scheduled for
Spring thru Fall in 2013. Of course my answer was a
resounding yes, but my participation didn’t come to
pass, because they filled the Exhibit with spectacular
examples sent from BMW GMBH and BMW NA.
However, opportunity came knocking again when I
received an email from the Museum Director about an
event called “Re-Made in America,” planned for the
Winter/Spring of 2014. They wanted me to consider submitting an application for that Event. Well, long story
short, I did, and was fortunate to have my car selected as

one of 13 from
the nearly 100
applications
they received.
In mid-November 2013, I brought the car up to the museum and
later in the month I attended the opening reception of
the “Re-Made in America” exhibit. It was great to spend
the evening talking with other owners and hundreds
of attendees about all the cars ... what vintage BMW
owner doesn’t like waxing poetic about their car! To
say this was a proud moment would be an under-statement – it was very exciting indeed! A friend, looking
at this honor from a practical standpoint, summed it
up best with his comment, “Best winter storage ever!”
A little background on the car
Although the car looks totally “factory,” it is essentially
my version of what a BMW “M2” may have been like,
had the Motorsports Division of BMW existed when the
2002 was in production. I am proud to say that Klaus
Schnitzer (writer and photographer for Roundel, Bimmer, Forza and Sports Car International magazines) has
called the car “the finest 2002 resto-mod in the world!”
I purchased the “virtually rust-free” 1972 BMW 2002
tii body and chassis in New Jersey in 2004, beginning
what would turn into a 4 ½ year frame-off restoration
and radical but subtle customization process. I had the
help and guidance of Vintage Sports and Restoration in
Bow, NH, in completing the project initially, but projects like this are never truly finished and I’ve made
numerous improvements and refinements over the last
five years. I consider it finished now, and all it requires
is routine maintenance. I haven’t come up with any
ideas to improve it lately and don’t want to go over
the top with modifications that don’t look “factory,”
though I do love the new custom sound system that is
nicely integrated and iPod ready, something nobody
had even heard of in 2002.
Since I started with only a body and chassis, I purchased two parts cars for sourcing parts that were
unavailable new. I needed a lot of pieces, as the original
car had no exterior trim, interior, engine, suspension or
exhaust. The car was literally built from scratch and
is a combination of the original body and chassis, the
parts cars and many new parts.
I already owned a complete driveline from a European A.C. Schnitzer built e30M3 – engine, transmission
and differential – and that was used to power this car.
The gearbox is a five-speed Getrag 265 close-ratio unit
with a matching 3.25 differential. A substantial amount
of fabrication was required to fit that driveline and we
had to fabricate a custom driveshaft, half shafts, cooling
What is the “Remade in America” show about?
This is what the organizers had to say:
A
utomobile enthusiasts everywhere are excited by certain cars, trucks and motorcycles
that hit a chord in their souls. Whether it’s a
restored beauty or a rusting hulk, the vehicle triggers memories of the past or a longing to own and
drive that particular vehicle.
More often than not, that desire is suppressed
for years or even decades before the holy trinity
of time, finances and availability come together to
allow the restoration of a rusted truck, the purchase of that “perfect” restored car or the building
from the ground up of a long-envisioned hot rod
or custom.
Results will vary, depending on the enthusiast’s vision, resources and mechanical ability, but
the end products will engender one characteristic
in each and every owner – pride! That pride, in
turn, leads to showing the cars, trucks and motorcycles at car shows near and far, small and large,
sharing their vehicle with others who carry the
“automotive enthusiast gene” as well as the curious passerby. Often a new enthusiast is born from
that curious passerby and the process continues,
to the benefit of all.
“Remade in America” is a celebration of these
enthusiasts and their vehicles, no matter their
origin. All have been lovingly restored, rebuilt or
repurposed and the Saratoga Automobile Museum
is proud to showcase these outstanding vehicles
and the captivating stories of how they came to
their present state.
Some were purchased as they are now, but had
a great deal of work done prior to their acquisition.
The majority, however, represent hours, weeks
and months spent remaking them, part by part,
rusted panel by rusted panel, until they fulfilled
a dream. Each and every one is from the region and a
prime example of what vision, hard work and a
heaping measure of love can produce. ♦

system and exhaust system in order to make it all work
and look like a “factory” original.
The car also has rack and pinion steering and disc
brakes, features that were not offered on the factory
produced 2002 models. The car uses all BMW parts,
mostly 2002 tii, but some items came from different
BMW models. The backseat is from an e24-6 series
and the front seats are from an e21-3 series, for example. That’s why it looks like a BMW factory-built car,
though I did stray a bit with the custom leather-covered
two-piece dash with orange stitching that I had done to
match the orange seat belts.
To the seasoned observer, it does and doesn’t look
like a factory unit, as the addition of Ireland Engineering springs and adjustable front camber plates yielded
a lowered stance along with improved handling. Adding e21 323i trailing arms and related work took care of
the rear suspension. And since the engine had 65,000
miles on it when it was acquired, it was rebuilt as well,
with additions including a new 48 mm throttle body, a
lightweight flywheel, a large-volume carbon-fiber intake manifold, an Alpha-N fuel-management system
and a custom two-piece oil pan. The 2.5 liter engine
now produces about 260 hp, which makes for awesome
performance in a 2300 lb. car. Other obvious changes
included the four-spoke Modular Revolution wheels

with Bridgestone 202/50-15 rubber, Inka (orange)
paint, Turbo wheel flares, rockers and front spoiler and
the rear bumper and valance modifications to let the
custom exhaust system’s twin pipes exit the car with
panache.
Still time to see the show
So, if your travels this Winter or early Spring takes you
to Upstate NY and the Saratoga Springs area, consider
stopping in at the Saratoga Auto Museum and see a
great and diverse exhibit of cars that were “Re-Made
in America.” And, I hope my 2002 Custom puts a smile
on your face too! ♦

Cleaning out the garage: Free to a
good home, rear bumper cover for
BMW Z3 Roadster. Part number
marking of 8 410 736. The cover
appears to be from a Z3 with rear
reflectors (based on the mounting
holes), which would put the vehicle build date between 4/1999 and
6/2002 (2.5 and 3.0 litre engines).
Decent condition, scratches on surface. Mounting holes ok. Will likely
need to be repainted to match your
car. Contact Noam at (781) 8562084, or [email protected]
