Winter Lights
24 January
During long winter evenings the Palmengarten transforms into a miraculous
realm of hibernal fantasy. Hundreds of lights and beams illuminate the gardens creating a mysterious and enthrawling atmosphere. Objects traced out by light along with sound and dynamic video installations inspire a unique dream world
as you stroll, awe-inspired, through the winter gardens. Warm and cold refresh-
ments and snacks are available in the Galleries of the Palmenhaus. Thanks to the FES for much welcome support.
5 p.m. – 8 p.m. 21 January – Camellias
14 February
Marguerite, in Dumas’ novel “The Lady of
the Camellias”, always wore camellias.
And why should she have worn any others? Camellias are splendid! ... and now is the time for the Palmengarten to present its unique collection of Eastern Asian camel-
lias. Our nursery dilingently cares and
provides for our precious plants, guaran-
teeing earliest possible blossom splendor.
18 February – Springtime
6 March
For the springtime exhibition our gardeners
have planted some 60,000 bulbs and corms.
Time for showdown: tulips, daffodils, iris, hyacinths, muscari and crocuses abound in full splendor. Forced birches, forsythias, serviceberry and snowy mespilus comple-
ment the vast floral display. Be surprised to see what ideas Andy Warhol had regarding nature’s early spring resurrection.
In cooperation with Imrich Donath, honorary
consul of the Slovak Republic.

of flowering plants. Breeding and selection
have led to an array of hundreds of thousands
of varieties and sports. The exhibition pre-
sents some popular and some of the newest breeds. The Palmengarten’s yearly spring-
time orchid show and sales.
In collaboation with the German Society of
Orchids Enterprises.

18 – 20 March GRÜNE BÖRSE
At the Palmengarten’s “Green Market ” you
can shop for rare and unique plants. Various specialty garden centers, horti-
culturists, and plant breeders offer their plants for sale along with lots of valuable advice and expertise. BioFrankfurt and its partner organizations present a special exhibition on nature, biodiversity, and
nutrition. The programme includes tours, workshops, and lectures.
27 – 28 March Easter Bunny and Egg Hunt
A favorite first major springtime family
outing ... to the Palmengarten during the Easter holidays! The grounds are profusely covered in spring flowers, buds ready to burst, first tender leaves and first blooming trees and shrubs. Stroll through the galleries
with its colorful azaleas abundantly decorated with floral arrangement of turban buttercups, freesias, tulips with catkin-laced
willow and obscure corkscrew hazels. For children there will be a traditional German Easter EGG HUNT in the Galleries (arranged
by the trusted egg-laying Easter Bunny). Easter Sunday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Easter Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
14 April – AZALEAS
1 May Azaleas abound in their prominent colors –
from intense red, to pink, purple, and white. The most conspicuous specimens from our nurseries are on display at this exhibition in the Galleries. 25 May – SAVANNA
Savannas are among the most diverse
habitats on Earth. In Africa they spread extensively on both sides of the Equator and take up almost half of the continents total surface area. Cradle of mankind, vast herds of wild animals, medicinal plants, home of many important economic plants serving as the basis of existence of millions of people. The savannas of East Africa are particularly well known through the protection measures of the Serengeti savanna of northern Tanzania initiated by the famous late German zoologist and former Director of the Frankfurt Zoo, Dr. Bernhard
Grzimek.
This exhibition focuses on some less known but highly unique and interesting tropical
savannas of West Africa, especially
regarding their ecological and vegetational features and interrelationships.
The exhibition’s topics include: origin of
savannas, cradle of mankind, human
interference and utilization of resources,
possible adaptations to climate change, along with recent concepts of conservation of sustainability of savannas.
18 September
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive
program of tours and activities as well as by a

Three days of celebrations around the ‘Queen of Flowers’. You are welcome to enjoy exquisite foods, concerts, films, guided tours, lectures, children’s pro-
grams etc. Honoring Shakespeare’s 400th birthday anniversary, we include special Elizabethan elements in our floral arrangements.

21 August Art at the Palmengarten
14 – 18 September
Light perfuses the forest, transforming
willow twigs, reflected from the water,
illuminating the park. The exhibition focuses
on landscapes, snapshots of nature in landscapes marked by civilization. Light makes
the world colourful, without it the world is
black.
Bettina Mauel lives and works in Cologne, Germany. Her art studies include internships with Gerhard Richter in Duesseldorf. She has
been regularly exhibiting her work in
Germany, Europe, and abroad since 1983.

Plant Hunters – Plant Painters
The Society of Botanical Artists
At the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the “Society of Botanical Artists”, the society
presents a retrospective of the particular traditional art of botanical painting, having
originated in the 16th century. Plant hunters and collectors were exploring the world in search of new exotic plants, but the means of conserving them for transportation back home were limited. Thus documenting the discoveries required extensive training and fine art skills. Today such journeys are no longer a prerequisite to find exotic plants, many are now cultivated at the
Palmengarten, for instance.
24 November –
Christmas at the Palmengarten
26 December Christmas – a time full of childhood
memories of decorated christmas trees, the
smell of resins, spices, and candied fruit, of
incense and candles. At the Palmengarten‘s
annual Christmas exhibit you emerge in the
special and fascinating flair of the Holiday
Season, a peaceful time of reflection and
celebration.

Botanischer Garten
BOTANICAL GARDEN
The City of Frankfurt acquired the Botanical Garden from the
University of Frankfurt and administratively joined it to the
Palmengarten in 2012. Established through a foundation of
Johann Christian Senckenberg in 1763, it celebrated its 250th
anniversary in 2013. From 1914, the Botanical Garden served
the University for research and teaching with a focus on the
vegetation of Central Europe, East Asia, and North America.
Some 4000 species, many of which endangered, are cultivated on its 18 acres. Several unique biotopes closely resemble
natural settings.
