I continue to be in awe of the tremendous power that service has for its participants. It marks for those ordained as rabbis and those invested as cantors the end of the years at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. It also marks the formal beginning of something that is more than just a career. Though a dozen years have passed, I continue to feel no less a sense of gratitude to the those who helped me along the path of my journey to the rabbinate -- both my teachers at the College-Institute and my teachers, staff and congregants, in my student internship at Temple Shaaray Tefila in Manhattan. The years I spent as an intern left an indelible mark on my rabbinic personage. In the past year we, as a congregation, have been blessed with the opportunity to have the same type of experience in welcoming to our midst a rabbinic student who is walking along that same path of training and preparation I walked at Shaaray Tefila. And we have been richly blessed to have one of finest o-r rabbinic candidates in Jonah Pesner. True, Jonah has been with us for two years. But it has only been in this past year that he has served as our Rabbinic intern. I have little doubt that as a congregation we have been, as I have been personally, enriched deeply, and perhaps indelibly, by the ways in which Jonah has touched our lives. From our youngest children to the elders of our congregation, Jonah has been a teacher, a spiritual leader and a caring friend. He now prepares to head back to Israel for an extra year of study at the Hebrew University. As Jonah and Dana prepare to make this exciting journey, we wish them all the best. Thank you for your boundless energy, your depth of wisdom and your willingness to share yourself with us. I thank you personally and shall always cherish our friendship, which began during my time as a rabbinic intern over a dozen years ago. May you go forth in peace and return in peace. It has been a privilege and honor, for me personally, and for Emeth as a part of the House of Israel to share a part of the journey with you. On Friday, June 9th, as we welcome our Senior League to the bimah for their annual Senior League service, we will also have the opportunity to thank and say goodbye to Jonah in a more formal fashion. Join us for this special tribute! In the months ahead, we shall be blessed not once, but twice, with the honor of welcoming two more rabbinic students to our midst. We have been chosen to host an intern under the Wexner Rabbinic Residence Program for the summer. And so, for six weeks this summer we shall welcome Daniel Levin, who is entering his fifth year at HUC-JlR. In September we shall officially welcome Jonah's successor, Renee Goldberg, who will be a fourth-year student at HUC-JlR. Renee will step into many of the same roles Jonah has fulfilled, and will no doubt also create her own paths of action and involvement in our midst. How richly blessed we are as a congregation to have the privilege of helping shape rabbis of the future and the blessing of enjoying all they have to offer in the present. ~ Q. ~ ADULT KALLAH - 1995 2 lj ================================ TEMPLE EMETH BULLETIN I~~t~ (201)833-1322 School 833-8466 Eric: S. Precycling means reducing environmentally wasteful packagipg before you buy. • Buy eggs in recycled cardboard. not styrofoam cartons. Buy items like cereal and dry goods in recycled boxes. Recycled boxes are gray on the inside. Buy in bulk. it's cheaper and uses minimal packaging. • Buy beverages in recyclable glass or aluminum containers. avoid plastic "squeezable" containers which are dramatically non-biodegradable. BASED ON"SO SIMPLE THINGS YOU CAN 00 TO SAVE 1HE EAKIH" 3 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello, I'm Judith Yablonka, newly elected President of our wonderful Temple. I have not yet had the pleasure of meeting many of you, and so I'd like to introduce myself. My husband Gidon and I have been proud and happy residents of Teaneck for 21 years and members of Temple Emeth for almost 20. I have been employed as a Dental Hygienist for almost 30 years, and currently work here in Teaneck four days a week. Our. twin daughters will be graduating from Teaneck High School this June, and will be attellding college in the fall. When I · think·· back to those days many years ago when we first joined Temple Emeth, I remember that we did so to attend services and because we felt that as Jews we should support a synagogue in our community. Over the years as we attended more Temple social, cultural and educational activities as well, our circle of friends came to include many Temple members. We have made deep and lasting friendships as a result of our Temple involvement. This is our spiritual home--and it has become "family" in every sense of the word. We are blessed here at Temple Emeth with such riches! We have exceptional Clergy and staff, enthusiastic and creative volunteers, a supportive and generous congregation and a schedule fiIled with Services, programs and activities to meet almost every need. Come and enjoy and benefit from all that we have to offer! I can only wish for you the great and enriching experience that being an involved Temple Emeth member has been to me in my own life. .J look forward to meeting each of you, and if I can be of service to you, please do can on me. Your comments, suggestions and concerns are always welcome. ;3f5~~ MESSAGE FROM THE CANTOR It. is · hard to believe how much has happened in my life since last summer. During this time I graduated from Cantorial School, moved into a new home in a new community, began my service as a fun time Invested Cantor, and as if theses things were not enough, I also got married. Needless to say, this has been an exciting and busy year. This y~ar could also have been incredibly difficult and stressful had it not been for the overwhelming support which I have received from so many people. I have been truly blessed to become part of such a wonderful congregation. In just one year this congregation has become nothing less than a family to my husband and myself. I have the pleasure of working with such competent professionals and lay leaders, each of whom ca.r e so much about the work .they do, they are constantly going above and beyond the can of duty. Once a week, I am fortunate enough to work with a junior choir that lights up my day, and an adult choir made up of people who, after a long day at work find the energy to rehearse, and put up with my sense of humor! I must admit that one's first year in a full time pulpit can at times, be confusing. There are so many things to learn and even more people to get to now. I often wonder if someone were to ask me as many questions as I have asked Rabbi Gurvis this past year, would I have had the patience to answer them an? Would I have been so understanding and accepting of one who was just beginning to learn the things that I already learned more than ten years ago? Rabbi Gurvis' patience and understanding have helped me so much in the past year and they are greatly appreciated. Thank you an from Avi and myself as we look forward to a bright future at Temple Emeth. 4 MESSAGE FROM THE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER My staff and I were excited that this year's dinner dance was in celebration of the Early Childhood Center. Unfortunately, I cannot share my experience with you, since my Bulletin article was written before the event. While writing a poem for the celebration, I began to reflect on my role as ECC's director for the past four years. I feel very fortunate to be a part of the success ECC has experienced. In 1991 four classrooms were utilized for our pre-school. We now use all seven rooms. We added a four-year-old class, a three-year-old class, and a transitional two's program. Our staff has increased from 9 to 14 teachers. Our enrollment has increased from 79 to 102 children. I attribute this growth to many factors. The school has a philosophy which respects the developmental needs of our young children and has an exceptional teaching staff. Our teachers are caring, dedicated professionals who plan curriculum that is experiential and interesting for young children. We value parent involvement. Parents participate through committee work and classroom participation. Our curriculum focuses on the celebration of our Jewish holidays. Children leave our school proud of their Jewish heritage and are eager to share their experiences with their families. We celebrate Shabbat every Friday in the classrooms. We meet bi-weekly with Rabbi Gurvis and Cantor Zvulun to sing and hear wonderful stories about our Jewish heritage. We also have family events to celebrate Succot, Chanukah and Shabbat. We have grown to be a family at Temple Emeth's ECC. Our school is a warm, friendly environment where teachers, parents and children work harmoniously together. Barbara Sabella, our dedicated school administrator is invaluable in assisting parents and supporting myself and our staff. It is a pleasure to work with Rabbi Gurvis, Cantor Zvulun and Lisa Barzilai as they are incredibly helpful and caring. Marion, Tsilla and Joan in the front office and Arthur are always there when we need a helping hand. There have been so many members of the Board of Trustees who have been involved with ECC. Judy Yablonka, Cyndy Friedland, Deborah Taylor, Carrie Golden, Mindy Egber and Debbie Rutz have provided leadership to the ECC Committee. Over the years our committee members have volunteered their time ~nd talent to make Temple Emetb a special place for children to come to school. I thank you a l l . / . JOB SEARCH NETWORK AT JCC A new service will be of great assistance to members of our community. The Job Search Network (JSN), at the JCC on the Palisades in Tenafly, has been formed for the sole purpose of helping residents obtain jobs. It is staffed entirely by volunteers, identifies available employment opportunities and makes every effort to fill them with candidates who have shared their resumes and other appropriate information with the Network. There are no fees to employers or candidates. JSN can assist with resume writing and career counseling. If you have any leads on job opportunities or wish to refer potential employers or candidates to us, we may be reached at 569-7900 extension 438, 9 am to 5 pm. Amy Drill and Sidney Schonfeld, Co-chairs JSN SHAVOUT "Jews-by-Choice..J ews-by-Chance" Reaffirming our Jewish Commitments As the holiday of Shavuot nears, we are again reminded of the precious tradition Judaism offers those who actively seek -to understand and embrace it On Shavuot, we commemorate the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. The Jewish commitment of Jews-by-Choice can be a powerful inspiration to those born "Jews-by-Chance." We all benefit by the presence of those who consciously and passionately choose to be Jewish. As the highlight of Shavuot services, it is customary to read the Megillah of Ruth, which includes a deeply moving passage: "Entreat me not to leave you and to return from following after you; for where you go I will go; and where you lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people and your God my God" (1:16-17). These words remain a powerful expression of Jewish commitment, for they were originally uttered by Ruth because of her desire to CQnvert and commit to Judaism. This commitment to Judaism and the Jewi~h people is the reason we celebrate Shavuot. This is the festival of the "Giving of the Law."
