Our strong performance

has driven the unprecedented
growth of our West Coast
operation in the US.
Stretching from Seattle to Phoenix,
our West Coast business doubled
revenue to US$10.3m and tripled
its workforce over the past year.
A significant appointment was
Nevin Sood, who relocated from
the UK to join our San Francisco
team. His expertise will enable us
to capitalise on rising demand for
solutions that meet operating cost
savings and sustainability goals
while also delivering excellence
in asset management.
Anooj Oodit

The 250-strong team is
supporting many of the
country’s most complex
major programmes, including
Sydney’s North West Rail Link
and the Ichthys LNG Project
near Darwin.
Anooj Oodit has been
appointed Managing
Director of our Australia
business and will be
responsible for its strategic
direction and growth.
Anooj brings with him 16 years
of experience and recently led
the delivery of some of the
UK’s most prestigious
infrastructure projects for
clients such as Transport for
London, Network Rail and
Anglian Water.
Growing
in China
Our China business posted
strong results last year –
we grew by 17 percent
and expanded our team
by 35 percent – despite
a slowdown in the
country’s economy.
We have now operated in China
for 18 years. Our six offices
are leading major projects for
many global brands – including
Jaguar Land Rover, Mercedes
and Aston Martin – and our
Macau team is playing a pivotal
role in one of the region’s
largest housing projects. In
Hong Kong we are building a
platform for future success on
the back of commissions for
the MTR Corporation and in
support of the new threerunway system at Hong Kong
International Airport.
To support this growth, we have
appointed three new directors
– Derek Moir and Chunzi Yin in
Beijing and Channi Matharu in
Hong Kong.

New Paris base
To support our global client
base we have strengthened
our footprint in France with
a new office in Paris.
We have operated in France since
the late 1990s and the office
increases our ability to both
support the local activities of our
global clients and meet the growing
needs of multinational companies
headquartered in the city.
Director Gaël Lehimas is heading
up the office. He has more than
15 years of experience in the
infrastructure and property
sectors and previously led our
infrastructure project controls
group in London.
Global clients fuel Latin America growth
Our Latin America income
rose by 60 percent and the
team grew to 81 people over
the last 12 months.
Our natural resources group is
advising on mining projects in
Chile with global accounts such
as Anglo American and BHP,
and the world’s largest copper
concentrator in Peru. In oil and
gas, we’re supporting clients in
the new deep-water field
off the Brazilian coast.
Other projects include a range
of investment schemes for two
sovereign wealth funds, cost
management advice for global
high-tech clients, a project
management framework for
one of the world’s largest private
education providers and fit-out
projects for global banks and
international airlines.
To help fuel this growth, we
opened two new offices in
2014. In Brazil, we established
a hub in Rio de Janeiro, and in
Colombia, we opened our
inaugural office in Bogota.
We also made two important
appointments last year with
Jacquelina Dankfort joining as
project management Director
for Brazil and Jonas Nitschack
as natural resources Director.

refurbishment of their
Johannesburg headquarters
is underway.
Set to bring 500 employees
under one roof for the first time
since the firm merged with PKF
in July 2013, the project will
provide an 11,000m2 open-plan
office space located over three
floors, a large communal atrium
and renovations to the exterior
of the building. We have been
appointed to provide project
and cost management services
to the scheme.
When BMW’s latest
showroom opened in
Amsterdam in October
last year it became the
Netherland’s largest
premium showroom.
The 6,000m2 space,
together with a 5,000m2
workshop and 14,000m2
parking area, will showcase
the luxury manufacturer’s
BMW and MINI vehicles as
well as its groundbreaking
electric i-series cars.
As client’s representative, our
role was to monitor progress,
maintain quality and uphold the
BMW brand on this developerled project. Turner & Townsend
Director Martin Vos said:

expansion plans: the initial
three-year phase of a six-year
programme will see it open
new retail units in 48 countries
and across six continents.
Infiniti has appointed us to deliver
the programme, providing
centralised cost, risk and
performance control through a
Hong Kong-based Programme
Management Office (PMO). Our
role overseeing this multi-territory
capital investment programme
requires robust standards and
processes combined with local
knowledge and resources.

He will be leading projects for

Lenovo’s new research and development centre
China
The world’s largest personal
computer vendor Lenovo is
building a 174,000m2 research
and development centre in
Wuhan’s East Lake High-Tech
Development Zone, also known
as China’s “Optics Valley”.
Our role for Lenovo, which is
also the world’s third best-selling
smart phone manufacturer, sees
us providing cost management
services from the design stages
right through to practical
completion in 2017. “Having
worked for Lenovo before, we
understand their goals and vision,
which will help us to deliver this
project to the highest standards,”
said Ben Chaston, Managing
Director for Turner & Townsend,
China. “Wuhan will be Lenovo’s
home front and we look forward
to being part of the legacy it
is creating.”
Housed in two 137m-high tower
blocks and a podium building, the
development will accommodate
conference rooms, a staff
canteen and commercial units
alongside the research and
development facilities.

refurbishment of Sea
Containers House on
the South Bank of the
River Thames.
Using a cost-focused design
process and a robust
commercial approach, the
building was fully let before
practical completion and the
final account was achieved
nine months before completion.
Covering 40,900m2 of grade A
office space, the development
is rated BREEAM ‘Very Good’
and includes a cathedral
reception space, a new ninestorey 8,400m2 office building,
a 359-bed five-star hotel,
a ground-floor café and
roof terraces.

The £40m transformation of
IWM London put the museum
at the heart of centenary
commemorations to mark the
outbreak of the First World
War last year. Timely decisionmaking and a focus on getting
the job done have been central
to the project’s successful
delivery, says Programme
Director Ann Carter.
What was the most
challenging
aspect?
The timescale. The museum was
founded during the First World
War in 1917 and we were very
much focused on delivering new
First World War galleries for the
centenary in 2014. Having started
to work on this in 2011, we
had three years to go from
masterplanning to delivering
a transformed museum.
Q
Designing and fundraising
simultaneously was tough; in
2011 we were still in the grasp
of the financial crisis. We had
a really good team in place and
managed to raise the £40m,
but it was challenging.
What are your secrets
for
success?
Getting people onside and
supporting the project. The
works were very disruptive
and although we closed the
museum to the public for two
periods, staff were working in
it continually.
Q
It’s old-fashioned, but it was all
about talking and communicating.
The enthusiasm and goodwill
of the staff was astonishing.
Decision-making was important
too. The programme would never
have been delivered on time had
the museum not taken the brave
decision to continue at a point
when we did not quite have all
the funding in place. That was
definitely the right decision.
Having the right people in the
right places was vital. The team
was very pragmatic. We all
wanted it to succeed and when
there were hard decisions, people
made them.
What are the outcomes
far?
so
We have delivered an amazing
project. There was a tidal wave of
people when the doors opened in
July 2014. We have just welcomed
our one millionth visitor.
Q
We have had a really good
response from the public. People
have been genuinely interested
and positive about what we have
done, and moved by the stories
in the galleries. The press
response has been outstanding
too: the most coverage we have
ever had.
We wanted to be right at the
centre of the commemorations
for the outbreak of the First
World War and we feel that we
achieved that. Reputationally,
this has been a very positive
project for the museum.
“We all wanted it to succeed and when there
were hard decisions, people made them.”

Generator Hostels’ first
site in the Netherlands.
Situated in a former
University of Amsterdam
building in the heart of the
city, the 566-bed hostel
project’s design takes its
inspiration from the local
Dutch style.
Led by Peter Ferzan, the team
works on projects valued from
US$250,000 to over US$1bn for
brands such as Westin, W,
Sheraton, Marriott, Citizen M,
Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton and
Waldorf Astoria.
As Europe’s fastest-growing
hostel brand, Generator plans
to offer 12,500 beds spread
across 15 European properties
by 2018 – its Amsterdam
hostel will be one of the jewels
in the crown.
In the pre-construction phase,
we will provide cost reviews,
guidance on future consulting
and budgeting needs and
conduct feasibility studies on
renewable energy technology,
to achieve higher levels of
BREEAM certification. During
construction, we will
administer the turnkey
development agreement,
ensure the quality of work and
costs are monitored, manage
change control, and support
the completion phases.

Edinburgh
tram
passenger
milestone
Rail
Trams are now running along
Edinburgh’s streets for the
first time in almost 60 years
after the completion of the
city’s 14km, 15-stop tramline.
It links the airport with the
city centre and delivers an
environmentally friendly, fast
and high-capacity service.
With over three million
passengers since it began,
the service is running ahead
of forecasted journeys and has
a strong record for reliability,
safety and punctuality. Around
2,000 passengers an hour travel
on the eight 140ft-long trams
during peak times.
The project had to overcome
several challenges. The on-street
section through the city centre
required substantial enabling
works before infrastructure
construction and the trams also
had to cope with the steep slopes
of Edinburgh’s streets, to operate
quietly and offer a suitable visual
fit for this World Heritage Site.
Joining the project in autumn
2011 as project managers, our
role was to help the City of
Edinburgh Council deliver the
scheme and provide contract
administration. This meant that we
helped to resolve issues to enable
the permanent infrastructure
works to be delivered.

Steel works milestone
for Midfield Terminal
Building
Abu Dhabi
Due for completion in 2017,
progress on the construction
of Abu Dhabi Airport’s Midfield
Terminal Building (MTB) is
continuing apace. Steel works
on all piers were declared 99
percent complete last month.
The MTB, which will be one of
the world’s largest passenger
terminals, has four piers that
accommodate 65 stands in total.
The longest pier stretches over
500m with all four piers using a
total of 13,300 tonnes of steel.
The building enclosure includes the
glass works for the curtain walling
and roofing works, which will
consume 175,000m2 of glass for
the curtain walling and 260,000m2
of aluminium for the roof.
H.E. Ali Majed Al Mansoori,
Chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports,
recently said: “The MTB is the
cornerstone of a broader plan
to transform Abu Dhabi
International Airport and
accomplish our aim of becoming
a global transportation hub. As
it continues to take shape, with
evidence of progress visible on
a daily basis, the achievement of
that objective draws ever closer.”

Rail
Tottenham Court Road is a
key station on the London
Underground. Crossrail is
working alongside Transport
for London (TfL) on a £1bn
transformation of Tottenham
Court Road Station, the
biggest transport investment
in the UK's capital for decades.
Built over 100 years ago as two
separate tube stations, Tottenham
Court Road was not designed to
cope with the almost 150,000
passenger journeys that are now
made through the station every
day. With the expected rise in
passenger numbers interchanging
between London Underground
services and Crossrail in 2018,
the existing station is being
upgraded to meet demand for
years to come.

The airport is approaching its

eight-year project will include the
formation of 650 hectares of land
north of the existing airport
island, the construction of a new
third runway and related airfield
infrastructure, and the expansion
of the existing Terminal 2.

years, and established many

US aviation market.
Q
What are the key
challenges
facing the
US aviation sector?
The main challenges are
governance and stakeholder
management because most
airports are owned by local
or state agencies, each with
their own procedures for
procurement, planning and
delivery. These different
approaches may affect the
sector’s overall ability to
compete on a global scale.
Funding from federal public
agencies is shrinking and
comes with many conditions
about how it is spent, so
alternative funding models
(such as public-private
partnerships) are getting more
attention. However, raising
money from private sources
means projects undergo

for future challenges, such as
the increased global use of
wide-bodied jets. While the
extra passengers mean higher
profits for airlines, many older
airports don’t have the proper
gate configurations, either
inside the terminal or on the
airfield, or equipment, such
as specialised passenger
loading bridges, to handle

Why is this an exciting
time
for the sector?
US aviation is very dynamic
with major programmes,
challenging funding models,
evolving legislation and
regulations, complex
stakeholder arrangements,
cutting edge technology and
new retail concepts with
airports increasingly looking
like shopping malls. The
deterioration of current
facilities and equipment, and
the global nature of aviation,
mean US airports need to adapt
to compete and increase their
capital spending.

How do you see the
sector
developing
over the next five
to ten years?
The US has 12 of the top 30
busiest airports in the world
by passenger numbers, but
only two of the top 30 by
passenger experience. There is
a huge opportunity to provide
existing and new passengers
with world-class airport and
retail facilities.

Natural resources
Team behind Australia’s largest
thermal coal mine announced
Mining and metals
We have been appointed
by Parsons Brinckerhoff to
provide support services
to the Project Management
Consultant (PMC) team on
the Carmichael coal mine,
port, and rail programme.
Situated in Queensland’s
Galilee Basin and owned by
Adani Mining, the programme
has a forecast capital spend
of up to AUD$16.5bn.
We will provide a suite of
programme support services
to the PMC for the delivery of
the initial phase of works.
The project will build Australia’s
largest thermal coal mine, and
will be linked by a new 388km
standard gauge rail line to a
new export terminal at Abbot
Point Port, near Bowen in
central Queensland.
Over its 60-year lifespan, this
major ‘pit to port’ infrastructure
project will not only support
Adani’s operations, but the rail
line and port facilities have
the potential to assist the
development of other proposed
mines in the Galilee Basin.

of benchmarking
success
Integrity in industry
The Performance Forum,
a unique joint industry
project which establishes
project performance
benchmarks for oil and
gas field developments,
recently commemorated
its 20th anniversary at its
annual conference in London
in September.
The event, attended by delegates
from 25 of the world's major oil
and gas operators, was headlined
by Starlee Sykes, VP projects
performance, BP, who spoke on
how to achieve the competitive
edge in offshore oil and gas
developments. Delegates also
heard speeches from Total, Apache,
ENI, BG Group, Talisman and Shell
along the theme "Project execution
improvement through lessons
learned from benchmarking".
The Performance Forum was
established in 1994, by a small
group of operators who realised
that an ongoing review of cost
performance was essential for the
future of the oil and gas industry.
Since then, its membership has
grown from five operators to 25
of the biggest players in upstream
oil and gas, and the database
includes cost, schedule and
technical data from completed
projects in all of the key producing
regions of the world.
Turner & Townsend manages and
operates the Performance Forum,
which collects data to develop
anonymous benchmarks and
publish independent reports on
project performance. These allow
operator members to assess the
integrity of their cost and schedule
estimates, establish realistic
performance targets and perform
gap analysis versus their peers.
The Forum’s work plays a key role
in identifying and encouraging
best practice, helping to improve
performance across the industry.

Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyr, one

Jay is responsible for managing
all contract aspects for clients
from conception to completion,
providing contract, risk and
procurement advice in Africa.

Taking US
gas global
Freeport LNG – operator of
the world-class liquid natural
gas (LNG) receiving and
regasification terminal
in Freeport, Texas – has
received final approvals
from the U.S. Federal Energy
Regulatory Commission and
the Department of Energy for
its natural gas liquefaction
and LNG export project.
Within the same timeframe,
a Turner & Townsend project
management support services
team played a key role on this
project, supporting the Freeport
LNG team to achieve a positive
final investment decision.
Freeport LNG appointed us as
strategic partners to their project
management team, to apply
expertise and implement
processes, tools and techniques
to reduce the risk of cost and
schedule overruns, and any
associated impact.
With lenders and investors
recognising that major projects
are complex and challenging to
deliver, a managed service
approach was taken to support
crucial aspects of the project and
provide assurance to Freeport
LNG that the complex project
management functions of this
multibillion dollar enterprise are
being managed in a controlled
and integrated manner.

Major contract in Oman’s
oil sector with Orpic
Middle East
Orpic (Oman Oil Refineries and Petroleum Industries
Company), has appointed us to provide contract and senior
contract consultancy support to their business in Oman.
We have been awarded a two-year framework with the potential
to extend for a further 12 months. The team will provide precontract purchasing and procurement support to Orpic.
Orpic is one of Oman’s largest companies, with over 1,600
employees, and refineries in both Muscat and Sohar. It has a
significant capital investment programme with work involving
three major projects over the next four years – a multiproduct
fuels pipeline, the improvement of its Sohar Refinery and the
Liwa Plastics Project.
Kevin Duffield
Director, Middle East
natural resources
Kevin Duffield has joined our Middle East team as Director
of natural resources, bringing 18 years’ experience
working across the property, infrastructure and natural
resources industries in the UK, Middle East and Africa.
Previously Regional Lead for Corporate Real Estate at EC Harris,
he has supported clients such as gas transporter Transco Plc,
TAQA, Halliburton, and multinational corporations Microsoft
and IBM.
Commenting on his appointment, Kevin Duffield said: “I am
excited about the opportunity to provide input into the strategy
and direction of Turner & Townsend’s natural resources team,
driving growth and enhancing our share of the market.
“Natural resources companies are reshaping their assets and

construction industry, Pamela
joined Turner & Townsend
Larkspur in 2013 as a project

Business, the Canberra office
decreased its waste to landfill
by 92 percent between January

Inspiring the next generation
One million young people in
the UK are not in education,
employment or training.
Meanwhile, industry is
experiencing a talent crunch
– a serious shortage of
people entering the built
environment professions.
To help tackle these challenges,
we have adopted Marden High
School in North Shields – the first
school in the North East of
England to introduce an industrysupported qualification called
Design Engineer Construct onto
its education curriculum.
We will support teachers and
students at the school as they
work their way through an
accredited curriculum to design
a virtual eco-classroom. During
this project, students will learn
about the roles within a project
team, sustainable design,
architecture, project management
and procurement, and building
information modelling, a discipline
that we specialise in. Students
will also attend site visits to our
projects in the region.

February saw construction
of a new children’s hospice
begin – only the third of its
kind in Australia. A joint
initiative between Queensland
Kids and Wesley Mission
Brisbane, Hummingbird
House will provide worldclass paediatric palliative
care and respite support to
Queensland families living
with children affected by
life-limiting conditions.

Wishes come true
in The Netherlands
Our team in the Netherlands
recently supported the
Make-A-Wish Foundation in
fulfilling the wishes of two
children with life threatening
medical conditions. Twentyfive volunteers completed
two unique projects, to
make the wishes of two
boys, aged five and eight,
come true. One of the boys
requested a special ride on
race circuit to bring to life
the Disney animation Cars,
while the older boy wished
to feature in his
own action movie.
Our two teams were responsible
for organising every detail, from
ordering a cake, arranging a film
studio, getting ninja costumes,
and securing a red carpet movie
premiere. The team also used
their professional and personal
networks to raise funds to
support the initiative. As a result
of their efforts, the boys’ wishes
were fulfilled and they enjoyed
a unique day shared with
their families.
With eight bedrooms and five
family accommodation units,
Hummingbird House will offer
24-hour medical care, end-of-life
care and respite support for
more than 3,700 families. We are
providing full pro bono project
management services for the
design and delivery of the
hospice on Brisbane’s northside.
“We are proud to be contributing
to this vital facility which will
affect so many people’s lives
in Queensland,” said Turner
& Townsend Chief Executive
Officer Vincent Clancy.
The state-of-the-art home
will have a heated indoor
pool, wheelchair access, an
outdoor tree house and swing,
orchard and sensory garden.
Construction is due to complete
by the end of 2015.
