General Manager’s Message
We made it through the summer with the weather
ranging from extreme rains to extreme heat. I know
this has been a challenge for landscaping, but thank
you for keeping up with your lawns and decorative
beds. Our landscaping company and golf maintenance
team have also done an outstanding job, so kudos to all.
Very soon, we will be entering our HOA Board and
Committee election season. While it may not get the
press of the National Election, these elections are no
less important to us for their impact on our day to day
lives. If you choose to participate, don’t worry about the
process—our elections are much less invasive in your
personal lives than what you are currently seeing on a
national scale. All residents who wish to be nominated
for open positions must declare their intentions
during the period September 19 to October 14, 2016.
There are currently 20+ open positions among all
of the Committees and Board. That means there are
opportunities in virtually every aspect of governance
and operation of the community. I encourage you to use
this opportunity to get involved. It is very rewarding
to serve your community and be assured it will add a
new dimension to your quality of life in Heritage Hunt.
It is a time and energy consuming commitment, but
well worth it. Please note also that there will be no
floor nominations this year for open positions without
declared candidates. Positions still open after the
election will be filled by appointment. Declare yourself
a candidate and put your skills and interest to work for
yourself, neighbors and community.
September promises to be a kickoff to a lot of fall
activities (besides the opening of football season and
the exciting conclusion of baseball season) including:
- Our Community Open House will be held on Sunday
September 18. This is always an important semiannual event that allows us to open our gates to any
interested current and future buyers in Heritage Hunt.
The success of this day goes a long way in maintaining
the value and reputation of our community, so please
give our Future Resident Sub-committee a hand by
participating if you can.
- We will be hosting an immunization clinic on
September 23, sponsored by Gainesville Giant
Pharmacy. Several immunizations will be offered
including flu shots so register early to save on time.
- The Charity Walk is slated to be held on September
24. This annual community event is one of the largest
events and one of many reasons Heritage Hunt has
been recognized as a humanitarian community model.
- Budget season begins the end of September for
the preparation of next year’s Operating Budget and
Repair and Replacement Reserve. Please plan on
participating. All meetings are open and everyone’s
input is valuable. You will learn a lot about the inner
workings and plans for the community in 2017. We
will post the schedules online and keep you informed
through the E-Communicator emails.
To learn more about some of these events including our
new look for the performing arts section keep reading
on and it continues to be a pleasure to serve you all.

Leaving A Legacy As
Grandparents
Since 1978 America has celebrated the role of grandparents with designating the Sunday after Labor Day
as Grandparents Day. While it does not receive the
same acclaim as some other national holidays it is no
less important to celebrate. For many, being a grandparent keeps one young and old at the same time. On
one particular morning a seven year old arose early
to make grandma a nice cup of coffee. Struggling to
drink what was the worst cup of coffee she’d ever
had she noticed a few green army men at the bottom.
When asked why they were included in the coffee the
young boy exclaimed, “Like it says on TV, grandma,
“The best part of waking up is soldiers in your cup!”
No one would question the influence media has on
people, especially young ones. The same can be said
about grandparents.
As adventurous as my grandpa’s life was it was the
shared stories over a meal or bowl of ice cream that
I remember best. Stories like hunting a leopard that
was terrorizing the village they lived in to attending
Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation. He loved life and
sharing it with family. In a recent article published
by American Grandparents Association a few suggestions were given on what a grandparent should
save for their grandkids. One may think of money for
college, but other ideas were suggested that you may
want to consider. Things like a family recipe, an old
document like a report card or marriage license, a
photo of you with your grandkid(s), a treasured book,
record or CD and most importantly a written account
of your family history. So just like Folder’s slogan, be
the best part of your grandkids “waking up” and enjoy
creating a legacy that will carry on for generations to
come. Happy Grandparents Day!

The Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning
(ACSP) is working on the extension of the current
Heritage Hunt Strategic Plan. Our goal is to create
a Plan that will serve current residents and attract
future residents. During the past few months the
committee has gathered information from a variety of
sources including, but not limited to, Board members
and Committee chairs, Prince William County, and
local Realtors.
Last month several members of the committee held
three focus group meetings with small groups of
residents to obtain their input with regard to the
wants and needs of the community now and in the
future. Residents were randomly called to participate
and confirmed participants were emailed invitations
along with the 10 questions to be discussed at the
meetings.
Each focus group was comprised of about sixteen
residents and a volunteer resident to take notes
during the meeting. Everyone who agreed to
partic-ipate attended! Residents arrived ready to talk,
and provide answers to the questions. They were
enthusiastic and appreciative of the opportunity to
share their experiences, ideas, and suggestions.
Information from the focus groups is now being
analyzed for incorporation into our strategic plan.
Several themes which occurred across all three
meetings have been identified. Some themes include:
• The need for designed and enhanced amenities to
support a vibrant and active lifestyle.
• Casual meeting area that will promote a “sense of
community.”
• Comprehensive array of diverse communication
methods to keep res-idents informed and involved.
The Advisory Committee for Strategic Planning thanks
all of the Focus Group participants for their time and
input. We hope to have more oppor-tunities to talk
with residents in small groups like this in the future.

Reserves
Heritage Hunt has four Reserve Funds, Operating Reserve, Major Project Reserves, Infrastructure Reserve,
and Repair and Replacement Reserve. I would like to
start with the Repair and Replacement Reserves (R&R
Reserve) then cover the other reserves in another
article.
The Repair and Replacement Reserve is mandated
under the Virginia Property Owners’ Association Act.
Contributions to the Repair and Replacement Reserve are based on the Cash Flow Method. Using this
method annual contributions to the R&R Reserve are
designed to offset the variable annual expenditures
from the Reserve while maintaining a threshold funding level.
A. The Virginia Property Owners’ Association Act
requires the HH Board of Directors:
• Conduct a Reserve Study at least once every five years to determine the necessity and amount of
reserve required to repair, replace and restore/
alter Community Facilities and/or Common Areas;
• Review the results of that study at least annually
to determine sufficiency of reserve; and
• Make any adjustments the Board deems necessary
to maintain reserve as appropriate levels.
• The annual budget for the R&R Reserve shall be
based upon the current estimated replacement
costs, estimating remaining life and the estimated
useful life of the capital component.
B. Part of your monthly dues is allocated towards
the R&R Reserve. The budgeted amount for 2016 is
$771,400. Each month $46.40 from your monthly
amount of $290 is going to the R&R Reserve.
C. The first step in the budget process is review
the Reserve Study. The reserve study is a list of our
tangible property, going out over 20 years. The study
calculates when each major item needs to be replaced
as well as
allowances for small items called an allowance.
D. The chairs and CMC (our management company)
review the list and evaluate whether the item needs
to be replaced during the year. A budget is prepared
based on our current information. The proposed
items are the foundation for the amount of funds that
need to be
allocated the following year to pay for these replacement and repairs.
E. As of June 30, 2016 $224,193 has been spent for
Repair and Replacement items.
F. As of June 30, 2016 your HOA has $2,275,278 in
CD’s, Treasuries, and cash to cover the cost of Repair
and Replacement items.

CRC Resident Forum
The Community Relations Committee (CRC) sponsors the popular Residents Forum Series featuring a
fellow Heritage Hunt resident sharing professional
experiences, hobbies or other areas of expertise with
our community. The forums are typically held at the
Heritage Hunt Clubhouse in the Mountain View Room
on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 8:30
PM. Please check HHTV, the Heritage Horn and the
Clubhouse bulletin board for further updates.
September 13 - “Exploring America Stars, Stripes
and Slide-Outs” the latest show by Dave Anderson, an
eight year Heritage Hunt resident who has been performing for over 50 years as a musician, storyteller
and songwriter. Dave’s third appearance at the Resident’s Forum is based on material he’s written over
the last two years about his and his wife’s exploits
touring the country in a travel trailer. Hear songs
about national parks and battlefields; and camping
in our great outdoors including Mount Saint Helens,
the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and Glacier National
Parks.
His stories and songs bring to life the splendor of our
natural resources. A feature of the show are several
songs written about the valorous Minnesota 1st
Volunteer Infantry and the critical role they played
in both the First Battle of Manassas and the Battle of
Gettysburg. Join us on September 13th for Dave’s
songs, humor, and stories about America.
October 4 (special date) - Heritage Hunt Concerts
is presenting its 100th program in December!. HHC
cofounder and president, Bill Daly will outline to you
how this central element of Heritage Hunt’s active
adult lifestyle has managed to present such varied
and popular monthly programs since its 2008 founding — as a chartered club operated by resident volunteers, without HOA subsidy.
Through this discussion, you will learn how HHC
fulfills its mission: Presenting professional-caliber
programs to our community for the enjoyment of residents and their guests at the best possible price!
You will learn how HHC began as a classical concert
series and how it has evolved to also embrace rock ‘n
roll, bluegrass, show tunes, jazz, folk tunes, comedy
and countless other genres. You’ll also get a preview
of shows coming up in the next year and you will
learn how you can help present and promote these
wonderful shows. Join us in celebrating the approach
of our 100th program!
The CRC invites all Heritage Hunt residents to share
their experiences with the community at future Residence Forums. If you or someone you know in the
community has experiences of interest to the community, or if you have a request for a repeat/return
speaker, please contact Emily Russell at 703 7431875 or by e-mail at [email protected]

Heritage Hunt Library News
In recent months several people have asked the librarians what type of books we accept.
We are very grateful for the support of the community
and their donations of novels, biographies, non-fiction
and large print books. We have large print books &
books on tape in the closet closet to the window.
We do not accept the following types of books: coffee
table books, cookbooks, Reader’s Digest Condensed
books, text books, how-to- books, books on travel,
yearbooks, or books that are moldy or in poor condition and old maps or atlases, reference books or
magazines.
Please do not put donated books in the Marsh Mansion library. Often these books must be brought to the
Clubhouse library by the volunteer library staff & are
often far too heavy for them to be lifting.
As many of you may know, we periodically cull the
books, removing books that are more than 10 years
old, as well as books that are torn or in bad condition.
We put these on the DO NOT RETURN cart in the back
of the library and residents are welcome to take books
for their reading pleasure, please do not return them.
We ask that you only donate the types of books that
we accept. Often the number of unacceptable books
are many and very heavy for the ladies to lift and
move. We ask that if you have books that we do not
accept, to bring them to the Gainesville or Manassas
Libraries or place them in your recycle box. If you
have any questions, please feel free to call Annette
Johnson-743-5181 or Linda Deam—743-5422.

September is National Preparedness Month. Sponsored by FEMA, National Preparedness Month aims to
educate and empower Americans to prepare for and
respond to all types of emergencies, including natural
disasters and potential terrorist attacks. In an effort to
raise awareness of emergency preparedness throughout the Heritage Hunt community, the Emergency
Preparedness Committee members and Emergency
Volunteers (EVs) will be involved in a community
outreach campaign in September, to ask a couple of
questions about each residents’ preparation for an
emergency and the status of their smoke/carbon
monoxide detectors.
Would you be ready to protect yourself and your
loved ones if there were a local or national emergency? If disaster strikes our community, you might
not have access to food, water, or electricity for some
time. Take the time now to prepare an emergency
water, food and a disaster supplies kit to service your
family for three days. Ensure that you have working, up-to-date, smoke & carbon monoxide detectors
installed properly in your home (most detectors are
only recommended by the manufacturer’s to use for
10 years). Make plans with your family and friends in
case you’re not together during an emergency. Being
prepared means staying informed. Check all types of
media – Web sites, newspapers, radio, TV, mobile and
land phones – for global, national and local information. Finally, get involved with the Heritage Hunt
Emergency Preparedness efforts by becoming an
Emergency Volunteer (EV).
Before considering volunteering to be an Emergency
Volunteer (EV), you may want to know something
about this important community service opportunity.
Some of the duties of an Emergency Volunteer (EV)
may include:
• Assisting the Emergency Preparedness Committee
with its projects and mission.
• Reporting information to emergency responders
about an emergency situation in your neighborhood.
• Passing information to community residents from
authoritative sources.
• Assisting first responders with recovery operations
such as distributing water, food and supplies.
• Assisting to account for neighbors and pets following violent weather emergencies.
• Sharing any emergency equipment or tools that can
help in emergency situations.
• Taking the Emergency Preparedness Committee
Hands-Only CPR/AED & Heimlich Maneuver course
(Offered quarterly at no charge).
• In the event of an emergency, helping to staff the
community Emergency Coordination Center.

Preparedness (contd.)
• Training other emergency volunteers in your area of
emergency expertise.
• Marking and clearing (only to level of physical capacity) hydrants in deep snow storms.
• Assisting emergency communications by operating
mobile, two-way amateur radios (Ham and FRS).
• Attending and participating in regular EV meetings
and training events.

Volunteer, please visit our website on the Heritage

This describes ‘Normal Gardeners’ (NG) versus ‘Obsessed Gardeners’ (OG), offering guidelines for determining which side of the perennial bed you fall into. I
know I’m not normal. What about you?
NG: You won’t leave town when your tulips are in
bloom.
OG: ...nor your daffodils, azaleas, roses, clematis, lilies,
hydrangeas.
NG: You invest in fine gardening tools.
OG: You keep spare tools in your car for gardening
emergencies.
NG: You have a compost heap.
OG: You take its temperature every day.
NG: You know the virtues of hand weeding.
OG: You’ve weeded after dark with your miner’s hat.
NG: You can’t believe you ordered so many bulbs this
fall.
OG: ... and yet, you’re still not sure you have enough.
NG: You know the Latin names of your plants.
OG: You use them in conversation.
NG: Someone says you have Plant Acquisition Syndrome.
OG: You take it as a compliment.
NG: You have dirt under your fingernails.
OG: What fingernails?
NG: You’ve had a soil test.
OG: You studied for it.
NG: You teach your kids the wonders of gardening.
OG: You forgot to have kids.
NG: You love gardening more than anything
OG: ... and you hate gardening more than anything.

Good Things Are
About to Happen at
the Front Gate
That’s Right. We are implementing a visitor pass
system that will dramatically reduce processing time
for all visitors arriving at the front gate. Gate Key has
added a barcode pass capability that can quickly print
out a pass to your guests the next time they enter
Heritage Hunt. Passes for your permanent guests will
be valid for one year, unless you change their status or
remove them from your account. If they are still valid
at the end of the first year, the Security Officer will
automatically renew it for another year. Passes for
temporary guests will only be valid for the period you
specify.
We anticipate the new system should be operational
before the end of this month. Needless to say, the
Security Officer is going to be very busy during the
transition for the next month or so issuing as many
passes and answering the many questions visitors
will undoubtedly have. Therefore, it would be a big
help if you make sure your account is up to date with
your Guest’s names spelled correctly. It would also
be appreciated if you need to make any last minute
changes to your account, please do it before the new
scanner system starts. It will be faster if you access your account and make any updates or changes
yourself rather than calling the front gate and asking
the Security Officer to make them for you. Once you
enter any new or updated data make sure you “Save”,
your change, it is effective immediately. If it has been
a while since you logged on to your account or need
help, contact the front desk. Gatekey.com website has
a “Resident Login” tab where you will find a tutorial
and resident manual that can walk you through the
process.
Other Gate Key communities that have implemented
this barcode pass system report a dramatic improvement in traffic control while reducing processing time
for all visitors. We believe it will do the same for us as
well.

It’s Early This
Year But It’s
Not Too Late!
The semi-annual Community Open House is
scheduled for Sunday,
September 18th from
12:30 to 4PM. (It has
been held in October in the past.) Be sure to tell your
friends interested in finding out more about Heritage
Hunt about the change. Volunteer residents will be at
the Clubhouse to answer questions about the community as well as their own experiences in selecting
Heritage Hunt. Tours of the Clubhouse and the Fitness
Center will be available as well.
Several residential Open Houses will be available for
visitors to view. If you are selling your home without an agent, we can arrange to have your address
included on the Open House Listing. If you would like
to volunteer to help that day, it is not too late. For any
information about volunteering or any other aspect
of the event, contact Joan Donnelly 703-743-1325 or
email at [email protected].

Did you grow up pledging allegiance to the flag every morning at school? Did you serve in the military where honoring the United States flag was a part of each day’s routine?
Would you like to see the US flag, state flag and Heritage
Hunt flag each time you come into/out of the community?
If so, the Patriots Club is seeking your membership. For a
mere $10 per person, you can help make this idea a reality.
The Patriots Club’s initial objective is to have the flags of
the United States, Commonwealth of Virginia, and Heritage Hunt flying from new flagpoles at the entrance along
Heathcote Boulevard. We want to display our allegiance to
our country, state and community for all to see.
Over 800 residents have signed support for this objective.
We trust now that many will join what we hope will become the largest club in Heritage Hunt to fund and support
this objective. All dues and contributions will go toward
achieving the installation and maintenance of the three
flagpoles and flags. The flags will be illuminated at night so
that they can stay up 24/7; except for being lowered during
extreme weather, replaced due to wear, and at half-mast on
certain occasions.
No funding by the HOA is expected or requested. In order
for the Board to act favorably on this idea, they have indicated that the Grounds Committee needs to make a recommendation in favor of installing the flags. Over the past
two years they have not done so. We trust that by raising
the initial $8,000 to install the flagpoles and flags, their
concern that the residents will not contribute to this cause
will be removed. Please clip out the following membership
application and send your dues/contribution/email address to our treasurer. Please encourage your friends and
neighbors to do the same! Members will be give periodic
updates on our progress and future meetings. Thanks for
your patriotism and support!

a two-part program
Monday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. in the
Mountain View Room
This meeting of our genealogy club kicks off the SeptemberJune “season” with two sessions:
The first part of our meeting, members will receive a questionnaire asking about their genealogy research interests and the
club’s upcoming programs, including the “storytelling” theme
that will overlay the programs for this period A discussion will
follow the questionnaire, with members giving their input and
views about programs they are most interested in having.
This will be followed by Lecture 1, “Interviewing Kin and Mining Home Sources by John Philip Colletta. He discusses how
to interview relatives about their family history. He gives 10
tips and concludes with advice on how best to organize what
you've learned.
All Heritage Hunt residents and guests are welcome

Why is Genealogy the
Second Most Popular
Hobby in the U.S.?
Anyone who begins to research their family backgrounds
quickly becomes hooked. This hugely popular hobby,
cited as the second most popular by ABC News and other
media sources, is a very rewarding adventure that produces many exciting rewards, new friends and relatives,
and a fresh appreciation and understanding of our roots,
the heritage of our families. At social events, talking
about genealogy is a sure-fire icebreaker!
All of us grow up wondering:
• Where do I come from? What is the ethnicity of my
ancestors?
• What were they like? How did they live?
• Why did they move? What migration path did they
take?
• What were their religious beliefs? Their political views?
• How did they support their families?
• How did the era in which they lived affect them?
• What qualities did they pass on to me?
• Are the family stories I’ve heard true or just fiction?
As we retire and have more free time to think about our
ancestors, we realize very quickly how much we don’t
know…about uncovering their lives, especially how to
find information long filed away in locations all over the
place -- courthouses, archives, libraries, historical societies, and in boxes and suitcases in our (or our relatives’)
attics or basements.
But genealogy is not merely a collection of names and
dates. There are real lives behind those impersonal
pieces of data! Who are those people “looking at us”
in daguerreotypes, cabinet cards, and other old photographs? Pictures aren’t merely images; each picture tells
us a story. There are stories behind each person listed in
passenger lists, immigration papers, census records, old
history books, etc. Storytelling is a great way to resurrect
those long-buried ancestral lives and bring them into the
lives of our children and grandchildren.
Our Genealogy Club is planning to focus this year (September to June) on storytelling. We will explore various
ways to tell an ancestor’s story. Come to our meeting on
September 19 at 10 AM in the Mountain View room and
find out why genealogy is such a popular endeavor!

Annual School Supply
Collection A Big Success
Many thanks to all who contributed to the Annual
HHWO School Supply Collection. We collected more
supplies this year than in previous years. The supplies
were delivered to Bull Run Middle School and Loch
Lomond Elementary School. School counselors are the
initial recipients of the supplies. They in turn distribute items to teachers and students as appropriate.
The counselors at both schools were most appreciative and send their thanks to the HH residents making
contributions. As one counselor said, “Thank you just
isn’t enough.”

Heritage Hunt Woodcarvers
Well the summer is about over so it is time to plan
how you will spend your hours inside where it will
be warm this winter. Why not take up woodcarving
if you haven’t tried it? If you have carved in the past,
now is the time to get back to it. Check out some of
the carvings the club has recently completed in the
display cabinet near the Up to Par (UTP) office in the
downstairs hall.
If you have never carved before and would like to
learn, come to the carving club on any Tuesdays 1 PM
to 4 PM in the craft room downstairs in the clubhouse.
To learn, we will furnish the wood, knife and instructions. Carvings make nice gifts for your grand kids,
family and friend. We have both men and women
beginning and experienced carvers participating. So
come by and give it a try as there is no charge for the
experience. You may contact J.C. Evans, 703-7431321 or Jon Crissey, 703-743-1317 if you would like

On Saturday, September 24th at 8 AM, the 15th Annual Heritage Charity Classic 5K/2K Cancer Walk/
Run/Bike will be held here at Heritage Hunt. Over
the years, the Heritage Charity Classic has organized
Golf Tournaments, Casino Nights, Bingos, and Walks
in support of various cancer charities. To date we
have contributed over $1.1 million dollars to the fight
against cancer.
The last few years all proceeds have been donated
to the Novant UVA Cancer Center at Lake Manassas
right here in Gainesville. When we started the Cancer
Walk/Bike/Run, the Cancer Center had not yet been
built. Our neighbors who needed treatment had to
travel to Fairfax and fight the traffic, or drive to Charlottesville.
Last year nearly 200 people of all ages participated in
the Cancer Walk/Run/Bike….from 5 years old to over
85 years young. Come on out and enjoy a walk, run
or bike through our community, socialize with neighbors, support the fight against cancer, and maybe even
win a door prize. T-shirts, food and beverages will be
provided….all for the $25 entry fee. The Cancer Walk/
Run/Bike will begin on the Clubhouse Lawn at 8 AM
sharp. Registration forms, with additional information, are available at the Front Desk. You may register
up until the day of the event, as well as on the morning of the event. T-shirts may be picked up Monday
through Friday evening, September 19 - 23 from 5:00
– 7:30 PM in the Clubhouse Lobby. Any questions,
please call Frank Maresca at 703-743-5088.

Hello Heritage Hunt Residents! My name is Debbie
Schlueter and I started teaching fitness classes at HH
this Spring after teaching classes and attending fitness
conferences in Illinois and Virginia for the past 13
years. I have been taking group exercise classes for
30 years and I try to stay knowledgeable about fitness
and health research. I have a Master’s degree from
the University of Chicago so I will admit that I am a
research nerd and my class attendees know I share it
whenever possible.
One of the most important things I have learned is
that muscles only know movement or no movement.
As long as they are not injured, muscles can get stronger regardless of age. You should always be working
to maintain or add muscle mass or you will surely lose
The Heritage Horn • September 2016
Heritage Hunt Golf & Country Club: www.heritagehunt.net
Healthy Options (contd.)
it naturally over time. Reduced muscle mass lowers
your metabolism leading to weight gain and increases
the likelihood of falls as stabilizing muscles become
weaker. You cannot only do cardio exercise and
increase your muscle mass sufficiently. Controlled
movements with high repetitions and lower weights
are very effective at increasing bone density, adding
muscle mass and increasing one’s metabolism. Come
visit a PowerPump class to learn proper form from
either Chaka at 10:10am on Thursdays or with me
on Mondays at 10:10am. The first class you attend of
each type is free. We have numerous modifications
for every exercise and we regularly accommodate
persons with injuries.
It is easy to forget that your heart is a muscle, not
an organ. In our Tabata classes on Wednesdays at
10:10am and Fridays at 9:00am we use intervals to
exercise your heart. We alternate low-impact cardio
exercises with weight training. We do each move for
only 20 seconds with 10 seconds of rest in between.
After you complete 8 moves, you get a minute of recovery. Research has shown that this type of interval
class is a very effective way of training your heart
muscles and produces results much more quickly than
steady-state training like walking at the same pace. It
is also shown to help maintain and grow areas of the
brain that can reduce over time helping to prevent
dementia.
In Monday’s Low-Impact Aerobics at 9:00am, we
improve our cardiovascular endurance, coordination
and agility for the first 45 minutes. Then we do 15
minutes of resistance training. Attendees pick which
muscles they want to strengthen during that time.
All of these classes are specifically designed for activeolder adults with smaller class sizes to provide more
individual attention, appropriate movements, suitable
duration of work and lower music volumes
I can’t resist my urge to share research I read in Always Hungry? by David Ludwig, MD, PhD, an obesity
specialist at Harvard University for the past 30 years.
He explains that too much insulin causes fat cells
to increase in size and number resulting in humans
gaining weight. What causes the body to produce too
much insulin? The answer is sugar and the highly
processed starches that you find in packaged “lowfat” foods made with refined grains, potato products
or concentrated sugar. He states, “Overeating hasn’t
made our fat cells grow; our fat cells have been
programmed to grow, and that has made us overeat.”
Insulin ushers calories into fat cells so we run low on
accessible calories for energy making us hungry more
quickly. His explanation helped me to understand
why I need to cut back on the processed carbohydrates that act fast on satisfying the brain, but result
in weight gain over time.
I hope to see you in class! Remember, the first visit to
each type of class is free

Two New Fitness
Classes Offered This Fall
Restorative Yoga - Mondays (5 PM)
Restorative yoga is a yoga practice that has a healing and recuperative approach. It relies on the use
of props and the prolonged holding of a few simple
poses to achieve a deep level of relaxation. Every pose
is done on the floor, so that the muscles don’t have
to work to hold us up. This practice also gives us the
opportunity to quiet our minds helping us to let go of
stress. It is for anyone, from the very fit to the deconditioned. It is especially helpful for those of us who
lead fast-paced lives, are under stress, or have a regular, more intense physical workout. A restorative yoga
practice adds the balance of yin to our yang natured
lives. In summary restorative yoga:
•
Enhances flexibility
•
Deeply relaxes the body
•
Stills the mind
•
Improves capacity for healing and balancing
•
Balances the nervous system
•
Boosts the immune system
•
Enhances mood states
Classes will begin September 19 at the Fitness Center
aerobics room and taught by Elizabeth Finnan.
Golden Grooves - Wednesdays (11:30 AM)
Golden Grooves is a slower paced aerobic format that
mixes traditional moves with sashays, mambos and
other easy to execute steps for a fun cardio workout!
Participants have the option of using small balls,
bands and lightweights to work on balance, coordination, strength and flexibilty.
This is a nice class for the beginner, or those looking for a less intense but effective full body workout.
Classes will begin September 7 at the Fitness Center
aerobics room and will be taught by Lisa MoscatelloHartung.

Seated Aerobics - A Class
Anyone Can Do!
FREE Class, September 12 (10 AM), Ballroom
How many times has your doctor recommended
watching your diet and exercising? If you have arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes,
cardiac problems, your doctor has likely recommended exercise as a prescription for managing pain
and reducing the effects of these health issues. Also,
exercise aide’s memory, improves mood and promotes
a feeling of well-being.
It seems like such a simple recommendation, but
beginning an exercise program is not easy for many
people. Problems with knees, hips and back can make
it difficult. Many simply don’t know where to start.
Seated aerobics, often called “dancing in a chair” is a
simple and effective way to begin. It’s a “fun”ctional
fitness class including an upper and lower body
workout which can be modified as needed. The class
provides a full body workout with no strain on knees,
hips and back. Many of the movements can be done
at home on your own. This class works for beginning
exercisers, experienced exercisers, those with medical
conditions or those who use a cane or a walker.
The class includes three segments:
• Cardio workout-which elevates the heart rate and
breathing rate to increase oxygen volume in the
body and the brain. Most of the cardio benefits
come from arm movements which can be modified as needed,
• Stretching and flexibility for functional fitnessThis segment eases tight muscles and stiff joints
to allow every day function.
• Strength training-helps build bone mass to ward
off osteoporosis. Simple resistance bands are used
to build strength.
The 10 week fall session will begin with a FREE trial
class on Monday, September 12 in the Great Oak Ballroom at 10:00. Please bring bottled water.
Seated aerobics classes are held on both Monday
and Thursday in the Ballroom. Fall session begins
on Thursday, September 15 and Monday, September,
September 19.
Fee: one class weekly for 10 weeks-$80, two classes
weekly for 10 weeks-$140. Contact Joey Wagner 703743-1043 for questions or information.

In September our start time will revert to 8:30 AM to
accommodate the start of school and let the busses at
Bull Run Middle School and in Piedmont get out of our
way.
Holy Cow!! July was a ride in the furnace, but it did not
stop our hardy bunch from getting out and riding 2030 miles on most mornings and continuing with our
leisurely neighborhood rides on Tuesday. However,
it did put a damper on our riding the W&OD, over to
National Harbor, and etc. where the start times would
be delayed and end times would correlate the highest
heat of the day. The weather forecasters say that on
average July is the warmest month of the year. They
predicted that during August, temperatures should
ease out of the high 90s to the high 80s and then
moderate even more in September. August 4th, temperatures were cool enough to support a ride from
the Marsh Mansion over the Aldie for lunch and then
return. Hopefully, the weather forecasters are right
about the moderating temperatures. We need to catch
up on our outside HH rides.
One of our
members, who
has been in
cool Colorado
for much of the
summer, sent us
a picture of this
very informative
sign.
Who knew that
the average
cyclist consumes
22 gallons of
beer per year
and peddles
1,852 miles per
year for an average of 84 miles
per gallon? Since
we typically ride
75-100 miles
per week, most of us do not have a problem riding the
1,852 miles. In fact, one of our members has been
clocking 700 – 800 miles per week getting ready for
the national senior Olympics. However, several of us
admit we need to get to work on our beer drinking. I
suppose wine would be a good substitute.
The Cycling Club is meets every Monday – Friday at
the Marsh Mansion, except on days we transport our
bikes to start points outside of HH. In the coming
months, we have lots of fun rides planned for outside
of Heritage Hunt. Some will include an overnight stay
at interesting locations.

Cycling Club News (contd.)
On Tuesdays the Club has been conducting a leisurely
ride lasting 60 minutes (plus or minus a minute or
two) over mostly level terrain. The ride stops for a
water break at approximately 30 minutes and at Subway at Merchants Square in Dominion Valley for coffee, tea, sodas, and chit chat before returning to HH.
Persons not yet on the HH Cycling Club email list
may get on the list by emailing Bob Shannon at [email protected]. Being on the list will allow you
to know when weather conditions are considered too
severe to ride locally or when the club is going to take
a ride with a starting point away from HH.

HH Hiking Group
July came and went with only one group hike due to
the heat and humidity. Yes, it was humid the day we
were there. We hiked the now completed outer ring
green trail on Bull Run Mountain. This seems to be
our go to nearby hiking area. This loop is an enjoyable
hike of about 4 miles over varying terrain and elevation changes that passes points of historical interest.
The entire loop is now in the woods as they blazed a
new section of trail so the final half-mile is no longer
along the road. The location so near Heritage Hunt is
an added plus.
We look forward to the upcoming fall weather for more
enjoyable hiking conditions and more challenging
hikes. To be added to the HH Hiking Club email contact
list please email Margi Worrest at mbworrest@gmail.
com. This will keep you informed of where we plan to
hike as well as cancellations due to weather issues.

Wine Club - September 19
Quattro Goomba’s Winery
34
The Heritage Hunt Chapter of the American Wine
Society invites members and guests to explore quality wines, vineyards, wineries, and wine-makers. Our
club is dedicated to wine education and the appreciation and enjoyment of wine from around the world.
Sixty members
and guests
attended our
July 18 meeting in the clubhouse. The
event featured
a delightful tasting of
Italian wines
led by Tom Savage of International Cellars, with help
from our friends at Cork & Fork. Tasting focused on
the wines of Molise, on the Adriatic Coast, and Erice,
on the western tip of Sicily. We enjoyed wines based
on a wide range of lesser-known Italian grapes. This
was an entertaining and educational session. In addition to Tom’s excellent presentation and discussion,
we were pleased to have as special guests Sudha and
Pandit Patil, proprietors of Narmada Winery, a highquality, boutique winery located in nearby Amissville
VA.
Our August meeting featured the terrific wines now
being produced by Naked Mountain Winery. Naked
Mountain is one of the oldest, continuously-operating
wineries in Virginia. Under the leadership of owners
Randy and Meagan Morgan, the winery has reclaimed
its spot as a premier Virginia-wine producer. Sandy
Bly, General Manager, and her team introduced us to
the excellent reds and whites being produced by this
venerable producer.
Our guest on September 19 will be Quattro Goomba’s
Winery in nearby Aldie. Quattro Goomba’s was
founded in 2008 by
Jay and Jody DeCianno
and David and Carole
Camden. The DeCianno’s wine making
experience goes back
generations to Italy, and
the Camden family has
been involved in Virginia agriculture since
the mid 18th century. The partners founded Quattro
Goomba’s with a focus on the enjoyment, with friends
and family, of both wine and food. The presentation
and tasting will be led by Fletcher Henderson, winemaker, who is well-known to many of our club members. Fletcher has been in the wine business for over
15 years, and his involvement with and support of our
wine club dates to its very beginnings. He assumed
wine-maker responsibilities for Quattro Goomba’s this
past February. Prior to that we was wine-maker at La
Grange, and visited our club last fall. You can expect
an informative and enjoyable presentation.

The Virginian Dining Room will open at 6:45pm on

great event. Reservations are required for members
and guests (who are always encouraged). Registration closes 12pm noon Friday September 16. To
reserve your seat contact Emily Russell at omieljr@

expanded to 135 superstores in 18 states. Come to
the meeting and hear what makes Total Wine different and why we should be pleased to have their store
in Gainesville. The answer may surprise you.

Dining At Your Virginian
Dining Room
When you make plans to eat out at a restaurant you
probably leave your house with a set of expectations
of what your dinning experience will be.
You expect to be greeted in a friendly manner; your
server to be knowledgeable about food and drink
specials as well as the other items on the menu; to
have your food cooked as ordered and delivered in a
reasonable time frame.
If you’ve eaten at the Virginia Dinning Room (VDR)
and your experience matches the expectations mentioned above, then you’re happy, and will spread the
word to others. If your dinning experience was NOT
GOOD, for ANY reason, then we need to know that!
You can do that by one of two means. First, tell your
server what your dissatisfaction with the meal is, and
see if they can resolve it for you on the spot. If not
you could speak to the Dinning Room Manager. The
second means, is to fill out the Comment Card noting
what the particular problem(s) was.
Shaun Fronk, Director of Operations for Up To Par
(UTP), and the Dining Room Manager read every
Comment Card. If they are showing any type of negative trends such as food being served cold or that it’s
not being cooked as ordered, they will then personally
meet with the kitchen staff and servers responsible
for preparing and delivering the food orders to ensure
they are aware of these problems, and look for ways
to remedy them.
One of the most frequent problems our diners cite is
that the meal takes too long to get to the table from
the time they ordered it. The process of taking your
orders and getting your food to you is a multi-step
process.
Your server approaches your table. He/she will ask
if you’d like any drinks or appetizers. He/she takes
down all orders and enters them into the computer.
Then the server, after allowing a few minutes for the
diners to enjoy their drinks/appetizers should come
back to the table to take the entrée orders. For six
to ten people this also takes time. Then the orders
are input into the computer with a food ticket being printed in the kitchen. It is from this point in the
process that the clock starts ticking in getting your
entrée prepared and delivered to your table. The industry standard for this part of the meal process is 15
minutes for lunch and 20 minutes for dinner. If this is
not happening in the time frame referenced, we want
to know so we can improve. We need that information
to examine kinks in our system.
We work hard to earn your business and want to
ensure your dining experience is a positive one. Keep
providing us your feedback and know we want you to
proudly talk about your Virginia
Dining Room with others.

don’t give me that old excuse about not being able to carry a tune. Our director, Bobbie
Bragg helps us to work wonders with our
voices. The Bible says “Make a joyful noise
unto the Lord.” Nowhere does it say you have
to be good enough for the Kennedy Center.
You just have to be joyful. Believe me, we at
the Women of Note enjoy ourselves and all
the women we have gotten to consider as
family.
The Women of Note sing in three and fourpart harmony and perform two concerts each
year, one in December and in May. Our latest
Spring Concert we sang Hernandos Hideawaye, Dave Brubeck’s Take Five. How many
of you know that there are words to Take
Five? Adding a Patriotic Medley along with
an Ode to Beethoven Medley were all part of
our spring program.
We practice on Monday evenings in the Billiards Room at 7-9 PM. The time flies by as
we learn new songs and try to remember one
or two we have sung before. It’s relaxed and
we will welcome you with open arms. Come
and join us. Call Barbara Kenefake at 703743-1007 in early September to set up a time
when the director determines which voice
group fits you. Hope to see you. Keep that
song not only in your heart, but on your lips
as well.

Little Theater News
After taking a short summer break, Little
Theater is back hard at work on our fall production, “The Book of Murder,” by Ron Cowen.
This audience

Mayer and Bill
Harrison and

few of the many roles. Anyone interested in
theater is gladly welcomed.
For information contact our directors or
membership chair Ginny McCardle ([email protected]). Our annual picnic will
be held September 24 at Gene and Kathryn
Schmiel’s.

Season of Singing
After a summer of special events such as
presenting a program of spirituals for the
Sisters at the Benedictine Monastery in
Bristow, Virginia, and a select ensemble performing for the World War II “Home Front”
presentation at the Oatlands Plantation in
Leesburg, Virginia, the Heritage Hunt “Men
in Song” took a few weeks off for a welldeserved rest.
On September 12th, we will be holding an
open rehearsal for all new residents (and
established ones, too) who might be interested in singing with us on a permanent
basis! No “contracts in blood” are necessary… just come and see if you enjoy it! The
rehearsal will be from 7:15 until 8:30 on
Monday evening, September 12, in the Ballroom!
Don’t miss this evening of harmony, fun and
fellowship!

a few months after Beethoven’s death.

Pinochle Workshop-Sept 15
If you’d like to play pinochle, come join the Pinochle
Club for a workshop on Thursday, September 15, at
1 PM in the Clubhouse Pool Room. Both new players
and experienced players needing a refresher are most
welcome!
This workshop will include a briefing on the basics of
single-deck, four-hand pinochle and an opportunity to
play several practice games, with coaching assistance
by club members. We will cover how to play and take
tricks; how to keep score; and how to evaluate your
hand and bid.
Workshop participants will receive a personal copy of
the basic rules of the game and a listing of the point
values of the various meld combinations. The first few
practice hands will be played “open” - with all cards
dealt face up. Doing so affords the maximum learning
opportunity, as experienced players will familiarize
you with the order of play, what to lead and which
card has captured each trick. You will also learn how
to count the points included in the tricks your team
has taken and be shown how scores are recorded.
Then, after you learn how to take tricks and count
points, experienced players will help you identify and
evaluate the meld points and the strength of each
hand. Our club is a warm and welcoming group. We
get together every Thursday afternoon for a casual,
friendly game. Join us to keep those little grey cells
humming. If you are coming or have a question, please
call Jane Daly at 703-743-1372.

And Tears
Walter (Wally) Edward Szuminski , age 86, died on 31
July 2016 at the Village of Orchard Woods in Winchester, VA. Wally and Elsie were married in Hazelton,
PA on 22 May 1965. He is survived by his wife Elsie,
his daughter, Joanne Marie Szuminski, son, Walter
John Szuminski, daughter-in-law, Bonnie Szuminski
and grandchildren, McKala Marie and Austin James
Szuminski.
Wally joined the CIA in 1950 and was an exceptional
Technical Operations Officer. His career path took him
to almost every Continent and over 75 countries over
a 30 year period. On 14 September 1960, Wally and
two other officers were arrested in Cuba while working on a Secret Operation and spent 949 days in Cuban prison along with Batista supporters before being
released in 1963. He was awarded the Distinguished
Intelligence Cross in April 1979 by Admiral Stansfield
Turner, then Director of the CIA.
After his retirement Wally worked as a guest speaker
for the Operational Training Unit telling his many stories and experiences and showing slides to the young
Technical Officers starting their careers.
Wally’s hobbies included ham radio operator, wood
working and general aviation flying. He helped create
the now defunct Capital Flying Club, which was in
operation for 35 years. Wally also owned and flew
his own plane and enjoyed taking short trips with his
family.

What Is In The Color Of A Tee?
Golfers are always attempting to hit longer and
straighter shots to get more distance from their
drives. They buy the newest version of drivers, they
utilize the best and longest hitting golf balls; they take
lessons to learn a better swing to achieve that longest,
straightest drive. Have you ever thought about achieving this concept from a different approach? Teeing
it Forward. Tee it Forward allows a golfer (male or
female) to move forward on the tee box according to
their drive distance.
There is a formula to obtain this distance allowing a
golfer to achieve that positive feeling once again by
reaching the hole in regulation. By Teeing it Forward,
you as a golfer will now hit fewer shots and allow
yourself the opportunity to play a round of golf closer
to regulation. Thereby, bringing down your handicap
index.
Perhaps it is approaching the time for Heritage Hunt
to reconsider our tee specifications. Instead of indicating Men play from Blue/White/Gold and Ladies
from the Red tees, perhaps our golf club should eliminate the gender specification and simply state our tees
as Black/Blue/White/Gold/Red/Green. The color is
irrelevant; the average driving distance is the key. Did
you realize that Heritage Hunt already has a slope rating for the Ladies tees from the Gold and Green tees?
It is important to remember that a Handicap Index is
just a mathematical representation of potential ability,
and we need to make a conversion to the set of tees
we play and then an additional adjustment if we are
competing against a player who is playing from a different set of tees so that an equitable competition can
be played. (Section 3-5 USGA Handicap System) [Our
Golf Pro makes these adjustments automatically for us
currently.]
Golfers playing by Teeing It Forward will also assist
with pace of play. Being able to reach the green with
fewer strokes allows a player to play more efficiently
and quickly.
Additional ideas to speed up the pace of play include:
1) Ditch the head covers. Taking head covers on and
off all day is a serious time drain. 2) Mixed foursome?
Forward-tee players should ride with other forwardtee players. Back tees with back tees. 3) Only mark
a short putt to clean it. 4) Approximate yardages instead of walking them off. 5) Waiting? Take as many
practice swings/strokes as you like. Your turn…. You
get ONE. 6) Always be moving forward. If you have
to double back for anything—bag, cart, clubs—you
are losing time. 7) Always have a spare ball handy.
8) Unless the cart is going to or from a tee box, there
should NEVER be more than one person in it. 9) Glean
as much knowledge as you can about your next shot
while approaching it. 10) Jokes and stories are best
told after teeing off, not before. Otherwise you are
interrupting another player’s preparation.
Your Handicap Committee hopes that you are enjoying
the 2016 golf season and hope these reminders will
be of assistance for a most enjoyable round of golf at
Heritage Hunt.
