Ein exotisches Image, hochkarätige Hotels, Konferenzzentren und erfahrene Dienstleister vor Ort. Barbados ist schon seit vielen Jahren eines der wichtigsten karibischen
Business-Ziele. Jetzt ist der Inselstaat, wo der berühmte Mount Gay Rum hergestellt
wird, auch von Frankfurt aus mit Direktflügen wieder leichter zu erreichen.

enn es um Hochprozentiges geht, gibt es
einen Mann, auf den man sich
verlassen kann: Bevor sich
James Bond in „Casino Royale“ Martinis mixen lässt, bestellt er einen Mount Gay
Rum mit Club Soda - die etwas gediegenere, Gentleman-kompatible Version einer Rum-Cola.
Den Ritterschlag durch den
stilsichersten Agenten seiner
Majestät hat sich die Barbados-Hausmarke
verdient.
Selbst wenn es sich dabei nur
um schnödes Product Placement handeln sollte. Immerhin rühmt sich die Distillerie
Karibik: Ein einzigartiges Klima
während des ganzen Jahres.

Zeit zum Verfeinern. Vier
Rumproduzenten gibt es auf
Barbados, von denen aber lediglich der Ruf von Mount
Gay dauerhaft aufs Festland
übergeschwappt ist.
Das etwas glamouröse Image von Barbados hängt allerdings nicht mit der weltberühmten Spirituose zusammen, sondern mit dem Überschall-Passagierjet
Concorde, der nicht nur nach New
York, sondern auch in die Inselrepublik zahlungskräftige
Passagiere brachte.
Von 1976 bis 2003 beförderte
das schnellste Passagierflugzeug der Welt Menschen wie
Margaret Thatcher, Madonna, Queen Mum oder Michael
Jackson. Mit 2.333 Kilometern pro Stunde rasten Promis, CEOs und Investmentbanker in 16.000 Metern Höhe am Rand des Weltraums
durch die Stratosphäre. Die
Überschallgeschwindigkeit
ermöglichte eine Ankunftszeit in New York, die durch die
Zeitverschiebung vor der Abflugszeit in London lag. Die
Concorde war die erste funktionierende Zeitmaschine.
Das Überschall-Streckennetz
reichte in der Hochzeit von
Bis 1966 war Barbados eine britische Kolonie.
Rio de Janeiro bis Singapur.
Zuletzt blieb neben den täglichen Flügen von London und
Paris nach New York nur noch
eine British Airways-Verbindung nach Barbados bestehen, das im Winter als Zieldestination für die britische
High Society angeflogen wurde.
2003 war dann endgültig
Schluss. Denn die Concorde
brauchte pro Stunde so viel
Sprit wie ein Jumbo Jet auf
einem ganzen Transatlantikflug und beförderte dabei nur
maximal hundert Passagiere.
Entsprechend kostspielig waren die Tickets.
Auf Barbados kann der Düsenflieger nun am Grantley
Adams International Airport
besichtigt werden. „Barba-
dos Concorde Experience“
heißt die dauerhafte Ausstellung, bei der man das Flugzeug nicht nur betrachten,
sondern aus nächster Nähe
dank eines Flugsimulators
auch selber steuern kann.
Funktionierende
Zeitmaschine
Nach der kurzen Periode der
Überschall-Flugzeuge dauert
es jetzt wieder acht bis neuneinhalb Stunden aus europäischen Städten wie London,
Frankfurt, Amsterdam oder
Stockholm nach Barbados zu
fliegen. Trotzdem registrierte
der Inselstaat während der
ersten sieben Monate diesen
Jahres mit 350.000 Gästen
ein Plus von 8,2 Prozent.

zufrieden. Events wie das
Food & Wine and Rum Festival im November machten die
Destination über das reiche
touristische Angebot hinaus
attraktiv und bereits 2010 legte die Zahl der internationalen
Gäste um 2,6 Prozent zu.
Besonders positiv entwickelt
sich dabei die Nachfrage aus
Deutschland. Über 4.800
deutsche Gäste von Januar
bis Juli 2011 bedeuten ein
Plus von 27,5 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorjahr. „In der
Wintersaison 2010/11 haben
wir besonders von dem am 1.
November 2010 eingeführten
zweiten wöchentlichen Con-
dor-Flug profitiert“, stellt Robert Keysselitz, Vice President Continental Europe der
Barbados Tourism Authority,
fest.
Bis 1966 war Barbados eine
britische Kolonie. Mag die Insel mit Rum, tropischen Temperaturen und feinen Sandstränden auch noch so karibisch anmuten - die Inselkultur ist mindestens ebenso
stark auch britisch geprägt.
Kricket ist Volkssport, die Autos fahren links, und die zahlreichen anglikanischen Kirchen gleichen oft exakt ihren
englischen Vorbildern.
Auf 365 Kirchen kommen
1.200 Rum-Shops, viele liegen übrigens gleich neben
dem Andachtsraum – für die
Zeit nach dem Gottesdienst.
Das Nationalgetränk wird
nicht nur pur genossen, sondern mit Limone, Sirup, Eis
und Muskatnuss zum „Rum
Punch“ gemischt.
Windmühlen dienten
früher dazu Zucker
zu mahlen.
„Wir wissen, dass viele Menschen denken, dass Barbados eine Destination für Sonne, Strandurlaub und relaxen
ist“, fasst Antonia Hinds vom
DMC West Indian International Tours (WITT) das naheliegende Image zusammen,
denn „hier herrscht ja auch
ein für Europäer und Nord-
amerikaner
einzigartiges
sommerliches Klima während des ganzen Jahres“.

Unvergleichlich macht die Insel auch ein standardisierter
Haustyp, der aus der Zeit
nach der Sklavenbefreiung

Südwesten zu den Aussichtspunkten an der raueren
Atlantikküste im Osten fährt,

zusammen stehen. Meist
sticht ein Haus der Siedlung
als besonders farbenfroh und

Barbados has for many years been one of the major Caribbean business tourism destinations.
Now the island state, where the famous Mount Gay Rum is produced, has become easier
to reach again with direct flight connections from Frankfurt as well.

here hard liquor is concerned, there’s one
man you can always rely on.
Before James Bond has his
martinis mixed in the film Casino Royale, he orders a
Mount Gay Rum with club
soda – the rather more elegant, gentleman-like version
of a rum-cola.
The local Barbados tipple
richly deserves to be singled
out by Her Majesty’s most
stylish secret agent, even if
what we’re seeing is nothing
but outright product place-

ment. After all, the distillery
prides itself on being the oldest of its kind in the world –
implying heaps of time for
product refinement. There
are four rum producers in
Barbados, but Mount Gay is
the only one whose reputation has crossed lastingly to
the mainland.
But the rather glamorous image that surrounds Barbados
actually has nothing to do
with the world-famous spirit.
The credit must go instead to
the supersonic passenger jet
Concorde, which flew passengers with deep pockets
not only to New York but to
the island republic as well.
From 1976 to 2003 the

2003 finally marked the end
of the road, because Concorde burned as much fuel in
an hour as a jumbo jet on a

introduced on November 1,
2010,” says Robert Keysselitz, Vice President Continental Europe of the Barbados
Tourism Authority.
Until 1966 Barbados was a
British colony. As Caribbean
as the island may seem, with
its rum, tropical temperatures and fine sandy beaches, its culture bears an at
least equally strong British
stamp. Cricket is a national
pastime, the cars drive on the
left, and the countless Anglican churches could often
easily be mistaken for their
English models.
For every 365 churches there
are 1,200 rum shops – many
of them right next to the
place of worship, for when
the service is over. The national drink is taken not only
pure but also mixed with
lime, syrup, ice and nutmeg
to make rum punch.
“We know many people
think Barbados is a destination for sun, beach holidays
and relaxing,” is the summary of the island’s obvious
image from Antonia Hinds of
DMC West Indian International Tours (WITT), because
“we do have a summery climate all year round that Europeans and North Ameri-
cans find quite unique. But
there are also “top-class hotels, modern conference
centres, unusual venues typical of the island and fringe
programmes such as catamaran trips on which you can
snorkel in sea temperatures
of 26 degrees and marvel at
the colourful underwater
world around Barbados.”
West Indian International
Tours has been in operation
since 1982. In May last year
the DMC handled an event
for motor manufacturer Citroen and six months later an
incentive for the energy services provider Dalkia France.
Early November this year,
WITT is organising the AutismOne/Spectrum Possibilities Conference in Barbados
with around 250 participants.

extremely varied scenery.
“Demand from central Europe used to be higher owing
to the better flight connections,” Nikki King recalls.
“We are now hoping that
Condor’s additional service
from Frankfurt will bring us
more meetings again from
Germany.” A few years ago
the DMC took care of an incentive group with 78 participants for the perfumery
chain Douglas, and this February it had a group of 60 for
the company Malibu, a member of the Absolut Group that
produces a coconut and rum
drink. The purpose of the
five-day stay was to present
and communicate a new
brand image. A catamaran
tour, a jeep safari and a Zipline Adventure were, of
course, part of the incentive
programme.
A safari trip over the tropical
island with a handful of tourists, a cooler box full of rum
punch, plenty of joking and a
little information about the island literally leads over hill
and dale. Vervet monkeys, of
which there are quite a lot in
Barbados, scamper in the
trees. Whoever ventures to
lean their arm out of the jeep
is immediately roundly censured – a necessary precaution given the narrow roads
and the way the locals drive.
“It causes nothing but pain,”
the driver says and, after a
dramatic pause, he continues: “And pain means paperwork. We don’t like paperwork.” It’s a not uncommon
joke in Barbados. The island’s international status as
a tax haven possibly also
stems from the fact that no
one there likes filling in
forms.

scintillating,
brightly coloured fish in the
Caribbean coral reefs.

deposits
Visitors who wish to explore
Barbados in a rather more adventurous way should be
sure to book Aerial Trek Zipline Adventures. A Zipline
cable construction winds its
way through a canopy of ancient giant trees, traversing
six platforms over the kilometre and a half course. Two
karabiners are clipped onto
to a harness around the participants’ hips. Suspended
from steel cables up to 30
metres high, they careen
from platform to platform.
There are eight stations in all
to pass, with the distances
between the platforms
erected in the treetops growing increasingly longer. Two
trained guides wait at each
platform to explain the ecosystem and make sure the
tour runs safely.
Around 600,000 years ago

are no poisonous creatures,
and the relatively restrained
mosquitoes do not transmit
malaria.
Another incomparable feature peculiar to the island are
the wooden chattel houses,
dwellings dating from the period after slave liberation.
Post-1840 the labourers who
did not have enough money
to buy their own plot of land
built their colourful tworoomed houses to be movable and fit onto an oxcart.
When the landowner was no
longer prepared to tolerate
them on his property they
could quickly move on with all
their chattels (movable property). The steep-pitched tin
roof was also hurricane-
proof, for Barbados lies in the
catchment area of Atlantic
hurricanes, even if the last really devastating event took
place half a century ago.

Bridgetown in the southwest
of the island to the viewpoints on the more rugged
Chattel houses
Atlantic coast in the east, the
visitor will cross huge fields
and see chattel houses
grouped together in colourful
settlements with small allotments. One house on the settlement is usually conspicuous for its bright colours and
carefully tended appearance
– the rum shop, as these little
bars are known.
