The motor-sport of the aviation generation
is air racing and the most extreme of that
is jet racing. This is classic NASCAR oval
track racing in the air with all the on course
head to head battles for speed and position. The top racers fly around the track at
50 ft. and over 500 mph with up to 8 G’s
in the turns. Excitement comes with speed,
altitude, traffic, and jet wash encounters..
» Group racing around an 8.4 mile oval track
» Course marked by 10 inner pylon, with penalties for cuts.
» No-fly boundaries along outside edges of
courses.
» 6 laps per race, passing on outside or above
only.
» Line abreast air start with the fastest qualifier
on the pole position.
» No pit stops or contact permitted.
»12 of 19 pilots are former military, and others
haveextensiveformation,aerobatics,andairracing
experience.
» Groups of 6-9 jets compromise a heat. Heats
are categorized by speed; Gold, Silver, &
Bronze.

» 2 pilots are former NASA astronauts, one is a
RBAR World Champion, and another is a second generation lady air race pilot. The remaining
include airline pilots and lawyers.
» Last year’s Gold Race showcased 3 jets clocking laps at over 500 mph. The Czech built L-29
and L-39, with upgraded engines have been

» There are 3 foreign pilots and one female pilot.

» Pilot qualifications: 1000 hrs. PIC, 25 hrs. Turbine
time, Type rating, formation experience, current in
jet racer.
Race Length
50.82 miles
» Must attend Rookie School to be FAA certified as a race pilot. 4 days in June to demonstrate
satisfactory performance in race operations.

....aka, the Reno Air Races are held yearly at Reno-Stead Airport during the second week of September.
The Jet Class Pit area is located at the
east end of the flight line with free admission. Come by to mingle with the pilots, crew, and jets.
