Even through the briefest encounters with John his passion and love of Christ shines through. FCUMC is proud to welcome John Gargis as the Associate Pastor: Evangelism. He most recently served as pastor of Lincoln Park UMC in Knoxville along with serving on the staffs of both KARM and Emerald Youth Foundation. John is a second career pastor who has previously owned technology companies in Knoxville. His own recovery story has led him to play a role in Celebrate Recovery leadership for more than 10 years. In ministry, John seeks to reach out to those who are lost and seeking “especially people on the fringes,” he said. As Associate Pastor: Evangelism, John will have primary responsibility for Celebrate Recovery and hospitality ministries. John will preach in both traditional and The Journey worship services. “Sharing the good news and applying it today is my passion,” he said. Pastor Randy Frye noted, “John’s passion for and effectiveness in connecting hurting people to the healing Christ will enable our congregation to be a place where lives are transformed. He has a unique ability to relate to people from all walks of life and from all types of challenging circumstances, as well as the tireless energy needed to build an ongoing ministry of evangelism within our community.” John and his wife, Becky, are experiencing life as new empty nesters. They are the proud parents of two sons: Sam, who attends the University of Memphis on a ROTC NAVY scholarship, and Matthew, a recent high school graduate who will begin at UT-Chattanooga in the fall. Becky, John’s wife of 26 years, serves as director of customer care for Radio Systems. (Also pictured is Sandy, the Gargis’ one year old rescue dog.) John plans to visit the Sunday School classes to introduce himself in the coming weeks. You may also welcome John via email at [email protected] or connect with him on social media. The camp will be held in the mountain city of Pogradec; and for many of the children who will be attending, this will be their first introduction to the Christian faith. For the majority of children in attendance, this is possible only because of the gifts sent from our Vacation Bible School missions offering and gifts from our Faith Promise. Vacation Bible School: Everest FCUMC held Vacation Bible School June 22-25. The church welcomed children to learn, sing, play and celebrate throughout the week. At Everest VBS, children learned how to conquer challenges with God’s mighty power. Thank you to the dedicated volunteers and leaders who made this ministry possible. Our team members will be assisting the Albanian leaders with games and storytelling. In addition, each afternoon we will work with the praise bands from the Pogradec and Tirana congregations, teaching them new songs and helping them with music lessons and worship ideas. On Sunday, July 19 I will preach at the Pogradec UMC and the team will return home the following day. Meals from FCUMC’s Stop Hunger Now Event in April have been shipped to Zambia! Our meals, combined with the generosity of others, have been shipped in a container filled with 285,120 meals, 29 donated solar light kits from Lighting for Literacy and hundreds of donated WAPIs (Water Pasteurization Indicators). Team members include: Mark Seals, Mark Biagi, Zach Wood, Kelsey Stewart and me. We ask for your prayers as they travel, as their meet new friends, share their gifts and live out the Gospel among the people of Albania. --Randy Melton Scholarship Accepting Applications Fountain City’s Woman Of the Year FCUMC students have an opportunity to apply for scholarship funds through the Melton Scholarship.
