1. A rider’s status in other disciplines does not affect their status in Western judged
classes. Any rider that has won a Grand or Reserve Champion twice, or who has a
3.25 point average with 4 or more riders (including combined classes) will advance
to the next highest division. Riders will be notified of their advancement to a higher
division. A rider may voluntarily advance to a higher division, however they may
not return to a lower division at any time in the future.
2. In order to comply with IHA rules, age status is determined as of December first of the previous year. Youth riders are those who have not reached their 18th birthday as of December 1st.
Adult riders are those who have reached their 18th birthday as of December 1st. Proof of age may
be required.
3. Management reserves the right to cancel, combine or divide any class. Classes with less than
three riders will be combined or will be run but no points will be awarded. All class entries will be
closed when the preceding class enters the ring.
4. In order to be eligible for the End-of-Year Awards the rider must be a paid member by the
conclusion of their first show.

SHOW DAY: Check-in begins at approximately 7:30 am. Classes
will begin promptly at 8:30 am. Show grounds are located 1 mile
south of Veteran’s Hwy. & 3 miles north of Sunrise Hwy. Adjacent
to the northeast corner of Connetquot Park
INTERESTS:
*Each rider/horse combination will be given one tag number for the season
to keep records to a minimum. Each rider/horse combination is required to
replace the tag with the same number if lost or misplaced. The tag numbers
are not to be shared or changed during the show season and must be displayed prominently during competition.

ISLIP HORSEMEN’S ASSOCIATION
The Islip Horsemen’s Association is very proud of our
neighborly reputation. It was founded by residents of the Islip
Township but is open to all. The intent of this club is to be
involved with community affairs that affect horse ownership, to
educate horse owners, and to provide a social forum to horse
people.

Monthly meetings, which are open to all, are held at the
Bohemia Recreation Center on Ruzicka Way off Smithtown
Avenue in Bohemia. This year’s meetings are scheduled for the
fourth Tuesday of each month at 7:30 PM. Each month, we try
to have a guest lecturer on horse related subjects. Members
participate in special events, clinics, trips, parades, organized
shows, parties and an end-of-year awards dinner dance. We
have a youth group which holds their own meetings and plans
outings, etc. In addition, we have a drill team called “Spirit of
Long Island” which performs for the public several times yearly.
Our monthly Newsletter contains articles, letters, news, artwork,
and information on the next meeting.

WESTERN DIVISION DESCRIPTIONS
To be eligible for a Division End 0f Year Award, the horse/rider combination must have ridden in
at least 2 out of 3 shows and have ridden in at least three pointed classes in that division for all
shows that are attended. Exception: Leadline riders must have ridden in at least 2 out of 3 shows
and ridden in at least two pointed classes per show attended. Trophies will be awarded to the
overall Grand and Reserve Champion plus ribbons to sixth place. If not enough entries in any
particular division, classes will be combined. Classes with less than three riders will be combined
as best possible or will be run but no points will be awarded.
Leadline Division

Open to riders eight years old and under. Leadline riders may show in this division only.

An intermediate walk/jog division open to riders twelve years of age and under. Buckaroo riders
may show in this division, in hand classes and in Short Stirrup Reining only.

To be judged on grooming, condition and the handler’s ability to maneuver their horse within a
pattern using a halter and lead rope.
Class 12: Buckaroo WP
To be judged on soundness, manners and way of going with emphasis on the
horse as a pleasure mount on a loose rein.
Class 13: Buckaroo WP, Individual Lope
To be judged on soundness, manners and way of going with emphasis on the
horse as a pleasure mount on a loose rein. Riders will be asked to lope individually.
Class 14: Buckaroo Horsemanship
To be judged with emphasis on suitability and the ability to achieve a smooth partnership at the
walk and jog. A pattern may be used in the Horsemanship class at the judge’s discretion
Class 15: Buckaroo Trail
To be judged at a walk over three or more obstacles.
Walk/Jog Youth

Open to beginning youth riders who have not ridden in the higher divisions within the past five
years. They may also enter the in-hand classes and short stirrup reining class if under the age of
13. Riders may ride in the Walk/Jog division for a maximum of two years. They will advance to
the Beginner level after their first year if their point average is 3.25 or higher with 4 or more riders in the class. (If entries are light, the adult and youth Walk/Jog will be combined.)

To be judged on grooming, condition and the handler’s ability to maneuver their horse within a

1. To be eligible for the End-of-Year Awards, you must be a paid member by the conclusion of your first show.

SINGLE CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
To be eligible for a single class End Of Year Award, the rider must have ridden that
class for a minimum of 2 out of 3 shows and the rider must show the same horse
throughout the show season. For exceptions, see the General Information page.
Class 1: Halter
To be judged on the horse’s conformation and soundness.
Class 2: Colorbreed Halter
To be judged on the horse’s conformation and soundness. A horse is considered a Colorbreed
if it is eligible under the rules of a nationally recognized colorbreed association.
Class 7/8: In-Hand Trail & Colorbreed In-Hand Trail
To be judged over a series of natural obstacles at the walk and jog. May include: ground
tying, walking over a bridge, side passing, backing through an L, walking or jogging over
ground poles. Most obstacles you would normally see in an under saddle trail class. A
hoarse can be shown in either a leather halter or rope halter with a standard length lead. No
training aids such as crops or carrot sticks may be used.
Class 15: Short Stirrup Reining
Open to riders age 13 and under. Buckaroo and Walk/Jog Youth riders may enter this class.
Use of two hands and closed reins are allowed. There are no penalties for holding the saddle.
Riders may ride the pattern at a walk, jog or canter. All riders will be judged on their ability
to perform the pattern properly and not on the choice of gait. They will be judged on effort,
ability and form. A spotter may be in the ring while the rider is doing the pattern but may not
assist the rider.
Class 16: Green Reining
Open to riders who has never won money in a reining event. The rider will be judged on the
performance of a full NRHA pattern. The horse may be ridden two handed but only with an
O-ring snaffle bit or bosal. Use of two hands is allowed but the rider may not switch hands or
go from one handed to two handed during a ride. Simple lead changes are allowed and no
break of gait penalty will be applied during the lead change.
Class 17: Rookie Reining
Open to riders who have never won over $100 in a reining event. NRHA patterns will be
used and posted the day of the show.
Class 18: Non-Pro Reining Sponsored by Highwinds Farm
A money jackpot class with 5 or more riders in the class. Open to all amateur riders. NRHA
patterns will be used and posted the day of the show.
Class 19: Open Reining
Sponsored by Highwinds Farm
A money jackpot class with 5 or more riders in the class. Open to all riders including trainers.

2013 GENERAL INFORMATION
1. All of the classes being offered will be conducted and run in accordance with the IHA
Rules and Regulations and the 2013 AQHA Rule Book unless otherwise specified. IHA
rules supersede any other rules. Should a question or dispute arise that is not covered in the
rulebook, the judges’ and show management decisions will be final. A protest, in writing,
must be lodged the day of the show to the show manager or committee chairperson. All
decisions by said person will be final and protests will be answered in writing if necessary.
2. IHA Western Division recognizes both the American Paint Horse Association and the
Empire Quarter Horse Association Competitive Riding Programs.
3. Pre-entries will be accepted by phone or e-mail until 9:00 PM the Friday before the show.
All other forms of entry, such as mail, are the responsibility of the entrant and must be
received by the Friday deadline. When a horse show extends the courtesy of taking an
advanced entry over the phone, it is with the understanding that said entries will be paid
and credit is extended on these terms. If the said entries are not canceled by the deadline
stated above and not paid for, the exhibitor will have their name posted and future IHA and
affiliated organizations may refuse entries until fees are paid. No exhibitor will be
permitted to perform without payment of fees. A $25 handling fee will be assessed for any
returned checks. All checks payable to the Islip Horseman’s Association, Inc. A signature
for all riders, including those of the guardian of junior exhibitors will be required.
4. No refunds will be issued unless a licensed Vet’s certificate of the horse’s unsoundness or
a Doctor’s note of the rider’s inability to perform are submitted. If your horse is unable to
perform and there is a valid Veterinary note, you will be allowed the use of one other horse
under the same number and will be eligible for end-of-year awards. You may revert to
your original horse if he becomes fit or continue with the second horse, but there may be
no other changes. There will be no refunds offered beyond ten days of the show date.
NOTE: There may be no substitutions in Halter or Colorbreed Halter.
5. All participants and spectators enter premises and ride at their own risk. IHA and Suffolk
County Department of Parks disclaim any liability for any accident or occurrence no
matter what the cause.
6. No stallion will be permitted in competition within the IHA at any time. In addition, due to
the dangerous nature of stallions in close proximity to other horses, they are not permitted
on the show grounds or area while the IHA is competing.
7. Management reserves the right to cancel, combine or divide any class. Classes with less
than three riders may be combined. If cancelled, money will be refunded. All class entries
will be closed when the preceding class enters the show ring. A two-minute rule to enter
the ring will be strictly enforced.
8. Classes requiring a pattern will be posted the day of the show.
9. Correct mandatory western attire is required: long-sleeved western shirt, hat, boots. Chaps
are recommended. Riders under the age of 14 must wear an ASTM approved safety helmet
at all times when mounted (NYS law). No refunds will be given for incorrect attire.
10. Horses 5-years-old and younger may be shown in a snaffle bit, hackamore, curb bit, halfbreed or spade bit. Horses 6-years-old and older may only be shown in a curb bit, halfbreed or spade bit. Any horse of any age shown in any novice or lower class may be shown
two handed with a snaffle bit/hackamore. When a curb bit is used, a curb strap or curb
chain is required, but must meet the approval of the judge, be at least one-half inch in
width and lie flat against the jaw of the horse. Curb chains cannot be tied to the bit with
string or cord. A broken strap or chain is not necessarily cause for disqualification.
11. First - sixth place ribbons will be awarded in each class, except reining. Champion and
Reserve will receive an award in each division at the end of the day. Overall End of Day
High Point Grand & Reserve ribbons will be posted & awarded within a week of the show.
12. Amateur Eligibility Rule: A rider is an amateur competitor if they have not received
compensation to show, judge or train within the last five years, whether monetary or
otherwise, either directly or indirectly. If a competitor has received compensation for this,
they are considered a “trainer” and may compete in All Age divisions only. In exception
to this rule is any one involved in therapeutic riding programs.
