thule 689b 689 spirit cargo roof box instruction manual
Dear Customer,
We are delighted that you have decided to
purchase one of our roofboxes. We hope your
use of the roofbox brings you a lot of pleasure.
What is important in this connection, however, is
that you carefully study and observe these usage
instructions prior to mounting the roofbox!
Have fun with your new roofbox!
Prior to mounting of roofbox
This roofbox fits on all standard roof racks with the
following tubular strut dimensions:
Width max. 80 mm / Height 18 – 35 mm.
First mount the roof rack on your vehicle giving
due consideration to the vehicle manufacturer’s
instructions and the mounting instructions for the
given roof rack. The distance – centre to centre
– between the two rack transverse struts can measure
between 575 mm and 975 mm. You should always
select the largest distance possible between them.
For mounting the roofbox on racks with slotted
sections (T-slot rail sections), we offer special
adapter kits, which can be purchased from specialist
stockists or directly from the manufacturer.
1 - 3: Alignment of roofbox
Your roofbox is equipped with an adjustable quickfit Thule Power-Grip® mounting system, enabling
the roofbox to be mounted quickly and easily
without any tools. Four adjustable Thule PowerGrip® fixing units are pre-installed in the bottom of
the roofbox.
After you have unpacked the roofbox and opened
the lid, turn the Thule Power-Grip® fixing elements
in an anticlockwise direction until completely open
(Fig. 1).
Position the roofbox centrally on the roof rack
(Fig. 2 + 3). In the case of vehicles with a tailgate,
position the roofbox and/or roof rack on the vehicle
such that the roofbox does not prevent the tailgate
from being opened freely.
Locate the Thule Power-Grip® fixing units in a
central position vis-à-vis the rack sections. (It is
helpful if they are positioned manually prior to
fixing them to the given rack section).
4: Fixing roofbox in place
Check that all four Thule Power-Grip® fixing
elements are correctly positioned and centred (in
the case of asymmetrical and broad rack sections,
corrections may be necessary) and turn them all
firmly in a clockwise direction (4 Nm). This force
can be achieved manually without tools. Once the
fixing elements have been turned shut, both claws
of the Thule Power-Grip® fixing system should fit
tightly around the rack.
4
Now check that your roofbox is fixed firmly and
securely. Contact your specialist stockist in case of
doubt.
If the roofbox has been fixed in place either
inadequately or only partially, it is not securely
connected to the roof rack and may not be used.
There is a risk that the roofbox may slide off the roof
en route and cause a serious accident!
You can open your roofbox from either side; to do
so, however, the side you don’t want to open must
first be locked with the appropriate key! When
opening the roofbox, check therefore that the locking
system on the opposite side is engaged.
For reasons of safety, the roofbox must be mounted
such that it can be loaded and unloaded from the
passenger side of the vehicle! The person loading or
unloading the roofbox may not do so while standing
on the road!
5: Transportation of goods
The goods to be transported must be held firmly
with suitable securing straps (supplied as standard
and available as accessories if more or needed).
If skis are to be transported, they have to be properly
secured using ski holders and securing straps
(available as accessories).
Order numbers for ski holders:
Spirit 780 = Item no. 709
Spirit 820 = Item no. 708
6: Loading of roofbox
When loading the roofbox, ensure that the load is
well distributed (heaviest load in the middle) and
is not too high for the closed roofbox. Should this
be the case and the load presses against the lid, the
roofbox could be damaged and may not be securely
locked.
The maximum payload of the roofbox is 75 kg.
Under no circumstances should the maximum
roof load of your vehicle be exceeded (see vehicle
manufacturer’s operating instructions)!
7: Opening and closing of roofbox
To unlock the roofbox, press the lid down slightly
and, at the same time, turn the key in the direction
shown by the arrow. The key cannot be removed
from the lock as long as the roofbox is unlocked.
To lock the roofbox, press the lid down slightly and
turn the key in an anticlockwise direction. The key
can only be removed from the lock if the roofbox is
locked.
Check at regular intervals (depending on the state
of roads) both before and during each journey that
the roofbox is firmly fixed to the roof rack, the load
adequately secured , the roofbox locked and the key
removed from the lock.
Inadequately secured loads and incorrectly mounted
roof racks and roof boxes can come loose during a
journey and cause serious accidents!
Ensure you give due consideration to the change in
height and drive behaviour (side-wind sensitivity,
corner and braking behaviour) of the given vehicle
when a roof rack and/or roofbox is/are mounted and,
above all, loaded. No further loads may be attached
to the outside of the roof box.
The total permissible laden weight of the given
motor vehicle may not be exceeded. The instructions
of the motor vehicle manufacturer in respect of the
maximum roof weight must be observed.
Calculation of available roof load:
Weight of roof rack
+ weight of roofbox
+ weight of payload
= available roof load
Unladen weight of roofboxes:
Spirit 780 = 24 kg
Spirit 820 = 26 kg
The speed driven must be suited to the load to be
transported and, of course, to all relevant official
speed limits! In the absence of any speed limits
to the contrary, we recommend a max. speed of
130 km/h. When transporting any type of load,
the speed of the given vehicle must however take
into account all prevailing conditions such as the
state of the road, the surface of the road, traffic
conditions, wind, etc.!
The roofbox should be carefully cleaned and
maintained, particularly during the winter
months. For this purpose, only use a solution of
water and standard washing-up liquid without
any alcohol, bleach or ammonium additives as
otherwise the surface of the roofbox could suffer
damage. Please do not use any standard cockpit
sprays for cleaning the roofbox. The locks should
be lubricated with spray lubricant (no lubricant
should be allowed to come into contact with the
plastic surface of the roofbox).
Please note the following when using the roofbox:
- The height of the given vehicle can increase by up
to 60 cm (depending on the roof rack used)
- Beware of low garage entrances, low clearances in
general, low-hanging branches, etc!
- Wind noise may be generated.
- When using an automatic car-wash facility, the
roofbox and roof rack must first be removed.
- In addition to these usage instructions, due
consideration should also be given to mounting
instructions for the given roof rack and the
operating instructions of the given vehicle!
- For reasons of fuel economy and the safety of other
road users, the roofbox and roof rack should be
removed when not in use.
- For your own safety, you should only use tested
(e.g. GS-tested) roof racks that are authorised for
usage in conjunction with your vehicle.
- In order to avoid generating excessive lifting
forces, the roofbox should be mounted parallel to
the line of the road and not at an angle.
- In the absence of any instructions from the vehicle
manufacturer to the contrary and in compliance
with the vehicle specifics, the distance between
the rack’s transverse struts should be as large as
possible but still within the setting range of the
adjustable Thule Power-Grip® quick-fit
mounting system. Please note that
changes (e.g. additional drill holes) to the
roofbox’s fixing system are not permissible.
These usage instructions should be kept together
with the given vehicle’s operating instructions and
carried in the vehicle when in use and en route.
Any changes made to the mounting sets and roofbox
as well as the use of spare parts or accessories other
than those supplied by the manufacturer will lead
to the manufacturer’s warranty and liability for any
material damage or accidents lapsing! You should
therefore observe these usage instructions to the
letter and only use the original parts supplied. In the
event of you losing parts or parts wearing out, you
should only replace them with original spare parts
that can be obtained from a specialist stockist or the
manufacturer.
To assure the rapid provision of spare parts and
avoid any time-consuming queries, we would ask
you to indicate the so-called „BA No.“ whenever
you order spare parts or have a query. This „BA No.“
can be found on a sticker located inside the roofbox
top.
In order to ensure that you are able to replace any
lost or defective keys as quickly as possible, we
would advise you to note down the lock and key
numbers.
The manufacturer is not liable for any damage
or accident that may occur as a result of noncompliance with these usage instructions, changes
made to parts or usage of any parts other than
the manufacturer’s original parts!
