The opening festivities: also an artistic
dramatisation
Around 600 performers under the Artistic Direction of Volker Hesse also from part of the Gottardo
2016 opening festivities of June 1, 2016. The dramatisation takes place at both ends of the Gotthard
Base Tunnel. It spotlights the Gotthard legend as passed down through the centuries, and the new,
with the high-tech record tunnel, which brings the north and the south closer together.
In view of the context of an international event with several sites in the open air as well as indoors,
Volker Hesse does not use spoken language but powerful images, bodily processes, music and dance
theatre, and generally physical forms of expression.
Worldwide international professionals meet regional amateur performers
Participating in the dramatisation are international ground and aerial artists, various professional
musicians, alphorn players and the Swiss Army Band, as well as movement groups, choirs and
musical ensembles from the Gotthard region. Professionals from Switzerland, Chile, Spain, France
and Germany work together with amateurs from the population of the region. For the Gotthard
Opening project there is also close collaboration with the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Verscio (Ticino).
Volker Hesse is a German director who has for many years regularly dramatised in Switzerland and is
already connected with the Gotthard region. For example, Hesse already directed the Tell Spiele in
Altdorf (2008 and 2012) as well as the traditional World Theatre in Einsiedeln (2000 and 2007).
Central career milestones were his artistic directorship at the Theater am Neumarkt in Zurich and his
management of the Maxim Gorki Theater in Berlin. Volker Hesse has repeatedly dramatised in various
Swiss cities as well as in Germany, for example Cologne, Düsseldorf and Munich.
The project is actively assisted by the Accademia Teatro Dimitri in Verscio as well as the University of
Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI).
