The large majority of U.S. soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan are assigned to a “home base” in the U.S. Many of the U.S. soldiers assigned to a U.S. base make a flight stop at or train for combat at one the overseas bases listed below. Most of those seriously wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan are initially brought to the U.S. military hospital, Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, which is near Ramstein and is the largest U.S. military hospital outside the U.S.. The combat zones are also supplied via many of the U.S. bases listed below. Accordingly, the importance of the U.S. bases abroad to the U.S. war efforts is even greater than reflected in this extensive casualty of U.S. soldiers assigned to a “home base” abroad.
