Advantages of J-KEM Robotics
Custom Design
While others start from an existing
design, then try to make your application
fit their instrument, every J-KEM
workstation is designed from scratch
to implement your automation task
efficiently and with an eye towards future
expandability. J-KEM’s experience in
lab automation, including temperature
control, reactor design, fluid delivery,
solid and solution phase synthesis is
invaluable when optimizing the design of
custom robotics.
Polymer Compounding Robot
Modules: 4-Temperaure zone reaction block,
balance, bar code reader, heated & cooled reagent block, cooled 4-position sonicator, precision
syringe pump with 16 reagent ports, 6-zone temperature controller, and needle wash station.
Custom Software
You Own the Solution
J-KEM believes that you should not only own the instrument, but you
should own the technology that created the instrument. That’s why
we are the only company that releases the original source code with
every robot. This gives you the power to change every aspect of the
robot’s operation as your automation needs change.
Custom software is written for every workstation to provide an
intuitive user interface. The procedure’s setup, the way data is read
into and out of the program, and the exact sequence of program steps
are all customized to make the operation of your robot both efficient
and user friendly.
Personal Service
J-KEM is committed to personal service, offering any support that’s
needed to assure the successful integration and productivity of our
automation solutions. With one phone call, you can talk to the
engineer who designed your robot, the engineer who installed it, and
the software engineer who wrote the program.
Value
J-KEM’s custom robotics are often half the price of other companies’
“one-size-fits-all” alternative. While many of the modules on a
workstation are standard J-KEM products, we also use the best
available instruments like balances, bar code readers, and pumps to
assemble the final workstation in the most affordable and efficient
manner.
It’s not really enough to own the code if it’s not easy to use.
Written in VB.Net, the robotic
software contains intuitive,
high level functions that make
understanding or modifying
your code easy. Consider the
example to the right that weighs
every vial in a 96 vial rack.

Why is it important to own the original source code?
Without the source code, you’re stuck with the robot you have
rather than the robot you need as your automation needs change.
For example, suppose the robot’s original task was weighing and
dissolving samples to specific concentrations, but now you need it to
add reagents to 4 mL septum vials in a temperature controlled reactor
with mixing. In most cases you’d need to purchase a new robot.
Even for small changes, if you don’t own the original source code,
then you’re 100% dependent on the company who does. J-KEM
offers ongoing software support for all of our customers. But still,
to own the tools that place you in control of your own workstation is
invaluable.

Solid Phase Extraction Station
The KEE-100 automates 24-positions of solid
phase extraction. The KEE-100 works by
regulating the solvent flow rate and optically
monitoring the position of the solvent front
above the top of the column packing in each
column individually. When the solvent front
reaches the top of the packing, a Teflon valve
closes preventing the packing from going
dry. Individual control of solvent flow rate
and position ensure reproducible results. SPE
columns can be developed either by vacuum or
positive pressure.

Capping & Uncapping Station
J-KEM’s capping module automates the removal and replacement of caps from sample vials.
The capper removes, then replaces one cap at a time eliminating the possibility of cross
contamination. The top and bottom grippers automatically adjust to caps with diameters from
8 mm to 26 mm (2 mL to 20 mL vials) with no tooling changes, and can be adjusted for cap
diameters up to 35 mm and vial heights of 125 mm.
Thread pitch, the number of turns needed to remove
a cap, and recapping torque are all software
programmable. Available with RS232 or USB.

The Endeavour’s affordable price makes it a perfect “intelligent fraction collector.” The Endeavour
can be programmed to collect fractions based on any input parameter and according to any pattern.
For example: 1) Place the first 40% and the last 40% of any peak in one common test tube,
but put the middle 20% in a GC vial for analysis.
2) Collect each peak to a single tube. After the fractionation process is done, go
back and transfer 1mL of each collected peak to a GC vial for analysis.
This is great stuff, but what I really need is. . . . . . .
J-KEM welcomes the opportunity to work with you on any automation project. Put our

software
The SYR-1200 syringe pump automates the addition of reagents at user entered rates. A programmable
distribution valve allows the system to dispense to and withdraw from up to 8 reagent bottles or reactors in any
sequence. In addition to the standard programs pre-loaded in the controller (see below), J-KEM offers custom
programming at no additional charge to automate virtually any fluid delivery task. Additionally, KEM-Commander
PC software allows the user to build sophisticated delivery programs with an intuitive drag-n-drop interface.

Standard Syringe Pump Programs
Standard programs are permanent and pre-loaded in the syringe pump controller
Program 1. Timed Addition Sequentially adds up to 16 reagents
to a single or multiple reactors at user specified rates. The syringe
automatically primes and refills with the active reagent as needed.
Example (pump fitted with a 5 mL syringe):
1) Add 12mL of reagent A at a rate of 3 mL/min
2) Add 2.5mL of reagent B at a rate of 0.025 mL/min
3) Delay 1 hour
4) Add 10mL of reagent C at a rate of 60 mL/min
Program 2. Program Loader Use KEM-Commander PC software
(included) to construct a custom syringe pump program in a drag-ndrop visual environment. Program Loader then uploads that program
to nonvolatile memory in the syringe pump controller. Once stored in

NEW
Model SYR-1400 Syringe Pump
The SYR-1400 is the most versatile syringe pump available.
The SYR-1400 is operated from a PC running J-KEM’s KEM-Pump
software. KEM-Pump implements all the programs of the SYR-1200
plus additional programs for serial and multi-reactor reagent additions.
Unlike any other syringe pump, KEM-Pump is an open source code
application that allows researchers with programming experience
to create their own applications without limitations (see blue insert
below).
Demo software at: www.jkem.com\syringepumps
Ordering information for the SYR-1400
and accessories is on page 13.
The SYR-1400 system includes both the syringe pump and KEM-Pump software. KEM-Pump is open source, graphical software that
includes both pre-written applications and the original source code, in VB.Net, to allow users to create their own custom applications.
KEM-Pump is a bold advance in laboratory automation that provides the user unprecedented control over how the syringe pump operates.
KEM-Pump handles the low level tasks, like serial communications, then exposes high level functions for virtually any syringe pump
action, greatly simplifying the effort needed to write new applications. For example,
the code block below fully implements dispensing any volume of reagent at
a user specified rate; syringe refills are handled automatically. The list of
functions and a complete programmer’s manual is available at jkem.com.
Public Sub StartTimedAddition(ByVal Exp as RunData, Byval PumpAddress as Int32)

Comparing the Features of the SYR-1200 and the
SYR-1400 Syringe Pump Systems
J-KEM’s two syringe pump systems, the SYR-1200 (page 10) and the SYR-1400 (page 11) share many of the same features, but differ in
several important ways that may make one system better suited for your application. The key differences between the SYR-1200 and the
SYR-1400 are 1) the SYR-1200 has its own syringe pump controller allowing it to be used as a stand-alone instrument while the
SYR-1400 requires a PC for operation, and 2) the SYR-1400 is substantially more versatile, taking advantage of the power of a PC.
The SYR-1200
Both the SYR-1200 and
the SYR-1400 use the same
pump module. This means
that both systems provide
identical performance in
regards to flow rate range
and accuracy. It also
means that both system
use the same syringes,
distribution valves and
other accessories.
Controller
Controller
The SYR-1400 is operated from your PC.
Programs are stored and recalled, and the
experiment’s progress is displayed on the PC.
The SYR-1200 is operated from its own
computer controller which means that a PC
is not required for operation. The controller
stores and recalls the various programs and has
a keypad for user input and a screen to display
the experiment’s progress.
Standard Programs
The SYR-1400 comes with KEM-Pump
graphical control software that runs the syringe
pump module. KEM-Pump implements all of
the standard programs of the SYR-1200 plus
several others.
Standard Programs
The syringe pump controller has the most
common and useful pump applications loaded
into permanent memory (see page 10).
Custom Programs
J-KEM offers to write one custom program and
load it into permanent memory at no additional
charge.
Creating New Programs
The SYR-1200 comes with a free PC
application called KEM-Commander. With
KEM-Commander, sophisticated scriptstyle programs can be built in a drag-n-drop
environment that can then be run from the PC.
KEM-Commander programs can be thousands
of commands long. Examples of program
script commands are shown below.

Custom Programs
J-KEM offers to write one custom program
and add it to your copy of KEM-Pump at no
additional charge.
Creating New Programs
With the SYR-1400, new programs are created
by adding your code to J-KEM’s open source
syringe pump application, KEM-Pump, written
in Microsoft’s VB.Net. For researchers with
programming experience, the versatility of the
syringe pump system is limited only by your
imagination. KEM-Pump contains high level
functions that provide intuitive access to every
syringe pump feature. Using these functions,
virtually any syringe pump program can be
created in a matter of hours. For researchers
without programming experience, one of the
screens in KEM-Pump builds new syringe
pump programs by dragging commands to a
script-style command list. KEM-Pump also
has an intuitive graphical interface that displays
the status of a running experiment in real-time.

Something
unusual
from a scientific
instrument company
From the beginning, J-KEM has worked to be part of the research community, rather than
just a supplier to the research community. That’s why J-KEM offers substantial Academic
discounts on every item we sell, because we believe that supporting the next generation
of researcher is part of our corporate responsibility. J-KEM’s Continuous Flow Reactor
continues that commitment by supplying the high quality instruments that are needed for
research today. At the time this catalog was printed, our continuous flow reactor was still in
development, but even in development, its performance and features so significantly exceeded
those of any other flow reactor that we decided to provide a preview of what’s coming.
Continuous Flow Reactor
J-KEM’s continuous flow reactor can be configured to operate in either of two modes, reaction discovery mode or preparative synthesis
mode. In discovery mode, a homogeneous mixture of reaction materials are loaded into a sample injection loop which are then injected into
the flow reactor. The reactants flow through the reactor being pushed forward by a continuous stream of clean solvent. While the reactants
from the first injection are in the reactor, the reactants for a second injection are being measured out and mixed by a robotic workstation that
both prepares reactants for injection and acts as a fraction collector for the reaction products as they elute. Up to 128 reactions can be fully
automated without requiring operator intervention. In discovery mode, 50 - 100 mg of products
are typically produced in each experiment.
Fully automated operation runs up to 128 unattended reactions
• Prepares reactant mixtures and loads the sample loop
• Controls timing of reactant injections and product collection
• Program control of flow rate and reactor temperature
J-KEM’s continuous flow reactor can also be configured to run in preparative
mode to produce gram quantities of reactants. In prep mode, the reactants
are continuously pumped into the reactor in the desired ratios by adjusting the
flow rate of the two reactant pumps. This method was used to run the reaction
shown at the left, which resulted in the preparation of 1.94 g of the aryl amine
during a 3.5 hour run.
Reactor Features
• Multiple reactor options:
- Stainless steel, Inconel, PEEK, PTFE
- Tube OD’s of 1/16” and 1/8”
- Tube ID’s from 0.02” to 0.14”
- Reactor volumes from 1 mL to 20 mL
• Flow rates from 0.01 to 5.0 mL/min
• High pressure (4000 psi) pump
• Temperature range from RT to 300o C
• Back pressure regulators from 100 to
1000 psi

Multi-Temperature Zone Reaction Blocks
Multi-zone reaction blocks allow independent temperature control
of each block position. Each block can be a different style (heated,
cooled, reflux) and can fit different size vials. Multi-zone reaction
blocks are an indispensable tool for parallel synthesis, process
development, and formulations research.

Fully Automated SPS Reactor
Solvent is held in the reactor by computer controlled nitrogen back pressure.
Single key stroke commands provide the functionality to:
·
·
·
·
Set up a new reaction
Mix the reactants and resin
Filter & wash the resin
Cleave and collect final products
The SPS reactor works by pressurizing the reactor base with nitrogen gas until it exactly offsets the pull of gravity.
In this way, solvent can be added to a single reactor with none of it dropping through the frit. As reactors are
sequentially filled, the SPS computer regulator precisely controls the flow of nitrogen to maintain the reactor’s back
pressure to +-0.001 psi. Using nitrogen back pressure to hold solvent in the reaction tube eliminates the need for
mechanical valves or other mechanical devices which prevents automation of the SPS process. Reactions are
mixed by placing the reactor on a bench top shaker, or by increasing the pressure in the base to cause continuous
or intermittent bubbling up through the frit mixing the resin and reactants. Reaction setup, mixing, washing, and
filtration are accomplished by a single key stroke on the computer pressure regulator. Can be combined with
J-KEM’s Eclipse robot for fully automated, multi-step SPS reactions.

Solvent Evaporation
The KEM-Vap Solvent Evaporator uses heated
nitrogen gas and variable vacuum pressures to rapidly
evaporate volatile and nonvolatile solvents in the
same evaporator. The evaporator cover directs a jet of nitrogen gas
into each cell of a titer plate or vial in a vial rack for uniform and
consistent evaporations. For nonvolatile solvents, a combination of
vacuum and heated nitrogen removes solvents in a fraction of the
time needed when vacuum or heated gas is used alone. Made from
stainless steel and ultra high density polypropylene the evaporator
is not harmed by organic or aqueous solvents. Custom evaporators
made on request.

Water Flow Monitor
Precisely monitors the flow rate of water through a condenser, water bath, or other piece of
equipment. If the flow rate falls below the minimum rate set by the user (i.e. loss of
pressure, broken hose), power is turned off to the monitor’s output receptacle and any equipment plugged into it. Power remains off until
being manually reset. The optional water shut off valve stops water flow during an alarm condition preventing a flooded lab. With safety as
its primary goal, the J-KEM Water Flow Monitor measures the actual water flow rate,
rather than back pressure as in commonly measured by lower quality instruments.

Nitrogen Gas Heater
J-KEM’s Nitrogen Gas Heater regulates the temperature of nonflammable gases providing
an intrinsically safe heat source for safety critical laboratory applications. An ideal
instrument for solvent evaporation or for any heating application where a traditional heater
is unsafe or inconvenient to use. Includes a digital temperature controller for
0.5o C regulation of outlet gas temperature. A minimum flow rate of 1 liter/minute must
be maintained when power is applied to the heater. To avoid burning out the heater
element, an optional flow switch can be built into the heater to turn power off when gas
flow falls below the minimum safe level.

The Digital Vacuum Regulator is an ideal instrument for laboratory
vacuum regulation. Connect the regulator to any vacuum pump or
vacuum source and then to any piece of equipment to regulate pressure
in most cases to ± 1 torr. A pressure ramp feature (standard) evacuates
equipment at a user defined rate to eliminate bumping due to solvent degassing or over-evacuation. The vacuum regulator is ideally suited
for large volume distillations, rotary evaporators and vacuum chambers. The DVR-200 is not recommended for small volume distillations or
applications which involve a continuous purge with gas. These are better
performed by J-KEM’s Precision Vacuum Regulator, the DVR-1000.

A Note About Quality
The DVR-200 is designed for continuous vacuum sources, such as
oil-filled vacuum pumps, aspirators, or systems that are “always
on”, like in-house vacuum systems. The DVR-200 regulates
pressure by opening and closing a valve that separates the vacuum
source from the system being evacuated. In most cases, the
DVR-200 is the best choice.
DVR-280
The DVR-280 is designed for use with diaphragm vacuum
pumps. In some systems, pressure is regulated by turning on and
off the vacuum pump itself. The DVR-280 extends the life of
diaphragm pumps by not exposing the diaphragm to full vacuum
pressures when starting, which increases pump life by 100%.
J-KEM uses the highest quality components available. For example, most vacuum
controllers use a silicone filled vacuum transducer (because they cost less), but J-KEM
uses a stainless steel diaphragm transducer. Also, rather than a standard vacuum valve
with Viton seals, J-KEM uses a custom stainless steel valve with Teflon seals. These,
and other enhancements provide the chemical resistance needed in chemistry laboratories.

New in 2009
At the heart of J-KEM’s 200-Series
controllers is a new, high
speed microprocessor that
performs 3 functions:
1. Power Regulation
J-KEM’s original
power control computer is replaced by a next generation
microprocessor. The power control computer is J-KEM’s
patented technology that adjusts power to the heater 2048
times per second resulting in 0.1o C regulation.
2. USB Communications
PC communications and free
KEM-Net software enables remote PC control, GLP/GMP compliant data
collection, and multi-temperature ramps built in an Excel-like table.
3. Upgradable Programming
Software modules can be uploaded to the
processor, at no charge, adding new capabilities
to the controller. For example, automatic
detection of exothermic reactions. You
may not see the exotherm in this plot (and
it was a big one), but the microprocessor
does. You can’t see it because as it occurred,
the temperature controller stopped powering
the heater to compensate for the heat being
generated by the reaction.

High Safety Controllers
Model 270
Designed for processes requiring uncompromised safety. The only temperature controller available with a
built-in, independent, backup controller to guard against heating accidents from equipment failure. The desired
temperature is entered into the main temperature controller which regulates heating, and then a high temperature cut-off is entered into the
backup limit controller. If the reaction reaches the high temperature limit or a thermocouple breaks, power is turned off to the heater until the
controller is manually reset. Both meters independently monitor the reaction temperature. In the event that one meter fails, the other takes
over to prevent a heating accident. J-KEM’s design provides independent, 100% redundant control.

The J-KEM Advantage
Research grade temperature (200-Series) and vacuum regulators contain
two next-generation FLASH programmable microprocessors.
Processor 1
The Power Control Computer
The patented power control
computer is the heart of every
J-KEM temperature controller. The
computer adjusts power to the heater
2048 times per second resulting in
0.1o C regulation of any reaction and
virtually eliminates overshoot of the entered setpoint on initial warming.
Processor 2
USB Communications
The communications
processor, new in
2009, implements PC
control, data logging, and our new web based FLASH Modules. FLASH
Modules are programs that can be downloaded from J-KEM’s web site to
your controller at no charge. An example of a FLASH module is the Exo/
Endo module that automatically quantifies, then alerts the user when an
exothermic reaction is detected.
KEM-Net software is included with all USB enabled controllers.
Features:

GMP requirements
E-mail alerts of over- & under-temperature alarms
PC Control, serial communications, networking, and data logging explained.....
J-KEM supports three serial communications standards: USB, RS-232, and RS-485. Each has advantages and limitations.
J-KEM USB This is the standard port on 200-Series
temperature controllers and the Digital Vacuum Regulator.
The advantage of USB is that it’s present on all PCs and
supports connecting multiple controllers to a single PC. The
only limitation of USB is that cable lengths cannot be longer
than 15 feet without using a USB extender (offered below).
Controllers connect to the
PC’s USB ports or a USB hub.
RS-232 A hardware RS-232 port is available, but usually not needed.
J-KEM’s USB port includes a virtual RS-232 port driver that operates with software utilizing RS-232 communications.
RS-485 has the unique advantage that cable lengths between
the instrument and PC can be as long as 4000 feet. For lab
arrangements that require long cable runs, RS-485 is a valuable
alternative. Contact J-KEM for ordering assistance. J-KEM’s
KEM-Comm software is required for RS-485 communications.

Thin Wire Thermocouples
Flexible yet rugged thermocouples measure difficult to reach spots such as inside
heating mantles, ovens, or around curved surfaces. Also useful to measure volumes
as small as 100 µL. Thin wire thermocouples adhere to equipment to measure surface
temperatures of hot plates, HPLC columns, photolysis or other reactors.

Needle Tip Thermocouples
Hypodermic needle thermocouples (17 gauge) are ideal to measure and control the temperature of small volumes and
inert reactions. Temperature measuring end of the thermocouple is at the tip, so only the first 2 mm of the probe must
have liquid contact for accurate temperature measurement. Forms an air tight seal when inserted through a septum.

Instatherm® Oil Baths
* Accommodates a variety of vessel sizes
and shapes
The intelligent design of the Instatherm oil bath, from Ace Glass, includes features
that make it the safest and most reliable oil bath for laboratory use. The metal alloy
* Suitable for magnetic stirrers
heating element is fused directly to the surface of the glass bath and then covered with
a tough silicone rubber layer and a glass insulation layer which serves as both
a thermal barrier and protects against physical shock. The bottom of the
Instatherm is not heated so the bath can
be placed on magnetic stirrers. The
Instatherm bath can be operated up to
250o C. Includes power cord.

For maximum versatility, J-KEM recommends the INS-150 and INS-190 oil baths. These
baths can be used with any 200-Series temperature controller, which can also be used with
any heating mantle (above). Thus, the same controller can be used with either heating
mantles or oil baths.

The Road
We’re
On
(together)
1988
Incorporated as J-KEM Electronics.
Offering one product, the Model 260
temperature controller, we finish our
first year with sales of $784.00.
1989
Flush with cash from its first year
sales, J-KEM doubles its product line
and begins offering the Model 210.
Attended the Fall ACS meeting,
exhibiting all four of the controllers
we owned, then spent sleepless
nights worrying how we’d fill orders
if they came in.
J-KEM Scientific’s employees gathered around the fire pole of our first facility, the fire house.
1990
J-KEM’s first major customer was Dr. James
Zeller of Parke Davis. J-KEM expands its
manufacturing area 400% by moving from
just the corner to occupy the entire basement
(sorry girls about your play house).
1992
First international sale. Model 210 to Italy.
1993
Moved to our first commercial building.
Hired our first full time employee (Li, above).
Built the first power control computer
(8 bits, 4 MHz!!).
1994 - Incorporated as J-KEM Scientific
1995 - Purchased our first building,
J-KEM appreciates the relationship we’ve had with all of our
customers. It’s more than just the obvious fact that without you, J-KEM
would not be in business. We appreciate the friendships and the
ideas we’ve received from world class scientists, that without, many
of our best products wouldn’t exist. Don Korte gave us the idea for
the miniature overhead stirrer, Martyn Fordham, the Personal Reaction
Station, Dr. Bruce Hamper the Solid Phase Synthesis Regulator, and the
unknown chemist from Abbott who came to our booth at the ACS show
to say “I don’t need a temperature controller, I need a vacuum regulator
that works”. This resulted in our Digital Vacuum Regulator.
20 Years of Innovation
a 1930’s fire house.
1998 - First years sales >$1,000,000.
1999 - First robot sold to Dr. Glass
40 MHz microprocessor enables
* Exo & Endotherm analysis
* USB communications
* Enhanced safety
of Zenica.
2000+ - Emphasis in lab automation,
parallel reactors, and robotics.
Pictured are the original
(left) and new (right) Model
210-Timer circuit boards
2008 - Staying abreast with advances in
technology:
• Third generation power control
computer
• Second generation Syringe Pumps
• Two new robotic designs
• Custom lab automation
instruments and software
The first temperature controller
made by J-KEM, sold to Dr.
Kurt Moedritzer of Monsanto
(Dr. Moedritzer also purchased
controller #2. Our first loyal
customer!!)
In 2008, J-KEM completed the redesign and
implementation of the 3rd generation of its
power control computer. The new design
uses a FLASH programmable microprocessor
that can be updated with new controller
features from J-KEM’s web site.
