Lantana Women’s Golf Association-Rally for the Cure
to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation
The Lantana Women’s Golf Association is hosting its 9th Annual
Rally for the Cure Golf Tournament on October 4th at the Lantana
Golf Club. This event is open to the public and will benefit the Susan
G. Komen Foundation. For more information please go to

Fulfilling the Promise
Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G.
Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast
cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G.
Komen® and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen has invested
more than $2.5 billion to fulfill our promise, working to end breast cancer in the U.S. and
throughout the world through ground-breaking research, community health outreach,
advocacy and programs in more than 30 countries.
Progress in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Since 1982, Komen has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against
breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping
to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors. We are proud of our
contribution to some real victories:
t More early detection and effective treatment– Currently, about 70 percenft of women
40 and older receive regular mammograms, the single most effective screening tool
to find breast cancer early. Since 1990, early detection and effective treatment have
resulted in a 34 percent decline in breast cancer mortality in the U.S.
t More hope –In 1980, the 5-year relative survival rate for women diagnosed with early
stage breast cancer (cancer confined to the breast) was about 74 percent. Today, that
number is 99 percent.
t More research – The federal government now devotes more than $850 million each
year to breast cancer research, treatment and prevention (compared to $30 million in
1982).
t More survivors – Currently, there are about 3 million breast cancers survivors, the
largest group of cancer survivors in the U.S.

What's happening around town!
The waiting is over! Whole Foods is open in Highland Village. Are
you excited?? With the recent opening of Market Street and the
future Kroger Signature (plus gas!! best part as far as I'm
concerned) residents in our area now have a plethora of choices
for grocery shopping. That's great right? I think so. But will they
all break the bank? Someone posted a fabulous link recently on
the Lantana Face book page about how to shop at Whole Foods
without spending your whole paycheck. In the spirit of sharing
valuable information we thought it would be a good share it
again.

Fruits & Veggies More Matters Month
Eating fruits and vegetables provides many health benefits. People
who eat a healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables
can help lower their risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and
some types of cancer. Eating healthy can also help prevent obesity
and high blood pressure.
Even with this knowledge, many people don’t eat enough fruits and vegetables.
Only 1 in 3 adults eat the recommended amount of fruits every day.
Only 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended amount of vegetables every day.
Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits can help you:
t Lower your risk for heart disease and some types of cancer
t Maintain or reach a healthy weight
t Keep your body strong and active
Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day:
t Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.
t Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time so they’re ready for quick, healthy snacks.
t Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week.
Everyone knows that eating fruits and vegetables is important for good health, but most of us still
aren’t getting enough. How many should I eat each day? Everyone is different so use this tool to see
what’s right for you.

Look to next month for some
great opportunities to get
together with friends and family
to celebrate the change of the
seasons.
Fun party ideas for October:
Bonfire Night – As it starts to cool off a bit next month plan a bonfire party! Whether in your
backyard built-in pit or in a portable one on the driveway gather friends and neighbors (kids
optional ☺) and sit around the fire. You don’t need a ton of food. Have it after dinner and
serve drinks and snacks or desert only. What kid or adult for that matter doesn’t like
smores??
Chili Chow-Down Party – National Chili month is celebrated in October. Test out your
favorite recipe on your friends or have everyone bring a sample of theirs! Make it a contest
between red and white. Winner gets the golden ‘wooden spoon’ award!
Scarecrow Party – A simple twist on the regular run of the mill Halloween parties. Have
everyone dress up as a scarecrow in honor of the Fall Season! Hold this party outside in your
yard or garden and decorate with corn stalks and hay bales. Roast corn on the cob over open
fires and add a few corn chips and salsa. You will have a real ‘corny theme’ to be sure!!
Dinner Party for the Dearly Departed – It’s that time of year when everyone starts gearing
up for formal social gatherings so why not start early? Have your guests get dressed up and
come to a ‘dinner for the dead.’ Low lighting and candles will give you some spooky
ambiance. Add some creative looking food prep, bloody martinis or marys, maybe even a
scary looking butler and you have a winner!
Fireside Ghost Story Party – A bonfire party for kids! Gather the neighborhood kids together
and have several adults tell ghastly ghost stories. If you don’t know any there are a ton of
books out there with scary short stories. Having the storyteller in costume and character voice
is a must! Make sure everyone has a flashlight to shine out into the dark too. Maybe there
could be a game of flashlight tag…do they even do that these days??

Apples
Come fall, sweet, crunchy apples abound in markets everywhere. Find delicious ways to get your apple
a day with a new recipe. There are a million out there from salads and main dishes to mouth watering
desserts! Want to learn more about some of the dozens of apples available out there and what to use them
for? Check out Which Apples Are Best?
Note: When it comes to cooking with apples, it may be helpful to know the following:
1 pound of apples = 2 large, 3 medium, or 4 to 5 small apples
1 pound of apples = 3 cups peeled and sliced apples
Here are 10 interesting facts you probably didn’t know about
apples, the quintessential American fruit (after all, the phrase
isn’t “as American as pumpkin pie…”):

More than 2,500 varieties of apples are grown in the United States, but
only the crabapple is native to North America.
Apples contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol and are a good source of
fiber.
Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit.
Apples ripen six to 10 times faster at room temperature than if they are
refrigerated.
Apple varieties range in size from a little larger than a cherry to as large
as a grapefruit. The largest apple ever picked weighed 3 pounds.
Apples harvested from an average tree can fill 20 boxes that weigh 42
pounds each.
Apples are a member of the rose family.
The top apple producers around the world are China, United States,
Turkey, Poland and Italy. Apples account for 50 percent of international
deciduous fruit tree production.
A peck of apples weighs 10.5 pounds. A bushel of apples weighs about 42
pounds.
It takes about 36 apples to create one gallon of apple cider.
One Bowl Apple Cake
Ingredients:
2 eggs
1 3/4 cups sugar
2 heaping teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup oil
6 medium Gala, Fuji or Honey Crisp apples
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, mix the eggs, sugar, cinnamon and oil. Peel and slice the
apples and add to mixture in bowl (coating as you go to keep apples from turning brown.) Mix together the
baking soda and flour then add to the ingredients in the bowl. Mix well (best with a fork) until all of the
flour is absorbed by the wet ingredients. Pour mixture into a greased 9x13 or two 9in round pans. Bake for
approximately 55 minutes.
