Multisystem Powerhead
In April 2004, Renfe Larga Distancia awarded the
consortium Talgo-Bombardier Transportation an
order for the delivery of 44 power heads for high
speed passenger operations in Spain.
An additional order for 46 powerheads followed in September 2005. The high speed electric powerhead can operate
under two voltages and on two track gauges. With these
powerheads, neither locomotives nor bogies need to be
changed at the borders of 3 kV DC and 25 kV AC networks
or when Iberian (1668 mm) and standard gauge (1435 mm)
tracks meet.
At speeds of up to 250 km/h, the electric powerhead
delivers 2.4 MW and 2 MW on 25 kV AC and 3 kV DC
networks respectively. Traction motors and gearboxes are
fully suspended in the variable gauge bogies. The powerheads are fitted both with wheel disk brakes and with
regenerative and rheostatic brakes.
Locomotives
The new powerheads comply with all the current standards,
such as TSI and TCN, and are fitted with conventional and
ETCS train protection systems. To ensure effective servicing and maintenance, the powerheads have remote wireless diagnostics systems. The Renfe S 130 electric powerheads are the ideal complement to the existing fleet of
S 102 and S 112 very high speed passenger trains in Spain.
