Gerhard Bringmann since 1993: Initially, this collaboration only focused on the search for bioactive compounds from tropical plants. From this, many joint publication resulted, even a first German-Congolese patent. Today, these joint investigations are imbedded in the research network SFB 630 („Agents against Infectious Diseases“), of which Bringmann is the coordinator. Bringmann and me initiated in 2008 a privately financed excellence scholarship program, BEBUC. It shall give outstanding young people in the Congo the chance to study rapidly and in depth and to pursue an academic career. My most memorable experience during my stay .. it enabled me to learn German, to gain an in-depth understanding of the values of German culture, and to intensify my relations with German colleagues and friends. I continue to maintain and to nurture these friendships both privately and professionally. Dieser Betreuer war Professor, Rektor der Uni und Mitglied des Zentralen Komitees der Kommunistischen Partei. Nach der Rückkehr sagte ich ihm, dass die Thesen über die Unterdrückung der Bauern und Arbeiter im Westen nicht ganz zuzutreffen scheinen. Ich konnte mir eine solche Frechheit leisten, weil ich kurz vor dem Aufenthalt in Deutschland meinen Wohnsitz von Vilnius nach Warschau gewechselt hatte. I have many memorable experiences in Würzburg, all of them have to do with the extraordinary quality of people I got to know. One of those that I am glad to remember was just 2 days before we had to return to our country: I have approved my doctoral examination and the director of the clinic invited myself and my wife to his house to celebrate it. I told my best friend Carlo Schönfeld, that regrettably I could not accept the invitation to the director's house, because I had no babysitter to leave my 1 year-old son, we have not been able to get anybody in the last minute. He immediately told me if I was crazy, and he would stay to take care of my son. He insisted in that, and at the end of the night when we returned to our department we found him sleeping in our couch and my 1 year-old son has been taken care of by him. It was an act of friendship. We have valued it a lot and it remarks that in Würzburg, you can make unconditional friends forever. Wuerzburg is .. a mountain in the course of a river, this city changed my life in an incredible way. Until I got my scholarship from DAAD, the course of my life seemed to have a destination, but it was changed when I have met a new reality. I have built my new road becoming trained and many things that I have received at that time I even maintain, Würzburg gave to me my subspecialty in ophthalmology and opened a different panorama about life. It granted me very sad moments as my father's death during my scholarship as well as very happy news, like my first son's birth. It was also a wonderful experience as young ophthalmologist recently graduated of the university, it taught us, my wife and me, to enjoy life with simplicity and to thank little things that we had at homeland and we didn’t give value until then. My most memorable experience during my stay .. that is certainly the trip we made from Unterdurrbach to Aachen to attend a German Congress of Tropical Medicine. We prepared our old VW Kombi so that our children, from 12 to 5 years old, could all sleep in it, and drove the distance. We slept in tents, one for the children and one for Elena and myself, in a different place each night, and ventured into nearby Holland once. We met Dr. Axel Kroeger, from Heidelberg, who was the only speaker who presented work from Latin America, and we have been friends since then, collaborating in many ways; he actually sent about seven of his students our way for their Habitur work. On the way back, we visited the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation headquarters, where I became closer friends with the Secretary General Prof.Dr. Heinrich Pfeiffer and Dr. Gisela Janetzke; we were hosted by Dr. Gert Schilling, of the University of Bonn, who had worked in Lima for his habitur, and his wife, and attended a reception at the Peruvian Embassy. As the final touches, we had a last day close to Bonn and enjoyed the Phantasialand amusement park, and spent an evening at Dr. Axel Kroeger’s home in Heidelberg. Meine Betreuer waren Prof. Franz Francesco Wiedmann und Prof. Wilhelm Baumgartner. Mein unvergessliches Erlebnis während meines Aufenthaltes .. der erste kurze Aufenthalt als Student in Würzburg, wo ich alles wiederfand, was mein Vater mir erzählt hatte. Er war in Peines Gefängnislager als Kriegsgefangener gewesen und wog, als er aus diesem Lager am Ende des Krieges heimkam, ungefähr 40 Kilo. Und doch hatte er mir immer wieder die gemeinschaftliche Zusammengehörigkeit und die Leistungsanerkennung als deutsche Tugend, die ihm in Italien am meisten fehlte, gelobt.
