Permanent shafts are needed to allow air in and out of the underground tunnels, help cool the Tube and enable emergency access to and from the tunnels if necessary. Radcot Street (approved by Lambeth Council) and Harmsworth Street (subject to approval from Southwark Council) are recommended as sites for the temporary shafts. These have been chosen after feedback from residents on their preferences and the outcome of further technical work to assess engineering and building options, traffic impacts and the potential disruption for each of the sites. Consultations were held with residents living close to the proposed shaft locations. At Kennington Green, the preferred location is at the old distillery site, and at the Old Lodge in Kennington Park. In the Claylands Road area, the preference is at the garages on Cottingham Road, but in response to the consultation, TfL is exploring alternative options for this site. We continue to work with Lambeth and Southwark on these proposed locations. Why are we proposing this? Who’s involved The extension of the Northern line is considered essential to support the transformation of Vauxhall and Nine Elms, a designated regeneration area on the South Bank, and is part of wider plans to improve public transport in the area. The scheme is supported by the Mayor of London and was backed by the Government in the Chancellor’s Autumn Statement. Wandsworth, Lambeth and Southwark councils and the key landowners in the area also support the scheme. A series of major redevelopment projects are now under way in Nine Elms and in Vauxhall which will create a new London district with up to 16,000 new homes and business space for 25,000 jobs. Who will pay for the Northern line extension? Additional public transport, particularly the Northern line extension, is needed to make this happen and to benefit existing residents and businesses. We are working with the Government, the Greater London Authority (GLA), the London boroughs of Wandsworth and Lambeth and local landowners to confirm a funding package for the extension. Benefits of the extension include: An independent report on the economic impact of the Northern line extension has shown that the extension would generate substantial benefits. • Two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea, linked to existing bus routes, to improve access to the Tube network When will the extension open? • Journey times from Battersea to the West End or the City will, in some cases, be less than 15 minutes Subject to funding being in place and permission from the Secretary of State for Transport to build and operate the extension, the new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea could be open by 2019. • Less pressure on Vauxhall station and relief to the existing Northern line south of Kennington Sign up now at tfl.gov.uk/nle to keep up-to-date with the latest news on the Northern line extension.
