The premises are small and utterly unpretentious, the
food is spectacular and delicious: the Japanese-Hawaiian
fusion cuisine served at the Hoku needs no added bells
and whistles and can hold its own with anything Helsinki’s
big names have to offer. In the final analysis, everything is
just right: the minimalistic décor, the attentive service,
the tasty food (the scrumptious bibimbap accom­pan­ied by
a “Big Wave” beer is wonderful!) and the affordable prices.

An erstwhile bank has been transformed into a café
­lavishly decorated with sculptures and paintings that are
an open invitation to stare in wonderment. The Aschan
is a spot where young business folk come for a light lunch
(salads, soups and sandwiches), families relax over coffee and a slice of cake (speciality: satukakku) and tourists
take a break from the rigours of shopping. One particularly ­attractive feature: at lunchtime, there’s as much tasty
sushi as you can eat for 15 euro. The cheerful staff are always ready for a joke. If you want to make the Asian sushi
chef happy, take her in a bar of Toblerone – she’ll love it!

Gereizt an dieser Bar hat uns vor allem das kühle und dezente Interieur der finnischen Designerin Joanna Laajisto. Ein Blick auf die Getränkekarte tat das Übrige. «Big
Pimpin’»? Ja, Sie haben richtig gelesen. Was schmutzig
tönt, basiert auf einem simplen Konzept: Die Getränke
im Michel tragen alle die Namen berühmter Songs – und
sie schmecken hervorragend!
What we particularly liked about this bar was its cool
and subdued interior decoration by Finnish designer
Joanna Laajisto. A look at the drinks menu did the rest.
“Big Pimpin’”? Yes, you read it correctly. It might sound a
bit smutty, but it’s based on a simple concept: the drinks at
the Michel are all named after well-known songs, and they
taste excellent!

fresh salads, spelt muesli
with exquisite soya yog­hurt (there’s that, too!),
the home-baked bread
and rooibos latte (special­
ity of the house) that are so

Dies erkannte auch Jackie
Kennedy. Als sie sich 1960
in einem MarimekkoKleid für «Sports Illustrated» ablichten liess, verhalf sie der Marke über
Nacht zu weltweitem Ansehen. Heute steht Marimekko längst nicht mehr
nur für bunte Kleidung,
sondern führt beispielsweise auch Geschirr, Frottierwäsche und Küchen­
utensilien im Sortiment.

the rest.” The colourful and
lively patterns produced by
this Finnish label exude not

Jackie Kennedy was among
the women to realise this:
when she was photographed in a Marimekko
dress for “Sports Illustrated” in 1960, she helped the
brand to achieve worldwide
acclaim overnight. Today,
the Marimekko range contains not only colourful
clothing, but also tableware, towels and kitchen
utensils. A few years back,
its famous flower prints
could even be seen decorating a Finnair aircraft.

Old indoor markets are always charming and Hel­
sinki’s is a very special gem. Right next to Market Square
by the harbour, it has been selling produce, including
fresh fish, vegetables, reindeer and cheese specialities,
herbs, tea and fresh pastries, since 1889. The best place to
take a break in this maritime setting is at the Café Story
or at Robert’s (super coffee and the “best cinnamon roll in
town”). Visitors should also sample one of the typical

Kiasma ist eine Anlehnung an das finnische Wort «Chiasma» (biologische Überkreuzung) und eine Anspielung
auf den mal runden, mal eckigen Bau des Museums –
ein Kunstwerk in sich! Zum Kiasma-Konzept gehören
nebst Kunst- und Fotoausstellungen auch Performances, Lesungen und Theater. Bis Ende Januar ist Jani
Leinonen mit seiner «School of Disobedience» zu Besuch
und bereichert den Besucher mit revolutionären Ideen,
die Welt zu verbessern. Der Museumsshop ist auch einen
Abstecher wert.
The name Kiasma is taken from the Finnish word for
“chiasma” (a biological crossing-over) and is an allusion
to the shape of the museum – curved here, angular
there – which is a work of art in its own right! In addition
to exhibitions of art and photography, the Kiasma
concept also embraces performances, readings and
theatre. Until the end of January, it is featuring Jani Leinonen with his “School of Disobedience” and rewarding
visitors with revolutionary ideas on how to improve the
world. The museum shop is also worth a look.

(über insgesamt zwei Brücken). Sie gelangen so auf
einen Hügel mit russischen Kanonen im Nordwesten
der Insel. Kaum Leute und freie Sicht auf Helsinki!
Every Helsinki local will quite rightly recommend the
visitor take a day trip out to the island of Suomenlinna.
And it’s definitely something you should do! In addition to
the fortress, guided tours and various cafés, the UNESCO
World Heritage site offers plenty of green spaces and lovely
views. Tip: when you come off the ferry, keep to the right
for about 10 minutes (over two bridges) and you’ll come to
a hill with Russian canons in the north-west of the island.
There are hardly any people there and you have an unimpeded panorama of the city!
