`Michael Sailstorfer: Head and Body`, Museum Kurhaus Kleve
Exhibition ‘Michael Sailstorfer: Head and Body’, Museum Kurhaus Kleve (28.09.2014 – 25.01.2015) The sculptor and installation artist, Michael Sailstorfer (1979-), who lives in Berlin, is regarded as one of the most important impulse-givers of his generation, working for more than a decade on a nationally and internationally noted extension of the concept of sculpture. His work to date has been followed in North Rhine Westphalia with great interest [„Clouds“ in the Kunstsammlung NRW in Düsseldorf (K20), „Hoher Besuch“ (VIP Visit) in the Sculpture Park, „Schwarzwald“ in the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Düren, „Pulheim gräbt“ (Pulheim digs), among others]. A special characteristic of his work consists in intermeshing everyday things and materials with a new, often metaphysically ironic meaning. With this strategy of perceptible switching between planes of reality he conceives himself, on the one hand, in the line of succession from Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Beuys, distancing himself, on the other, from their missionary consciousness through a programmatic pragmatism. Although Michael Sailstorfer can already point to an impressive series of solo and group exhibitions in renowned institutions, as yet there has been no large comprehensive exhibition of his work in a museum. The Museum Kurhaus Kleve wants to remedy this desideratum by making its entire lower floor available to the artist, developing together with him a stringent course through the labyrinth of his sculptural problematics to date. Of particular interest is the interpenetration of inside / outside and nature / sculpture which is suggested both by the house's singular architecture and the specificity of the works. On the occasion of the exhibition at the Museum Kurhaus Kleve a new piece titled Kopf und Körper (Mind and Body) (2014) was realized. It is based on the renderings of a face that is reminiscent of Konrad Lorenz’ baby schema: a set of facial and body features such as oversized head with big round eyes, little nose and chin which function as cues for care. Sailstorfer defamiliarizes these stimuli with various means such as the use of heavy, cast-iron elements transforming them from something cute into something uncanny.
