In the first Baker-style match of the stairstep finals, Gene Rivers, Larry Kassner and Chris Watson defeated Jerry Beavers, Robert Lawrence, and Adam Martinez 226-202. They then put down Roger West, Joe Vito and Matt Cabanski 223-213 before falling to Randy and crew 225-189. In the title match, Eric had to strike out to force (Dave Dupont, Paul Houston) Joe Brock to strike out for the win. Eric got the first two and Joe struck in the 10th. In the 11th, needing a strike for the win, Joe threw a great shot, but hung a solid 7 and lost 203-194. It was Randy’s 6th SASBA title and Mark’s 3rd. Thanks to Bob Bruce for hosting. The food at the snack bar is great and bowling on real wood is still different than bowling on synthetics. Continued on Page 7 Just Paying Attention By Mark London [email protected] This truly wasn’t what I had in mind for the 100th JPA in TBN, but as the classic saying goes, life is what happens when you are busy making plans. One of the fondest memories of my mom was when we watched a baseball game. In the era of her Pirates, similar to the last twenty years until last season, they were just awful. Watching Sunday afternoon doubleheaders from the third base bleachers at Forbes Field featured her favorites, slugging left fielder Ralph Kiner and first baseman Wally Westlake. She even remembered the second string catcher often in the lineup late in the second game of those doubleheaders, Joe Garagiola. She spoke of the hard candy she and her older brother Sam would sneak in, not only because it tasted good, but because it lasted longer in the hot sun, due to the heat bouncing off forty-year old concrete. Her younger sister, Bea, went to a couple of doubleheaders, but decided baseball wasn’t for her. My grandfather would bring in a case of beer, as was the custom at that time. The ballpark didn’t sell beer in those days, so it was BYOB. Now back to that Friday afternoon thirty-five years ago. Xeno Garcia Next Match Play tour nament will be in Feb 2015. International Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame Announces online auction Monthly Sale to Include Bowling and other Sports Memorabilia ARLINGTON — The International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame (IBMHOF) announced the launch of its new online Bowling Museum Store where it will hold monthly auctions of bowling and other sports memorabilia. Proceeds from sales will benefit IBMHOF in its mission to preserve the history of bowling. The IBMHF plans to rotate items up for sale on a monthly basis, giving shoppers a new set of items on which to bid. "It is only through the generous support of our patrons that the International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame is Due to a teacher in-service day, the high school was out, but not the middle or elementary schools where my brother and sister attended. Mom had this wild idea about stopping at the store for what she called ‘ballpark food’. As a high school senior, it was one of the greatest food menus I had ever heard. Hot dogs, potato chips, pizza, popcorn, and Cracker Jack. That pretty much hit all the food groups, yeah, at least according to a yinzer teenager. The game was supposed to start at 3:00 local time, but was delayed by rain. My only concern was how close it would cut into the Galesburg-Moline high school football game at 7:30. Being a sports editor of the yearbook, I had to be there, but since there was something special to this Virginia London particular game, I didn’t see a problem arriving a little after kickoff. It wasn’t like I was writing a story for the Saturday morning edition of the local paper. Mom had an extra spring in her step, almost going at double speed in preparing the feast. Even after the rain delay, everything was ready around the first pitch. Food was laid out on the kitchen counter buffet-style, and now it was time to enjoy the game. It was one of those days when everything tasted a little better than usual. Not only for the food, but for the company, the kind you remember, even thirty-five years later. Our Buccos scored quick runs in the first and second innings, making it 2-0. Solo homers by Willie Stargell, Bill Madlock, then a two-run double by Stargell pretty much ended the game at that point in the fourth inning. In other USBC Collegiate action over the weekend: - At the Southwestern Intercollegiate Bowling Conference #1 in Amarillo, Texas, Texas A&M rolled to the top spot in the men's and women's divisions. - At the Green River Classic in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the Pikeville women and Lindenwood-Belleville came away with victories. - At the Wisconsin Collegiate Bowling Conference #1 in Minneapolis, the WisconsinWhitewater men and Wisconsin-Milwaukee women picked up easy wins. - At the Ball State Cardinal Classic in Munice, Indiana, the Wright State men and women pulled off the sweep to take the titles. Random Thoughts Tony Franklin, Publisher I want to make a quick clarifying point about a line I put in last week’s column. Last week I wrote about the USBC, with the following: “The real kicker is that the vast majority of the people that work at USBC are so incredibly passionate about bowling. They live it, breathe it, and work it, or at least they used to.” What I meant to imply was that they used to work there, not that they used to care. That was in response to recent staff reductions. I may be in the minority here, but I don’t feel there is any denying that those that work at the USBC or BPAA are incredibly passionate about bowling. They are at the forefront in the positive promotion of bowling, and I applaud them for that. Passionate employees are a strength of theirs, and will hopefully remain so. That is my greater concern for the organization…losing those employees that have the greatest enthusiasm for the long-term health of bowling. x-x-x-x-x-x Our thoughts and prayers have been with Mark London and his family this week as his mother Virginia, 75, passed away unexpectedly. Mark traveled home to the Pittsburgh to be with the family and share their final respects. Make sure to read his column this week as he pays a wonderful tribute to his mom. x-x-x-x-x-x My favorite weekend of the year has now come and gone… The annual Wichita Swiss tournament. We had a minor team change this year as we subbed in Frisco Doug Rice for Chris Greene who is coming off of back surgery. Derek Hartnell was our anchor as always. It was our best performance to date as we finished in 4th, just a couple of points behind the winners. The tournament for us is focused on fun and not really about the performance; even though we are giving it everything we have, it’s really about the camaraderie and not the strikes and spares. Bowling is so much more fun, when I focus on the fun. The Swiss tournament remains one of the most social, big action tournaments around, and I hope it never changes. The Urbana men and Wright State women led qualifying and went on to win the titles at the UNOC Racers Kickoff Classic at Westgate Lanes in Lima, Ohio, from Sept. 20-21 as the United States Bowling Congress Collegiate season kicked off. Urbana defeated Saginaw Valley State, 392-275, in the championship match to take the men's title after leading qualifying with a total of 9,366. Host UNOH finished second in qualifying with 9,225 but lost in the opening match of the finals to Saginaw Valley State in a roll-off, 10-5, after tying at 407. Wright State's Brandon Weiker earned top individual honors with a six-game total of 1,369. Urbana's Kyle Cook (1,329) and Graham Fach (1,325) finished second and third, respectively. On the women's side, Wright State took down Notre Dame-Ohio, 354-350, in the championship match. Wright State led qualifying with 8,655, while Notre Dame was second with 8,444. Notre Dame-Ohio took down host UNOH, 426309, in the opening match of the finals. Shannon Dewitt of Wright State fired a six-game total of 1,265 to earn the top spot in the women's individual standings. PBA Spare Shots: BATTLES FOR PBA REGIONAL, WOMEN’S REGIONAL FINALS BERTHS ALMOST OVER The battles for eight PBA Regional, eight PBA Women’s Regional and eight PBA50 Tour berths in the PBA World Series of Bowling VI is almost over with the Sunday, Oct. 12, qualifying deadline rapidly approaching. In each case, eight players will earn paid entries into the World Series and they will compete in eight-game round-robin match play events on Friday, Oct. 24, at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas to determine the top two individuals who will advance to the new PBA Challenge Finals which will be contested on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 10:30 a.m. PT for delayed telecast on ESPN. All three match play qualifying events will be covered simultaneously live on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel, starting at 2:30 p.m. PT (5:30 p.m. ET). The fourth PBA Challenge Finals match will pit 2014 Teen Masters boys’ champion Michael Coffey of Melbourne, Fla., against girls’ champion Kelly Skalacki of Coram, N.Y., for the Teen Masters Grand THE BOWLER’S BLOG All I can say is WOW! I enjoyed myself so much when we went to Red Bird & to Ennis the other day that I took my husband and kids again yesterday! Oh yeah, & what did they think about it? They thought is was a lot smaller. But when we were there I think the whole Cathey family must have been there working! I met Lois, Jeff, Billy & Lauren, Jennifer and TJ. Plus when we started to leave, they all called me by name and said they looked forward to seeing us again! Then by the time we got to Ennis, Billy & Lauren were there too! It was homey... Really? Thats impressive! We have been bowling over here for 5 years and the bartender is the only one that halfway remembers my name…The counter guy looks at me clueless every time I walk in! My kids really liked the Ennis Alley! They stayed in the gameroom the whole time we were there. We practically had to drag them out when we started to leave! I though that the pinsetters were way cool! Being able to shoot only at the pins that I have trouble with was really helpful! Championship. The PBA Challenge telecast will conclude with a special Knockout Bonus Round in which the four winners will each bowl one shot, with the lowest score per round eliminated until a champion remains. In the season-long PBA Regional Finals points races, seven of eight berths are already decided. Regional points winners are: Ryan Shafer, Horseheads, N.Y. (East Region); Connor Pickford, Charlotte, N.C. (South); Tom Hess, Urbandale, Iowa (Midwest Region); Shawn Maldonado, Houston, Texas (Southwest); David Haynes, Las Vegas (West); Josh Blanchard, Gilbert, Ariz. (Northwest), and Pat Nolan (Japan). The Central Region berth will be decided this weekend in the PBA Fishing & Hunting USA Central Open at Northway Lanes in Muskegon, Mich. E.J. Tackett of Huntington, Ind., will take a 3,600-point lead over Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., into the region’s final qualifying event. In the new PBA Women’s Regional competition, points winners already confirmed are: Kristina Wendell, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (East); Christina Hardee, Mt. Dora, Fla. (South); Clara Guerrero, Pflugerville, Texas/Colombia (Southwest); and Yuka Tsuchiya (Japan). Unresolved heading into their final Central Region qual- ifying event in Muskegon this weekend, Shannon Pluhowsky of Kettering, Ohio, holds a 6,300-point lead over Jessica Stephens of Greenwood, Ind., and a 6,500-point lead over Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y. In the Midwest Region, Amanda Greene of Romney, W.Va., will take a modest 300-point edge over Kayla Stram of Grand Rapids, Minn., into this weekend’s Calvert’s Express Auto Midwest/Southwest Open at Aaron’s Family Fun Center in Belton, Mo. The women’s field will be finalized on Oct. 12 in the PBA Battle at Black Oak Casino West Open in Tuolumne, Calif. Missy Parkin, Laguna Hills, Calif. (West), and Lindsay Boomershine, Brigham City, Utah (Northwest) have big leads, but haven’t clinched their berths. For the second time in my life and third in Mom’s, the Pirates were going back to the World Series. Shortly after Blyleven’s final curve ball froze Cesar Geronimo for the game-ending called strike three, I glowed in the moment, wondering out loud how many more times I would see this. I had first seen it just eight years before. Mom saw her first pennant-clinching eleven years before that. Although I had seen numerous trips to the post-season in my youth, it was her response that really caught me off guard. “You just never know, it could be next year or it could be thirty years from now before they win again. You can’t take it for granted.” The woman who took me to little league baseball games, two-a-day pee-wee football practices, as well as Saturday morning junior leagues drops this on me. A life moment during a life moment, courtesy of the woman who brought me into this world. About all I could muster was some mumbling about enjoying the moment for what it was, then moving on to the next thing. For that moment, the next thing was that high school football game. The moment after that was the following morning at junior league, followed by working my pinchasing shift at the center across town (as explained in a JPA several weeks ago). Over the following days, I began to process what that statement really meant. Could it disappear tomorrow if you’re not careful? Do you need to keep plugging away to keep it going? Isn’t uber-focused hard work enough? That was my true extra credit assignment this year, to solve the riddle. So don’t take it for granted, eat your veggies, kiss your mom, smell the roses, do at least one random act of kindness every day, and don’t take it for granted. Having played Don McLean’s ‘American Pie’ enough times as a disc jockey, I wondered more about the legend of Buddy Holly before the day the music died. While in Lubbock for the annual PBA Southwest Regional two years ago, I drove to the cemetery after practice to find the distinctive headstone. Although there were several people nearby, it was extremely quiet and quite tranquil as I saw the headstone I had only heard about at this point. At the top of a hill in another cemetery last Monday, life is what happened one more time. I felt that kind of quiet once again, but this time, it was a much different reason, as my mother was laid to rest. Hope to watch baseball with her again someday. “The quickest and best way to reach people in bowling–” P.O.
