Courage and Commitment to the Cause Senator Ernie Chambers’ legendary 40 year fight against the death penalty resulted in its aboli on in Nebraska in 2015. Senator Chambers is a mo va ng speaker who welcomes the opportunity to speak to
those who are figh ng the death penalty in the courts one case at a me.
Senator Ernie Chambers graduated from Creighton University with a B.A. in history, with minors in Spanish
and Philosophy. In 1979, he completed his J.D. from Creighton University School of Law. His career as legislature began in the 70s, when he was elected to represent North Omaha’s 11th district. For over 40
years, he has fought to repeal the Death Penalty in Nebraska. At the start of every legisla ve session
Senator Chambers introduced a bill to repeal capital punishment. Finally, the Nebraska State Senate
passed LB 268 to eliminate capital punishment in Nebraska. On May 26, 2015, Governor Pete Ricke s vetoed the bill. However, on May 27, 2015, the day following the veto, the state Senate brought the bill to a
vote, and with a vote of 30-to-19 the veto was overwri en; making Nebraska the 19th state to eliminate
the death penalty.
The Capital Case Defense Seminar Schedule
California A orneys for Criminal Jus ce (CACJ) and the California Public Defenders’ Associa on (CPDA) are pleased to invite you to par cipate
in the 2016 Capital Case Defense Seminar (CCDS). The CCDS is an intensive educa onal opportunity for anyone involved in, or considering
taking on, the defense of a capital case. It is designed not only for lawyers, but also for mi ga on specialists, paralegals, inves gators, and
experts working in capital defense. The CCDS will also include sessions addressing murder and felony charges other than capital cases.
The CACJ/CPDA Capital Case Defense Seminar is the largest of its kind in the na on. CCDS is unique in that it offers lectures as well as specialized workshops that give par cipants the chance to brainstorm and exchange informa on with other par cipants. Experienced prac oners
in any jurisdic on and those just entering the field can benefit from the lectures and workshops featuring experienced lawyers and experts,
from both California and across the na on.
TRACKS: This year we have once again created a number of specific learning tracks that par cipants may choose to a end. While you need not
a end all sessions in a par cular track, the tracks for the most part are set up so that each session builds off the earlier session. This year we
are offering the following tracks: Trial, Post-Convic on, Forensic, Inves ga ve, and Mental Health
CASE CONSULTATION WORKSHOP: This year we will con nue to provide case consulta ons for those who would like to consult with a faculty
member, either one-on-one or as a team. We will try to assign a faculty member with exper se in an area of concern for you. For example, if
you are having difficulty uncovering the trauma in your client’s life history, the faculty member will a empt to address this concern and also
try to iden fy sessions during the conference that may be beneficial for you to a end. You must request a case consulta on in advance by
submi ng the completed ques onnaire; there will be no opportuni es to “walk-in” to a case consulta on at the door. Approximately one
week prior to the conference, you will receive an email with the name and contact number of the faculty member who will facilitate your
case consulta on.
