Who would have thought?
River to River Relay turns 20
by Brad Dillard, Race Director
W
ho would have thought that a
relay race that began as a lark
would have grown to be such a staple of the Midwest running scene 20
years later. Gordon Pitz, race
founder and race director emeritus,
can only stand back in amazement
at how the race has grown in popularity. Two thousand seven was the
20th running of the Relay and produced another amazing day of memories for several thousand runners
and volunteers alike. Over 2000
runners navigated the roads of
southern Illinois helped on by an
incredibly loyal group of race volunteers led by the relay’s volunteer
coordinator, Lee Holland.
The 20th running brought back
to Southern Illinois race founders
Gordon and Joann Pitz as well as
race publicist Judi McHose, who
spends countless hours assembling
the relay’s Information and Results
Book. Two thousand seven was also
my first official year as race director, and I specifically want to thank
my predecessor, race director Keith
McQuarrie, for all of his help and
insight.
Two thousand sevem saw a
change in the overall winner of the
relay as 180 Energy Runners #2 (St.
Louis, Mo.) knocked the winner of
the three previous relay’s, St. Sebastian’s Disciples (Chicago, Ill.), from
the top spot. 180 Energy Runners #2
finished in 7:25:41 with St. Sebastian Disciples 13 minutes behind in
7:38:40. Right on the heels of St.
Sebastian Disciples was Fleet Feet
Racing (St. Charles, Mo.) with a
time of 07:40:31.
The weather for the relay was
exceptional albeit a little warm by
the end of the day in Golconda. Fortunately, there were no floods, rock
slides, bridge construction or other
such obstacles to maneuver as had
happened at times in previous years.
There were no significant race related injuries that we are aware of,
which is due, in large part, to the
excellent work of Dennis Karnes
and his staff of medical personnel.
Dennis’s efforts over the last few
years to expand the relay’s staff of
EMTs goes unnoticed by most runners until they are in need of medical services. Virtually all of the
relay’s exchange zones now have
medical coverage as well as several
mobile staff members patrolling the
race course with Dennis available to
respond and/or coordinate any medical emergencies that arise.
A special thank you also goes
out to the relay’s race communications coordinator, Bob Giacomo.
Bob’s group of over 70 amateur
radio operators provides continuous
communications coverage for the
race director, medical staff, and volunteers from start to finish. Cell
phones don’t work along many
stretches of the relay’s remote routes
but the amateur radio staff is able to
make sure that any problems or
questions that develop along the race
course are quickly conveyed to the
proper person to ensure the relay
continues without disruption. Every
year a few problems do develop
along the race course that we are
able to quickly address by forwarding the information to law enforcement personnel, thanks to the work
of Bob’s staff.
Additional race results include a
return to first place in the Women’s
Division by Shut Up and Run (St.

Louis, Mo.) finishing in a time of 9:49:25. Second place went to
Girls Heart Rockets (Urbana, Ill.) at 10:01:50, followed in a distant third by Baptist Buns on the Run (Harrisburg, Ill.) with a
time of 10:53:55.
The Masters Division was dominated by Fleet Feet Sports
40+ (St. Charles, Mo.), which bested the rest of the Masters
Division field for the second year in row with a time of 8:00:47.
Weakest Link (St. Charles, Mo.) improved from third to second
place this year with a time of 9:08:04 followed by Fleet Footed
Fanatics (Wheaton, Ill.) at 10:27:55.
The Mixed Division Field was won by Murphy’s Moonlight
Milers (Park Ridge, Ill.) for the 5th consecutive year in a time of
8:14:36. There appears to be a dynasty in the making in this
division. Finishing not far behind, however, in second place was
Team Benfield Running (Evansville, Ill.) with a time of 8:21:13
and finally, in third place, was Lactic Acid Junkies (Gurnee, Ill.)
at 8:37:21.
The Women’s Masters Division was won by Unmanned (St.
Louis, Ill.) for the second year in a row with a time of 11:33:19
followed in second place by Rolling Stones (Mascoutah, Ill.) in
12:05:57. In third place was the ever present Tailwinds (Terra
Haute, Ind.) with a time of 12:17:05.
The Handicap Division was a close battle amongst many
teams for the top three spots. Dixie Flyers (St. Petersburg, Fla.)
edged out the rest of the field with a winning time of 7:27:12.
They were followed closely in second place by Los Tortugas
(Albuquerque, N.M.) at 7:34:09, which in turn narrowly edged
Charlie’s Angels (Carbondale, Ill.) at 7:38:47.
The Mixed Masters Division was won by Windrunner—Perpetual Nirvana (Lisle, Ill.) finishing in 8:32:25. The second team
to cross the finish line was last year’s first place finisher No
Walkin Till the Van Passes (Champaign, Ill.) in a time of
8:46:31. Third place was won by perennial award winner Run
Fast, Drink Beer Sooner (St. Louis, Mo.) with a time of 9:19:03.
The Corporate Division was won by CNA “C” (Chicago,
Ill. ) in a time of 9:15:41 with I Think I Need a BEER! (St.
Louis, Mo.) finishing second in 9:53:51. 16 Cheeks to the Wind
(Argonne, Ill.) captured third place with a time of 10:06:53. The
Corporate Handicap Division was won again this year by Stray
Cats (Peoria, Ill.) with a time of 8:17:49. Finishing a distant second was Square “D” (Lexington, Ky.) in 9:03:22 followed by
the Busch Mountain Runners (St. Louis, Mo.) at 9:29:22.
The 21st running of the River to River Relay will be on Saturday, April 19, 2008. We look forward to another great year
and look forward to enjoying the relay with all the great friends
from past races. We also look forward too seeing the joy (and
sometimes pain) on the faces of runners participating in the
relay for the first time. We will continue to try and tweak different aspects of the relay to make sure it continues to be one of
the premier running in the events in the Midwest. Please visit
the relay’s Web site at http://rrr.olm.net for 2008 race information including application dates for the 2009 relay.
Thanks
The River to River Relay depends for its success on the help of countless individuals. Roughly 400 individuals help
on the day of the race itself, not counting the area residents who cheer on the teams or provide refreshments to tired
runners. Several area agencies provide us with help every year. Students from Pope County High School directed traffic in Golconda and helped to clean up after the race, and the Williamson County Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops who
distributed T-shirts and aid at the finish line. The Illinois Chiropractic Sports Council, Southern lllinois University Carbondale students in the Physical Therapist Assistant program, and masssage therapy students from John A. Logan College provided relief at the finish line to runners who arrive with battered legs, and the Golconda Main Street Association, coordinated by Paul Broadway, lined up the refreshments.
The safety of the runners is our first concern, and we receive invaluable assistance in this respect from the Southern
Illinois Amateur Radio Society, under the guidance of Bob Giacomo, which provides essential communications support. Sherrif A.J. Sparks of Pope County, Johnson County Sheriff Elry Faulkner, Union County Sheriff Jim Nash, and
Golconda Police Chief Larry Fisher have been wonderfully cooperative. The Illinois State Police provided invaluable
support through their command and communications vehicle and the willingness of patrol officers to help out where
runners’ safety was threatened. In addition, a great deal of help and support is given by the Jonesboro office of the
National Forest Service (USDA) and from the Illinois State Tree Nursery. That all of these officials are unfailingly
cheerful makes the work of the organizers much easier.
The race officials at each exchange have established a well deserved reputation for their friendliness and devotion to
duty. Many of the exchanges are staffed by the same people every year. Obviously, we could not continue the relay
without them. A list of volunteers who have helped for at least three years is included elsewhere in this booklet.
The relay depends on financial help from our sponsors. Williamson County Tourism Bureau, under the guidance of
executive director Bo Emery, has offered us both financial support and important logistical help for many years.

River to River Relay Hall of Fame
E
very year we invite teams to submit the names of runners who have
made significant contributions to their teamÌs efforts in the relay. The
River to River Relay hall of Fame was started as a way to recognize individuals whose performance as runners or as organizers provides an essential motivational spark for their team. If you think someone on your team
deserves this recognition, we invite you to submit a letter detailing the persons achievements and involvement in the relay. The list of runners admitted to the Hall of Fame will be included in the 2008 Information Booklet.
