Dear Alumnae,
It is such a pleasure to be a part of the Burke’s community.
From working at Family Festival and attending the young
alumnae cocktail party with Town, to having tea with the
third graders and speaking with eighth graders about the
post-Burke’s transition, I am grateful for the opportunities to
give back to Burke’s, a place that has given me so much.
The most important development at school this year
was the welcoming of Lila Lohr as our 2011-2012
Interim Head of School and the naming of Michele
Williams as our ninth Head of School. Alumnae
played an instrumental role in the Head of School
search process with Louisa Consagra ’78e serving as
co-chair of the Search Committee, alumnae board
members having the opportunity to meet each of
the four finalists, and all alumnae being invited to
an open house to meet Michele Williams after her
appointment in November.

marriages, babies, and grandchildren. There is no
doubt that our alumnae are incredibly accomplished
women, and the common thread is Burke’s.
Please mark your calendar for the 2012 Alumnae
Luncheon, spearheaded by Alumnae Board members
Aimee Carlson ’85 and Lisa Congdon ’89, which will
be held at the Metropolitan Club on Friday, May 11,
2012. This is going to be a fabulous event, and I look
forward to seeing you there. If you have any questions
or would like to be more involved in the Alumnae
Association, please do not hesitate to contact me or
Lauren Becker, our alumnae coordinator.
There are many ways that we as Burke’s alumnae
stay involved and support our school – we attend
events, donate to the annual fund, share our news,
join the Alumnae Board, and remember Burke’s in
our estate plans, just to name a few.
I would like to thank the Alumnae Board for their
continued support of and commitment to Burke’s.
Each member has been instrumental in the success
of our events and meeting our goals.
This KayDeeBee reflects the great response from
alumnae to share their news. It is so wonderful
to learn what our alumnae are doing from being
a nationally ranked high school volleyball player,
working for a Tony-award winning regional theatre

Burke’s Names New Head of School
Michele Williams will join
Burke’s on July 1, 2012 as our
ninth Head of School. A comprehensive national search yielded
not only the best candidate, but
someone who knows our school
well and whose philosophy and
values align perfectly with our
community.
For more than a decade, Michele
has been the Head of the Pebble
Beach Campus of the Stevenson
School, a school she has served for
20 years. To ensure a seamless leadership transition, Burke’s Interim
Head of School, Lila Lohr, and
Michele have weekly phone meetings and meet in-person regularly.
We share with you excerpts from
one of their conversations.
What made you know that Burke’s
is the right fit for you?
At the top of my list is Burke’s
commitment to single-sex
education. As a graduate of
Smith College, I know personally
the power of single sex education.
Your mission to ‘educate, encourage,
and empower girls’ resonated with
me from the beginning, but when
I saw it in action I knew Burke’s
was the place for me.
Equally critical is the school’s
celebration of childhood and
diversity. The students’ sense of joy
is so apparent because children
are allowed to be children here –
to learn, to play, to laugh, and
to explore.
Burke’s girls are clearly encouraged to be who they are and to
engage in the things that interest
and excite them individually.
When you walk the campus you
see, hear and feel that there is no
cookie cutter Burke’s girl.
And finally, I was drawn to
Burke’s because of the wonderful
adults I will be privileged to work
with, including the many alumnae
whom I met during the interview
process and the many more I hope
to meet soon.
How do you successfully blend
tradition with innovation?
It is probably part of the history
teacher in me, but I think you
successfully blend tradition with
innovation by always being mindful of the institution’s history.
Burke’s history is one of innovation as it was established by
women who were ahead of their
time in thinking about the educational needs of young women. It
has since graduated generations of
young women who were encouraged and empowered to take risks
and be confident and have spent
lifetimes doing just that.
What do you see as the challenges
of parenting and how can our
school be more helpful to parents?
As a parent of young children
(Andrew, 7, and Patrick, 4), I
know first-hand how challenging
parenting can be. Our children
are coming of age in an incredibly
fast-paced and changing world

and, as a result, trying to stay
abreast of all the cutting-edge
information regarding your child’s
academic and personal growth can
be overwhelming. I think schools
are most helpful when they work
with parents to help them navigate
this information overload. Burke’s
seems to be doing a fine job of this
through its Speaker Series and
other parent education forums.
Fast forward to next fall, what
will be your goals for the first six
months of your tenure?
First and foremost, my goal will
be to be as accessible as possible to
the school community – students,
faculty, staff, parents and alumnae. I hope that Burke’s will get
to know me well as I get to know
you. A mutual sense of understanding and trust will be critical
as we work together on our goals,
priorities and vision for Burke’s for
the years and decades ahead.
Teacher Milestones
Burke’s honored five teachers
in December for their decades
of outstanding service to our
school – Ms. Gale Mosheim and
Madame Toni Wagner, who have
taught at Burke’s for 35 years, and
Ms. Helen Wiley, Ms. Cynthia
Whitsell and Ms. Pat Tomei,
who have taught at Burke’s for
30 years. Here are excerpts from
the tributes that Interim Head of
School, Lila Lohr, shared about
each teacher:
Gale Mosheim – “She focuses
on the best in each of her girls.
They remember her and know
how much she cared about each of
them. Gale teaches with her heart,
which she clearly brings to Burke’s
each day.”
Toni Wagner – “She’s moved
by and dedicated to seeing the
beauty in life. As one of her many
friends noted, ‘Toni demonstrates
everyday how to appreciate the
fullness of the good life – friends,
fine food, travel and her Danny.’ ”
Helen Wiley – “Helen has been
described, ‘as a music director of
our library, for with the swish of
her baton, or a word of warning or
even a quick glance, she transforms cacophony into harmony.’
Another notes, ‘that Helen is a
helpful colleague, always willing
to lend a book or a hand to make
our lives easier.’ ”

Cynthia Whitsell – “Energetic,
curious and with her own sense
of style and dramatic flair,
Cynthia always has a smile on her
face, laughing and enjoying the
moment. A lifelong learner, she
masters her technological challenges and is eager to share stories
with her co-workers.”
Pat Tomei – “Let me close with
this observation from one of you,
who was once a student of Pat’s:
‘I have such warm memories of
being in Mrs. Tomei’s classes as
a Burke’s girl. It is wonderful to
work with her as a colleague and
to find that all my beliefs about
her as a child are true… she is
genuinely kind, caring, patient
and dedicated to supporting her
students.’ ”
We would like to congratulate
these outstanding women who
have taught hundreds of Burke’s
girls across many decades! When
we posted this amazing achievement on our facebook page,
many alumnae added notes of
congratulations:

Distinguished Alumna Award
The Katherine Delmar Burke School Distinguished Alumna Award is given each
year to an alumna who embodies the values at the heart of the school’s mission to
educate, encourage, and empower girls. The recipient exemplifies a life of learning,
service to community, individuality, and the ability to make a difference.
Burke’s was pleased to award
Rachel Skiffer ’88 the 2011
Distinguished Alumna Award.
Rachel Skiffer ’88
“Rachel exemplifies the
qualities that Burke’s works
to instill in its students –
hard working, kind and
confident.”
Rachel is a multi-faceted educational administrator with a
background in law, education,
and public policy. She is currently
the Director of Admission and
Financial Aid at University High
School in San Francisco. In selecting Rachel, one alumna noted,
“Rachel exemplifies the qualities
that Burke’s works to instill in its
students – hard-working, kind and
confident. She is a role model not
only to those at Burke’s today, but
also an inspiration to her peers.
Her courage to always follow her
heart – and her love and generosity which she selflessly shares with
others – truly make her worthy of
this award.”
Rachel carved a path of leadership,
community service, academic
excellence and public policy early
in life. At age seven, she joined
Children as the Peacemakers, a
club committed to world peace.

As part of a Children as the
Peacemakers mission, Rachel had
the opportunity to meet with 26
world leaders including Chinese
Premier Zhao, Indira Gandhi,
Mikhail Gorbachev, and Pope
John Paul II.
After Burke’s, Rachel attended
Lowell High School, graduated
from Harvard University (magna
cum laude) and Harvard Law
School. At Harvard, she was
involved with the Harvard Law
School Drama Society and the
Harvard Law Review. Following
a successful career in real estate
law, Rachel shifted her career
to education. Before coming to
University High School, Rachel
was instrumental in developing a
sustainable financial aid system for
The Latin School of Chicago and
drafted the school’s first financial
aid policy.

1950s
1920s
Six of the members of the class
of 1950 met at the home of Mary
Jones Kelley in San Francisco
in October – Louise DeMartini
Dixie Monkhouse ’28 shares that
she is “still vertical at 102!” Dixie
lives in a residential community
in Marin County where six other
Burke’s alumnae reside.
1930s
Jane Starkweather Spencer ’31
turned 100 years old in January.
She has six grandchildren and
nine great grandchildren, all of
them live close by, and as Jane says,
“provide a great comfort to me.”
1940s
Jess Porter Cooley ’45 attended
Burke’s from kindergarten
through high school and “could
never have managed Stanford
without the preparation given
at Burke’s.” Jess catches up with
fellow classmates Judy Swigert
Bonelli, Gerry Kennedy Cole and
Leslie McLaren Hill.
Barbara Fenger Cummings ’49 has
five grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Barbara plays the
cello and still works as a substitute
teacher in Special Education.
Vejar, Sandy Rietz Jones, Carolyn
Durbrow Baum, Mary Franck and
Wanda Herrington Walker. Wanda
shares, “Here’s to many more years
reminiscing. 61 years!”
Karen Carr Doherty ’52 tells us
that her youngest son and his wife
started a free secondary school for
underprivileged girls in Kenya in
2009, which today has girls from
27 of the 52 tribes represented.
Jeanie Doolittle Henry ’52 notes,
“We still live on a farm in rural
southeast Pennsylvania. Our four
children are grown and reside in
Ann Arbor, London, Santa Fe and
Baltimore. I am retired and do
volunteer environmental work.
We go to Sausalito for two months
every year where we walk, and see
old friends from Burke’s and U.C.”
Carole Jefferson Ehrhardt ’52
and her husband Frank are now
taking a back seat at Douglas
Ranch Camps as their son Steve
takes the helm. 2012 will be the
camp’s 88th season. Classmate
Jean Doolittle Henry and her
husband visited the Ehrhardts in
Pebble Beach during their annual
visit west.
Marilyn Walz ’53 lives in Oregon,
spending time at homes in both
Lake Oswego and Bend.

Gloria Henderson ’59 and her husband Hal
Grace Richard ’53 writes, “My
husband R.B. and I have enjoyed
retirement and sailed most of the
seven seas with Crystal Cruises.
I enjoy duplicate bridge, have
attained the rank of Silver Life
Master and hope to make Gold
Life master in the next few
years. Our five children live in
California, Oregon, Colorado and
Virginia so we do cross country
visits to them as often as possible.
I still keep in contact with some
of my classmates – in particular
Pat Campbell Callender. Anyone
coming to Las Vegas for a visit –
I’m a good guide to the city and
county. Give me a call!”
While traveling through Saigon,
Vietnam, Eleanor Burke ’56
and husband Bernie spent
Christmas with their son, Fred,
daughter-in-law Loan and their
grandchildren, Mai Ly (9) and
Cody (6). Joining them was Leslie
Burke Dicke ’78e and her family,
Charlie, Molly ’10 (sophomore
at Lick-Wilmerding) and George
(seventh grader at Cathedral
School). Eleanor adds, “This year
I published the book Sketching
San Francisco’s Neighborhoods and

a booklet: Saigon (a guide with
maps on where to go, what to do).
Doing these books and getting
them printed and distributed
has been exciting to say the least,
and I appreciate all the support
I’ve enjoyed from the Burke’s
community.”
Dr. Susan Seeley ’56 notes that she
still works at the University of San
Francisco, School of Education
and teaches French part time at St.
Joseph Notre Dame High School
in Alameda. Susan adds, “We
travel often – our next trip is to
Basque country – and have seven
grandchildren!”
Nancy Boldrey Cooper ’56 filled us
in on her move to the Southwest.
“After seven months of turmoil,
I have finally arrived in Austin,
Texas, at my new home. I join
my two children, Madison and
Kimberley, and their families
and my four grandchildren. I
couldn’t be happier. One sadness
was not being able to say adieu
to my classmates at their annual
lunch at Perry’s, but I hope to join
them perhaps next Spring. Look
forward to seeing all who come
to Austin.”
Marjorie R. Gordon ’59 heads
her own firm, Snap Décor. She
is also a world traveler, visiting
such places as Bhuton, Thailand,
Burma, Laos, Brittany, Vienna,
Amsterdam and Paris.

Annie Hereford Rohrbach ’57
recently published her first book,
Conscious Order: Clear Your
Mind, Leave Clutter Behind.

25 years of working with clients

“My sweetheart Gary Walker
and I live in The Villages Golf &
Country Club in the foothills of
San Jose. Between us we have four
children and nine grandchildren,
who bring us much joy. Life is
good!”
Kathleen Rende ’59 is enjoying 17
years as Manager of Gumps’ Gift
Registry. She has three wonderful
children, a beautiful daughter-inlaw and two grandchildren – one
who is currently a kindergartner
at Burke’s.
We send a special thank you to
Louise Harris ’59 who gathered
notes and pictures for the class
of 1959. Louise sent us her
holiday card of her grandson,
Bo, who lives in Jordan Park
with her daughter Gingy Harris
Gable ’79 and husband. Bo is in
kindergarten at Mt. Tam in Mill
Valley. Louise adds that she loves,
“Having fun with my six-year old
grandson!”

Theatre.
Florence Pierce Manning ’59 went
to her North Hillsborough grade
school reunion in October and
saw her Burke’s classmate, Susan
Otto Comartin.

CLASS NOTES
1960s
Susan Fesus ’60 welcomed her
first granddaughter Ellery June
Zanto in April 2010. “I love being
a grandmother. George and I still
live in Aspen during the winter
and summer and San Francisco
during the spring and the fall.”
Mina Barrett Lunt ’60 loved
her 50th reunion. Since then,
however, she told us she “fell and
knocked out my two front teeth,
but implants are great! Following
that, I got my nose pierced and a
butterfly tattoo. Jim and I both
retired this year. Life is good and
I have the connection with my
Burke’s friends – we all seem to
pick up where we left off, even at
fifty years.”
After retiring from medicine
in 2005, Anne Hunter ’60 was
ordained as an Episcopal deacon
in 2006 and is now a hospice
chaplain. Anne Shares, “All that
activity is a bit slowed down at the
moment because I’m being treated
for cancer. I’m doing very well
though.” We send Anne all our
best wishes.
Katharine Ashley Cobb ’64 retired
from the Gibson School, where
she had taught for forty years,
but is still substituting and doing
volunteer work at the Gibson
House Museum.
Pam Kleps Rhodes ’64 lives
Linda Liebelt ’65 retired in 2009
but says, “I have been busier than
I ever was when I was getting
paid to work. I volunteer for the
San Francisco Food Bank and for
the Friends of the San Francisco
Library. My husband, Wolfgang,
and I co-founded an environmental project to restore a mile long
greenbelt in San Francisco. We
have travelled to Peru, Galapagos
Islands, Africa, Israel, and Jordan,
and have trekked in Patagonia.
I loved spending a few days last
spring in the Big Apple with my
Community Foundation on
addressing issues from education
to regional planning and foster
care. Her husband, Mark, spends
most of his time writing plays for
his men’s club. Their daughter,
Megan, is engaged to be married
to Sam Neher at the family ranch
in Mendocino County in August.”
Margot adds, “My spare time is
spent on our ranch or birding,
reading or traveling. Our small
zinfandel vineyard produced a
pretty healthy crop of grapes that
await bottling this summer.”

working at the Silicon Valley
in Davis, CA and sings in the

groups. Katharine Ashley Cobb
has seen her perform and notes,

mini-reunion took place in
New York in spring 2011. Cathy
Blumlein Strauss, Linda George
Liebelt, Sherry Saxe Loehr, Yvette

Upham Barnes and I stayed at
The Blakely for a grown-up
version of a slumber party. We saw
two wonderful musicals, dined
at fabulous restaurants, visited
museums and shopped, of course.
CLASS NOTES
Joan also let us know that
classmate Sherry Saxe Loehr is a
prominent artist. “My husband,
Walt, and I had the opportunity
to visit Sherry’s studio at her
lovely home in Ojai in 2010.
I had seen her vibrant acrylic
paintings on her website and in
art publications but never in
person. The colors and textures
are truly amazing. I think you
would all enjoy looking at Sherry’s
website at www.sherryloehr.com.”
Andrea Solari ’66 notes that she
along with other members of
the class of 1966 have become
grandmothers for the first time
this year: MJ Dunphy, Diana
Morris Wild and Kathy AtlassRedfield. Andrea is the Director
of Finance at Salesian High
School while her husband, Jim
Klaczak, is the Athletic Director
and Head Football Coach at De
Anza. Andrea and Jim have been
spending as much time as possible
in Italy, although now with a new
grandchild, they are very much
enjoying living in Napa.

Amy Tremper ’66 with husband Steve in
New Mexico
Kathy Atlass-Redfield ’66 works
and travels on behalf of Theraplay,
an internationally recognized
treatment for children and families based on insights from attachment theory and recent research in
neuroaffective development. She
returns to the Bay Area often to be
with classmates, spend time with
her son and first grandson and
to follow her daughter’s career in
theatre (she interned with the
S.F. Mime Troupe last summer).

keeps me grounded in reality. I am

years, and still push myself beyond

Lisa Colgate ’77 shares, “I’ve just
moved back to New York City
after living in the suburbs for the
past fifteen years. I have three
children; Alexander, a sophomore
in high school, Oliver, a freshman,
and Georgina, a sixth grader at
Nightingale-Bamford School
in New York City. I started at
Burke’s in the sixth grade and she
started Nightingale in the sixth
grade as well. The schools have
the same feel and when I drop
her off, I often think of Burke’s. I
recently left my position as editor
