Almost two thirds of all Prussian and one third of
all German Jews lived in the regions of present-day
Poland which were formerly Prussia’s eastern
provinces. Nevertheless, until now the history of the
Jews in the regions to the east of today’s German
border has remained an area distinctly neglected by
research. The reason for this lay in the extreme difficulty, if not sheer impossibility, of gaining access to
the Polish archives.
Faster and more direct access to the files now for
the very first time:
The current work comprises of two volumes listing
special inventories of archival documents dealing
with the history of the Jews found in the Polish
State archives, and facilitates quick, direct access to
the respective files. In keeping with the central
organization of Polish archives not only the files of
the official state records are covered, but also files
from other sources including municipal archives,
church parishes, educational establishments, businesses, associations, political organizations and cul-
tural facilities. The period covered corresponds to
the time during which the individual areas formed
parts of the Prussian state.
All entries in Polish are provided with German translations. Persons, places, institutions, organizations
and business enterprises are covered by detailed
indexes. For each archive the address, telephone and
fax number, and (where available) e-mail and web
site are included, along with the opening times.

of Prussia east of the River Elbe, their activities in
many fields and their changing view of themselves, is
made much easier and considerably quicker.
The second volume will deal with the holdings of
the archives of the former Prussian province Silesia,
a substantial part of which have been preserved.
Quellen zur Geschichte der Juden in polnischen
Archiven makes numerous little known archival
documents more easily accessible. It constitutes the
continuing implementation of plans to provide new
impetus for research into German-Jewish and
German-Jewish-Polish history, which began with the
publication of the series Quellen zur Geschichte der
Juden in den Archiven der neuen Bundesländer
(Sources on the History of the Jews in the Archives of
the New German Federal States) (edited by Stefi
Jersch-Wenzel and Reinhard Rürup, K. G. Saur
